VARIOUS OF DAMAGED AREA DARAA, SYRIA - JUNE 29, 2026: Hundreds of families fled the village of Abdin in Syria's southern Daraa province on Monday, June 29, after an Israeli ground raid and simultaneous airstrikes targeted the area. Abdin Mayor Mahmoud Muref said Israeli military vehicles moved overnight from the Al-Jazeera Barracks in the nearby village of Maariya and took up positions at a former military site near Abdin, where troops set up tents. He said the area is widely used by farmers and shepherds, adding that the military presence has alarmed local residents. According to Muref, Israeli forces later advanced toward Abdin and Jamla, prompting villagers to block roads with stones in protest. He said Israeli soldiers opened fire toward residential areas during the confrontation, forcing between 100 and 200 families, mostly women, children and the elderly, to flee to nearby villages. Resident Abdullah Mohammed al-Qasim said Israeli patrols had frequently operated around the village in recent months and that troops set up checkpoints at the village entrances during the latest operation, triggering protests by residents. He added that Israeli fighter jets and helicopters flew over the area overnight, causing panic among civilians. Another resident, Ahmed al-Hussein, said Israeli forces had intensified their activities in villages across the region in recent months, stressing that residents were determined to remain on their land. The Israeli military claimed that its forces came under fire in the area and responded with artillery fire. It said no soldiers were injured and confirmed that a military helicopter had been deployed, saying it operated over an open area. Syria urged the UN and the international community to assume their responsibilities and take measures to end repeated violations. It also urged respect for the Disengagement Agreement in a manner that preserves Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. The statement came after the Israeli army earlier said its forces killed two people in southern Syria, claiming they had moved “unusually” inside a so-called “security zone” established by Israel in Syrian territory. Following the fall of the Assad regime on Dec. 8, 2024, Israel declared the collapse of the 1974 Disengagement Agreement and occupied a buffer zone on the Syrian side of the border.
