Storyline Cities in SW China's Yunnan enrich greenery with tropical fruit trees Residents in southwest China's Yunnan Province are enjoying free produce, thanks to trees that are bearing tropical fruit. Jackfruit, coconut, and mango trees line the streets and alleyways. And when their fruit ripens, municipal management teams harvest it and share it with residents and tourists. Tourist: "I'm here on a trip, and it's my first time seeing these fruits—jackfruit and mangoes—growing in the green space along the street. It's really a really fresh experience for me. Then I went out for a wander, and a staff member told me that after the fruits are picked, they can give them to us. It felt like such a lovely surprise." Ma Jing, head of greening, local urban development company: "These are local fruits well suited to the climate and soil, with high survival rates and lower maintenance costs. We regularly prune and control tree height and reinforce branches to prevent safety risks." According to customs data, Yunnan's agricultural trade with ASEAN topped 2.6 billion U.S. dollars in H1 last year, a nearly 24 percent annual increase. [Restrictions: No access Chinese mainland]
