Check out https://fishingatwork.com/how-to-spool-a-baitcaster-with-braid/ for more information These days putting braided fishing line on a baitcaster doesn't have to be any different than putting monofilament or fluorocarbon on. This is due to the use of better knots "Arbor Knots" and better technology (Stranded PE Fibers). This gives you the feel of monofilament, which makes it easy to tie knots. It also provides the smoothness and long casting ability. However, it does not succumb to the weakness of strength and memory. If you want to know how to tie braided fishing line to your baitcaster or conventional reel check out this video! I will also have a blog post that will go into even more detail on the topic.

Hello, I'm Dwight Norse of Fishing at Work.com
0:03
And today we're going to talk about how to spool braided fishing line on a Baycaster
0:10
Stay tuned. So, 2021 is here and we're all happy for it
0:24
But we have to remember that this is a great time to go through all of our stuff
0:30
has been sitting around. If you're up here in the north, you know, you've been sitting
0:34
around a bit longer because it's cold as heck up here. But be down south, you're still fishing
0:38
but you may have forgotten that things do, you know, break down over time. Mainly
0:45
because fishing line breaks down when exposed to light. Many people think that it will
0:50
last forever and then they'll notice over a period of time that they start to, you know, snap
0:55
off a little easy. It'll rock snap, lose your lower. Hit a little log snap
1:00
Lose your lure. Get a big fish, then you know, pull it in, snap, lose the big fish
1:04
You're like, oh, my luck is horrible. Then you remember, oh wait, how long has this line been on here
1:09
And particularly, we're going to talk about how to improve that. One of the ways is to upgrade your braid
1:16
I have my little joke there. But this is a new type of braid
1:20
If you haven't gotten into new stuff, you're in the old school spywire stuff. This is, like, they have versions of sizes
1:30
And it's basically a braided line that has a variety of strands in it
1:35
And you can increase the number of strands that go around. This is the same thing you do with fabrics
1:41
And they also put a nice little monofilament like coating around it
1:46
which gives it the feel of monofilament or chlorocarbon. But inside is the strength of a very robust braided line
1:56
Now this one is called the X-9 by Berkeley, and it means that there's nine braids. That means there's eight braided lines going around and one in the middle. So actually it's seven around one in the middle, which is eight, and then the outer layer is the monofilament like structure, which makes it feel smooth. And it also does some other things. It lets it not kink. Even that's what monofilament does. It has a lot of memory. And braided is known for not have memory. And that's good because you don't want it to get it
2:28
tangled up in itself, which is a problem I have with spinning reels and And spinning type fates like a spinner or like a Panther Martin and that spins and it spins your line and it spins your reel and next thing you know
2:40
It's all hung up and you got all kinds of bursts and that's happening into your real. That's that cool but this is a big caster
2:45
So let's talk about how to spool it on and this is a little different than a spinning reel
2:52
Because of the way it's positioned it's kind of hard to figure out which way it's going to go but once you know but this is a little bit
2:57
you know but this way you know it's going it's going to be rolling this way so it's pulling in now the
3:03
main thing you want to figure out when i figure out i'm going to tell you is how put it on so
3:12
take out pushing your line you see right here that it's going this way now that's the way
3:20
you want to have it go onto your baycaster so you're going to turn around this way so that's
3:26
on top here and you can use a special device and start it and have it go to here and then that
3:35
will reel it in this way so it comes off spins this way peels off the top goes here and spins
3:43
the opposite way and goes directly onto your line in the same fashion you don't want to do
3:48
backwards and then you have a little bit of memory that braid does have going backwards so it's
3:53
going to fight you don't fight you don't fight the current go with the grain like when you cut you cut meat you gonna cut across the grain when you cut meat but know what I talking about So it very simple You can do that Now there are products online
4:09
You can go to the blog post that I have on Fishing. Outwork.com that will talk about this
4:13
There's things that attach to your rod and make it super easy for you
4:17
You can do it old school like I used to do when I was a kid. And I stuck a pencil right for the middle
4:21
You'll see there's a hole in the middle, right? That's because it used to be on a spooling machine
4:25
And the ones you buy online are the same thing. But you can also use a simple pencil. a simple pencil, a really long one, poke it through there, stick it between your knees on your foot
4:36
and then this hold it there and this between your two feet and it'll unroll
4:42
and you won't have to roll it about spinning around the room and going backwards like we talked about
4:47
It can stay in that perfect position, but I'll leave the DIY to you. So I'm going to get this
4:52
set up and then we're going to talk about what kind of knot should you connect
4:58
with to your Acaster. Before we get to the nap, let's first talk about
5:02
how you wanna set this up DIY. I wanna show you at least one way. So this is the pencil that I'm talking about
5:07
Goes right through the middle, simple little pencil, and the way I do it
5:13
I just figured out like two seconds ago. I've done it many other ways. I usually do the foot method
5:18
Just laid on my foot and reel it up, like my feet
5:22
But the other way to do it, if you have a staircase with some of these
5:27
and you're close enough, either shorter than your pencil. You can stick it right in here. And boom, there it is, your own holder
5:38
It's sitting on itself. It has the pencil to side, so it can't move anywhere. And here's your line
5:44
The little bit of tension that you're using to pull it onto the Baytaster is going to keep it in position
5:50
And it's not going to go anywhere. It's super cool. And it's a very easy thing to do. You don't have to go, you know, the Amazon or wherever
5:58
and get those little devices, you can do it yourself, foot, stairwell, there's many easy ways to do it
6:04
But if you like those ways and you want to, you know, get all your stuff done all at once
6:08
you have thousands of yards of stuff that do your salt water and your fresh water and your bake ass and your spino
6:13
your spinole and your spin cast reel and whatever else you're using, then, you know, go professional
6:19
Get something for the pros. But me, I'm going to do a DIY
6:23
So in my effort to reveal the knot that you should use, the knot of choice
6:28
for when using a big castor reel with braid line or really any fishing line is the arbor knot
6:36
If you've heard of the iber knot, you can go online and see it more clearly or with my website
6:40
I'll have some fishing diagrams there. Sorry, I'm dancing my face, but you need to see what's going on here
6:46
Now what I did was feed it through. I have a lion guide here. Then I have this spool on this
6:51
is the Sabu Garcia Ambassador 650C3. It's old. I've gotten so many striped bass, and this is ridiculous
7:00
It's got a little rust, I gotta do some work on it, but here we go. So this is the line going in
7:05
This is it wrapping around the pole. So what you're gonna do, you're gonna make a circle, really
7:11
You're gonna make a circle, and then you're gonna wrap it around
7:15
I'm gonna say three times. It's like a basic nut, like if you're just trying
7:21
and the teacher kid their first little makeshift knot. You just wrap it, you just make a circle
7:28
and you wrap it around itself three times. And then you get this. See
7:33
It's just wrapped around this pool right here. You see it my thumb
7:37
It's wrapped on this full, it goes back around and it wraps it around itself. Simple enough
7:45
Now, on the end, you do that again. With the, with the end of the end
7:51
of it with itself. So you just pull a little extra line here
8:00
make a circle. Sorry if this isn so visible for you It really hard holding this up because the rod is stuck between my my stairwell Dei it a little hard sometimes see I just going around itself
8:16
One, two, three times, three times. And there we go. There's the second version. See? That's all I did
8:29
on the reel and now I did it the second time up here. So what I do
8:34
So I tighten that one first. That makes a little like cinch knot kind of thing
8:41
And then I pull. And the two of them will meet
8:51
to make a knot. Here's a closer look at the knot
9:01
The knob is done. you see here is a very tight load to the line guide knot it's not one of those big bulky ones
9:09
likely you know all the normal ones you're used to using for your your fishing lures it's gonna stay there
9:15
and it's a cinching type of knot so it's the more you pull the tighter it gets on the uh the actual
9:22
spool so that's what you want now i have some extra you know stuff to cut off there
9:28
don't want to get too close i'd say give it about a quarter inch or maybe even a little bit
9:33
more to make sure that you don't lose any of that. And you also maybe think about getting it a little
9:39
moist so it gets even tighter just like you do with your other cinching knots when you use a fishing
9:44
work. So I sniff it off and that's about how much I like to leave there. I'm a little cautious
9:50
when it comes to this because if I get really low in my line, I don't realize that I have a big
9:55
striper on to a big bass. I get to the near the end of my line and I don't want it to fail
10:00
I don't want to lose that fish. So I want to make sure it's just a enough to provide enough tension and maybe just a little bit of give case a big boy gets in there and I need a little bit of time to get myself
10:10
you know correctly fighting the fish and reeling in the line rather than taking out everything so let me get this in position and we'll start the spooling action which is simple and quick you know how to do that but I want to show it to you my DIY anyway so I'm going to start the spool in action here I got the uh my fishing line hooked up here with the the pencil
10:33
There's my cat trying to attack my fishing line. Make sure you don't put them doing anything bad
10:38
And it's start rolling. As you see here, you'd see it's full turning. It's now going sideways
10:44
Steady action. You don't want to go too fast. I sometimes like to hold the line a little bit straighter
10:53
for the middle, but it's probably better to do its natural action
10:57
As you see here, I have the fishing line at the same height and level as the fishing. The fishing
11:03
them the fishing real and this keeps the line going on to the spool at the optimal level
11:13
If you go at an angle, you come down below, you come to the top, there's more propensity that
11:19
it might not unspool correctly and you might get it in a way you don't want
11:25
Doesn't seem like that will happen but trust me it does, especially if you're doing it with a spinning room
11:33
So I have come across in previous videos where, you know, it states that a certain line spool can take up a certain amount of a fishing line, but I've come across it several times over where it cannot hold what it says it can
11:52
And this is because everything is rated on monoth element, the original version from a long time ago, which has changed itself as well
11:59
All the braided lines, it's off. And with this new line that has monofilament like stuff over top of it which is kind of like floor problem really over top of the very line I sure this is off too This is my first one So it is my first rodeo and I gonna see if it close This is 30 pound test too So I using this for flipping I gonna be using this for using my big
12:23
wopper plopper when the pre-spon happens and I'm gonna really get into some pike as well
12:29
So I got this big ugly stick on top of this epversity ambassador 6500 C3 and we're gonna see what happens
12:36
Another tip. In the past I used to hold this line and I wanted it to go on to the fishing reel as tightly as possible
12:48
But what I didn't realize that when I do this, it actually cuts into the line
12:52
And this can cause tangles as well. Also, it's not the natural way that the fishing line wants to go on to it
13:01
And that will lead to back. thing's happening. You could stop in between and check I feel and on the actual spool to see just how well it's working
13:17
Now if you press on it and wiggle it to left or right and you feel your line moving, that means it's not tight enough
13:23
That means the tension between the object you're using the hole, the spool in space, and the fishing wheel is not tight enough and it's too loose
13:33
So this is why one of you, I don't want you to go too fast, because when you go fast and go slow, you run into problems like this
13:42
This is also another reason to maybe hold that line to keep it tight, but not too tight
13:48
And that's really like, it's really a very fine line between too tight and not
13:55
But basically, if you do no tension with your fingers, you have it on a proper location, like a spool device that you have attached to your rod or you're just di-yye
14:03
way way it should be enough tension to do this you should not be able to touch your
14:09
fishing spool and then move your finger left and right and see or feel fishing line moving
14:13
from left or right as you can see this is the end of the line I actually
14:24
spold up all 165 yards of this 30 pound breakpoint braided line now it doesn't say
14:30
on the Berkeley for so reason what the equivalent is in monofum That's the problem when I saw on other fishing lines, was that the equivalent was not equal to what it stated on my fishing line
14:40
Now, I believe the fishing reel company, a little bit more than the fish line company when it comes to the diameter and stuff
14:47
and what they believe will have worked in their fishing reels. Now, if you look here, you can't really see it, that about 200 yards, which I believe we can fit here, because there's a little bit of line left
14:59
I think I can, this is 165 yards. I believe I can at least get 200 on here
15:03
That's equivalent to 20 pound test monofilament on this fishing rod. So I want to say it's somewhere between 15 pound test and 20 pound test
15:13
equivalent for monofilament for this braided x9 line. So that's the end of the show and the end of the line like I said it earlier
