Iraq: Karbala prepares for funeral of Iran's slain Supreme Leader Khamenei.

VARIOUS OF PREPARATIONS FOR FUNERAL CEREMONY OF KHAMENEI IN KARBALA KARBALA, IRAQ - JULY 7, 2026: Preparations were underway in the Iraqi city of Karbala on Tuesday for a funeral ceremony for Iran's late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Iranian and Iraqi flags and posters of Khamenei were displayed along major streets ahead of the ceremony. Khamenei was killed in US-Israeli strikes on Iran that began on Feb. 28 and were followed by Iranian retaliation. Funeral ceremonies began on Friday, with foreign leaders and official delegations paying tribute. Under the official schedule, a public farewell and the main funeral procession took place in Tehran on Monday, followed by funeral rites in the Iranian city of Qom on Tuesday. On July 8, ceremonies are scheduled in Iraq, including in Baghdad, Najaf and Karbala, where the body will be received by religious and political figures before being transferred to major Shia shrines. The final funeral and burial ceremony is scheduled for July 9 at the Imam Ali Reza Shrine in the northeastern city of Mashhad, one of Shia Islam's holiest sites.
