The Final Hours of German U-1021 #uboat #ww2 #navalhistory

In March 1945 the German submarine German submarine U-1021 sailed on patrol with a crew of about 49 men, many of them young sailors in the final months of the war.
What they did not realise was that the Allies often had a strong indication of where German submarines would operate thanks to intelligence gained from Enigma decrypts. Across those predicted routes in the western approaches, the British laid extensive deep water minefields designed specifically to catch U-boats travelling at depth to avoid aircraft and radar.
Somewhere off the north Cornish coast, U-1021 entered one of those minefields and struck a mine. The submarine was destroyed with the loss of all hands.
There was no distress signal and no survivors.
Today the wreck lies on the seabed as a reminder of how dangerous the Atlantic had become for the final generation of young U-boat crews in the closing months of the Second World War.
