I had this incredible sitdown interview
0:01
with Fran Brown, Syracuse football head
0:04
coach, and I I posted it on YouTube this
0:07
week and I thought this is such a unique
0:14
because Fran Brown is built from a
0:18
different mold than almost any other
0:20
coach I've ever spoken to is. And I
0:23
think it's indicative of a grander,
0:26
broader sea change of college coaches. I
0:29
sat down with Fran Brand and I did about
0:30
25 minutes with Fran. We talked a little
0:33
bit about football, a little bit about
0:34
the team, but really about life and
0:37
really about messaging and really about
0:40
philosophy. It really was about that.
0:42
So, even if you're not a Syracuse fan, I
0:44
encourage you to watch this conversation
0:46
because it's about really more than
0:49
football and more about how you build a
0:53
team, how you build loyalty, how you
0:56
build trust in today's sports landscape
0:59
and I think in a grander sense as well
1:01
within a family, within a group or
1:04
organization. I spoke to Fran Brown
1:07
about his uncle Charlie and about what
1:09
uncle Charlie taught him. And he said,
1:11
'Uncle Charlie taught me. He was a cop
1:13
in Philadelphia. Fran Brown grew up in
1:16
Camden, New Jersey, which is a rough
1:18
part of Philadelphia. And he said,
1:20
"Uncle Charlie taught me that no matter
1:23
who you were, no matter what background
1:25
you had, you could be cool with that
1:27
person without being in that lifestyle."
1:30
So there could be a guy that dealt
1:31
drugs. There could be a guy that was a
1:33
felon. There could be a guy that was
1:35
messed up in a lot of different areas.
1:37
Uncle Charlie was there not to judge
1:39
that person, but also he stood for
1:43
respect and order because he was part of
1:45
the comm of the of the policing. And he
1:47
said, I I could walk through different
1:49
worlds because I learned that from him,
1:52
which I thought was a really powerful
1:53
thing. I said, why did you make changes
1:55
so dramatically to your coaching staff
1:57
after just two seasons? Year one was
2:00
great, 10 wins. Year two was terrible,
2:01
three wins. He said, "I owed it to my
2:05
players because I asked them for loyalty
2:09
and they knew the problems and if I
2:11
didn't address that, then they would see
2:15
me as a fraud." Now, that's a pretty
2:17
powerful message as well because he had
2:19
to fire some guys that had been
2:20
supremely loyal to him over the course
2:22
of his coaching career. He also
2:25
mentioned that some coaches were out for
2:28
their own agendas which were trying to
2:32
get other jobs, try to rise up the food
2:34
chain. And he said, "Now I understand
2:37
the slogan, you can go interview for
2:39
that job, but you better get it." He
2:41
said, "Because once they came back and
2:42
they didn't get those jobs, I could tell
2:44
they were no longer interested in this
2:46
job." And that started to seep into
2:48
everybody within the the program, which
2:50
was a really kind of incredible insight
2:53
into a problematic season in which
2:55
Syracuse started 3-1 and then lost their
2:57
last eight games. Syracuse fans, make
3:00
sure you're subscribed to the channel.
3:01
That way, you won't miss any of my
3:03
postgame recaps all throughout the
3:05
football season. Make sure you are
3:07
subscribed to the channel. Don't miss a
3:08
thing. He talked about all these things
3:10
about making guys believe. And I said,
3:13
you know, this is a this is a world of
3:15
NIL where it's all transactional. I
3:17
said, but you're so of loyalty. That's
3:20
your DNA. So, how do you juggle that?
3:23
And he said, well, we won't always win
3:27
the money race. He goes, but but what
3:29
I'll tell kids, what I'll tell guys is
3:32
we might be $100,000 short, but what I'm
3:35
going to give you, I think is worth
3:36
$100,000. He said, I'm going to give you
3:38
hard coaching. I'm going to give you
3:40
truth. I'm going to give you
3:42
authenticity. You will know where I
3:43
stand. I will be here to make you better
3:46
at everything, not only football, but in
3:48
life in general, to make you a leader
3:49
once you leave this. I want you to be
3:52
successful, not just in football, in
3:54
life. I will do all of that for you, and
3:56
you will know exactly where I stand. I
3:58
will be truthful and honest and
4:00
accountable through everything. He said,
4:02
"And I hope that that's worth $100,000."
4:04
I thought that's a pretty good counter
4:05
as well to not being able to always win
4:07
the NIL race. There's a lot of things
4:10
that Fran Brown talked about that I just
4:12
found really refreshing. I already had a
4:15
great great respect for him, but now
4:17
even more so. So, if you're a sports
4:20
fan, a football fan, and you see that on
4:22
the the YouTube channel, I encourage you
4:24
to check it out. Spend 20 minutes at
4:26
some point this week and watch it. I
4:27
think you'll get a lot out of it. And
4:29
like I said, it's really less about
4:31
Syracuse football and more about these
4:33
kind of grander ideas about college
4:34
football these days and leadership and
4:38
team building and winning and loyalty
4:42
and all these things that factor into a
4:45
lot of different parts about life. He
4:47
said one thing that I thought was really
4:49
powerful. He said, "This is really not
4:51
my program." He's like, "This is for the
4:52
alum. This is for the guys that came
4:54
before me." because I asked him about
4:55
all these former football players at
4:57
Syracuse that are now once again
4:59
entrenched. He's invited back guys like
5:02
Dwight Freeny, Kevin Johnson, Keith
5:05
Bullock, all these guys have been
5:08
invited to come back. Donovan McNab and
5:10
they and when they come back, they sit
5:12
in positional meetings. They sit and
5:15
they work with the guys. He's like,
5:16
"You're not here just to watch. We want
5:18
your knowledge and your wisdom." He
5:19
said, "This existed before I got here.
5:21
This will exist after I got here." He
5:23
said, "I'm not worried about what people
5:24
on the outside think. I'm worried about
5:26
what people on the inside think. That
5:28
will get us where we need to go." And he
5:29
told this amazing story about driving
5:31
home a elderly Syracuse fan named Mr.
5:36
Joseph and picking his brain about all
5:39
the football that he's seen going back
5:40
to Jim Brown. I said, "You know, Vegas
5:42
thinks you're going to lose a lot of
5:44
games this year." He goes, "I'm not
5:46
worried about that. I'm worried about
5:47
what Mr. Joseph thinks." I was like,
5:49
"Man, that's a good story." He took him
5:52
out to dinner, drove him home.
5:54
Unbelievable. So, yeah, I think it was a
5:56
great conversation and I think that
5:58
those types of dynamics and opinions are
6:01
the types of opinions that are now what
6:05
is needed for a younger generation of
6:07
coaches that has to navigate a really
6:09
diabolical landscape. It's not the way
6:12
that it used to be done. And so, how do
6:14
you cut through the craziness and chaos
6:17
that is college football right now in
6:19
college sports? I think a lot of what
6:21
Fran Brown said and is is what will
6:25
really resonate for this next generation
