They Torpedoed Her Despite The Red Cross On Her Hull #WW1 #Maritime
Feb 26, 2026
A clearly marked hospital ship. Lights on. Red Cross visible. And still she was torpedoed.
HMHS Glenart Castle sank in the Bristol Channel in 1918, taking around 162 lives including the entire nursing staff on board. Among them was Staff Nurse Kathleen Mary Fallon, the only Australian servicewoman killed by enemy action during the First World War. More than a century later, the wreck remains a powerful reminder that these are not just dive sites but places of memory.
