The blaze, which broke out near La Bisbal d'Emporda before spreading into the Les Gavarres mountain range, has reached areas near Calonge and Sant Antoni, prompting authorities to confine several municipalities as firefighters battle the advancing fire. Nearly 50,000 people were evacuated as a precaution after fast-moving wildfires swept through parts of Spain's northeastern Catalonia region, authorities said on Friday. The fires, fueled by strong winds, broke out near Girona and spread across several municipalities, affecting around 10 communities. Officials said the blazes were still not under control and that military emergency units had been called in to support firefighting operations. Authorities also advised the public to avoid non-essential travel between Barcelona and Girona. Spain has faced an exceptionally hot start to summer, with this week recording the country's two hottest June days on record. Last summer was Spain's worst wildfire season in more than three decades, according to the Environment Ministry.
