0:00
This man ain't up here for much more else other than bars
0:04
You already know. Come on. The way I found out about this MC, I was at my nephew's basketball, my niece's basketball
0:13
game, Little Talia, King Tex Darcy. Shout out to Talia. Dang. In the valley during family time, just uncle flying into town, surprising the knees
0:21
Doing what you do. That's what I do. And the whole game, I'm getting hit by Ice-T
0:28
The legend? The legend. The iced tea is just... Shout out to Ice
0:31
He tuned in with the spitters. Ice tea tuned in. Yeah, man. That's freeway right there
0:36
Yeah, for sure. But isn't he? Bro, you just bought... Yo, your baby mom ate so many rappers, she should battle on Smack
0:43
Come on, bro. Come on, Slate. I'm gonna free you already. Come on, man
0:48
We got the one and only Merkums is back. Give it up for Merkums. They like that
0:52
That wasn't your last line, man. When do you come up with lines
0:57
Do you... Any time of the day? or you got to sit down and focus? You know what
1:01
Any time of the day, man. Any time of the day, I think of some shit. I mean, I put it to the side
1:06
Like, all right, all right. And then when it's time to sit down and focus
1:10
new ones be coming. I mean, new ones be coming and then I just mix them with the ones
1:14
that I, I mean, thought of last week, last month. And I mean, put it all together
1:19
Preparation. That's interesting because, yeah, I was going to lead to that. We had Jazzo here yesterday
1:23
Okay. And Jazzo pulled out his phone and started to talk, just gave one or two liners that he just wrote one liners and shared some
1:32
But then I just heard Free say, I never write. Yeah. So how do you get to that stage
1:38
I'm just, did you always have that? I never write. Yeah, before I even got to Rockefeller, I wasn't writing
1:43
And then being around like Jay and, you know, Beans, nobody wrote
1:48
So, you know, it just came natural. But I do like what you say, how you drop stuff to the side
1:53
I got hits in my voice notes. Like I might Any time of the day I might come up with something
1:57
And I'll just put it In my voice notes And then I might go back To that And blend it
2:00
And build off of that Nah that's fire For sure I do it with melodies too Like if I come up
2:05
With a melody Or some type of cadence Or something I'll mumble the cadence
2:08
In my voice memo Okay And I mean Come back to it So it's some sort
2:13
Of documentation Somewhere It's just not the full thing Right right Got it Okay
2:17
You don't know Where it's going Unless your memory Crazy Like Jay
2:21
Like his memory Crazy I distinctively remember him saying like he would save lines in his head and then pause and then go back to him
2:28
like you know got it so that's like the another level different level yeah he would say the lines
2:33
and save them save them save them in his memory file them yeah put them in a file exactly while
2:41
running new york like you know i'm saying so that's crazy that's another level a little
2:45
mental compartment yeah yeah did you ever did you approach songs differently at one point
2:53
Was it about the song or about the impact? Like, in other words, I'm going to jump on this track because so-and-so
3:01
just Blaze made it, and it's going to get on the radio. So I need to come up with lyrics that's more radio-friendly
3:07
I never aimed for nothing radio. Like, I just created the music that felt good to me
3:13
and I record the beats that make me want to rap to them. You know what I'm saying
3:17
That's why we got the project The Beat Made Me Do It. Then we got The Beat Made Me Do It, too. That's almost done
3:22
I'm going to need to get you on there, too, bro. You want to get Merkle's on your project? Let's get it, Merkle
3:26
Let's get it. You see how this shit works right here. You're out of applause. Man, your freestyle better be fire, Merkle
3:30
I hope you're ready. Shit, I know you ain't know you was coming for an audition
3:34
Yeah, boy. Well, you know, you're an independent artist now, right? Yeah, yeah, yeah
3:38
You got a project. Talk about it. Yep, yep. My last project is called Greatest Flow on Earth
3:43
You know what I mean? It's just 10 joints. Really, I'm borrowing out
3:47
Like, a lot of people was asking for it. They was like, yo, these, like, I'll be hitting these radio freestyles and stuff like that
3:53
that it was like yo we trying to bump these so i did like it's pretty much 10 10 tracks almost like
3:58
almost like an old mixtape or something like that but something you could put on apple music spotify and all that give you that give you that feel but for the people today know what i mean and
4:07
um it's like a new thing it's almost like a new concept for some people that's dope too because
4:12
like when i um when i first came out i only had one 900 hustler that was like the only record i
4:17
had so i think it was like dj duop or something i came to new york and i did like three freestyles
4:23
with them like to like Beans and Bleak Beats to one JB like the best
4:27
of me and people was like bumping it as a tape so then that added to my
4:31
show like I would do the three or four freestyles then I do one I'm
4:34
and I was getting like $2,500 a show in the beginning early Can I just give you some respect
4:40
sit here please You want Freeway to sit next to Markle? Yeah he was gonna spit
4:47
but please let me be my honor But honestly had the J1 been trying to sit next to you the whole
4:51
the whole interview so He's an all-glocks-down fan And my type of
4:55
If heads only knew about the rap game Oh, that's yours Okay, my bad Okay
4:59
Maybe you can get her in the studio Nah, DJ Premier made me put that record out
5:03
Shout out to Primo He made me release that one as a single So thank you Bagger
5:07
What a stunt right there Right, everybody? DJ Premier made me put that out
5:13
You know, Primo Primo So for you in this day and age
5:18
Is, you know, the resources change The way you get notoriety Has changed
5:22
So the freestyle Is still important Right Right Doing the freestyle Going on the radar
5:29
Going to Just Incredible Coming up here Bars Bars R95 That's still important
5:36
For independent artists Nah that's for sure How important Um I I don't know how
5:43
Everybody thinks But for me It's extremely important Because it's like You know what I mean
5:46
Before getting into it I was a fan of it Like a die hard fan of it
5:50
So you know what I mean And now now I'm a part of it. You know, for some artists, it probably won't be important
5:55
But but what is important is hitting these hitting these platforms, not so much the freestyle, but going on these platforms, because some people do like there's some rappers that just do auto tune and stuff like that
6:04
But they still go into these platforms, whether it's a hanging mic on the radar or this or that
6:10
So, yeah, the platforms is important. But how people going about it varies and how people goes about it varies. Right
6:18
What has worked for you? And I'm talking to you so that other independent artists who are in this space right now kind of can get an idea of what other independent artists go through
6:27
What has worked for you in terms of getting your visibility and getting your recognition
6:32
And what doesn't seem to work? Okay, so let me see. What works for me is, I mean, just really being adamant on the Internet
6:43
popping out, like going places and just like a lot of the time
6:49
just like rapping for people and like just seeing people out in the street and rapping for them
6:53
and like, I don't know, those little, and it could just be 10 seconds, 15 seconds
6:58
if I'm shorter, even better probably. These little clips is just like
7:01
it just raise awareness and it's the craziest thing, like two to four bars
7:06
That's it. Like in this era, like what's going on right now, if I got like a 15 second video or like Like I just I was outside the BET Awards two weeks ago and ll cool j was there i was like yo l let me spit you a 16 he was like make it eight
7:21
so i did i gave him eight bars and the whole video was probably like 27 seconds
7:29
and um it's also like it happened the other week it's not like 75 000 views everybody's comment
7:34
yeah yeah like those things they just impactful most definitely right that's what Jermaine Dupree
7:40
was talking about too recently it's like a combination of a little bit of rapping
7:44
and seeing somebody with some notoriety next to you like you know what I mean like all of that helps
7:50
like if I just do a little bit of rapping it'll go so far but that little bit of rapping with LL
7:54
right there is it's like you know we should do I'm right here and I'm trying to hear it
7:58
that's what I'm trying to say you see my setup you see what just happened
8:03
That's why Good luck Queen You the best Okay You a genius at work
8:08
She was like Hey man She's so big And what you Before you get started
8:12
What you doing With the mixtapes Stuff is very important Cause I'm from the era
8:16
Where like The first time We really heard Like the Knox Lox and Kim
8:20
And Nori go crazy Was on the Clue tape Fast We don't have
8:24
That no more Like you know what I'm saying So Speaking of Clue I just did Clue
8:28
Two days ago Shout out to Clue Shout out to Clue Another one Y'all don't do this
8:32
Let's go That means a lot That clue stepped off of you
8:39
It was crazy At the end of the freestyle He said clue manada
8:46
He said that He didn't say it he pressed the button And the machine said it
8:52
But I was just like yeah that's a stamp As long as somebody said it
8:55
I can use one of those in 2024 That's a major stamp right there
9:00
No, that's a fact. Bro, I used to do this. I tell this story before, but I was on the radio when Clue first started putting out tapes
9:07
and we used to be, how the hell is he getting this shit? Like, how, you know, me and Tech would be like, how is he getting this
9:13
Dreaming, dreams by Biggie, all these things. I heard first on a Clue tape
9:19
So I used to snatch the songs off his tape, and where it said, Clue Menardee
9:25
Swing Tech! Butchering shit I'm butchering it man I told Cluedo
9:34
He said oh that's great Just what we could do though You know Freeway
9:38

22:36
I seen a pool shiesty made by Nike. But the border that I seen with it was spicy
22:41
I ain't hiding from nobody. I'm icy. I'm like the Taliban Gucci man in my wifey

For sure. So me and Free got an album we're working on right now. Beanie Siegel's the executive producer
27:06
It's basically highlighting the shooting that happened in Philadelphia, Mass Jig, at the end of Ramadan
27:10
It was a Ramadan shooting up. I'm sure it may see, and then everybody heard about it. So that prompted this project
27:16
Me and Free went in the studio and felt like we needed to do a project that was for the streets that would kind of counter
27:20
what we got going on with this demonism. Okay. For sure, for sure

I like how you put that, too, the demonism. It's called Free Laws. Free Laws, okay

You know what I'm saying? Through gun violence. And on your platform, I was allowed to speak for him
27:45
and have his streams run on my man, D.D. Porter. You know what I'm saying? And, man, you showed us so much love, man
27:51
You know what I'm saying? And it was a time when we was all stuck in the house. You know what I'm saying? Yeah, for sure
27:55
And it was your first joint. Yeah, that was my first Zoom. Your very first Zoom

28:25

28:30
Yeah. It was like, let's do this, man. That's Andy Benjamin up here. Oh, man. We really appreciate that
28:33
That's right. I appreciate you. You know, that's my bro. He from the same city, so he had us on there. We really did that thing
