Yo, man. Honestly, one of the most talented MC's. Yeah. Not to mention he's a vocalist,
0:06
but one of the most talented MC's we've heard in a long time. That man was spitting in languages we couldn't even
0:12
break down what he was saying. Caliente. Come on, man. We know this dude. Rhythm and flow. He put Rhythm and Flow on the
0:18
map. Yes, sir. They talk about the celebrities that were attached, but if they didn't create a winner that went on
0:24
to do awesome things, then it would have it would have taken away from the brand of rhythm and flow. And because he be
0:31
he's such an amazing artist, all-around individual, Grammy nominated actor,
0:36
author, musician. He made them look excellent. Fast forward years later, he's still on the
0:43
rise. Yes, sir. How many? Wait, how many 20 you How many Grammy nominations you
0:50
got? Uh, three at the moment. Three at the moment. Three at the moment. I like that. We going to get the win soon. We going to get the win soon, man.
0:57
Get the win soon. I feel I'm I feel like we're all related. His brother sir, came up here not too long ago. Um, his entire family
1:04
is gifted, but I want to welcome him back. He was the first to come up here, I believe. Give it up for the one and
1:10
only D. Smoke. Yeah. Thank you for having me. It's a
1:16
pleasure every time. Stop playing, man. I wanted to ask you some questions, too, man, that were very
1:22
non non um industry related. Um because I was um thinking about
1:28
uh what we're seeing going on. I know you're a former educator, right? Absolutely. Right. And so when I I always wondered
1:34
like uh what do educators think about what we're seeing in our country right now? uh when you see how much the
1:42
government is infiltrating uh college campuses and and curriculums and trying and deciding what it is we can or cannot
1:49
teach in classrooms whether it's religion um um what you know politics whatever it
1:57
may be as an educator how do you think that kind of uh
2:03
interference if you will um impacts a kid how does that impact
2:09
your job as an educator? Well, first and foremost, as an educator, I have an interesting
2:14
relationship with uh public schooling with with government funded schooling
2:20
all together. Um, if we look back at the history of it, we got to um we got to
2:26
address what schooling was designed to do, you know, create a class of employees and workers. Um, and even
2:34
college, college is no exception to that. is just that these are the more high paid employees and workers even if
2:40
it's lawyers you know it's not designed to create independent thinkers. So some of now not to not to knock what
2:47
college is college is a beautiful opportunity to connect with the world's future leaders to to learn things that
2:53
can put you in a position to provide for your family. But the most important things I've ever learned whether it be
2:58
in high school or in college were the things that I learned in the unwritten curriculum. Right? So I have my brother
3:04
uh Greg as part of my management team. We went to UCLA together. Um the things the work that we did and who it put us
3:11
around um that's where we learned the majority of the things that carry us through life today. We got the we got
3:16
the piece of paper. We know how to get a a right and the habits we we get from knowing how to study and a class and
3:23
learn and memorize and all those things, they carry into other areas of our life. But it's never been the curriculum
3:29
itself that was the important part of of schooling for me. It was
3:35
it was what else can you use these skills to acquire. So it's what are you reading on your own and all those
3:40
things. That being said, um it's it's it's embarrassing. It's abysmal. It's
3:47
it's all bad that you use uh education. You use the classroom to indoctrinate
3:52
people versus to uh liberate them. Not to be too, you know, revolutionary, but
3:58
you know, if we create a class of people who uh who are freeth thinkers, then then
4:05
people who whose goal is to maintain power have a hard challenge ahead of them. Yeah. You know, so but
4:11
um it's no surprise, you know. Okay. The more you learn, the more you realize there's been some weird [Â __Â ] happening
4:17
at all times throughout the history of government, education, all this stuff.
4:22
But if I say too much, they gonna be trying to come for me. Okay, I see that. Okay. But yeah, hey, go stay in school. God
4:28
damn it. Stay in school. Stay in school. Go to school. Study hard. Just just make sure your make sure your
4:34
personal reading list is like Nips. You know what I'm saying? Like read Nipsy Hustle. Rest in power.
4:41
Rest in power. You know what I'm saying? Um like so some of my favorite books are like uh
4:48
uh Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. just tools that help you develop healthy perspectives and you can carry
4:53
into your day-to-day. Uh the alchemist for anybody following pursuing a dream
4:58
or alternate path. Uh I like Will Smith's book will you know it's a really good book.
5:05
Four agreements uh uh Matthew McConna's book Greenlight is
5:10
actually surprisingly really good. But Matthew McConna Matthew McConna's book is good. You know I'm a big fan of that guy
5:16
man. His book is really good. Uh, did he do Mississippi Burning? Was that Matthew who did that movie?
5:22
Did he play? He did A Time to Kill. A Time to Kill. A Time to Kill with Sam Jackson. Yeah. Time to kill. That's what
5:27
it was. Yeah. Yeah. So, it's a lot of good ones out there. And then Nips includes like the
5:32
22 immutable laws of marketing and 22 immutable laws of branding and all these things that are really useful for
5:39
artists. Um, so just as long as you taking all those skills you acquired to
5:44
create your own curriculum, you'll be straight. You'll be straight. There's a line on the record that we just played, Na Na
5:49
Na, featuring my guy Lar Russell. Um, that's a Death Row song, too, right? Yes, sir.
5:55
Okay. And in it, it says, Lar Russell said the line where history sounds different when
6:00
a white man tell it. That ain't even a question. I just want to see how you respond.
6:09
Is history real that we learn in school? Is it real? Oh, if if you only learning what's in the textbooks, it's been for
6:16
sure uh modified, you know, and that's just it's it's factual. Yeah.
6:21
You know, there's there are things that are intentionally left out. We're we're watching the rewriting of history happen
6:27
all over again. You know what I'm saying? With them trying to determine what not to put in. It's called, you
6:33
know, revision is his history. Um because, you know, people don't want to
6:38
take ownership. Black people ain't got no reparations and they act like reparations don't happen. Yeah. You know, and I ain't always going to
6:44
get on here and be revolutionary. I wanted to be like, "Well, what's up, Englewood? We You know what I'm saying? What up, Englewood? Throw them out."
6:51
Okay. For sure. But, but Englewood is a revolutionary community. Right. Right. I say that to say so many
6:57
communities have received rep reparations. White people received reparations for the slave the the value
7:03
of the slaves they lost. You know what I'm saying? Like, here here goes some money cuz each slave was worth this. So
7:08
we going to comp you, you know, I I believe and I might be misquing, but I believe the Japanese American community
7:14
received reparations and you know, and but I just think it's too much of a uh I
7:20
don't know. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I know you thinking deep smoke. I
7:25
know. No, you're good, man. You're doing good. I'm just asking you as a human being, you know. Absolutely.
7:31
Um how you feel about these things because of the way your music hit. Yeah. Um, I know that is it's more to your
7:39
music and to what you sing or rap about. It's more to it than just words. When
7:44
you make a song, you know, called Frequency, that's that's language I use all the time. Nephew in here. Say your
7:51
nephew name. So get Hey, I got my nephew Rick. Nephew Rick aka Ricardo Williams.
7:57
Rick, get get just next to your your uncle real quick. Just come in the camera one time. Just say hi. So you
8:03
ever been on a radio show like this before? This is your first your first speaking to the mic, Rick. What's going on, people? How's it going?
8:09
My name is Ricardo, California. I know he the next generation from your family. So, he about to be that one that
8:16
shoot up like MJ. Yes, sir. Right. And I want you to be able to say when you win, whatever accolade.
8:22
I'll never forget the first time I was on the radio. It was with Sway and Heather B and Tracy G.
8:27
All right. All right, man. You go back to your chair, dog. You did your thing. That's love, man. That's love. Yeah, I
8:33
want him to have that, man. That's love. And and Ricardo's on a song with me. Uh he wrote the hook and it was
8:39
really for him, but he pressed play on it for me and it's on the deluxe version of uh Black Habits. It's called Ken Folk
8:46
and that's his voice. I know this here folk my Ken Folk afro smell like
8:51
Murray's tieing docks. Damn. You know, come do that hook for us. Is that okay? Just go. Slide your chair over. Bring
8:57
your chair over, man. Which camera should he look at PB? Put them on the camera. Hey, I'm going to scoot over.
9:03
Scoot over. Use your use your uncle's mic, man. Come on, bro. This is it, man. This is it, brother. This is where it
9:09
all begins, man. Yeah. He He'll He'll adjust. Wow. This is Ricardo's
9:15
Stay in the shot, D. Stay in the shot. So So he can't claim you wasn't there.
9:21
He can't deny me. All right. All right. How this fo my folk? Yeah. This fo my folk. Many foes.
9:31
This ho my folks in these perms all in these words going
9:38
have lows don't be stirred this my folk I like that yo get on that other mic
9:44
real quick D you don't mind if I'm freestyling now you putting people to work I'm freestyling right now yo nephew give
9:50
me a capella you got 16 okay right okay D yeah you okay let me hear you go
9:57
uh people are holding their breath when I walk in a room, this is only what I've
10:02
been told. I never assume. I come and cool, calm and collected. This is true until it's time to get big and blow up
10:08
like my soon. Ooh, now my energy rains down. The women feel it too. But I keep it cool, calm, calm and smooth out the
10:15
womb. I've been tapped in like water fountains and schools of faucet water late night dripping in your bathroom.
10:21
Dude, has it said yet that I'm the pudding and the proof? Every blessing and talent is all from God's move. He
10:27
just laid out the plan and told me that I can't choose. Whichever way I pick and I'm never going to lose. Boo. To any
10:33
soul listening, thinking you can do better, please get a clue. Don't believe that voice that's in your head is cool.
10:38
Cool. The only way I'll ever be better is voodoo. I've been a one since day one. You boo. Shout out King Couta cuz
10:45
he said y'all boooo stinky boo poo boooo. And if you try and spread that, we hopping out and boom you. Rest in
10:51
paradise. Candle light gatherings for you. Of course by name not your life cuz we don't shoot again we keep it cool and
10:58
collected this true until it's time to get big and blow up like my soon like monkeys out the zoo a patient out to
11:04
lose straight 50 it's a man on the loose I don't think I'm crazy cuz I'm tightening on my screws unhinged for
11:10
sure but I keep it real cute up to go at any moment I pursue so keep holding your
11:16
breath until you turn blue cuz I stay low key so don't test me I fire not
11:21
freeze have fun like we while You try to squeeze. I go home straight to sleep.
11:26
Peace. Let's go. Let's go.
11:34
But he showed up ready though. That's what I love. He showed up ready. Congratulations. Thank you. Thank you
11:40
for real. He showed up ready. I love that. I got to follow that. You got to follow that. I got to follow Rick. Oh man.
11:46
You got it, man. You got it. Yo, I love that. Yo, you said we'll boom, we'll jump out and boom
11:52
boom, but only by name because we don't shoot. What did you say? What was that line?
11:58
Get in the mic. Yeah, we got to get to the mic. I said, okay, jump out and boom, you boom you.
12:03
Uh, yeah. Rest in paradise kind of like gatherings for you. Uh, of course by name, not your
12:08
life, cuz we don't shoot. I like that. Yeah. Again, we keep it cool, calm, and collected. It's true.
12:14
Hey, you the future, brother. You give us hope. Yep. Yes, sir. Okay. All right. Appreciate you. All right. Thank you.
12:21
That's that frequency he on. See, that's what frequency do, bro. I got goosebumps off that frequency,
12:29
right? Frequency is such a powerful word to me. You know, it means so many things
12:35
and he just upped our frequency. Your nephew just by vibrations and all of that is real. We may not see them, but
12:42
we feel them. Absolutely. Right. And when we say tap into a different frequencies, I think we're
12:48
surrounded by frequencies for sure. This atmosphere that we can't see just like we can't see the air we breathe,
12:54
but we know it gives us consciousness cuz the moment we stop breathing, what happens, right? So, it gives us information. The air
13:01
information is in the air. It's in the oxygen. Sure. And some of us tap into higher frequencies, right?
13:08
When did you learn that ideology? When did you start tapping into frequencies, man? Um, it was a process. You know, it
13:16
wasn't one point, but I think, uh, I remember going to UCLA and, uh, just, you know, coming out of
13:22
Englewood, I come from a family of like very talented people and intellectual people,
13:27
but aware like consciousness was something that UCLA kind of took me down that path, right? cuz I remember I had a
13:35
mentor who hired me for my first uh college job where I was tutoring and mentoring people trying to get more
13:41
black students in college and uh he introduced me to like the black community at UCLA and everybody was on
13:48
their revolutionary tip you know and as somebody coming from the hood I felt like everybody was so pro black but I
13:54
was like bro people be tearing black people up you know it be us. So I'm like
13:59
what's this revolution we all talking about? And of course they they kind of taught me like there are reasons why our
14:05
communities look different. So we sit we blame oursel and it becomes like a crabs in a barrel mentality when in actuality
14:12
it's lines that are drawn that keep funding from coming in and keep our schools from being better and all this
14:18
stuff that and and then crack let's not talk about how that was strategically placed and all these things. So once I
14:23
started learning I was like oh dang okay it is things will be different if we had more
14:28
control over our community. So I think the consciousness thing kind of led me down that path of being like it was
14:34
revolutionary first and then once that got exhausting like we you can only march so much till you start learning
14:40
like okay I got to work on me and the more I show up with that higher vibration and I'm doing the work inherently without necessarily
14:48
you know you can't like even Martin Luther King said you know hate can't drive out hate so you can't march your
14:54
way into freedom it happens you know on the inside first revolution will not be televised It's a it's a change in you.
15:01
So when you carry that with you, you know, it your environment change. I like to believe when when like I said in
15:08
in na na I pull up in my city like I'm some to see already legendary and being in my presence is a luxury coded in
15:15
February you know that's like when I step into a room I I believe I know I changed the room and that's and I I like
15:22
to be around people who feel the same way about themselves you know cuz when we laugh it's it's coming from a
15:28
different place right you know cuz despite the hurt we might be experiencing it's okay
15:34
you know what I'm saying. So, yeah, man. I love that, man. When I come into the room and I was just talking about the D smoke
15:42
walking through the hallway and I wasn't kidding, man. The way you was walking through this hallway, it's like you
15:48
owned it. Do you think and and I'm not even when I reference this, I'm not referencing the the the
15:54
battle um with Kendrick and Drake. I don't I rarely reference that, right? Um
16:01
although I'm from hip hop, you know, obviously I like a great balance. Good. Good. You know what I'm saying?
16:06
Yeah. But entertainment the frequency in LA has changed. Oh, for sure. What how how so in your opinion?
16:14
Um you know, I I I believe there's a pride that like one
16:21
LA never doubted LA. Yeah. Even when when the South had the ball, when when New York had the ball, you
16:28
know what I'm saying? We like we still us. But when we have the ball, everybody's like, "I told you." You know what I'm
16:34
saying? So it's that energy where we're like the West is, you know, remember Outcast
16:39
was like, "The South got something to say." We've been like that, too. You know what I'm saying? So it's just um there are these seasons and it's a West
16:47
Coast summer, you know what I'm saying? And um it's just a a beautiful thing. It's a point of pride, you know? Shout
16:54
out to my home girl uh Storm who who's like to me she's like the dancer. She's
17:00
like if you like got to pick one person that can
17:06
visibly represent how the West Coast feel is Storm get in motion. You know
17:12
what I'm saying? She active and you know and and so that's how we all feel in in
17:17
dance form. You know what I'm saying? Shout out to Storm. Shout out to Charms. You know
17:22
Charm Lana. Yes, that's mom. And she went to UCLA with us, too. Charm went to you. Yes. Yes.
17:27
Yo, I'm I'm co-hosting with her the Red Bull dance your style finals this coming
17:34
weekend in in the Bay. And I've only seen Charm Badana. I'm I've only seen
17:39
her on videos and I get to I'm just really, you know, my dancing prowess goes back
17:45
to the 90s. So, I ain't dance since the 90s, right? But I'm just there representing the B boy, B girl culture
17:52
cuz that's a part of hip-hop. When we talk about the culture, there's certain elements we don't mention. We think it's
17:57
just rap, you know, it's not. B boy, uh, what? Graffiti, craft riding. Well, you know, it's all,
18:03
you know, DJing, you know, it's a mindset is MCing, of course. U, so I'll be hosting with them. Uh,
18:10
well, with Charm this weekend, man. Interesting. Send my love. I will, man. Please do. D Smoke is here. we going to play this
18:17
frequency record and come back and open up these phone lines. Uh Lucky Day is on this song.
18:22
Yes, he is, man. Shout out to Lucky Day, man. He he blessed the song and and it's not it's not common that I like it's my
18:30
song, but somebody go first, but I was like, nah. I was like, go ahead, bro. Do you? Because I think um I think even
18:38
Nipy Hustle said like if you if you look at rap competitively, a lot of times you
18:45
already downplaying your own unique advantage to the the field of rap, you
18:50
know? And so a lot of times we fall into that out rap people bag, you know what
18:56
I'm saying? And so to have him go first, it's kind of like nah, set the tone so we could just talk,
19:02
you know? Like some of my favorite songs, if you think about like Spotty Dopalicious,
19:07
it's like a incredible beat and some straight up storytelling. I don't even know if it's whole verses on there, you
19:13
know? And so that's just kind of the vibe we wanted to establish on Frequency. And it's by far one of the
19:19
favorite records uh that I've ever done for me. One of your favorites that you've ever
19:24
done. Frequency. I'm just proud of that one. And I produced Frequency like this album. I produced about half of the
19:31
album and and it's just getting back to how I started in music, you know. Um I started off,
19:37
you know, playing piano. My mom taught me piano. Um and then my uncle, I went to his
19:42
house and I saw his whole production setup and and he let me make a beat at 10
19:48
years old on his, you know, equipment. I still remember what I made, you know, and and but that was my beginning. That
19:55
was the first time I said if I do music, this is what I want to do. I want to produce, you know, and um and so on this
20:02
project, I got back to my roots, so to speak. Came full circle. Absolutely. Yeah. So,
20:07
feel good. Oh, but of course, this is frequency, man. We going to open up these phone lines. 8 8887423345.
20:15
I want y'all to start having conversations about some of the most talented people. Not to put down others
20:21
but to elevate some that song frequency when you listen to the live
20:27
instrumentation. I was just asking D smoke who played what and how many
20:33
instruments did you play live on that song frequency on on that song. Oh, there you go. On
20:40
that song I played um I played three. I played the guitar that leads in. You
20:45
hear that? Um I played the bass. All right. I I could have let my uncle play. He's far better than me and at playing the
20:52
bass, but uh it was just a simple thing I wanted to do with the bass slide and then um um I played keys on there and
20:58
then of course I programmed the drums. That's the only thing that wasn't like live. It wasn't live drums and then um
21:04
my homeboy Marcus Paul played the trumpet on there and my wife Sheree played the violin.
21:09
Man, you hear that? That's beautiful, man. That's a that's a lovely mesh right there, Tracy G. It truly truly is. And that's a
21:16
beautiful song, D. But per usual, that's what you're so gifted at doing. I'm
21:22
wondering because you have so much wisdom and you are a conscious
21:28
individual and you're an educator. Oftent times when those qualities are within a person, the outside world may
21:35
perceive that you don't have any guilty pleasures or like you don't have fun, you don't have any cheap thrills. Like
21:41
Sway, for the most part, he'll be on his green juice, but if there was a Snickers in front of him, he would gobble it up.
21:46
You know what I'm saying? I don't like this example. And it's Reese's. He don't like it cuz
21:53
you got the Snickers wrong. It's actually Reese's peanut butter cups. Thank you, Heather. But snitching.
22:00
I'm wondering what's the the the ying to your yang? Like, is there any kind of
22:05
like mischief that Dmoke likes to dabble in from time to time?
22:10
Damn, his nephew put his head down when you said that. I like without incriminating myself. No, I like
22:19
uh I like fighting like and not street fighting. I don't want no beef. I'm not I'm not one to talk no trash at the bar.
22:26
But if anybody within 20 pounds of me up or down 30, we
22:31
go up to 30 up or down because we didn't for sure locked up with some 200 pounders wants to get in the gloves. I I
22:39
gotta take all comers, you know, boxing gloves. Boxing gloves. I'm I do martial arts and that's my thing. And I'm
22:46
talking weekly, you know. I did this week. You know what I'm saying? Oh, shoot. And I'm talking about I I got I locked
22:52
up with this boy that was that was looking like somebody in here got
22:57
behind a boxer. Come on. Let's go, man.
23:02
Come in the room, John. Come on. This is about to be a face off. About to have a face right here. A live fade right here,
23:10
man. Let me see. Go ahead. Get that. Get Come on. Come on. Do a face off, man. In this corner weighing about 170 lbs, we
23:18
got D smoke. In the other corner weighing about 125 lbs, John Z. Come
23:24
here, John. Come on, John Z. Come get to the mic. Step to the mic. Come on, man. John, man, what you want to say to your fans, man. This is a big
23:31
fight for you, brother. This is a big fade for you, man. This a big fade for you, John Z. Man, you might turn over. Yeah, there
23:37
you go. Go ahead, man. Come on. I mean, Dm Smoke, he you want this fire. Hey, look. You know, my style is
23:43
impregnable. I'm ferocious. I want his kids. Oh, praise the Oh, Lord.
23:51
All right, we come on. Head, body, head, body. Hey, man. Look,
23:58
you got the glove. Leave with your faints. Leave with your faints. Change your rhythm. Okay. Double double up on the jab. Work your
24:03
way in. Yeah. Stay on the outside of the front foot. What we talking about? Different levels. The whole nine. Different levels. Hands up, chin down,
24:10
brother. Okay. All right, John. Cool. John. John, quit threatening our guest.
24:15
That feels too ancestral. I don't want no problems with John.
24:21
Feel like I'm fighting for something else. I I can't do that. That's crazy. Were you catching a lot of fades though
24:27
growing up in like Oh man. Yo, your nephew is nodding like how many fades would like
24:32
Oh man. So Pops was locked up at first till I was about eight years old. And so for sure when Pops was locked up,
24:40
it was like bare knuckle regularly. I was and and I loved school too. So I was
24:46
getting good grades but on the yard that the only thing that kept me from getting kicked out is that my teachers was like
24:51
he's a great kid. But on the yard it was wow. You know like cuz elementary kids don't have no
24:57
feel and I'm talking about I'm fighting early as 6 years old. Like it's active. It's up. Yeah. You know and
25:02
some kids don't remember their childhood that early but when when you forced to
25:08
grow up early your memories kick in early you know. I remember, you know, putting my hand on the glass and pops
25:13
being locked up. I remember all that. So when kids, you know, kids with no no
25:18
mercy, no filter, they like your mother this and that. And I'll be like, you know, all right, whatever. I see my
25:24
mom's every day, but say something about Pops, though. And you know, they pause for a second
25:29
like like he's not gonna do anything. And then they be like, "You're a daddy."
25:36
You know, I'm on them. I'm talking about I'm talking about and I'm still small enough for anybody to break up the
25:42
fight. The the nurs's assistance lady could break up the fight and I'm on like I'm getting picked up away from the
25:47
fight. Like come here, get out of here. You know, you fighting in the air, right? You fight. Exactly. Let me out. Yeah. You know, and so, but then, you know,
25:54
when Pops comes home, he knows that we like fighting. We still got that energy, but you know, it's something about the
26:00
presence of a man in the house that's like, we going to add structure to this. It it doesn't necessarily change what
26:06
you have inside of you, but it it it kind of his presence put us in the, you know, put it in perspective
26:13
and in the right place, allowed us to channel it. So, it was like, all right, y'all going to karate, y'all doing this and that.
26:18
So, it was always with gloves. So, even now, I'm like, I don't want no bare knuckle fight. Last time I hit somebody
26:24
bare knuckle, my hand hurt. You know what I'm saying? That's real. People got people hard-headed out here.
26:30
You know, got your face cut up. Not now, man. You got the new album coming out. Oh, you don't want to have I don't need none of that. I already and
26:37
sometimes I will have a little minor little bruise just from the gloves and and you know my manager shaking his head
26:43
right now like this boy like but it for me it's you process so much and I'm one
26:48
of the owners of Broadway Boxing Gym you know and so we you know we looking to offici right now
26:55
we doing Saturday academy for you know what I'm saying for the youth we haven't fully opened up yet um but
27:02
it's you process so much it's so healthy to do you know Ultimately, people end up fighting
27:09
something. If you're not physically fighting, you fighting something inside. And you know, when you really exert
27:14
yourself that way, we're built to move around. We're made to be active. We're made to sweat. And when you do it in that setting that
27:20
way with somebody that's pushing you, you know, it's it's super healthy for your your mental health, too, you know.
27:27
And for me, it's a lot of pressure on like the things that I have on my plate, what I want to perform, like putting out
27:34
music, acting, and still wanting to be the person in my family that that I'm proud of, you know, let alone the other
27:40
people. Um, boxing is one of those that's a guilty pleasure, you know. Also, I mean,
27:45
I like peach cobbler, like I'm peach cobbler ice cream is okay.
27:50
That's a guilty pleasure, too, you know. So, um, and guacamole is a I don't know how
27:55
guilty it is, but I can No, that's good. That's healthy for you. I saw you cooking. Seven avocados worth of guacamole by myself.
28:01
God damn. I saw you cooking on I saw you making it on the gram. It is. It's It's quite excessive. Make
28:06
it Heather. Yeah, I saw him making it. I I wasn't sure if you were vegan, so that's why I asked. But he was really He
28:11
was doing a great job. He was cheffing on the gram. So, I love to cook like love love. And I
28:17
I watched you. I You knew what you were doing. Like it you did it the right way. I watch how you were peeling back
28:23
certain things. I I I I'm very impressed. Very impressed. I I challenge That's another challenge
28:28
I'm sending out to the world. A guac off. Anybody want to see me on making this guacamole?
28:34
I challenge you. A guac off. Guac off. I've won guac offs. Of course I do.
28:40
Okay, you heard the challenge. I'mma take it easy on Dol.
28:47
We in LA. We can feel it. We got PB right here. shying away from the fave.
28:52
That's what's happening. You got a special ingredient. Don't Don't bring Don't bring a cutting
28:57
board. I got I got versions and variations of guac. How you want it?
29:02
Oh my god. You want the roasted corn? You want the southwest guac? What you want?
29:08
You know what I'm saying? You said you're shying away from the guac fade. I've never even heard of a
29:13
guac fade. But I'm saying that's a new rap name. What you going to say? Hold everybody.
29:18
He He can pick his poison. It's up to him. Oh my gosh. I I feel We going to bring cutting
29:24
boards in here. What we going to do? You can bring whatever you want. Walk don't even require a stove. All we need to do is clear a little space.
29:31
When you want to do it, homie. When the album coming out? The album comes out August 26th.
29:36
That's not that. That's near. That's close. That's now. That's like Tuesday. That's Tuesday. Garage Series
29:43
day. Garage Series day. Yeah. Yeah. Are you going to the fight?
29:50
I'll be in Vegas. Um I haven't purchased my tickets yet. So, it's just a matter of what the roll out has me doing and all
29:56
that stuff. So, I want to go to the fight. We'll be broadcasting in Vegas that week. Add us to your roll out cuz Okay.
30:03
Because this will be after the album come out. Bring your Bring your Glock board. Hey, you ain't said nothing. I get a new
30:11
cutboard and a new night. Can we book a day that Wednesday, Thursday, Friday? Okay, let's do it.
30:17
The 10th, what is September 10th, 11th, and 12th at the Windort?
30:24
Hey, the guac fade is happening, man. The first annual guac fade with
30:30
D Smoking at the beat. Can't wait to be in jail. Put that in the calendar. Wow, man. Let's go.
30:36
Wow, man. That's the fun job. Yeah, man. You got somebody on the line right now, man. Her name is Leverne. Leverne, welcome to the show. Leverne,
30:42
what's up, Leverne? Good morning. Good morning. Good morning, Sam. Hey, hey, hey. What's up,
30:48
hey, hey, hey, hey. I got a couple things. So, so good vibes
30:55
guacamole garage series. Sound real good to me. I'm going to be in Vegas. I'm
31:01
going to be at the garage series. Got my reservations for Vegas already, so I'll see y'all at the win.
31:07
Okay, Smoke. Hey D Smoke, I just want to ask you one question. Tell me how you felt being at
31:14
the Morningside Picnic on Saturday. Was it a reunion or was that a reunion?
31:20
Oh, well, first and foremost, first and foremost, I felt like an intruder because I'm a Englewood High baby. You
31:27
know what I'm saying? But we had some friends that that you know had family up there at the Morningside picnic. So, I
31:33
walked in there. Uh me and my nephew, we we just wanted to yell out Englewood Sentinel, you know.
31:40
So, u now you can let everybody know that that's what we had on our heart. Oh, I know. We wasn't trying to get
31:47
chased out of there. It was too many of y'all. But, um it was beautiful to see. It was beautiful to see cuz from our
31:53
standpoint, like we just think we better than y'all. And to see I'm just saying I'm speaking candidly, but to see y'all
32:01
have so much Morningside Pride. I was like, "Oh, maybe they, you know, it's like if you grow up gang banging and
32:07
then all of a sudden you meet people that's like from the other side and and you see they happy and they laugh too and you like, man, I've been
32:12
brainwashed." Yeah. That's how it felt. Well, let me tell you, uh, I like being
32:18
monarchs. Yes. Yes. The way Mugs went to Morningside with me. We've been going to school since the
32:25
second grade. Mugs and I shout out. So, you know, we got a lot of history. Yes, for sure. For sure. But, you know,
32:31
just to have all the love and the camaraderie from Morningside and then you walk up in there as a sentinel.
32:37
Yeah, bro. But we love you. Hey. Hey. You know what? Some people was looking at me and it's still Inglewood
32:44
City love. I hope. You know what I'm saying? That's what got me out of there a lot. But my my dad also graduated from
32:51
Morningside. You know what I'm saying? So there's a family tie that that keeps the peace. But he got four sons that all went to
32:58
Englewood. Wow. Wow. That's crazy. Hey Leavine, I even know I didn't even know Mugs had a
33:03
childhood. It seemed like he was just born as an adult. You know what? You know what?
33:08
Mug's about to call up. I don't want to bring I don't want to bring Mugs into this, but Mugs was a
33:13
bully to me in the second grade and I love him.
33:19
He said, "You can't beat him. Join him." like he my friend too. Join him. That's my boy
33:26
bully to me as an adult so I don't let him know. All right, Lever, thanks for your call.
33:32
Guys, I cancel my meeting this morning for this call. So, I'm headed to the office. I love y'all. Peace,
33:37
guys. Have a beautiful day, man. Oh, man. See you in Vegas. Smoke is here. Uh we're talking about his new
33:44
project. You got an interesting name for your album. It's called Wake Up Super,
33:49
right? And I first want to say uh my love and strength to your family. Thank
33:55
you. Uh it's been reported you lost your mom. Absolutely. And and if it's okay, man, can you share what made her special
34:01
because she she raised an amazing family, bro. If that's okay.
34:07
It would be it would be easier for me to try to share her flaws than all the
34:13
things that made her special. Like, wow, man. That list is long. Okay. Um,
34:19
let's I'll start with her talent. My mom was uh a vocalist, a writer, uh a
34:27
professional musician and a teacher. She sang with from Michael Jackson to Tina
34:32
Turner to Whitney Houston to uh Shaka Khan. Wrote gospel songs that were
34:39
recorded by you know CC Wins and went all the way around the world and and all
34:45
of this most of this happened after she became a mother. She was a young mother. So she she became a mother at 22 having
34:52
DaVon and then me a year later and then sir a year later you know all to the same father. um my
34:58
dad Ron and um and the the most incredible thing is that you hear so
35:04
many stories about people who shine in a public eye but in their family it's just tumultuous or it's just problematic and
35:11
and that wasn't her. She was um very present. um she had a quality that I
35:16
think true stars have and that's despite how much success they achieve. Um when
35:24
they're with you, they make you feel like there's nothing else happening and it's just you. And um
35:31
so she when I like even even when we did her homegoing memorial um just to hear
35:40
how other people talked about her was just like wow. Yeah. like I thought you was just mine
35:45
the way you showed up for me, you know, but you you really found a way to impact
35:51
everybody and she was a true minister of music, you know, at at this church that
35:56
I grew up in called Bible Enrichment, you know, Pastor Beverly Bam Crawford. And um and I remember as a kid seeing
36:05
her sing in front of people and being like like, "Wow, that's that's my mom. I go home to her." But watching her here,
36:13
I'm just blown away. And it was she was she was just one of the most honest people I knew. Like she would always
36:19
lead with her testimony which was, you know, in the 80s she was, you know, on
36:24
drugs. She battled with cocaine. And the day she had me, actually that morning
36:29
she smoked and was terrified that they were going to find drugs in her system or my system and take take me from her.
36:37
And you know, her testimony is also that, you know, God would have it that they didn't they the test came back
36:43
clean on both our end. Wow. And you know, she got her baby back and and we went home and and so um and her
36:51
her ministry is how she fought her way out of addiction. She was eight months sober when she got a job as a minister
36:57
of music. And so she was like the level of sincerity that you get when somebody's literally fighting for their
37:02
life and trying to be the mother that they want to be, you know, um it was just something powerful to watch. And so
37:09
um I I don't know even what to say. Like like she was funny, you know what I'm
37:15
saying? She had a sense of humor. When we became teenagers, she put the belt to the side and starting us in the chest like she was a
37:21
G. You know what I'm saying? Like and um your first phase, huh? first. No, not the first one. But, you know, them
37:28
wasn't even fazed. Them was one-sided. You know what I'm saying? We just getting sucked up, you know.
37:33
But, um, it was just just a incredible human being. And it is, uh,
37:38
it was what I the part that we haven't figured out is is why, but that's not
37:44
ours to answer, you know? And her accident happened on the way to church.
37:50
You know what I'm saying? So that that part is like how how we add that up, you know. But again, if I if I spend
37:57
time trying to figure that out, I'll just be spinning my wheels, you know. Yeah. The the truth is um accident that
38:03
could have killed her. she was heavily injured and then we got like four more months with her, you know, doing our
38:09
best to take care of her and and um and help her recover, you know, but things
38:15
will turn out that, you know, she succumbed to her injuries ultimately and and we're we're now like, you know, she
38:23
has since, you know, or or sir has since had another baby. Yeah. You know, so
38:28
my mom didn't get to meet Danielle, you know, sir's uh daughter, newest daughter. Um, she loved and adored
38:36
Kalia, his first daughter. So, it was just I mean I could talk about Jackie forever. She's Thank you.
38:41
incredible. Thank you for sharing. Can you say her full name three times? Jackie Guushe Ferris.
38:47
Jackie Guushe Ferris. Jackie Gu. Wait, Jackie Ivet Guushe
38:53
Ferris Ferris. Okay, man. Round of applause, man. Let's celebrate her legacy living on through her amazing children, right,
39:00
HV? Oh, absolutely. And uh Dm Smoke, thank you. You to piggy back off this way. Thank you for sharing. Unfortunately,
39:06
I'm in that club as well, man. And um and ended up losing my father 18 months after my mom. And I'm still stuck
39:14
though on the song Frequency. And I'm wondering for you um because I still struggle um from time to time. How did
39:22
you or how do you for anybody that's listening that you can help possibly help, how did you tap into a higher
39:29
level of frequency to keep going? because I I felt like for me at there
39:34
was points I was experiencing paralysis like just don't want to do anything and
39:39
then there was a an extreme um amount of time where I was just angry
39:44
and I think that why you touched on it so perfectly that why was bothering me and then I started to second guess if
39:50
it's something I could have possibly done um that part that part you know um but how did you at
39:56
some point find a way you know just to help me and maybe somebody's listening to tap into a
40:02
higher frequency because you could stay mad for so long and and paralyzed for so long that you
40:08
don't find that other frequency, right? It's a balance between like
40:13
giving yourself space to be mad and process all those different phases of grief and then also giving yourself a
40:20
time limit like all right, we're gonna be mad, but we ain't gonna stay mad. You know what I'm saying? What's your what's a reasonable amount of time? like I I
40:28
shed some tears yesterday, you know. Yep. And so, but when I was done, it was like, "All right, let's go." You know,
40:34
and because you're not honoring somebody by not moving forward. You're actually
40:40
doing the opposite, you know? And so, and me personally, like she taught me
40:45
how to play the piano. She taught us how to perform. She taught us how to be poised and and stand up and be proud of
40:52
what you are presenting, you know? She taught us how to be humble while being gangsters and beasts at what we do. And
41:01
um so to pull back is is not honoring that person's legacy, you know. Um but
41:07
part of what, you know, part of what I do is just give myself time and space to
41:13
um to process, you know, give myself time and space in between as much stuff as
41:19
possible. You know what I'm saying? Sometimes I'll just, you know, if I got if I got five minutes, I'll lay on the
41:26
floor and play with my dog. Like, you know what I'm saying? Just like just moments and being fully in those
41:32
moments. You know, I hug people longer. You know what I'm saying? Like, um,
41:37
like I try and I'm, you know, I'm a thug, but I try to be like her.
41:44
You know what I'm saying? Like, all right, she's so ingrained in who I am. It's like how she made me feel. I want
41:51
to make so many people feel like that, you know, you know. And so I'm like, how
41:57
I feel when she gone? And it's a weird thing, but who who do I want to feel like that when I'm gone? Like
42:03
cuz it just all it is is a reflection of their impact. I'm actually fortunate to hurt this much because it means that she
42:10
meant that much. If I didn't hurt, it would mean that I've never had nobody good in my life.
42:16
So it's just I'm you got to in the same breath be grateful like there are people
42:22
who have problematic relationships with their family. That's not you know for the most part my
42:29
story. You know it's family. Everybody got that member where it's like hey I love you dog. You stay over there a trip.
42:35
You a problem. You a problem man. But but so I I try to I try to love on the
42:42
younger members of my family. Yeah. in the way that she did us. You know, it's it's hard to I let adults be
42:49
adults like, "Hey man, I love you big cuss, but you know, you on your own." If if they hear this, they going to be
42:55
like, "Oh, that's why." Okay. I got We want to borrow that drama, man. Man, this is amazing. Thank you. And
43:03
what's beautiful is she she got to be there and witness all of y'all success. All of we had we had Stevie Wonder at
43:10
her 60th birthday party. she been in the studio with her favorite artist and them
43:15
going back and forth playing songs for each other and her singing for him and you know so and then him you know
43:21
blessing the memorial and Stevie had a moment where he was like you know hey
43:27
Jack like at the memorial in the mic like Jackie if you see my mom tell I said hello we was all like oh goodness like bro
43:34
like and he he broke with his voice cracking and I'm like and and that's the thing
43:40
you said you part of the club you you. It's it it's raised my awareness like
43:46
actually despite it being an accident, despite it being something unexpected, it is more it is one of the natural
43:53
things in life to see a parent go. You know what I'm saying? We don't want it to happen early. E early sucks,
44:00
but it's far more natural than a parent losing a child. And I feel for people who have to experience that,
44:06
you know, but it makes you aware of how many people do are going through that
44:11
and what people are carrying every day. Yes. Snoop, you know, Half Dead. I was in the
44:17
studio with them press and play. They was like, "Bro, we both part of the and they and then told me the stories." And
44:22
it's not just I'm in that club. It's a whole history of what they had to walk through
44:27
Yes. and out of and still carry. It's a whole It's like backpacking through Europe.
44:33
Yeah. For the rest of your life. You never let that down, but you just get stronger.
44:39
Wow, man. Man, thank man. Deep smoke here, man. Give this man a round of applause. Hey, man. The questions you asking, they
44:45
going to be calling me. They going to be calling me deep smoke. Deep smoke on the Oh [Â __Â ] get ready.
44:52
You about to say something. Nah, but it's necessary though. Like, it's necessary. People needed to hear it today, including myself. So, thank you.
44:58
So that gives a different meaning to the album title, Wake Up Super. Wake up Super.
45:04
Break that down. Wake up Super. Wake up Super. Uh, wake up Super is an
45:10
awakening for myself, gangsters, and lovers.
45:16
So, it's um it's it's a journey through like first we go to Inglewood. It's it's
45:22
the the unconsciousness of coming up in Englewood. So, we I do talk my [Â __Â ] you
45:27
know? It's not just like everybody hold your head high and meditate. You know what I'm saying? It ain't we start off.
45:34
You can't wake up if you wasn't sleep. You know what I'm saying? And I don't, you know, I don't take for granted that
45:41
it's people in Englewood that have a very different existence than I do till this day. And some of them like that's
45:47
why I still go to the city because it's like I want to speak from a place that people really experience. And and so it's still
45:54
the G's in Englewood. still, you know, people trying to escape that lower
46:00
vibration and people embracing it too, you know. And so the first couple songs, um, you
46:07
know, I talk my [Â __Â ] more. The beats is going crazy. We nah nah nah, we tell these stories and then, um, as we go
46:14
into the middle, you know, we we get into the higher frequency and all this. And then by the end, it gets very, uh,
46:21
personal. you know, we start to talk about Jackie very specifically and and
46:26
the final song is one of her favorite songs and that's featuring me, uh, PJ Morton and Tiffany Guushe,
