Serbia: Nazi-era shipwrecks emerge as Danube water levels fall in Serbia.

Footage from the Danube on Tuesday, Aug. 11, showed the remains of a German vessel surrounded by sandbanks. The vessel was part of Germany's Black Sea fleet and was deliberately sunk near Prahovo in September 1944 as Soviet forces advanced during World War II. Up to 200 German military vessels were scuttled in the area, leaving wrecks along this stretch of the Danube that become more exposed when water levels fall. Flowing through 10 countries, the Danube - Europe's second-longest river- supports navigation, hydropower and cooling water supplies for several major thermal and nuclear power stations. According to the EU's European Drought Observatory, drought conditions remained severe across much of the continent through July, while worsening further in central-western Europe. At this time of year, Alpine snowmelt and rainfall would typically replenish the waterways, but persistent drought and prolonged heat waves have pushed the Rhine, Danube and Po to near-historic lows in August.
