0:08
we're back on another episode this Monday and we're going to talk about another Groundhog Day for Nebraska
0:13
basketball with another ugly loss on the road um but there is a chance that the Huskers um in football will be adding
0:19
some offensive line help which I know a lot of you guys have been hoping for so we're going to discuss the latest on that plus some other news and notes
0:25
around the Big 10 and Nebraska before we get into that please hit the like button hit the Subscribe button get into the
0:31
comment section Danny how are you doing on this uh Monday morning doing good doing good uh we're heading into
0:37
February it's hard to believe and still a lot of news on the Nebraska front so I'm ready to get into it yeah and like
0:44
we've got uh the Super Bowl matchup Now set with the Chiefs and uh the Eagles winning last night uh cam Jurgens was
0:51
hurt wasn't supposed to play and then did have to play for the Eagles yesterday so that was kind of interesting so he'll be uh going back or
0:58
he'll be going to the Super Bowl I guess I don't think was on their last Super Bowl team and then um Nebraska future
1:03
dline coach Terry bradden was uh you know part of the Chiefs uh win last night he celebrated with Dawson Meritt
1:09
and Dylan Rola were actually at the Chiefs game in the locker room so that was kind of cool to see um so yeah I
1:15
mean I know a lot of people aren't uh wanting to see the Chiefs win it again but it's kind of hard to see them getting stopped but we'll see maybe
1:21
Philadelphia will pull it out this time yeah they they definitely the Chiefs definitely benefited from a
1:28
couple lucky calls on Sunday and now I'm starting to understand why people hated the Patriots and Tom Brady so much so
1:34
you know it is what it is uh I'm hoping they don't get that three repeat but I could see it happening with that being
1:40
said the Eagles were an absolute buzs saww through the Washington defense yesterday so I think it's going to be a
1:46
good game I was I was rooting for the bills and commanders just to kind of switch things up a little bit but we're
1:51
in the midst of a potential I'm not going to say potential we are in the midst of a football Dynasty so you know
1:58
you know how these things go new Eng fans saw it let's see three separate times over the course of Tom Brady's
2:05
career and now we're in the middle of one with the Chiefs yeah it's been a an impressive
2:10
run I mean seven straight um championship game appearances for Patrick Mahomes which I think is pretty incredible although Tom Brady had a
2:16
pretty great record in that regard as well um but yeah there is a lot of frustration with the officiating and um
2:23
I think the one play is the Josh Allen sneak play where you know looked maybe like he got the first down um here's my
2:30
thing I've been saying this for years I don't know why we have not put a chip in the football it's like why in the year
2:35
of Our Lord 2025 are we having two old dudes from 20 yards away running in and
2:41
guessing where the ball is it dri it absolutely drives me crazy it's driven me crazy for years put a chip in the
2:46
football I don't know if Josh Allen made the first down or not but if we had the we do have the technology it seems
2:51
pretty simple that we could say hey here's where the you know the tracker was on the ball it reached the 40 yard line first down like I just there has to
2:58
be a way to do it more you know scientifically than you know two guys that can't see the ball just running in
3:04
from 25 yards away guessing I mean why are we guessing you know in a league that makes literally like more money
3:10
than God it drives me crazy reminded me a little bit of the Ohio State game uh
3:16
with some of the missed first down calls but um yeah no it's really it's really interesting and as a Patriots fan I I
3:24
hate to say it but I do like Josh Allen I I I like him a lot I thought he should uh I I you know I think um you know he's
3:31
a very solid quarterback very very mobile quarterback can make tough throws
3:37
uh he's done a lot this year with I'm not going to say bad receivers but no Elite receivers and um you know I I was
3:45
really hoping to see him um make his first Super Bowl and then Jaden Daniels was an absolutely
3:51
fantastic story this year for the commanders uh you know they've been looking for their franchise quarterback
3:57
ever since the departure of Robert Griffin thei third and Daniels is that guy and um I was just talking about this
4:04
with some friends the other day I think when you look at this NFL rookie class you have Jaden Daniels Caleb Williams
4:10
Drake May Bo Knicks you're looking at a group that's going to be very very special for years to come and I know
4:16
some people were a little bit hesitant about the talent in this quarterback class but they've all proven that
4:21
they're here and they're here to stay yeah for sure it's uh it'll be interesting to see you know how things
4:28
play out but yeah the we'll see if the Chiefs can get that number three uh that third consecutive Super Bowl but you
4:34
know maybe the blocking of Cam Jurgens for sequan Barkley will save them anyway
4:39
um speaking of blocking I know one thing that Nebraska football fans have been hoping for is better blocking up front so this will be a good transition to um
4:47
some interesting news out of the transfer portal I would say now Notre Dame was in the national championship
4:53
game last week and they've had a slew of offensive linemen um leave uh via the transfer portal uh Sam Pendle who went
5:00
to Tennessee uh Tai Chan who's a former offensive tackle fourstar who's still out there Pat kouan who started at
5:06
Center for them last year started 13 games well the last 13 games entered the portal and also Roco Spindler um started
5:12
the last 13 games 23 games over his career was a top 100 recruit um he's 65
5:18
325 pounds from Clarkston Michigan um but Nebraska is very much in the mix here Michigan is to um Indiana has also
5:25
been mentioned Pittsburgh and Virginia as well um it should be noted Pittsburgh
5:30
just picked up a commitment from Jeff Percy who's the former Michigan tackle and Nebraska actually had been mentioned
5:37
there so um that he's off the board um but yeah what what do you think about
5:42
Rocco Spindler and uh what Nebraska's chances are with him I I really like him
5:48
as a player you know he started week three against Purdue and he was able to kind of start the rest of the way uh he
5:54
would bring you know playoff experience you know veteran experience to align
5:59
that is continuing to build and needs that experience um you know and Landing
6:05
him would be huge because they've tried to land um lineman over the past couple weeks and they've just fallen short
6:12
obviously Elijah pitri is the lone exception but they've really made a considered effort to try to land a lineman and they haven't been able to uh
6:19
uh you know shisa Pete was a guy that they missed out on um and so Landing a
6:25
guy like Roco Spindler would be great I mean between his experience um his his
6:31
pedigree and the fact that they need they need another tackle I mean he would
6:37
be a good addition Michigan is definitely going to be tough to battle with even Indiana I think is going to be
6:44
tough to battle with and I I I think they're very much in the mix as well so I'm I'm hoping for good things and you
6:51
know like we've mentioned before like you've mentioned before offensive lineman in the portal are extremely hard
6:57
to grab so I'm hoping this goes in our favor but I know there's definitely going to be competition yeah so um with going back
7:04
to his high school recruitment of Rocco Spindler Michigan um was right in it obviously he was one of the best players
7:10
in the state of Michigan in the 2021 class um he actually had a bunch of crystal balls for Michigan like they
7:15
were considered the leader for a long time and it was kind of one of those things where they kept he kept delaying the decision and delaying it and then um
7:22
went to Notre Dame um so and there was there was a little bit of hard feelings I would say in the way that the
7:28
recruitment was kind of handled but um that offensive line coach who recruited him is no longer on the Michigan staff
7:34
anymore it wasn't shiron Moore so there so that basically no longer exists and
7:39
um I think that a lot of this is going to come down to nil and I think part of the reason he entered the portal was and
7:45
I I mean it should be said that like he probably isn't might not have been guaranteed a job there last year or next
7:52
season because um he didn't win the job out of fall Camp so basically uh you
7:57
know there were some injuries but he stepped in and played really well for the last 13 games so I think it's a chance for him to you know go somewhere
8:04
and guarantee himself a starting job and then also cash in on nil so personally I
8:10
think that this is coming down to Michigan or Nebraska I know Indiana's in the mix but I just feel like with the
8:16
way that you know Nebraska and Michigan have both been targeting offensive linemen and the way that they you know
8:21
are going to try to spend with nil money I just have a hard time seeing Indiana um you know match those numbers to be
8:28
honest with you so I really do think this is going to be a Nebraska Michigan Battle now on Sunday um Pete n was
8:34
reported that there was there was no visits by Spindler he it was thought that he maybe was going to visit
8:39
Michigan and that didn't happen so we'll see if it happens again this week I would like to see him visit Nebraska um
8:45
what's interesting is I'm not sure if he's gonna be able to go through spring practice I I'm pretty sure he's not
8:50
going to be able to at Michigan and I'm not sure if that is an academic thing where he has to finish up some classes
8:56
um and that could be a similar case with Nebraska too so that's another aspect of
9:01
it that could just be a Michigan thing though because they do have different academic requirements um Michigan just
9:08
they basically it's not even that guys can't get in it's just that they will only take a certain amount of like
9:15
transfer credits so you know not very many schools are kind of reciprocal with
9:20
Michigan like the same problem they have with that basketball player right a couple years back yeah they've had yeah
9:26
they've had a problem with a few of basketball players like that and actually it's hurt them with um you know a couple
9:32
transfers too that they were in the mix for uh one of the I think it was a wide receiver but he anyways he wouldn't have
9:37
been would not have been able to enroll this spring so he went to another school um so that is a factor I'm not sure if
9:44
that would be the case at Nebraska of course Spring the spring classes I think have already started or starting this week so but I mean start school's
9:53
secondary to football at this point I mean we all know that but I I do think that if they were able to get Roco Spindler here's where I think it would
9:59
be you know he obviously wouldn't be um you know starting tackle I think he would be their starting guard but what
10:05
it could do potentially is that could allow Grant bricks to focus more on tackle you know I've seen him on the
10:11
depth chart at guard and you know if you got Spindler you could have Evan Jenkins play center you've got latoski at your
10:17
other guard and I feel like that could maybe free him up to be you know like a swing tackle I mean I know that Nebraska
10:23
fans want another tackle but it's to me it's starting to feel like you know gunar Gula and pritchet are going to be
10:29
the two guys and so I'm kind of thinking more about depth you know because like I've said before it's hard to make it through one season with two
10:35
tackles yeah and you know I think coutula is ready for a bigger role this
10:40
season I think um I think he played really well last year I think he showed that he could you know obviously was it
10:47
perfect last year no but does he is he talented and can he make you know positive contributions absolutely so I
10:53
think just to bounce off that catula point he he's going to continue to
10:58
develop and grow this year and um you know I think he's going to have a big a big say in you know the play of the line
11:05
this coming season all right you guys now we're gonna have to bite the bullet and talk some Nebraska basketball and it was
11:12
another uh disappointing day Nebraska was at Wisconsin and you know what's disappointing about it is you go into
11:19
this game and Nebraska you know according to the ESPN Bracketology still on the bubble one of the last four teams
11:24
out and so it's like you know The Season's on the line they still have an opportunity to turn things around and
11:29
they allow Wisconsin to score 17 of the first 19 points in the game so I mean the game was effectively over in the
11:35
first five minutes they did battle back I mean they got within you know six five six points there in the first half I
11:41
mean it's not like they totally you know rolled over but I mean they gave up 17 three-pointers now this is the this is
11:49
the third they've had lost six in a row this is the third time in that six game losing streak that they've given up 15
11:54
three-pointers or more and three of those you know Iowa Purdue and now this game and that I mean I know those teams
12:01
shoot the ball well but to me that's just unacceptable 15 three-pointers to happen three times I mean I know Fred
12:08
hyberg keeps sitting there saying it's not a problem with the scheme but I don't believe him I I mean you look at it last year they had the same issues um
12:15
I do think that part of it is you know defensive effort and maybe just a lack of athleticism but um but yeah this
12:22
defensive scheme is not working so I I I feel like the you know the idea that
12:27
they haven't made any adjustments and they've you know they've tried some different players they took out Braxton may they started Andrew Morgan and Sam
12:33
hyberg but I don't know if I don't know what they need to do but they need to make some adjustments and very quickly
12:38
because this has turned into a dumpster fire I I don't know what they need to do either it's you know it's really
12:46
interesting the drop off and play once they got the conference Place St me if you've heard that in a Fred hyberg uh
12:52
season before um that they really struggled and maybe the non-conference games really were Fool's Gold I mean May
12:59
maybe this was maybe they they're not as good as we thought they were I mean
13:05
clearly they're not playing well right now and it's not like you said it's not like a onepoint loss year fivepoint loss
13:11
or you know battling hard out of the gates and then just running out of gas it's complete
13:16
blowups and you know and I and I'll toss this to you because I've been wondering this I
13:22
was wondering as I was watching them get absolutely you know destroyed from
13:28
behind the dark what changed from last year to this year I mean on paper on
13:34
paper and I'll stress that again they have a better team this year than they did last year what
13:39
changed you know I don't I think one thing you know we talk about them being
13:45
better on paper but I do think that we underrated the impact of Kay tominaga and just having you know that
13:50
electrifying player and what he brought to this offense and um just the spark I think that he you know gave this team
13:57
but um I you know and I think on a a separate part of that is he handled a
14:03
lot of the scoring and so I think you know Jawan Gary went from being kind of a guy that you know he could score but
14:09
he was kind of like a you know a what's the word I'm looking for just kind of a jack of all trades like you know do the
14:15
dirty stuff type of guy you know like utility guy yeah utility guy and now now
14:20
Jan Gary's having to be you know a high usage scorer and that's just not who he is you know I'm sorry but that's just
14:26
like if Jan Gary has to be your number two scorer like that's just not a great team I mean that's not an ideal
14:31
situation because that's just not who he is he's not a guy that you're like okay man we're going to isolate you go get a
14:37
bucket like you know he can hit some threes he can score some sh I mean he can do some things driving to the basket
14:42
attacking Closeouts but I mean really so they have one guy Bryce Williams who can basically create his own shot and you
14:49
know we're seeing the the results of that I mean it's just a lot of pressure on him Bryson um J I think they went
14:55
like six or 24 um yesterday I mean you're just not going to win when you're best players shoot like that but but
15:00
what else are you going to do I mean the only other guys who have scored consistently are Andrew Morgan in the
15:05
post and Conor aan from the three-point line you know Gavin Griffith has just been a total bust he hasn't contributed
15:12
at all this year uh Braxton may you know was didn't play a minute on Sunday so that to me that's pretty disturbing when
15:18
you have a guy who's been starting for you and then you know doesn't play at all and probably some of that had to do with the fact that you know Wisconsin's
15:25
bigs constantly shoot threes so that probably was a tough matchup for him having to you know get out to the three-point line and Etc but seems like
15:32
a lot of matchups are a tough match up for him though I mean let's be let's be honest seems like he's struggled a lot
15:38
and yeah I don't know what you know even from last season but like from the UCLA
15:44
game to you know these next you know I mean there's it's just like Maryland's a good a good offensive team a fairly good
15:50
offensive team and they did a good job against them of course Maryland doesn't shoot well from three but you know it's
15:56
just I really have a hard time believing that there's not scheme issues I mean guys just are overh helping and um you
16:04
know they're they're just kind of like collapsing in the paint and then they're leaving guys wide open and we it started with the Iowa game and really truly it's
16:11
been a problem all year because Nebraska has given up a ton of three-pointers and it's like you know it's fine if those
16:17
are contested looks but you know you can't be giving up 20 20 assists and uh
16:22
15 three-pointers a game man like that's that's got extremely lucky looking back on it now I mean were
16:30
yeah yeah well no I'm just saying you're 100% right that there there were a ton of open looks and they just missed them
16:35
you know and so it was like you can't you can't rely on good teams to miss threes like that it's just not going to happen no and you know now teams have
16:45
the book on Nebraska on how to you know kind of you know kind of penetrate their
16:52
defense either go inside or make quick passes from behind the ark so that the
16:57
rotation can't get back fast enough and shoot the three I mean there hasn't been very many defensive adjustments either
17:04
and that's the thing once teams start figuring out what you can't do then they'll just attack it I would love to
17:09
see more defensive adjustments but I really don't see a scheme change this late in the year yeah this has been a
17:15
problem throughout Fred Hy's tenure I think the rotations have been nice but they only work when you have the ability
17:21
to get back quick enough and have that athleticism and they don't and um man it's just not the
17:28
schedule does get a little easier down the stretch um after these next you know you got um home against Illinois at
17:34
Oregon then at Washington home against Ohio State home against Maryland at Northwestern and uh at Penn State so I
17:42
mean there's some some winnable games but like right now it's going to be a grind just to make the big 10 tournament
17:47
um the way that this team is is playing right now and that they're you know they're playing okay at home but um you
17:54
know just seems like for whatever reason they cannot translate anything on the the road and that you know that's pretty
18:00
worrisome so it's uh let's see how many more Road games do they have to play
18:06
this season so four more five more Road games
18:12
um you know I mean so I don't know it's going to be very difficult I I mean we
18:18
we talked about a little bit last week and I know people weren't that thrilled with the topic but I mean with Fred hyberg I'm not I don't think you should
18:25
get fired but if you're losing every road game by 30 points it's going to be hard to keep you so this team at some
18:30
point like has to start showing some fight and they have it at times and you
18:36
know Fred said that effort wasn't the issue against USC but I mean I don't know what he said yesterday but that
18:41
really it felt like I don't want to say they quit but it just it felt like they
18:47
you know didn't I I guess didn't give it the their full effort at times felt like they you know once once it got back I
18:53
feel like they just went through the motions and so you know I'm not going to say that this team is quit on Fred hyberg but I do think that they're kind
18:59
of quitting in games and that just can't happen this the the the Purdue game was really eye openening too it was just
19:05
kind of uh it would just kind of uh look into the fact that you know against a
19:11
good three-point shooting team they really really struggle I mean the Purdue game was like whoa like this isn't good at all so we'll see what happens I don't
19:19
you know I don't think Fred should be fired partly because that's another contract on the books and and and
19:25
Nebraska does great with contracts on the books so so um if there's one thing they do wi at
19:31
it's contract buyouts but um I don't know you know look I love Sam
19:37
hyberg and I know we and I know they needed to spark yesterday but I would not put him in the starting lineup but
19:43
but at the same time I understand why why Fred did it because he's just trying to get something going but still that
19:48
tells you the state of the program right now right there yeah and the fact yeah Bryce Williams basically is the
19:54
essentially playing point guard because you know your your other guards just aren't cutting it so I mean it's it's
20:00
not a great situation and I don't unfortunately I don't think it's going to get better like I just don't think
20:06
it's going to get a lot better they just they need to fight and grind hopefully they can make the big 10 tournament
20:11
because I think that that would at least you know silence a lot of the hot seat talk I mean the past two or three years
20:17
have still been some of the best basketball Nebraska's played in the Big 10 so I think it would be a mistake to
20:23
let go of Fred hyberg um let him recalibrate he's shown that he can do it before he's shown that he can figure out
20:30
what's wrong and fix it so I still believe in him as a coach but this the
20:35
way that he tried to build this team and and this is the um the inherently risky
20:40
thing of building a team out of the transfer portal every year is that if those pieces don't mesh like it can go
20:46
really well and it can go really poorly and this year it went really poorly I don't think being the Big 10
20:51
tournament silence is a hot seat talk I mean that should be the bare minimum with this roster that should be the bare minimum and I got and I and I definitely
20:58
got saying I definitely hear what you're saying but with this team with the amount of with the amount of experience
21:03
that they have making the big 10 tournament should be the bare minimum and I'm not saying that Nebraska should
21:09
make should even make the NCA tournament every year or that they need to go to the Sweet 16 or final four because I
21:15
realize the ceiling for Nebraska basketball may not be as high as some of the other programs but making the big 10
21:21
tournament your own Conference tournament should be the bare minimum because you know we've done that before
21:27
and granted it hasn't turned out so well but you know that that should be the bare minimum I'm sorry like we we you
21:34
know I feel like Nebraska has enough resources to be able to compete for at least NCA tournament spots and you know
21:40
making the big 10 tournament in year what year five of Fred Hoy BRS tenure now is is you know it should be expected
21:49
at this point yeah and it no I mean you're you're 100% right if they don't make this big 10 tournament I mean I think
21:55
that that the season would definitely be a failure at that point I mean I I think it's one and done I feel like would be a
22:03
failure and so looking at right now Washington is 1 and8 um Nebraska's 2 and seven so Nebraska's in 17th place and
22:10
then you've got ruter Minnesota Northwestern Ohio State all tied at three and six um Ohio state three and
22:17
five Iowa's four and five um so you know really kind of jumbled in there um
22:23
basically you've got four teams in the league that have um four loss that have less than four losses so everybody else
22:30
in the conference has at least four losses um so Michigan State's unbeaten Purdue has two Michigan has two
22:36
Wisconsin has three and um with Purdue like you know Michigan got destroyed at Purdue on Friday so like it can happen
22:42
like it is not crazy to go to macki Arena and get and you know get your bell rung get the doors blown off like it
22:48
happens not yeah but to happen twice to have it happen for that to happen like less than like a couple weeks later at
22:55
Wisconsin like that's just to me that's the issue like I can take a blowout loss but you know when you have a couple like
23:01
that and and I'm thinking what h i mean the way that they just got you know if you include the second half of Iowa when
23:07
they lost that by like I was gonna say the Iowa game kind of started all like I feel like kind of started all of
23:13
this the second half of the the second half of the Iowa game I mean they were up 15 or whatever and they just have not
23:20
you know they have not bounced back from that so hopefully they can get a win I mean if they could uh beat Illinois you
23:27
know it was the same thing I was saying yesterday if they could beat Wisconsin they could you know maybe turn this thing around but now it's just like they
23:34
just need a win I I don't even care about what it means for the postseason they just need to create some positive
23:40
momentum very soon um we should mention to the Nebraska women's team lost a
23:45
close game to Ohio State on Sunday that would have been a big win for them um but they're still 15 and five and uh
23:51
still projected to make the NCA tournament they're an eight seed so they should be good to go um but anyway let's
23:57
switch to uh special teams coach nothing really going on there but we just wanted to mention we have uh no candidates
24:04
whatsoever so I'm not sure if there's somebody on one of these coaching staffs maybe it'll maybe they'll create some
24:09
movement this week um but yeah it's uh it's it's been interesting that they
24:14
haven't hired a special teams coach yet given all the Kansas City connections I'm wondering if it's a Kansas City special teams
24:20
coach yeah if they've got like somebody that's uh you know like an assistant or
24:26
you know like an analyst or something maybe I should start looking up their coaching staff but maybe the Eagles too
24:32
you know I don't know I I was trying to think of I mean Matt rules probably got so many you know connections or but
24:39
maybe somebody yeah it could be um it's probably somebody that we maybe
24:45
haven't heard of but you know that probably has a you know history in the NFL um because that's Dave T probably
24:54
not pronouncing his name right who's the current special teams coordinator he's the assistant head coach so I mean I
25:01
don't think he's probably leaving maybe maybe he'll get maybe he's like I'm sick of winning Super
25:08
Bowls maybe come Nebraska where winning is plentiful well he want he just wants
25:15
a new challenge you know he like oh I've decided that I want to try to win a but here's maybe somebody um Andy Hill is
25:22
the assistant special teams coach um is in his Fifth Season as assistant special teams coach with the chief
25:29
um prior to that it doesn't say where but it says he had a a collegiate career spanning 30 years um so maybe maybe this
25:37
is a guy to look at um I thought we would have one by now as special teams coach so there you go
25:44
but let's see here I'm I'm going to look him up here a little bit more so he used to coach at uh he's in the Missouri um
25:52
Sports Hall of Fame so maybe dear mosy knows him let's see Andy May probably he
26:00
probably does know him he's from Trent he's from Trenton Missouri he was the um
26:07
associate head coach and special teams coordinator for Missouri um he's coached
26:12
wide receivers he's actually coached quarterbacks for Missouri wide receivers
26:17
um offensive coordinator he was the head coach at Hudson um Community Hutchinson Community College which is a very good
26:24
Community College program so yeah maybe um maybe Andy
26:29
Hill's the guy maybe maybe he's somebody we should start talking about because I don't know who else it could be I mean
26:35
it couldn't it can't be a college coach at this point I mean it I know we just we were going to talk about this but I
26:40
know we just had Jim nolles leave Ohio State to Penn State you know so I mean it's not like there's not coaching changes but I don't feel like there's
26:47
that kind of move you know in in college football for Matt rule like I don't think he's swiping away another team's
26:54
special teams coach and if he like if he was going to do it I feel like it would have happened already so so you know I
26:59
feel like it is one of these NFL coaches and maybe you know when you look at that name Andy Hill that kind of makes a lot
27:05
of sense he works with Terry Braden right now they just got him you know and he was basically in kind of a similar
27:11
role like an assistant defensive line coach you know guy who's coached a lot in college and U so I don't know that
27:16
would make a lot of sense maybe probably knows that I mean he he I'm sure yeah I
27:24
feel like Jamar mosy is well traveled and well known in the Missouri area um plus Dawson Merritt you know you you've
27:30
already got multiple because you got you have you know Dawson Merritt's dad obviously Dawson Merritt senior coaching
27:36
for the Chiefs and then um you know the dline coach so like there's multiple Connections in that building to Nebraska
27:42
yeah and you know I I thought we would have a guy by now but maybe they're waiting maybe they're waiting just to
27:49
you know you know maybe uh after the Super Bowl maybe then that it's kind of
27:54
interesting because you know you mentioned that with uh um the dine coach has already been announced so like if he
27:59
was going to come why why wait but I don't know I have to look at the other the Eagles coaching the Eagles tree see
28:06
who they got but uh maybe maybe it's one of these you know somebody from the commanders or bills or something and maybe we'll we'll get something but I
28:13
haven't heard a peep from like any of the Insiders you know that I follow um
28:18
no you know NE so it it'll be uh but definitely I don't maybe John Butler knows somebody yeah that's true yeah I
28:25
didn't even think about that could be um you know we thought maybe uh you know hogerson would have um you know with
28:32
Mark Scott from Baylor that maybe there would be a tie there that would get it but obviously that's you know that's not
28:39
happening I mean just waiting for an NFL guy would kind of make sense because like as we as we talked about before
28:46
they're building an NFL type staff so I mean a lot of the coaches have had experience in NFL Braden Butler uh rule
28:54
obviously you know guys guys who have played either played in the NFL coached
29:00
in the NFL and so I bet you it's one of these NFL guys I mean the bills have uh an
29:08
assistant special teams coach Corey hary um who's done um he was a special teams
29:14
coordinator for Tennessee State and has coached um you know tight ends so he's been with the bills for the last three
29:19
seasons so there's you know somebody like that it's got to be somebody like that who they're trying to you know like
29:25
get an upgrade for and I think they've been smart about you know kind of going after some of those guys
29:32
um I'm trying to see if there's just anybody else you know like the guys who do like quality control and um you know
29:39
stuff like that um and then but yeah while we're while we're on the topic of assistant
29:44
coaches it is pretty interesting to see uh you know Jim NES leaving um Ohio
29:50
State for Penn State now Penn Penn State made him the highest paid defensive coordinator in college football history
29:56
he's making 3.1 won or he's going to make like 3.1 or 3.2 million they basically took his salary at Ohio State
30:03
and offered him a million dollar raise um so like Penn State's going all in but I still feel like their biggest problem
30:09
might be their head coach in big games but I don't know what do you think about that move you know it's an interesting move because you don't really see a ton
30:16
of lateral moves like this but Penn State's defense you know they they gave up only 16 and a half points per game
30:22
and only 290 a little over 294 almost 295 yards per contest so it's like they
30:28
were necessarily a bad defense either so I think nolles will make them stronger uh he's a damn good defensive
30:35
coordinator and um yeah you really don't see too many lateral moves like this but like you said I think the pro the
30:41
problem starts at the top and um I've never been a huge James Franklin fan but as far as the defensive side of
30:48
football is concerned I think nolles is going to be great for Penn State I know I know you're not a big uh Drew oler fan
30:55
so I did think it's interesting I don't know if you saw this Joe clab when he released his preseason top 10 he's got
31:01
Penn State number one I thought that's a little uh I mean that yeah I I would I
31:07
would say personally I would say Texas and then probably Ohio State just
31:13
because even though they're losing a ton of guys they're still Ohio State I just would not rank until Penn State can
31:19
actually beat Ohio State like or a Michigan or somebody like that I just won't believe that they'll ever do it
31:24
like you know and in a in a big game he has beaten Ohio State he has beaten
31:29
Michigan but never in like one of those super big games to get to like the big 10 title game like he just never does it
31:36
and so like is that Gonna Change next year because they got Jim I just don't think their defense is gonna be that much better so I mean yeah no I me how
31:44
much better can it get it was already damn good like you said yeah yeah I don't think it's a bad addition but um I
31:50
I don't you know again I think it's just not addressing the alant in the room um but
31:56
good for Nolls he's getting paid I think I think um $3 million I think it was I
32:01
saw a report it was like something something really nice so good for him um
32:07
again I think the problem stems from a quarterback and head coach but you know oh uh Penn State excuse me definitely
32:14
definitely got a big higher in nolles um so while we were talking about
32:19
that I've been doing some more checking here's another guy from the Eagles staff Joe panuzio um he's the assistant
32:27
special teams quarter there he's um coordinator there he's been um he's got 44 years of experience in the NFL in
32:34
college he spent the last eight years with the or four years with the Eagles but um he's been with Miami the
32:41
University of Miami before Miami Florida um he was the head coach for mie State
32:46
he's worked at Auburn in Mississippi so he would be a guy that uh feels like he
32:52
would be a home run higher you know he's been doing it for a very long time and then um they do have another guy who's a
32:58
younger Tyler Brown who's a special teams assistant he um has been a special
33:04
teams assistant for the past couple years that feels like he would be um but Tada up reading through his his bio from
33:11
2014 to 2015 uh Brown Tyler Brown worked under
33:17
Matt rule as a special teams consultant at Temple so after doing some research
33:22
there is a connection to um an assistant coach on one of these staffs and uh maybe maybe that's where the are going
33:28
to be going here um Tyler Brown you heard here first let's see so during the 22 season he um worked with the
33:36
specialty he was a quality control assistant um for special teams from 2021 and 2022 and the last two years he's
33:44
been an assistant so four years he's worked with the Eagles special teams um and then which pretty they've had a good
33:50
special teams unit so and then uh prior to um that he actually worked at
33:56
Michigan he was the he was a special teams graduate assistant for two years and a special teams analyst for um three
34:03
years so he actually spent five years um on Jim Harbaugh's staff and um so yeah
34:10
so he's been around he's been around the game so this this might be the guy this Tyler Brown might be the guy um you know
34:17
has a has a title rule been in the NFL for four years coached under Jim Harbaugh and you know what Michigan had
34:23
some pretty damn good special teams you know you look at Jay Harbaugh and Jim Harbaugh and that's you know their their
34:29
special teams play from when Harbaugh took over was some of the best in the Big 10 so if they could replicate that I
34:34
would be all for it I always forget about Jay Harbaugh it's like you know Cooper Manning out of the three Manning
34:41
brothers I always forget that there's one there's one other one other guy but no I mean you know the Philadelphia
34:48
special teams have been extremely strong and uh you mentioned his Matt R and Michigan ties so he has experience in
34:54
the Big 10 and um I'm I'm just excited to see consistent special themes play I
35:01
know I know it's you know I have to go through all the analysis of oh this guy that guy but I just want good special
35:07
teams play it's been a long time since we've had consistent special teams play and um so maybe maybe maybe uh we'll
35:15
know more after the Super Bowl but even then at that point it would be really late because spring practices are what
35:22
pretty much next month because we're almost in February now so and but this here's another thing
35:28
though that you know we talked about the Chiefs and Terry Braden and how he was kind of announced but you know the
35:34
Eagles it's a different organization so maybe they have a different you know kind of philosophy or mindset on that
35:39
but I don't know that seems like that would be a really great fit for Nebraska either one of those guys that we talked
35:44
about um it does feel like it's an NFL guy though because why else would it take so long you know just yeah just
35:51
doesn't make any sense so I feel like it helps for recruiting if you have an NFL staff so um speaking of NFL yeah yeah
36:00
young guy too speaking of NFL uh Nash hutmacher polar bear got a shout out
36:06
from NFL draft analyst Tony Pauline on Saturday uh Pauline said that Nash was
36:14
you know something to the effect of he was running over blockers and I actually saw him in a one-on-one drill it was it
36:20
was just you know a little drill nothing major but he looked like he had the Speed and explosiveness and um you know
36:27
as I talked about before I was I was responding to some comments on Facebook I think the Shrine Bowl did really
36:35
really you know good things for Trey Palmer's stock a couple years ago so there's definitely something to be said
36:41
about performing well in the shrine bowl and I think Nash you know there's so there's so much good um defensive line
36:48
play in the Big 10 and um Sometimes some of these guys can get overlooked so I think Nash will be able to boost his
36:55
stock uh with with a couple more good days and then a good game in the shrine
37:00
bow yeah Nash I think does have a chance to definitely going to get drafted and he um you know I think this year he
37:07
didn't even necessarily put his best foot forward um with you know he lost all that weight with wrestling and
37:12
everything so I think I like wrestling and losing weight kind of maybe hurt him a little bit we talked about his mobility and how that might have helped
37:18
him but I think losing weight honestly at the end of the day kind of hurt him unfortunately yeah and trust those NFL
37:25
guys probably want you to be more in that 330 range but I mean he's he's an elite run stuffer so he's going to find
37:31
he's going to find a home and I think he's going to be in the league for a long time um so it be fun to watch him
37:36
this week and then the Senior Bowl starts up and they've got we've got the Huskers have Ty Robinson Tommy Hill and
37:41
Thomas fedon there and I feel like Ty Robinson um is going to be a day two
37:47
pick but I think he has a chance to potentially you know he's getting some Buzz as as a late first rounder so this
37:52
is a really big week for him um you know a lot of those uh teams um you know like
37:57
like the Green Bay Packers even they love Senior Bowl type of players you know those senior producers and if he
38:03
can test well yeah and if if uh if he contest well I mean the dude six he's
38:08
got everything he could want he could be a three technique a five technique he showed some interior pass rush ability
38:13
which is extremely valuable so um you know we we talked a lot about Tommy Hill coming into this season and hopefully he
38:19
can boost his stock after getting hurt all year but but Ty Robinson has an outside chance to be you know the guy
38:25
who ends that uh streak of no first round picks I am very very curious to see how Thomas
38:30
Fon does because I think he made a mistake honestly if if I'm being honest
38:36
here by declaring for the NFL draft but um I'm very curious to see how he does
38:41
and I hope he does well I really do I I'm just wondering you know if he will
38:46
be able to get drafted at all because I understand it might have been a thing where hogerson might have said there's
38:54
no room for you or whatever but I don't know if going the draft was the best best thing for him but I hope he does
39:00
well I really do CU if he can do well you know the tight end and what it means to the passing game in today's NFL
39:08
they're very important so I'm hoping he has a strong showing yeah I think the combine is going to be really important for him to
39:14
you know just how he runs and and all that type you know if he can post a good time that's going to help him if he has
39:19
a bad time then I feel like he's going to be an undrafted free agent so I mean not to put it all on on how fast you run
39:26
but when when it's a guy like him who's had injury problems I feel like that's really going to have a big factor on it
39:32
yeah um and quite honestly he was a little bit slow last year so yeah I mean
39:37
we'll see we'll see I'm not trying to like talk badly on him I just think there's a lot of things wrecking against
39:43
him that didn't necessarily warrant maybe going to the NFL but I am curious
39:48
to see how Tommy Hill test because when when he's you know at healthy and at his
39:53
best and when you know the planer F just wasn't bothering him and boy that's a tough injury uh he was obviously one of
39:59
the best corners I think in college football so I'm curious to see if he can remain healthy enough and boost is stock
40:04
enough to where he can get drafted yeah this is probably it's probably the most important week for Tommy Hill right because he didn't get a
40:11
chance to put much on film you know after that Colorado game so I mean if he could go out there and look healthy and
40:16
cover guys and that's the thing is you get a chance to do a lot of you know seven on seven one on one if he can look
40:22
good in those drills I think he could be a day two pick too honestly because yeah you know really good cover corners and
40:28
guys who can play man like Tommy Hill can play man you can put him on an island and he can play Man coverage he's
40:34
61 and he runs you know he's healthy he runs like a 4 or3 so um he was a
40:39
converted wide receiver in high school remember that too so he does have that speed like you mentioned yeah y so um so
40:45
that'll be interesting to watch those guys um that seems like a good spot to wrap it up um so keep an eye out on um
40:51
some news for the special teams coach although I'm thinking we're not going to hear much until after the Super Bowl happens so um any rate uh keep an eye
40:58
also for the Rocko Spindler we'll try to keep some updates going for that and uh please make sure that you guys hit the
