UMM MUHAMMAD ABU HAMASH, MOTHER OF MUHAMMAD ABU HAMASH, SPEAKING TO REPORTER (Arabic)DEIR AL-BALAH, PALESTINE - JULY 9, 2026: A Palestinian mother recovered the remains of her son days after he was killed in an Israeli attack. After days of unsuccessful attempts to recover his body, the mother was finally able to retrieve her son's remains from the "Yellow Line" area east of Deir al-Balah. Umm Muhammad Abu Hamash said the body of her son, Muhammad Abu Hamash, remained in the area for nine days because Israeli forces prevented health and civil defense teams from approaching the site. The grieving mother said those who tried to recover the body were blocked by tank fire and heavy shooting. She said she had appealed for days to officials, medical teams, civil defense crews and the International Committee of the Red Cross, but her efforts were unsuccessful. After finally reaching the area, the mother said only her son’s bones were left. She was seen embracing and kissing the remains before wrapping them in a shroud for burial. In recent weeks, the Israeli army has expanded its control across parts of the Gaza Strip by moving concrete barriers westward marking the so-called “Yellow Line,” widening the restricted zone and forcing more Palestinians to flee. Israeli forces remain deployed along the Yellow Line, a security buffer inside the Gaza Strip that bars Palestinians from accessing nearby areas. Israel currently controls more than 70% of the enclave. According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, Israeli violations since the ceasefire took effect have killed 1,045 Palestinians and injured 3,380 others, most of them women and children. Since Oct. 8, 2023, more than 73,000 Palestinians have been killed and over 173,000 wounded in Gaza, while about 90% of the enclave’s civilian infrastructure has been destroyed.
