Khamenei's coffin arrived in Mashhad earlier on Thursday ahead of his burial, Iranian state media reported. The burial marks the final stage of funeral ceremonies that began on July 4 and included events in Tehran, Qom, Baghdad, Najaf and Karbala. Khamenei was killed in a joint US-Israeli attack on Iran on Feb. 28, triggering weeks of war and escalating tensions across the region. The Imam Reza Shrine, one of Shia Islam's holiest sites, is the final resting place for Khamenei under the official funeral schedule.
