0:00
I shine you shine I shine you shine yeah I shine a God there is a God there is
0:09
yes God there is yes I told these young men have to be I say young men cuz they ain't aged in 30 years look at man none
0:16
of us we have we I'm keeping my black claim it we we
0:24
do it right by ourselves we do it all right [ __ ] yes
0:30
man wow look at us you better love this brown yo hip hop world look at
0:36
us 30 plus years in the game look at us yes can you dig it 30 plus can you dig
0:46
it [ __ ] I love it I like it we got Pete Rock Grammy nominated for the new album
0:52
Auditorium one cool we got Comm Grammy nominated for the new album auditorial
0:57
one this ain't the first time they been there it ain't the second time either come on man that's crazy what does that
1:05
feel like y'all y'all didn't even y'all didn't even aim for a Grammy when y'all got together to do this project you know what we was just working on the music
1:11
saying yo this is going to be hot you know what I'm saying we didn't we didn't know that people will receive it the way
1:17
they do it the way they did yeah and to be here in this position and to feel this feeling is is absolutely
1:25
astronomical there's nothing like a lot of folks we we like to compare our Jo with our past Joys like what does this
1:32
feel like does it feel like the first album does it feel like the second this is different though right
1:38
this is new and individual unique in his own right yeah that's why like when when y'all just said they've been there
1:44
before man it's it's it's still it's a unique feeling man I haven't been there with Pete Rock I haven't been there I
1:51
haven't like like and just and just the spirit and twoo man like you don't know if you'll ever be there again you don't
1:58
know like at the end of the day you you know I be I sometimes I have to remind myself to dream still like I got to keep
2:04
dreaming like cuz you know after decades in in doing what we do it's like you got
2:10
to remind yourself the of the love that you have for this cuz it's so much stuff we deal with yeah so man I ain't GNA
2:17
front hearing we was Grammy nominated bro I mean I almost just I did like just
2:22
was overwhelmed and man I called Pete and just was like man I can't believe this man excited I was excited dude man
2:29
we we like he just said to me earlier man I still don't believe this is incredible but Pete is this your first n
2:36
this no no right but for me for Pete Rock with someone else yes right right
2:43
right right very first wow how many y'all get three yeah three this my third
2:48
well second for this album for this we've been nominated for two for this album best rap performance and and best
2:55
rap album oh man get him a round of applause yo you just said something so real and it a lot of times when people
3:03
see you one way they see you as an artist or they see you as a celebrity we don't see each you people human beings
3:10
human beings so this what common said is applicable to anybody's life you got to
3:16
remind yourself to dream right and even if you ain't in front of a camera on a
3:22
big screen or on a microphone like we do every day cuz it seem like we live in a dream right right you could be working
3:29
in office building Warehouse entrepreneur you got to remind yourself
3:35
to keep dreaming right man that's man that's what got that's why we here together right now we started all
3:40
started somewhere we started come on man like think about that like from where we come from from New York Chicago Oakland
3:47
like we was dreaming about something and and man that's one of the things I'd be wanting more than anything for our
3:52
youngest is to find their their dream like ca because nobody can take your dream away from you and even and like
4:00
like 30 years into the game I've been through ups and downs I I've released music that people don't even know is out
4:05
but it feels great to release some music with Pete Rock and people know it's out and [Music]
4:10
it's somebody heard it somebody heard it and then but but I'm saying I'm still
4:15
dreaming though like I'm like man this is this is this is like one of those things where you like I feel the
4:21
excitement you know I don't like you said swear I don't even I don't try to compare my excitements to like man when
4:26
my first album came out I felt this excitement I felt those things I got to be present with what that was but right
4:32
now in this present feeling I'm like just grateful and thinking like man man
4:37
we just put our hearts and souls into something and nobody would have thought that Pete Rock and common at this point
4:44
30 years into our career could do something that feels fresh and new and we in categories with freaking Kendrick
4:51
and jcole that part yo that
4:56
be you in a category with do is crazy I mean that's some heavyweight
5:03
stuff that's that's the newest sensation so you part of the New Movement as well as the classic movement and every
5:09
movement in between yes that's important to see and then the dichotomy because
5:15
you you coming off of the um the Hall of Fame tribute yes yes to Tri Quest this
5:21
is why the work is important man this is why it's important and it's passionate for you to love what you do yeah because
5:27
had you stopped you couldn't have been on that Hall of Fame stage brother that Hall of Fame stage I said man I was I
5:35
looked back at rehearsal and I looked and I was like I just saw A Tribe Called Quest Rock and Roll Hall of Fame I
5:41
looked over and saw pasta news and Macio and I said man I'm up here with these
5:46
people who that mean something who made me really want to rap like like be something like man it was people
5:53
Muhammad Ali Dr King myangelo deas so you know like it's like no like it's
6:01
just so so to be on that stage and getting to do like all that and just seeing us celebrate a tribe it just made
6:07
it just made me be like man we are really elevating and and progressing with hip-hop because along with the 30
6:15
years I say this and I said this before but man I ain't think when I was 20 years old I used to think like man what
6:21
I'm going to be doing when in my 30s like I can't rap in my 30s I used to feel like you old like God
6:30
that out the window but I but Hip Hop was kind of young and we just looked at like we was in our 20s early 20s and
6:37
just didn't I just didn't know that I could be rapping in my 30s now I'm 52 yeah bro that's amazing man you don't 52
6:46
yeah man you edgy man you you on a on a cff I want to talk about I want to say
6:51
I'm not sure if it was Jermaine the PRI or somebody in the R&B field said um
6:57
that we all grew up in the church but with kind of losing connection with it in our music they made a I'm
7:03
paraphrasing but I just played that song God there is right that's off the auditorium one project I want to talk
7:10
about that a little bit you know um common you've been very open about your faith you did something really
7:16
interesting recently with um Jay Huds back on tour give a big round of applause Jennifer hson back on tour
7:23
Jennifer hson The Voice shout out to her the voice Big Love yeah and you came out
7:30
with a bouquet of flowers yes yes and you leted her prayer yeah yeah man I
7:35
mean did she know you were going to do that or did well they they asked she asked me to to to say the prayer um and
7:42
man I just feel it's always important to to call God's presence into whatever we doing like um and acknowledge God's
7:50
presence you know and that could be whatever Faith cuz you know sway like I grew up going to Trinity United Church
7:57
of Christ when my pastor was unapologetically black and unashamedly Christian Reverend Jeremiah wri but he
8:03
brought minister farakhan in to speak he brought so I was learning about God in my way and got to find God for myself
8:11
but you know it was good to have that foundation and and um you know something Pete said about just bringing it back to
8:17
the music he he said this the other day and it just man it rung in my heart because he was like man when me and KH
8:23
hooked up and we was first listening to the music I felt like God was in the room with us and U I think that's you
8:30
know for me that's what this is about and once you get to a certain point um
8:35
in life you understand man we got higher purpose and we just doing our best to channel the gods that's in us as as
8:42
women men like um what you know we just trying to channel God and recognize the God and each other so I just did that
8:48
prayer and you know and make sure we we bring God's presence into to that performance into whatever we were doing
8:55
I love it man um I want to I'll be remiss if I didn't say rest and peace to F and true Joy um
9:02
um yeah man for that that performance and man damn K I almost want you to say
9:08
a prayer for us but I'm I'm keep moving man see man I love you brother I love you brother Pete I was thinking about
9:15
Heavy D MH uh recently and and we're we're celebrating we got our own thing
9:20
was released in 1989 wow yeah my brother was in that video dancing and choreographer doing
9:27
all of that right and so weal 35 years ago right and this man went on to make
9:34
uh we just got off tour when we did that we went straight from tour right to the set to do that video really yeah yeah
9:42
man that was no joke what what do you what was have work what what can you share was crazy it was crazy SM yeah I
9:49
mean we took breaks but we barely he loved working and I I didn't mind cuz I liked it too m i mean we used to you
9:57
know pause spend the night in the studio and be there all night you know until
10:02
the morning and they had a little shower in soundtrack Studios mhm you know a shower a shower a full
10:09
shower I'm like all right cool they got that I'm I'm good we could do that you know and stay the whole night and keep
10:15
working until we get tired wow and that's how we did it heavy day in the boys that miss the big stuff salutations
10:24
that fun those days was fun he's fun to be around uh-huh he's so fun to be
10:30
around you know like that's it like you just fall in love with the atmosphere that he creates yeah when you talk about
10:38
the atmosphere first of all rest of power The Heavy D I just want to make sure so yes sir any any any songs Never
10:46
released from eie that you would have yeah I mean that I would have I would have to look and see I don't even know
10:52
what I got no more okay all right I got a lot though but you know it's like but it's some unreleased joints um I got to
10:59
ask y'all about the environment right now the women seem to be on top right would you agree with that I'm cool with
11:05
that didn't the culture need this man look what we did women put up with a lot
11:12
of stuff yeah to and from men and from you know we we the black women is the
11:18
easiest woman to put down on social media it seem like we can't help do that you know it's time to pick them up man
11:24
right and and and and the sisters have like the in society have the the biggest
11:29
challenge being a woman and being black um but man they've overcome through
11:35
through through it all and always prevailed and it's like seeing women like in leadership spaces seeing them
11:43
prevailing in in music seeing them like running things it's like it's so necessary because I think sometimes as
11:50
men we have so many wars and Egos and just going BL that you know that that
11:56
the um the spirit and the Heart of a woman in that femin feminism is like
12:01
really necessary yeah it's it's it's potent and and I'm glad we got it in hip-hop the way it is um like as you
12:08
said DOI and like a lot of these young young artist are like
12:13
rapity lights hip hop you know like the new you know yeah who would you work with Pete
12:20
like you got to get them in the studio all of them I was in don't you could get a p Rock be checking out her tiny desk and I was just like wow spectacular you
12:29
I saw her performance on uh on coed I was like yo this is creativity she could
12:34
rap she could sing she could do it all yeah and I and she app she's appreciative because you know she this
12:41
isn't overnight obviously um and then I I I'm sure she could sense the
12:47
excitement that's coming from people like us that have been around for decades we we got a different
12:53
sensibility of when we recognize a light you know you know oh you know it's like oh [ __ ] exactly GOI we've seen this we
13:02
seen this we know what this is give me that energy all day exciting it also makes me wonder um because when it comes
13:09
to male peers you can think of it as like friendly competition yeah as a male
13:15
hip-hop artist can you see a female hip-hop artist as friendly competition or does it feel like completely separate
13:23
I feel like it's still competition when it comes to mcing like like you know like like we we getting in in on that
13:30
song together we getting in that Cipher together yo we all trying to just be the dopest you know that's just what it is
13:36
so so I mean and and that's what I love about this sport about you know hip-hop in itself CU always for me Lauren Hill
13:44
is one of the greatest MC's too like that's just what it is like so I I think you know I if I get into the cipher and
13:51
a woman is lighting it up I'm going be like I got to light it up you going to try to take her down
13:57
huh you know but back but back then to Tracy's to your point though Trace like
14:03
it would just be a cipher like you couldn't tell you didn't know if you went to the boys club the YMCA whever
14:08
was on the Block whatever if you rying just get in you couldn't separate the girls rhyme over here the guys look
14:14
who's talking one of the other greatest MCS ever pick up a p
14:23
the can she do a feature on Auditorium too
14:29
is legendary I would first of all I would do anything for common and Pete Rock y'all already know that my family
14:34
but you always doing work I'm her
14:41
manager yeah damager for sure it was never separate though Trace
14:46
that's what I mean like if it was something going on you just got in if you got ROMs go ROMs like you know so
14:52
that's kind of like how but I I will agree the females if she was nice she stood out you know she definitely stood
14:58
out for sure we got Bas on the line from ATL B go ahead real how can you go B go
15:04
for it man can you base b b b b boses
15:13
boses boses oh okay I'm a first listen I'm a first time caller hold up got
15:22
you welcome to the tribe all right what's your question real quick BOS Vos
15:28
my question is nothing except for how does Comm stay looking so young and when these guys came to
15:35
Atlanta look man if y'all want to see a show and I'm sure y'all have already seen the
15:41
show common and Pete Rock it that was the best show I've ever
15:46
seen in I'm talking about from comedy shows to live shows concerts wow lady
15:53
off stage and and rap to her like he was talking to her man I just looked at with
15:58
my homeboy said man how's he been doing this for 40 something 30 something years crazy damn
16:05
it's real life lifing on stage it's lifing right and so like with common
16:11
like I've grown up with common and I'm different I'm a Pakistani American okay and listening to Common growing up it
16:19
was like an enthusiasm right you always had common the elf halflife and then I I
16:24
found out about Pete with the Reminisce over you and so these were guidelines for me to grow up with Wow and growing
16:32
up Pakistani in American society in the 9s was rough wow so if you didn't have
16:38
this kind of music to kind of get you through it I'm talking about even when when n Champa came out and I was a little bit older I was
16:45
like I know how to holler at the women now helping me with that know so it was
16:51
it was it was cultural it was enlightening it was gross and now with
16:57
this new album like my son he's in seventh grade 12 years old listening to this stuff and I'm sorry I keep rambling
17:03
but man it's just it's inspirational and it's just great that y'all are making this music still at this at this age and
17:11
and I feel like I'm growing up with y'all but really not growing you know I feel young just like you guys do and
17:17
it's it's it's amazing wow man thank you we're not 90 years old now put a lot on it still we still
17:25
pretty young there buddy start the longer he talk the sore I got yo man I got to say like that I
17:33
ain't going to front like when you start hearing people from like Pakistan or from different like countries that you
17:39
you never been to and they relate to to your music you be like damn I ain't know
17:44
that this could touch that like and the fact that he like man he listening to the music with his son that's what when
17:50
when people told me that about the auditorium that kind of gave me that feeling like wow I I haven't had this I
17:56
I don't know if in my life cuzz even when I came out with joints that was like b or whatever that was like I was
18:02
in my 30s so people weren't listening to it with their kids but now somebody telling me yo I'm listen to the
18:08
auditorium and my my daughter like it I'm like damn man I ain't know them listen to your older stuff
18:14
too and see the consistency extending our careers long as y'all H we got a job so stay out there keep working keep
18:21
working Pete and com keep pushing us man keep pushing us I got you man we were talking about um the power of women in
18:29
our community and man we were so fortunate we got to interview the great the now late great Nikki
18:36
Giovani oh man bro give her a big round of applause man she came up to this show twice did she yep she was here man we
18:45
going to play back her interview later on after we talk with you guys but can you talk about her influence yes I have
18:51
her records actually I have wow so I learned from that aspect y I don't know
18:57
about you y for me that that is she is one of the main writers why I'm writing
19:02
now amen so so God bless her soul like literally I just would sit and read her
19:07
work and and just you know this was when I was in grammar school like fifth grade and it made me like be like man I could
19:15
start seeing the world in a different way and seeing myself in a different way and I I specifically remember Nicki
19:21
Giovani that name s name is so fly that
19:26
name is Super Fly word G so super and even like super dope mid 90s I was
19:32
definitely when I would get stuck I would go read like some Nicki G some James B it just it was just open like my
19:40
mind up cuz that writing would make you remember like what you could do with words and it would it it would take the
19:46
limit off cuz sometimes yeah when you writing you're like okay how far but
19:53
poetry what Nicki Giovani does I don't just want to just put her just like with everybody because she is special yeah
19:59
and reading that would be like oh I can do anything with these words man yeah so
20:04
yeah rest and power n Play Back r k what kind of mood you in man you just got me
20:10
inspired to throw some words at you and see if you make a we get to I mean you a
20:15
in the mood you can tell me man I mean I'm happy here talking with y'all but if you want me to ride I'm
20:23
ride always putting people to work yo it's too much that was the most amazing
20:28
response though too early I'm tired I'm happy to
20:35
be talking with you though MC and a gentlemen I was up at 5: a.m. got to do ready for let do it let's do it you
20:42
surec see that psychology always always always yo this
20:50
dude man this is you know what it is this is uh our really uh this week we're wrapping up right and so I don't know
20:58
know who's going to be on the show later this week right but I know I got you now yeah you better do one nice Christmas
21:06
freestyle some words you know I'm going to make it around our community okay all
21:11

22:04
to learning I'm concerning when it come to this yo I get to burning with the style this is how it be with no drama no
22:10

22:16

22:23
I'm never hesitant I come to Sway in the Morning brainstorming think about women and things keep forming when it come to
22:30
this show I show them lots of loving so I gave lots of loving to Jennifer Hudson yeah it's like that yo had to make the
22:37
choice from Chicago yo swear say she's the voice she's the voice when it come this I read my Bible I seen her back in
22:44
on American Idol and this is like this yo I seen The mean world I said to Jennifer yo she's the dream girl but let
22:51
me get off it they might be thinking soft [ __ ] but when it come to the show I guess I had to cough it up when it goes
22:57

23:06

23:12

them on the show exactly right and we went over they they did a interpolation of what the words would be
28:20
like uh audio and they switched up where Lauren Hill plays Cyrus womens yeah
28:28
switch up where the Warriors are now women instead of men and Isa Davis on the project too that's right Isa Davis

wanted to ask uh what's been the one of the greatest feedback you've got on your album from your peers in Hip
30:34
Hop good question it's hard one that's hard from your PE though yeah um um
30:40
great things I I'll say like early on I I sent the music to Quest love because I
30:46
was um wanting him to help like just give his input I wanted his input on some things and like sequencing because
30:53
he's really good at that and um he listened to the album was like man I
30:58
love you and Peete but I didn't know y'all was going to do something at this level and he and the biggest compliment
31:03
was like he was like this is for surely one of your top three albums that you ever done and for me that means a lot
31:10
because when people like know your catalog that mean they've heard and been attached to certain music and for them
31:17
for you to release something new and them to be like yo this is one of your best and this is one of y'all best like
31:23
for me it was like when he told me I went back to the Joint board after I heard this this this that's what that
31:29
was a compliment yeah you made Quest go back to the drawing board he like yo I'm going back to the

32:10
the LA Convention Center yeah and uh Janome Monet open for you and you had
32:16
like a black puffy vest thing on or whatever but what I took from your performance which they with me and made
32:22
me the great performer that I am today the layers wow wow like you have you
32:28
started with a lot of layers and as you did a song you took something off and
32:33
you took something off and you kept the show new and interesting and engaging the entire time and that was just that
32:40
was a huge thing that probably carried me early on when people were like who's this girl like females aren't you know
32:47
it was like I already got a lot of what she gonna do and I knew how to perform
32:53
well and that would get the crowd and that what that's what carried me through a lot of in my like live performance and
32:59
booked me for so many shows and stuff so thank you I appreciate you thank you man it could be inspiration appreciate that
33:07
give him some commission to to be that also was a starting that's
33:13
