SS Cuvier Wreck: Is This Britain's Perfect Dive?

fascinating story behind it. It needs to

be not too far offshore, but kind of far

enough away so that it's not super easy

for loads of people to do. Similarly, it

needs to be at a depth that is

challenging but still accessible to a

wide range of experienced divers.

It also needs to have a cargo that's

part of the story and is in itself

interesting and perhaps even offers the

chance for everyone on the boat to come

home with a small piece of history. The

SS Kouvier has all of that. It's a wreck

that I've known about for ages. It's
0:52
upright, impressively intact. In fact,
0:55
one of the most intact wrecks that I've
0:57
dived in the UK. Not only that, it's

covered in marine life with the
1:02
machinery, the holes, and large sections
1:06
of the ship are still easy to recognize.

The story is one of collision, rapid

sinking, and tragic loss.

It's kind of close enough to shore that

the journey doesn't become a huge

challenge, but it's still far enough

offshore that you feel really pleased

when you get to it. The thing that

really makes a Kovier special is the

cargo. It's got huge quantities of Dutch

crockery in the aft holds and there's so

much of it. It's so easy to find that

pretty much everyone has a chance to

find something. take it home and once

you've reported it, obviously keep a

small piece of the ship's story. And

that's why I think the SS Couvier must

be a strong contender for Britain's most

perfect wreck dive. I've always known

that the diving in Dover is good, but

I've never dived there before. I'm not

really sure why. Maybe it's because I'd

heard that the viz isn't isn't great. Or

maybe it's just because it's quite a

long way from anywhere that I've ever

been. But last year at the IMAS

International Shipwreck Conference, I

heard a Belgium diver called Stefan

Pannis do a talk on diving the

shipwrecks of the Dover Straight. And I

have to say it was it was brilliant. It

was great talk. Had some epic images.

And after that, I knew I had to go to do

and see what all the fuss was about.

About a month ago, I spent nine days

there diving with Chris Webb and Mutiny

Divers. I went there with my friend

Will. Did a whole load of different

wrecks in different conditions. None of

them super deep, which is also really
2:55
nice when you're used to doing the kind

of run times and stuff that we are to be
2:59
able to do a really decent big upright

intact wreck and not have to do hours of

deco. Well, that's very, very special.

We also had the opportunity to dive the

Kovier twice on consecutive days. Both
3:15
dives were different. Both of them were
3:17
really good. And as soon as I'd done
3:20
them, I knew I had to make a video about

it because it is such a good dive. And I

think one of those kind of dives, one of
3:28
those areas that doesn't really get the
3:30
love that perhaps it deserves. There's a
3:33
hardcore of divers who go to do a lot. I
3:36
mean, including some really famous ones.

So Richie Cola, I know, loves diving in
3:40
Dover, and he's a man who's done diving
3:44
all over the world in all sorts of
3:45
places. So if he loves Dover, you know
3:47
it's going to be special. But I wanted
3:49
to particularly focus on the Kovier
3:51
because it was so good. And also within
3:54
those kind of depths that are achievable
3:57
by people who don't necessarily

want to dive on a rebreather, don't
4:02
necessarily want to use Tryix. And I

think one of the things the diving

industry needs and those kind of divers
4:10
is wrecks that can be done like that.

So, the Kovier, if you've not dived it,

if you've not been to DOA before, all

I'd say to you is you should give it a

really good consideration.

I think it's such a good dive, and why,

frankly, I'm surprised a whole load more

people don't dive it.

This is the first dive. You can see I'm

It's about 35 m. You can probably see

The shot is located just uh about where

the engine is on the starboard side. You

interesting things about this dive was

that it took place immediately or the

day after rather the dive where I'd not

made it back to the shot line. Some of

So, I was super keen to make sure I got

back and therefore what you're going to

wreck is really intact. Navigation

around it is super easy. But I knew I

was going to be going inside into the

holds. So, I didn't know what it was

going to be like in there. I wanted to

make sure that I was able to get about.

So, I'm going to use a distance line. In

fact, there it is. And you'll see that

of me. They've attached the waster,

this point on this dive, I haven't 100%

is. What I do know is that somebody else

is down there, and you can see that they

have lined off as well. So I think we

were all probably feeling uh a bit

nervous after the the dive the previous

day. Now the thing that you can see just

to my left hand side is the engine

there. And the thing that is really

clear is the low pressure cylinder. This

is a two-cylinder engine. So the smaller

cylinder, the high pressure cylinder is

going to be closest to the boiler. The

low pressure cylinder, the big one is

going to be nearer the stern. So that is

how I orientate myself. I know that I'm

heading towards the bridge which is the

bit in front of me. I had heard that the

after the bridge was really intact. So I

thought I'd just nip forward before I go

into the holds and have a quick look at

it. The other thing you can see me doing

Really, um, not very popular in the UK.

So, I was very pleased to be able to to

have the chance to dive with it. I've

done I've done quite a few dives with

it. Bit of a spoiler because obviously

It is a computer that I really like.

Like all of the computers I I was

testing, it's got its own strengths and

its weaknesses. But as you can see from

this video or you've seen when I looked

at it, one of the nice things is that it

is it's got some really big numbers on

it. It's really really bright.

Okay, you can see here I'm actually

going I'm partially inside the

accommodation. It's not enclosed, so

there's no roof above me, but you can

see that it's upright. The accommodation

is upright and intact off to the left

and the right. And in fact, just as I'm

coming out here, I think this is uh the

bridge area or the possibly the uh the

galley area. It's not known exactly how

many people died when the Kovier went

down, but it is known that only three
8:25
people survived. The suggestion is

somewhere between 26 to 38 of the of the

crew died. It's also relatively
8:34
interesting that it's considered to be
8:36
the first maritime disaster of the 19th
8:40
century involving an ocean liner. So, as
8:43
well as being a cargo ship, it also
8:45
carried up to 80 first class passengers,
8:48
which I guess this area that I'm in
8:50
here, which is the area where the galley

is, where the accommodation is, this is
8:54
where those uh passengers would have
8:57
been. Fortunately, none of them were on
8:59
uh board when the the ship went down.

So, it was just uh it was just the crew.

What you can see here is that I'm I've

decided I've had enough of looking at

the forward bit of the accommodation and

of the bridge and the galley area. So, I

am returning back to the shot line and

from there I'm going to go down and get

in the holes. The other interesting

thing about the sinking is that the ship

that hit it was much smaller than the
9:29
Kuvier. It was 500 tons. The Kovvier was

well over 2,000. What's really
9:35
interesting is that it seems that the
9:38
smaller ship, the DUV, hit the KVA on
9:42
the starboard side, rear starboard side,
9:44
did loads of damage to the bow of the
9:46
dove.

But despite this, at the subsequent
9:49
board of inquiry,

which was a French one, they blamed the
9:54
Kovier for the incident and in fact
9:56
awarded damages against the Kovier to to

the DO. I have no idea how that works,

but it's it's it's out there on record.

So you maybe maybe there's some reason.

I don't know. All I know is that if I'm

actually two boats. There was Maverick,

which is the one that I was on, and

there was Renegade, which is also part

of Mutiny Divers. On Renegade, they had

uh a load of guys on twin sets and some

guys on rebreathers. And if you've got a

twin set that clearly this is a very

achievable dive. What makes it even

better obviously is the opportunity to
11:40
accelerate your deco. So having a 50%

mix or or something like that. And loads

of the uh the guys on the other boat did
11:48
that. Needless to say it's also the
11:50
ideal depth if you've got a mod one CCR

qualification.

Right. So where are we in the wreck?

I've dropped into one of the holds. the

hold just behind the engine. And you can

see there I'm having a bit of a problem

with my reel, which I'm I'm in the

process of sorting out. And I'm what I'm

going to do from there is I'm going to

head uh even more sternwoods.

And that's where the hold is with the

crockery, which of course is is the one

where pretty much everyone wants to go.

So you can see I'm still faffing around

with my reel. I think must have been

when I when I reeled it up last time. I

managed to get it jammed, but I've

sorted it out and I'm now uh heading off

on my way. One of the things on this

first dive is I didn't know exactly how

far into the wreck I needed to go, which

is why I spent quite a lot of time doing

what I'm doing now, which is uh looking

around. I also drop I'm going to drop

what's over there. Not here cuz clearly

there isn't enough room to get round.

But then this bit here. So this is

another nice thing about this wreck is

that you can dive it on multiple levels.

So you can see here I'm about 37 m. The

previous deck I was about 35. Once I go

in there it's going to be about 39ish m.

you know that once again that's really

kind of unusual particularly uh wrecks

that I dive in around the west country

the southwest of the UK you just don't

get wrecks that are this intact well not

anymore anyway they've been destroyed by

the the waves the weather just kind of

erosion and and what that does to what

what that does to these things but here

in the do straits

It must be that the effect of the the

waves aren't as strong. So therefore,

they remain more intact.

Now, where I am in this wreck, you can

see there's also some coal. So, I must

be kind of, in fact, these are not coal.

or some sort of shell. Anyway, but

there's various different bits and

pieces in here. I spend quite a lot of

time on this first dive messing around

here trying to get various bits and

pieces out and none of them are intact.

None of them are worth uh doing. So, I'm

going to what I'm going to do is I'm

going to skip forward here. So, I've

pretty much finished messing around with

all that stuff there. I'm now moving

further on this deck into the wreck.

You can see that there's quite a lot of

sand down here and and maybe that's one

of the things that has helped protect

the wreck because the inside has got

quite a lot of of sand accumulated in

it. So maybe it's it prevents some of

the buffeting by the the wind or the
14:47
waves or whatever. Who knows? Also, I
14:50
suspect maybe because it's on the east
14:52
coast or kind of the eastish coast of
14:54
the UK, it doesn't get all the uh the
14:57
battering that you get in the English
14:59
Channel where waves and all that huge

Atlantic swell kind of comes up. And and
15:05
I think that that ground swell must be
15:08
part of the reason that the wrecks in
15:10
the English Channel are so badly
15:11
battered. Unless it's a collier, nothing
15:14
is really going to be significantly
15:16
intact. For those of you watching the

depth, you can see I'm down to 40 mters

here. I'm still in the ship, but I'm now

on the port side. There's kind of on

this deck, there seem to be a a gradual
15:29
slope down um towards the seabed. And

behind me, you're going to see it in a
15:36
moment, I think, is actually a bit of

missing uh plate which which gonna lead

me out onto the seabed. You can see I

found a few bowls and sauces there.

They're all plain white. So, not

particularly interesting. The Kovier

famously has those beautiful brightly

colored uh bowls which uh and rice bowls

which I'm after. The thing that I'm

particularly keen to find is one of the

chamber pots because I've been told that

they're increasingly rare and you tend
16:06
to have to dig around in the sand to
16:09
find them. So, that's what I'm doing at

the moment. I also know that they're
16:13
full of smaller bowls. So, typically you
16:15
find a chamber pot and inside it you
16:18
find a load of rice bowls. So, so that's
16:20
what I'm kind of after. And I'm a little
16:22
bit frustrated at the moment because

I've actually been down quite a long
16:25
time and I've not really seen anything

that looks as though it it it could be

one. All I've got is loads of broken

stuff. As it turns out, I'm I'm in the

wrong place.

And as I've explained to you, I'm right

in the bottom of the uh the wreck on the

uh starboard side.

And this here is a uh the hole that I

mentioned, the one that goes out onto

the seabed. And you can see I'm just

is so intact, so easy to navigate that

anyway, I've come out of the wreck now.

This is the seabed. Uh, I'm sure you can

see the depth there. It's about 43 44 m.

Once again, entirely within the range of

somebody who is diving open circuit or

Now, what I'm going to do now is skip to

the bit where I find the the kind of the

main stack of crockery. And that is, as

level, and there's the actual deck

level. So, it's the middle level and

it's further stern than I've been. So, I

And if you do that, you'll end up at

somewhere like I am here. You've got

those bales of I don't know, copper wire

or something on the left hand side that

I've just gone past there, but you'll

You start to see there's all sorts of

interesting things. There's those uh

white that white stuff there, which I

think is some sort of cargo that must

have been carried in bar in barrels. I

think the the wood has rotted away from

the barrels. You also get followed

around by fish as you've probably seen

that there's loads and loads of fish

inside this wreck. They kept on

following me around everywhere I went

and that was really nice as well.

Obviously, I'm not a super fishy person,

but what I am is a kind of person who

loves uh underwater treasure. And once

you get here, as you can see through my

torch beam, there is stuff everywhere. I

thought that bit that I was digging

around in earlier on had quite a bit,

but in here there is just loads and

loads of stuff. Now, at this point, I've

kind of realized that I probably don't

You may remember earlier on I said that

I was very very keen to find one of

those uh chamber pots. And so what I'm

know there's got to be one here

somewhere. There's just too much stuff

for there not to be. And no matter how

many other divers have dived this, they

certainly haven't got through the I

in this wreck. And underneath that sand

is going to be all of those other uh

chamber pots. They're there. They've got

to be there. It's simply a case of

finding them. Meanwhile, I mean, you can

see I'm finding loads of other things.

The these things were described to me um

as looking like the sort of thing that

you'd get in at your granny's house.

People have also said to me, "Look, you

know, it's great. It's nice it's come

off a shipwreck, but does this pass the

car boot test?" If you're not familiar

with the car boot test, basically what

it says is if you were to go to a car

boot sale and you were to see these

things for sale, would you pay money for

them? Now, the answer to that is clearly

no. So, nothing in here passes the car

boot test, but I don't care because it

isn't just about the car boot test. It's

about context. And for me, I know where

these objects have come from.

I know that they're off a shipwreck. I

know they're over 100 years old. Well,

125 years old. And that provenence and

the value to me because obviously they
21:23
say about exploration and adventure

and frankly good times with friends. You

that to me is every time I look at one

of these cups for instance, that is what

I will see.

Now, I've just skipped forward a bit

further again because there's a whole

load of me wafting sand and and sort of

pulling broken chamber pots out of the

sand before this happens. You can see
