Storyline Birdwatching tourism revenue funds migratory bird protection in China Local authorities in east China's Jiangxi Province are using tourism revenues from birdwatching to strengthen local bird protection efforts, creating a sustainable loop in the so-called "migratory bird economy." Already this season, visitors have been flocking to an ancient village in Liukeng Township, to watch migratory birds and enjoy the local cuisine and history as part of their travel experience. Part of the revenues from the birdwatching experiences has gone back into bird conservation efforts, like hiring dedicated patrol teams. Xiong Si, Deputy head, Le'an County Liukeng Township government: "But as more birds arrive, which attracts more tourists, our tourism tax revenue has increased. Now we can use the income brought by birdwatching tourism to provide professional protection, which helps ensure long-term development of the migratory bird economy." The county has also introduced a government-backed insurance program to compensate residents for damage caused by wild animals. The program helps protect farmers' property rights, reduces their losses, and eases tensions between wildlife protection efforts and farmers. Zhang Xin, Deputy director, Le'an County Forestry Bureau: "This insurance program gives residents peace of mind, allowing us to truly achieve development through protection, and consolidate protection through development." In 2025, 47 claims were handled in the county, with total payouts reaching about 17,000 U.S. dollars. [Restrictions: No access Chinese mainland]
