The events mark the 40th day after the martyrdom of Prophet Muhammad’s grandson Imam Hussein and 72 of his companions in Karbala. Local and foreign visitors gathered in the area between the shrines of Imam Hussein and his brother Imam Abbas. Pilgrims joined mourning processions accompanied by elegies as part of the religious commemorations. Visitors carried black flags and mourning symbols while others prayed near the shrines.
