Naples was among 25 Italian cities placed under the highest heat alert as residents and tourists sought relief from the sweltering conditions. People stayed in the shade, cooled off with water, and used umbrellas and hats to protect themselves from the intense sun as the heatwave gripped the southern Italian city. Italy has experienced four major heat waves so far this year (late May, second half of June, mid-July, and the ongoing one that began in late July/early August). Several of them, particularly the intense June wave, have been linked to multiple deaths.
