Sermon delivered after the prayers emphasized messages of unity and solidarity, highlighting hopes for a new beginning following years of hardship faced by the Syrian people. After the prayers, many Syrians visited cemeteries to pray at the graves of their relatives. Residents expressed relief at celebrating Eid al-Adha in a safer and calmer atmosphere after Raqqa was liberated from the YPG terrorist organization. The strong turnout for Eid prayers drew attention in the city, which for years had been associated with conflict, destruction and forced displacement. The Eid al-Adha holiday commemorates the willingness of the Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son at God’s command, before a ram was sent as a divine substitute at the last moment. Muslims sacrifice animals in commemoration of this intervention and share the meat with the poor and their relatives.
