Storyline Chinese travelers embrace niche experiences during May Day holiday Beach vacation and movies are quite typical holiday activities. But the combination of both is quite new on Southern China's Wuzhizhou Island, Hainan Province. During the Labor Day holiday, local tourism authorities have put up posters of upcoming blockbusters, and installed movie projectors on the beach, to attract tourists and stimulate consumer spending. Movie-related activities are held not just at the destinations, but also throughout the travel time. Sichuan Airlines have decorated some of their flights based on scenes filmed in the cities they are flying off to. Passenger: "My child and I both love to watch movies. So we feel very lucky to have booked this flight. There are many interesting movie elements in the cabin, helping us decide what movies should we watch during the holiday." Meanwhile in downtown Chengdu, a restaurant has hired a robotic chef to help manage the surge in customers. Customer: "They taste quite good, I have no idea they were cooked by a robot." Teng Dan, Chief of Operations, Restaurant in Chengdu: "We serve around 400 customers per day. The kitchen has to make over 100 dishes Mapo Tofu or other traditional Sichuan cuisines. Now with the smart chef, smart kitchen, we are able to cut the cooking time by 40 percent, and the prices by 10 to 20 yuan per dish." While many people are in typical tourist mode, going sightseeing or trying local food, some people are traveling just to shop. At the Yiwu International Trade Center in Zhejiang Province, many tourists have started their holiday with an empty suitcase in hand, hoping to load it up with the best bargains. Hu Huiya, Business Owner, China Yiwu International Trade Center: "We have closed more than a dozen deals today, all with retail customers." The city of Yiwu has been a wholesale and trade hub in China for decades. In recent years, wholesalers here have opened their doors to retail customers to boost sales.
