People cooled off at fountains, pools, parks and public spaces across the Italian capital, while authorities installed water cannons in front of the Colosseum to help people cope with the high temperatures. Tourists gathered at fountains in St. John Lateran Square, Piazza di Spagna, Piazza del Popolo and Piazza Pia to escape the scorching weather as the prolonged heatwave continued to affect daily life across the country. The heatwave, driven by an African anticyclone, prompted Italy's Health Ministry to place 11 cities under its highest heat alert, with more cities expected to be added in the coming days as temperatures are forecast to exceed 40 degrees Celsius.
