hello Husker fans welcome back to the Husker big red YouTube channel I'm Chris Peterson and joining me as always this Danny Gillette we're back here for
0:07
another episode of the podcast and on this Monday morning we're going to get into the decision by Nebraska to cancel
0:13
games with Tennessee which has caused some mixed reactions across college football and across Husker Nation um we
0:19
also are going to preview a really big basketball game for the Huskers on Monday night against Michigan um look
0:25
back at what happened on the softball and baseball diamond this weekend and also talk about Tyson the amazing Tyson
0:31
Terry who completed his state championship this weekend so we'll get into that some recruiting stuff and more
0:36
um before we get into everything hit the like button hit the Subscribe button get into the comment section and Danny how
0:41
are you doing on this Monday morning not as amazing as Tyson Terry I'll tell you that uh I'm I'm I'm feeling the Mondays
0:47
today that's for sure but I'm happy to be back at it and what it's going to be another busy week for Nebraska sports a
0:52
lot of interesting stuff uh happening and it seems like you know we we worry
0:58
about an offseason L and what are we going to cover well Nebraska Athletics always has us covered so there you
1:04
go yeah and I guess uh looking back you know this happened after our last um
1:10
episode but the uh Tennessee news happening here with uh Troy Dannon and
1:16
Nebraska cancelling um a basically a home and home series with Tennessee in 2026 and 27 that came out on Friday and
1:24
uh Pete themel was one of the first ones to report it and it was interesting right off the bat because Pete will put
1:30
that out there and then Danny White um the neb the Tennessee ad because the way
1:35
that Pete put it was that Tennessee and Nebraska were cancelling the series and then ad from Tennessee Danny White very
1:41
quickly said that was basically all Nebraska that Tennessee wanted to play these games they were disappointed that
1:46
they weren't playing these games and that Nebraska you know decided to cancel them so closely uh up to the you know
1:52
when they were going to be played so um a lot of of course rival fans Tennessee fans I've seen a lot of Iowa fans taking
1:59
shots in the Nebraska I've seen some Nebraska fans who have been upset about this of course they replaced Tennessee
2:04
with Bowling Green in Northern Iowa uh Troy Danon basically saying you know we need this money for the stadium project
2:11
since the uh Stadium's not going to have you know 20% of the seating I guess is is another issue so um I don't know what
2:18
are your thoughts about this Danny and what are your reactions to some of the reactions out there so I'm I'm going to
2:24
ask you what would you like my thoughts on which part because there's multiple layers to this like guess first just
2:30
what are what was your initial reaction to Nebraska cancelling this on Tennessee like you know what just what's your you
2:37
know organic reaction to it I'm I'm disappointed from a football standpoint
2:42
because I would have loved to have seen Nebraska play Tennessee but on the other hand and I'm not sure I totally buy the
2:49
stadium Renovations explanation but when you look at the college football playoff and a lot of the teams that make it and
2:55
get into it their schedule's not front loaded I mean it's taken years for Alabama and you know Georgia to play a
3:02
tough schedule and now they're starting to finally do so but if you're looking at it from a winning perspective and
3:08
you're looking at it from wanting to get to the college football playoff you don't necessarily need tough games
3:14
anymore so I it so it's a double-edged sword I feel bad for the fans but for a
3:19
pure football you know competitive standpoint in terms of making the playoff then it's a good
3:26
move and you know I just found it pretty rich you know with the Tennessee fans
3:31
kind of saying that Nebraska was like you know scared of playing this game like that's not the case at all but it's like you guys are scared to play a nine
3:37
conference games so Nebraska's already playing nine conference games se you know the Tennessee basically this game
3:44
is like Tennessee's ninth conference game so yeah from that perspective it does make sense for Nebraska to say hey
3:49
like we don't need to play this game we're already playing an extremely difficult conference schedule and the fact of the matter is this was supposed
3:56
to be played 10 years ago this series was supposed to be played in 2016 and 2017 Tennessee wanted to move that
4:01
around Nebraska accommodated it things have changed now in 10 years big shock and so yeah like maybe the timing isn't
4:08
the best but that's what happens nowadays and so I don't know if it's all about the stadium project I'm really frankly I'm sick of hearing about the
4:14
stupid Stadium I just don't care about it I want to win I want this program to win games I could care less about the
4:19
stadium and I think this whole stadium thing is just I I think it's kind of stupid I honestly I thought it was stupid ever since you know Trev started
4:26
talking about it I don't think that Lincoln Memorial Stadium is the biggest problem with Nebraska football there's a lot of other issues so I don't know I
4:32
just I get so sick of talking about it no it's a good it's a good excuse for for bigger issues we'll just we'll just
4:39
blame it on the stadium project but no I mean I want to win football games and I'm sorry if you win 10 games and you
4:45
play you know Ohio or UMass or whatever then fine because the the best teams
4:51
don't frontload their schedule in difficult games and they still get it into the college football playoff and now that the Big 10 and the uh SC see
5:00
are are in talks about potentially adding more Auto bids then you know that
5:06
honestly adds even more less of an incentive that didn't really make sense but it adds less of an incentive to add
5:12
tough games and I'm sorry that's just the way it is and I get I really do get from the fans perspective that they
5:18
wanted to see you know a a Tennessee team come in and that the home slate is
5:24
a little less rich with games now so I do feel bad on that but just from a pure College football landscape standpoint
5:31
and what the you know big teams have done they don't have you know tough
5:38
games on their schedule they have cream puffs most of them anyway and they still
5:43
get into the college football playoffs so I think that's the right thing to do yeah I mean Ohio State played you know
5:49
very soft on conference schedule and it didn't matter at all Michigan did the same thing two years ago so you know you
5:55
don't have to play these games to get in um I don't necessarily buy the argu arent that Troy Dann put out you know in
6:01
one of his interviews that you know like not playing Tennessee was going to automatically help Nebraska like I get I
6:07
get what they're saying but also if you you know if you win that game like you you does it is going to help you from a
6:13
playoff perspective like I don't think there's any question about that I understand like you know you have probably more to lose than to gain from
6:18
it um yeah because you get the extra loss but you know at the end of the day it is what it is I think that that's
6:24
just you know a talking point for Troy Dannon you know at the end of the day he wanted to
6:30
you know get the extra Revenue back and and I understand that I don't really understand why some Nebraska fans are
6:36
like so worried or like they're like ashamed of the program for doing it like this is just the way that the business
6:42
works like this isn't this isn't this isn't new like teams are doing this all the time and you know part of it is when
6:49
they when Nebraska scheduled these games they didn't realize they were going to be in a 19 or an 18 team Big 10
6:55
conference with Oregon Washington UCLA you know what I mean USC the that was never an idea so the the like some years
7:03
your nine game Big 10 schedule is just like absolutely brutal and adding another difficult non-conference game to
7:09
it like there's just not a lot of incentive and we don't even know what the 26 and 27 schedules are going to look like from the Big 10 perspective
7:16
yet but they're going to be difficult and I guarantee it's going to be just as difficult as Tennessee is you know
7:22
playing whatever they're going to play in the SEC so I mean I I think like yeah it would have been fun to see Nebraska
7:27
you know go to neand stadium and you know vice versa but it's just I don't I don't really see any reason to have
7:34
heartburn over this I guess it just is what it is well I'll I'll I'll um I'll
7:41
offer my two sents here on a couple things one you know I think if you had told me 10 years ago that uh we would
7:47
have a million-dollar quarterback and um USC would be in the Big 10 I would have
7:53
told you you're a liar But Here we are now um secondly you know
7:59
I get why people wouldn't want to run from competition and I even saw you know the good old standby Osborne would have
8:06
run from competition but I mean that's that's the that's not running from
8:12
competition it's about winning games period end of story because you know we've seen teams that have played tough
8:19
schedules that either didn't get into the college football playoff or ended up losing crucial games and not making it
8:24
at all and when you look at it from a program perspective just Nebraska a perspective making the college football
8:31
playoff alone would do wonders for this program it would give them more National exposure at a time when you
8:38
know yes it's still a big brand but on the field it hasn't really been you know
8:44
it's a it's a nationally televised program but to recruits and kids that want to come here Nebraska making the
8:50
college football playoff would have been huge or will be huge excuse me and you know secondly you know I I I just think
8:57
that you know fans getting upset about it I mean this is what modern college football is now and if anything
9:04
Nebraska's been behind the times and now we're finally adjusting to them yeah and I just yeah I don't think
9:11
it's something that we're going to really be you know worried about um it's it's been pretty funny to notice the Iowa being like Iowa fans being like oh
9:18
they replaced Tennessee with Bowling Green and Northern Iowa it's just like okay man like whatever if that's if
9:24
that's like what you have to go to to say that Matt rule is like scared of playing Tennessee like it's it's
9:29
pathetic he's not scared Nebraska is not scared of anybody it just this is a Troy Dannon move they wanted to uh have
9:35
another home game and you know they made it work out that way and you know at the end of the day they made the decision
9:41
because they're like hey this isn't going to affect us that much from a playoff perspective competitively it might even make it it might even put us
9:47
in a better position you know if we're more in line with Ohio State and Michigan what some of those teams have done although Michigan is playing
9:53
Oklahoma this year and I believe Ohio State's playing Texas so it's like it's these these things are cyclical you know I mean they those teams didn't play
10:00
anybody the last two years in non-conference or at least Ohio State didn't last year and Michigan didn't the
10:06
two years prior to that okay Nebraska played Colorado the last two years so you know you have to look at it from a
10:12
broader perspective and you know it's not fair to say oh Nebraska doesn't play anybody or they run from competition no
10:17
they they played power four opponents in the non-conference almost I mean almost every single year so that I've you know
10:24
remember being a Nebraska fan they've done this so there's been very few years where they've just played you know three
10:30
um you know group of five teams and Nebraska's playing a power four team this year to open the season Cincinnati
10:36
at Arrowhead and you can say what you want but Cincinnati is a big 12 team now so like you know even they're gotta be
10:42
hungry coming in this season yes so like I mean I get it but it goes back to your
10:48
point that Nebraska probably was scheduling you know in more of an old school sense you know you don't need to
10:53
schedule a power four opponent every single gear when you've got you know cuz some years like in the Big 10 you're
11:00
going to have a top 25 opponent caliber opponent almost every single week you know what I mean I mean it's just it's a
11:06
brutal league and we've seen that we're seeing that in basketball um right now I
11:11
mean I don't I don't envy these guys and like I said yeah would have been cool to uh see Nebraska go to nean Stadium
11:17
absolutely you know and and vice versa but you know hopefully they can work out that big 10 thing but SEC teams at the
11:24
end of the you you need to start playing nine nine conference games because you want to talk about not fair
11:29
like that's not fair that's unbalanced to sit there and play eight conference games and then to go play you know one
11:37
and some of them do some of them don't but they play like a team from the ACC and they're like well that's the same as playing you know nine conference games
11:43
it's not because Big 10 teams almost all the time are playing these extra games so these big 10 teams are actually smart
11:50
to you know take away some of these games until the secc you know the ACC and these other conferences actually sack up and play nine conference games
11:58
okay and quit scheduling you know FCS teams in November like that's absolutely
12:04
ridiculous so please like there's not a single SCC fan that has the right to
12:09
talk about conference schedules until you get that crap off yours okay like when you're playing Stetson or whoever
12:15
like you know South Alabama the week before you play Georgia in November like come on man like it's just a joke you're
12:21
giving yourself an extra Bye by playing teams that are so soft and then you have the audacity to like criticize teams for
12:27
their schedule like why the hell G and AD Oklahoma and Texas is for too scared to play nine conference games like it's just
12:33
ridiculous yeah I mean and you look at those SC schedules and they still make
12:38
the college football playoff so if anything teams are just following the blueprint now just like with nil in the
12:44
SEC teams are catching up to the SEC in nil now or whatever illegal backdoor
12:49
dealings there the SEC did you know you can now do legally and the SEC is complaining about that too so if
12:56
anything you know the Big 10 in Nebraska is a adjusting to the times and they're and you know they're doing it well yeah
13:02
and what's funny is the SEC teams will have these schedules and then they're just like oh we had to play a gauntlet
13:08
yeah man we just we had to play this crazy Gauntlet of like you know Southeast Missi Mississippi State in
13:14
November you know I mean it's just like come on like you guys are okay here's here's one for you here's I pulled up
13:21
old Miss's schedule for the uh purposes of this debate so fman right now so yeah
13:26
so they had a a a rough game against Ferman and then they hosted Middle Tennessee State they did Play Wake
13:31
Forest so you know bully for them Georgia Southern real real tough one so
13:36
yeah but but guess who guess who sat there every single SEC Homer well miss oh miss should be in there they played
13:42
such a tough schedule oh yeah those eight conference games in Wake Forest really difficult you know what I mean
13:48
like it's just like the things that SEC fans say like is frankly embarrassing like you people are embarrassing I mean
13:55
honestly like it's just ridiculous that Tennessee fans would sit there and be like Oh Nebraska's so scared they're not
14:02
going to play anybody like look at your non you guys are scared to play eight nonconference games like it's just
14:08
ridiculous and if they do do this Auto bid thing and this whole Conference Championship thing which I think is just
14:13
really stupid I think that we need to get rid of conference Championship weekend we don't need to expand it
14:19
that's what ruined college football with back to the SEC you [ __ ] in your SEC Championship Game ruin college football
14:26
so anytime anybody that's talk about college football is ruined SEC people you do not get a contribute to that
14:32
conversation because you ruined it idiots are the ones that ruined it yeah like the big 12 would not have existed
14:39
without that stupid SEC Championship game and then all these championship games are why we have this goddamn
14:45
playoff and why it all got expanded and by the bracket so stupid because all these teams are like oh we got to have
14:51
our conference Championship Games be you know important and protected and blah blah blah so we have to give them these
14:56
first round buys even though they don't deserve it and then any time we finally get a 12 team playoff we'll totally ruin
15:01
it because we have to like irrationally make these games important when they're just stupid and they don't even make sense anymore because not everybody
15:08
plays in each other just they don't and I was looking at
15:13
Georgia's 2024 schedule and I just remembered I don't know how I just remembered but it's been a long couple
15:19
months that I almost went to the uh riveting Georgia UMass game at um's
15:26
field on November 23rd and then you know I was wondering why I didn't see you
15:32
know georg's first couple games of the season I saw their opener against Clemson but I just couldn't seem to find
15:38
a channel where they were hosting Tennessee Tech uh in the second week of September and then I'm pretty sure I'm
15:44
not going to be able to find their game against Charlotte on November 22nd of this year unless you know they're
15:51
undefeated and whatever and then you know I mean I guess they need to schedule some some lighter games after
15:58
taking on uh perennial Championship Contender Austin P to begin the season
16:03
second game of the season on September 6 so yeah they can be quiet as far as I'm concerned yeah it's like I didn't even
16:11
know Austin P had a football team and that's probably my bad because everybody has a football team now but yeah it's
16:16
just it's the SEC stuff get drives me crazy so and it kind of and they'll still make the playoffs with that
16:21
schedule like if like that's my point right there and I know you get this I'm just saying this in general they'll still make the playoffs with that
16:27
schedule so why not get in as many easier games as you can I get that it sucks for the fans I really
16:33
do again but I mean there's this blueprint that's being followed and if it works for the SEC then it should work
16:39
for the Big 10 yeah and you know what like I just I have no doubt that when we get to those schedules like it's still
16:46
going to be very difficult the Big 10 schedule's going to be tough and probably not going to be like that worried that we're not playing Tennessee
16:52
so I mean no um it'll be it'll be interesting all these births automatic bursts and everything will be
16:58
interesting but but uh I don't know I'm not sure it's good for college football because I mean I get the big 10 wanting
17:04
four the four best teams but are the four best Big 10 teams always going to be in the top 14 I just I don't know I'm
17:11
just not sure about that and I don't know about that either I'm I'm in agreement with you I'm not sure about
17:17
that either but if you it's either and we've seen this in many instances especially with
17:23
conference conference realignment either get ahead or get left behind and I think you know for better for worse the SEC
17:29
and the Big 10 have made it clear this is what they want so we'll see yeah it will be interesting then so like one of
17:36
the proposals that they're talking about is uh so with these automatic bids like the big 10 wants four automatic bids so
17:42
the way they'd kind of go about doing this at least one proposal this is from Pete NEOS saon 3.com is that you'd have
17:49
like the top two teams in the Big 10 you know in the standings I guess would play each other for the Big 10 Championship
17:55
they would automatically be in so that would be two bursts would be done and then you would have like the number three versus number six team and the
18:01
number four versus number five teams play and the winner of those two games would get the third and fourth automatic
18:07
births and then whoever loses would still have an opportunity to you know be in at large team so I mean I don't know
18:14
it kind of like in some ways it sounds okay but I'm just like why to me like at
18:19
the I just feel like we're GNA be playing games that we've already played during I just feel like it devalues the
18:24
regular season more than we even need to just my idea is this give get rid of the
18:29
conference Championship Game altogether Everybody Plays 10 Conference games okay we play 10 Conference games you play as
18:35
many teams within your conference as you can then we go back to having you know if you have the best record okay like you're Oregon last year 9 and0 your
18:42
conference champ that's it and if you're like if there's three teams that are nine and one then okay you're co-champions the conference can
18:48
determine you know a tiebreaker whether it's being the highest ranked team whether it's head-to-head whatever it is
18:53
there can be a tiebreaker to give one of those teams you know the conference Championship to get the auto by and
19:00
everybody else can get seated in and I just feel like start the playoff a week earlier just get rid of conference
19:05
Championship weekend start the playoff that weekend and like expand the stupid thing to 16 teams and let's just be done
19:10
with it and just like get rid of buys and just 16 teams play at 1 to 16 you
19:17
know the top four all the like the top five Conference champions get into the tournament they don't get an automatic
19:22
like home game or anything they just get in and just see them one to 16 I don't feel like it's that difficult to do but
19:29
for some reason it is because it's taken us like forever to get here and then when we finally have got here we just
19:35
came up literally like the playoff is great but the seating is the dumb like the the seating system was the dumbest
19:41
thing that anybody has ever created to to determine the Sports Champion ever outside like the bow championship series
19:47
like it's just mind mind bottling stupid not boggling bottling it bottles your
19:52
mind because it is so stupid yeah no I agree I agree um you know I I totally
19:59
agree with you about the playing uh regular season matchups for your conference Championship games and stuff
20:05
like that stuff you've already seen I totally agree but I you know anytime there's a money-making opportunity
20:11
college football and sports and life in general is going to go for it so take away a confer CH game you take away the
20:18
opportunity add some cash that's why yeah that's why we're going to get more that's why on the Big 10 like within
20:24
five years that they're going to call it like big 10 Championship Saturday and there's going to be like a game at 10
20:31
and that's going to be three versus six and there's going to be a game at one or two well two because you know we have to
20:37
have four hours of commercials to get through a game so 2 o'clock or 2:30 we'll have the old four versus five and
20:43
then at six we'll have the old one versus two to decide the four big 10 playoff games then also we'll have the
20:49
same thing happening in the SEC so they're just gonna you know why wouldn't they do that they're just that is what's
20:55
going to happen and I mean maybe it'll be okay I guess if you finish you know
21:00
six third better in the Big 10 you'll have a you'll have a one game playoff to to reach the playoffs so I mean I guess
21:05
it's not the worst thing in the world but I don't know it just seems it seems too complicated to me and I don't know
21:11
but whatever it is what it is when do you think they'll change the Big 10 name because we're closer to 20 teams than we are to 10 now I think I don't think
21:18
they're ever changing it they're just going to stick with they've decided now that the Big 10 is their brand name so
21:24
it's going to be it's the same with the big the big 12 could have 50 teams and they're still going to call it the Big 12 or they could have nine I mean they
21:31
just like they got away from yeah it's crazy but uh at any rate
21:37
I don't have any more thoughts on it yeah know so that's our thoughts on Nebraska canceling the Tennessee game
21:44
never know what we gonna get here uh what else are we gonna talk about basketball first though let's talk about
21:50
something positive yeah that uh won't piss me off in anyway so that's Tyson Terry because he really put together an
21:56
incredible performance you know I'm going waitting he signed with Nebraska but he stayed um didn't enroll early
22:02
because he wanted to finish off his wrestling um career he did that this weekend with a torl according to his dad
22:08
um which he yeah he did that during the football season Friday night went into overtime got a 2-1 Victory capped it off
22:15
on Saturday 169 and0 so congratulations to Tyson Terry unfortunately probably
22:21
he's going to miss some time he's getting surgery this week um I don't know how much he was going to play next
22:26
year anyway coming late but um this is a kid that I really feel like could be the next polar bear especially now um that
22:33
he's not wrestling he probably can can uh you know really focus on getting that weight up a little bit and um yeah I've
22:40
always been really high on him I was actually glad to see he got the composite fourstar um as well so he is a
22:47
composite Blue Chip recruit and uh I don't know man I just I really like um
22:52
you know his future and his potential yeah especially when you look at the defensive line editions that Nebraska
22:58
got in the portal it it it doesn't Force Terry to be on the field right away due to lack of depth he can kind of you know
23:05
not rush things develop and you know be ready for 2026 because I don't think he was going to play much this year anyway
23:13
uh just because of how you know the defensive line additions worked out but um man what a career what a wrestling
23:18
career I'm excited for what he could be on the football field and I saw a
23:24
picture of uh him and Riley Van Poppel yesterday and van Poppa is huge and and
23:31
you know he made Terry look small and Terry is huge so I think the defensive line is going to be in good hands for
23:38
the future I really do um you know I think you know one of the things that
23:44
unfortunately happened with polar bear was that wrestling when he went to do wrestling he lost a little bit of weight
23:51
and I think that hurt him I don't know what your thoughts are on that but you know I think as long as Terry is focused on football and can keep that weight
23:58
that I think he can be really really good no I agree I I think that that did
24:04
um you know hurt him a little just he was better when he played you know closer to 340 I think than 3 he wasn't
24:09
bad I'm not saying he's he wasn't bad at all yeah but um yeah van poo looks like a beast so he he definitely looks you
24:17
know ready to maybe take on that that nose tackle role this year if that's going to be um what he has to do I I
24:24
still think we're going to see more fourman fronts but you know at any rate um I I just it's awesome for uh Tyson Terry
24:31
and I really like guys that wrestle and I feel like he's going to be um you know gonna have a bright future so there's a
24:37
some few other uh you know kind of news and notes happening out there one um Rex
24:43
Waterman offensive tackle who's been kind of building up on the board moving up on the recruiting board a little bit just a three star right now from Arizona
24:50
but Michigan some other programs really sniffing around him um he's going to take a visit this spring a couple of
24:56
visits um to Nebraska so a spring visit and then a summer visit so I think that that's obviously important um trying to
25:04
find the tight end Nebraska did make a top five for another tight end Mason boner I want to say is his name yep that
25:09
is his name out of Colorado so they made the top five for him 66 um 200 pounds
25:16
you know it's seems like he's still kind of uh you know getting his recruitment out there but um let's this is a guy
25:23
that I think would be a nice fit for Nebraska um Ryan Mosley's another guy who's going to be uh taking a visit I
25:30
just saw that that was reported uh Danny over he really intrigues me Ryan Mosley I I'll be interested to see where that
25:36
recruitment goes but yeah I think in Nebraska's you know in a good spot there and um Danny Odum uh is coming for an
25:44
official visit versatile defensive back a guy who can play nickel can play Corner can play safety um so I think
25:51
that's pretty interesting tank King a four-star linebacker um has also locked in some official visits so you're
25:56
starting to see you know I'm mentioned that a little bit last week with Nebraska I was like man I'd like to see
26:02
him start locking in I say yeah I remember and here they're starting to do
26:08
it so it's a that's a positive sign because a lot of you're starting to see a lot of other teams fill up their calendars because it is interesting with
26:15
um no we're seeing you know more teams have no spring game so that's
26:20
interesting how it's refecting a recruiting visits but um because Nebraska usually made that spring game
26:26
like a pivotal weekend but you can they're still getting big guys on campus and I think this 2026 class could really
26:32
set up to be as strong as any that Matt rule has recruited here at Nebraska yeah Danny odm's an interesting uh Prospect
26:39
to Florida guy has a good relationship with h defensive back coach Ashton Williams and he really likes Matt rule
26:44
so that's one that I'll be watching um Ryan Mosley a Georgia guy they're
26:50
starting to really make Georgia and Florida kind of a recruiting area uh more so this year that you know we we've
26:57
noticed and even with some of the 2025 commits we're seeing a little bit more Florida uh King Tang King is really
27:04
interesting he's a really really solid linebacker and that would just be an embarrassment of riches in the linebacker room if Nebraska was able to
27:12
make a strong impression on King so a lot of interesting prospects I mean I I think Nebraska still has a very good
27:18
shot with Trey Taylor I mean and so they're already kind of looking at their Quarterback board for the future there
27:24
and so there's a lot of movement uh in terms of recruiting for Nebraska and like you said we were talking about how
27:30
things were a little slow and then immediately they picked right back up so it's clear that this coaching staff has
27:36
been doing a lot of work um and just uh few kind of odds and
27:41
ends I guess but um just reading some things that Sean Callahan reported Jaylen George um a transfer another
27:48
transfer from East Tennessee state's been uh you know impressing so far and we've talked about him quite a few times
27:54
as a guy that you know we both think can contribute next season and Y sometimes you know I feel like with some of these
28:00
trans you know you get these crazy rankings and um you know which I I really don't know trust transfer portal
28:06
rankings that much but I go back to what um Kurt zetti said you know where he
28:11
values production you like over potential and I'm not saying always to do that like I think Nebraska was smart
28:17
to like bet on the potential of like Williams Noy or whatever but but I do think that there is like Marcus Watson
28:23
Trent was like a player of the year last year in his conference and he was ranked like 1600 like you can't tell me he's
28:29
the 1600th best player in the transfer portal like that no way that doesn't compute to me you know it's like I get
28:35
maybe he doesn't have the potential to grow he is what he is but he's still going to come in here and be a attacking
28:40
machine and I feel like Jaylen George is going to be right along you know in that uh in that regard is a guy that we like
28:45
man he probably should have been ranked a lot higher um in terms of his portal ranking and Andrew I feel like Andrew
28:51
Marshall is the same way so I feel like Nebraska got some guys with big upside but some others who have proven they can
28:57
play at the FCS level and I mean you know I thought BL Hill did that and he came in and played pretty well last year when he was healthy
29:03
so yeah and yeah Maris WatchON shent had 120 tackles last season 116 in 2023 and
29:10
113 in 2022 so I don't think those rankings are accurate at all um but it's
29:18
certainly gonna be interesting to see how Jaylen George does because he's the reason why I think Nebraska can wait a
29:25
little bit on Tyson Terry I mean and even to some degree although we haven't seen too much from him Gabe Moore is
29:31
another guy that I would not pencil into the starting lineup but could offer depth while Terry continues to develop
29:37
and heal so I'm very interested to see how the defensive line position plays out and um you know I just think about
29:44
the linebacker position you know last week you have Maris watching Trent danan Mulla uh Dawson Merritt Christian Jones
29:52
I mean that is going to be a really really really good defense a really really good linebacker group and um I'm
30:01
excited to see how Mulla kind of helps Mentor Meritt and Jones because I do
30:06
think he has a lot to offer them in terms of knowledge yeah and I think he's going to
30:11
be a um a bigger piece of this whole thing is a pass rusher than than people kind of realize so I think that'll be
30:18
smart all right so now we're 30 minutes in let's break down um a very big game tonight for the Nebraska basketball team
30:24
against Michigan who they'll probably be ranked different they're ranked number 12 right now but they lost on Friday night to Michigan State so they're
30:31
basically a half game behind Michigan State for first place in the Big 10 so really big game for them whereas
30:36
Nebraska is sitting um what seven and nine now in the conference race four
30:41
games to go so Michigan at home Iowa at home Minnesota at home um they did freak me out a little bit the Joe lonardi
30:48
dropped Nebraska back to one of the last four Buys so technically back on the bubble according to ESPN they're still
30:54
in all the brackets projections being tracked by bracket Matrix like 113 um but their their margin for error
31:02
is like getting Slimmer and if they lose this game tonight then I think they lose like all margin for error but at least
31:07
they have to win the home games against Minnesota and Iowa so that's that's what if they lose this game tonight then they
31:13
really they can't afford any more slip ups at least at home that loss to Penn
31:18
State in addition to being you know a tough loss bracket wise did not Inspire
31:24
confidence um last week and uh yeah so if they so I think you know a big part
31:31
of tonight will be how much if any can berky boy a tonso play I think you know
31:38
he's been a key cog of the offense even when he went down with his injury in the
31:43
Ohio State game he's he had his best game of the season with 15 points uh he offers a lot in terms of passing and you
31:50
know shooting and if he can go tonight I feel better about Nebraska's
31:56
chances yeah they definitely they're going to need him tonight because um Michigan has Vlad golden who is a
32:02
dominant big guy and Danny wolf who's going to be a first- round pick next year you they have two seven-footers but
32:08
wolf plays like a point guard like he really is spectacular um you know he can he shoots like 36% from three had eight
32:15
assists the other night um I mean he looked like LeBron James he had a behind the back pass you know um they didn't
32:22
end up winning the game and he probably should have shot the ball more but they'll put these two guys in the pick and roll wolf and gold
32:28
two seven-footers and without berky out there like it's just going to be hard to see how Michigan's going to defend or how Nebraska's going to defend that um
32:35
you know Michigan state was interesting and how they defended what they and Tomo loves to do this but he just basically
32:41
if you get a really good big you know he'll have guys kind of like cheat down to steal but he doesn't really hard double team and he didn't against Vlad
32:47
golden and essentially he just was like you know forced the other players to try to beat Michigan State and they weren't
32:53
able to do it Michigan's guards were like three or 14 from the field um so I
32:58
think that's it's just I'm Nebraska's not going to use that strategy though that's just not the way that they play
33:03
Fred does love to double hard down on people they do not like to give up shots at The Rim um they like to give up
33:09
three-point shots so I think it's going to be an interesting kind of battle because Michigan wants to get to the rim
33:14
Nebraska doesn't want you to shoot at The Rim um they want you to shoot a bunch of Threes And Michigan shot 23%
33:20
from three-point range they can shoot the ball well from three but they have not shot the ball well um you know the
33:26
even in these last like they've won six out of seven games but they just have not shot the three ball well so I to me
33:32
that's going to be you know the X Factor if Michigan can find its three-point shot they're going to win this game
33:37
because Nebraska's probably going to give them a bunch of Threes you know just based on the way that they play defense and I think it's just going to
33:43
come down to whether those guys make them or not you're muted there all
33:50
right I am muted there we go um you know that's been their MO for them this season giving up a lot of three-point
33:56
shots and so um you know I think it's going to be really important that they are somewhat
34:02
efficient in their Closeouts I I know that's tough too because of the way they play defense but you know and turnovers
34:09
they can't have too many turnovers and um you know I think I think this could
34:15
be a close game but there always seems to be well I'm not going to say always
34:20
but in the losses that they've had it seems like one bad thing happens and
34:25
then the rest of it snowballs so they can't have any snowballing tonight either so some things that worry me a
34:32
little bit Nebraska is 12th in the Big 10 in 2o percentage defense at 53%
34:37
allowed Michigan's like third in the conference but they did just they shot 61% against Michigan State from two but
34:44
they shot so poorly from three it didn't really matter so I mean Nebraska hopefully they can follow you know a
34:49
similar um set of guidelines and I do think Michigan is a very high turnover team you know Vlad golden had four
34:55
turnovers against Michigan State so I do think there's some chances on double teams to try to strip the ball away um
35:01
Danny wolf sometimes too he is a very skilled player but he is still a seven-footer that handles the ball probably more than he's used to um so
35:09
like ball pressure I'm wondering if Nebraska is going to put um Gary or Bryce on him if Berk's unavailable just
35:15
to because he wants to drive he wants to drive to the basket and I feel like you know somebody like Jawan who can get in
35:21
his face who can stick with him um who's going to be just a pest they need somebody who's a pest and I feel like
35:27
Jan Gary meets that description but you know Danny wolf is also seven foot so I'm not sure if how that's going to I I
35:33
just I'm fascinated to see how Fred and these guys try to defend uh Michigan tonight but you know they on the other
35:41
end I do think that they're the matchups are better for Nebraska in terms of like
35:46
Bryce Williams and Jaan Gary you know there isn't anybody on Michigan's lineup that screams to me they can they can
35:53
match up with Bryce I know they're probably going to put Ruben Jones on him who's 66 so basically Michigan's best
35:59
defenders you know for Bryce Williams and Gary are 6'4 and 65 you know maybe Danny wolf maybe they'll try Danny wolf
36:04
but I feel like that'll be you know a bit of a mismatch problem and if that does happen then I feel like Bryce needs
36:10
to try to get to the bucket and get those guys in foul trouble because if you can get one of them in foul trouble I feel like that would really bold well
36:16
uh for Nebraska and it can't just be Bryce and and and Jan it needs to be
36:21
somebody else too I mean Williams and Gary have carried the load offensively
36:26
for this team for basically you know the entire second half of the season and you
36:32
know I just worry about fatigue with those two because it's been quite the gauntlet so somebody else needs to step
36:38
up tonight and offer that kind of third scoring option and if berky can play he's shown that he can do that so his
36:45
health is truly a huge storyline for tonight's game yeah I mean it's not a coincidence that they've been won in two
36:52
since he since he's been hurt um they I really feel like they found their best lineup and just you know from
36:58
from a versatility perspective I do think we're GNA obviously see more braxon Mia tonight even if berky is back
37:03
just to you know he'll probably get a lot of um you know one-onone with lad golden and I feel like berky on Danny
37:09
wolf is the best case scenario um with with his length and his athleticism but you know we'll see Conor Sean's gonna
37:16
have to make shots you know Sam hyberg is gonna have to play well tonight whether that's you know getting a couple of steals hitting a timely three like
37:23
Sam doesn't always have to you know blow up in the Box Score but they do need you know three or four of those typical Sam
37:29
hyberg plays you know an extra pass for a three you know making an open shot getting a steal for a layup just those
37:36
hustle plays that kind of spark this team they need some of those from Sam hyberg tonight and not to get too ahead
37:42
of things here but I am excited to see what Conor would be able to do in a potential starting role next season and
37:47
I think all all all this year is going to build towards that but you know I get why he's coming off the bench but I am
37:54
excited to see him in a starting role next year for sure so Nebraska is a one and a half Point
38:00
favorite tonight um like we said really big game what's what's your prediction Danny well I thought that they would be
38:06
Penn State so I don't know if I can predict but um
38:13
oh I'm gonna say Michigan 7770 I'm gonna say I'm gonna go with
38:20
Nebraska tonight it's really tough to pick um but Michigan hasn't lost two games yet in this big 10 schedule and I
38:27
just feel like that that's I just don't I feel like that this is a quick turnaround after playing Friday night must-win game for Nebraska Michigan has
38:34
won they've won some impressive games on the road but I just feel like Nebraska needs this one more and so they'll find
38:40
a way I do think it's going to be very tight I'm gonna say 7469 Nebraska uh Michigan misses a three
38:48
late to tie it they get some free throws yada y but um yeah Michigan may be a
38:54
little tired and Nebraska I mean they've got like a little bit of of extra legs since not playing since Wednesday so um
39:01
hopefully that will benefit them tonight yeah they definitely needed that rest and um I'm hoping like you said
39:08
that rest pays off for sure because if they win this one then they're then they're in a much better position than
39:14
you know obviously if they lose but if you look at the schedule winning this one would be huge yeah if they just win
39:20
if they just win their home games they won't have anything to worry about um if they lose this game then they I think
39:26
have to win the last two home games plus um probably one in the Big 10 tournament I think they need to get 20 wins is the
39:33
number I think they have to get to so yeah I agree all right then we'll wrap
39:38
it up here on the diamond the baseball and softball Diamond so dating back to Thursday the Nebraska softball team
39:45
posted a 4-2 record they lost to um 11th ranked Duke in Extra Innings they also
39:51
lost to UCLA um like nine to one but they did beat Baylor beat Utah had some
39:56
nice moments they had four home runs in a row at one point against San Jose State which was a new school record
40:02
Jordie ball hit one of those she got two wins over the weekend um also um she was
40:08
on the mound like she couldn't was basically had Duke seven hits or no uh
40:13
no hit or through seven Innings against uh duke or shut out through no through seven Innings against Duke but couldn't
40:18
quite finish it off in the extras so um still a pretty good performance I think for Nebraska we'll see where they're
40:24
ranked after today but I'm pretty impressive for Jord ball though she's still hitting 500 with six homers and 14
40:30
RB her super human yeah her ra is 0.8
40:35
right now so um hopefully you know the rest of the offense and stuff can pick up the slack but she's been pretty
40:41
incredible um was a rough day though on Saturday for the Nebraska baseball team as they swept in uh they lost Louisiana
40:49
I think four to one and then 10 to2 and will bolt was not happy about their
40:54
performance with uh on offense and they were Terri terrible um with runners in scoring position I think he said it was
41:00
pathetic like yeah no you're right it was that they got blown out on Saturday
41:07
by that team but um I still think people are jumping the gun too early I mean this is a team that historically has
41:12
struggled at the beginning of the season and you know then they turn it on late but uh yeah it was pathetic I I would
41:19
agree with will both there that's a very accurate assessment yeah and it just uh the pitching wasn't the pitching wasn't
41:25
great um Ty horn didn't pitch terribly um will Walsh did not have a good day though so I mean it is far none though I
41:33
mean yeah pitching was bad but the hitting I mean because college baseball like four runs allowed isn't that you
41:39
know like you got I mean if you only give up four runs like you should have a pretty decent chance of winning so
41:44
meanwhile Omaha has beaten LSU so so that's what was happening on on on that
41:50
side of the on that side of town on Saturday but um also shout out to I believe it was Dave ball for putting the
41:56
fans in there place after they were complaining about Jordy Ball's performance on against UCLA and the
42:01
team's performance against UCLA shout out to him for uh putting the fans in their place on that one because that was
42:08
obnoxious yeah people are getting crazy and you know and they were like oh I didn't JY pitch in that game well like
42:14
dude for one it's February so maybe just chill out like I'm sure like when the
42:19
games matter like in April and May or whatever if there's an important game Jordie ball is going to have she's going to be on she's going to be on the bomb
42:25
so let's justar too early you know yeah she did have a season ending injury last
42:31
year so I mean let's try to get her all the way through the season but I do think I do think this team has a chance
42:36
though when you have a player like that you always have a chance and there are some really good offensive players on
42:41
this team too so not I'm not I don't trust some of the other pitching that much but um you know we'll see how it
42:48
goes and I do have hope for the baseball team I don't think the sky is falling yet uh you know they turned it on late
42:53
last year we all remember the Big 10 tournament run so I think they'll get things figured out they just seem to
42:58
start slow uh at the beginning of the seasons yeah I'm not that worried it's
43:04
uh you know it's tough for Big 10 teams sometimes these early parts of the schedule are tough for Big 10 teams so
43:11
um you have to sometimes remember that I know it's frustrating but um yeah three and four it's just and you're playing on
43:17
the road too you know they that's the other problem with like Nebraska and some of these they don't get to play any games at home until like March so and
43:25
some of these warmer weather teams get to play a little bit more cuz they're obviously War parts of the country so
43:31
yeah so like I still I still have confidence in this pitching staff and this team I think they'll turn it around
43:37
yeah way way too early to to uh press the panic button so that's what we do best so that is what we do B I will yeah
43:46
I don't know if it and yeah maybe it'll be time to panic if the basketball team loses tonight it might be time to panic for the Women's Basketball team that was
43:53
a bit of an ugly performance on the senior day to get blown out by like 20 at did not see that coming and Alexis
43:59
marowski you can tell her back is really really bothering her so that's something to watch too so we'll see there should
44:06
be some Bracketology updates soon so we'll have some stuff up on that but uh yeah check out the game tonight for
44:12
Nebraska we'll be back later this week for another episode so make sure you guys hit the like button hit the Subscribe button get in the comment
44:19
