Trying to figure out what size fishing line to use can be a pain. Here at https://fishingatwork.com we work hard to help you get back on the water. Thankfully, almost every spinning reel will state exactly what size fishing line it will handle and how much line can be added at that weight.
I show this in the video and it is very important, but some older and different types of reels don't do this. When you run into this particular situation you will have to do some experimentation. If you own different size reels for lightweight fishing, regular bass fishing and for saltwater fishing, you will notice the size difference.
With this change you will be able to guess the size you can use. However, let me be perfectly clear. A bass fishing baitcasting reel can handle 30lb test even if it doesn't say so. You will just have to be ok with 100 yards or less of line on it. This is generally done when you only use it for flipping.
I hope these tips have help you learn how much line to put on a spinning reel....or any fishing reel.
