VARIOUS OF SEARCH AND RESCUE OPERATIONS UNDERWAY FOR BOY TRAPPED IN WELL WHILE RELATIVES WAITING AT SCENE EL-BAYADH, ALGERIA - SEPT. 5: Algerian rescue teams raced against time Saturday to reach a 10-year-old boy who has been trapped for more than three days inside an 80-meter-deep (262-foot) dry well in the western province of El Bayadh. “Dad, get me out,” were the last words Mohamed Fayed heard from his son Ayoub before the boy’s voice fell silent inside the well on the family’s farm in the municipality of Ghassoul. Ayoub fell through a deteriorated wooden board covering the well’s opening while playing near the family home, according to his father’s account to local media. Rescue efforts have been complicated by the well’s diameter of just 40 centimeters (16 inches), making a direct descent almost impossible, as well as unstable soil, the risk of collapse and layers of solid rock. Ayoub’s condition remained unknown as rescuers carefully dug a horizontal passage toward his location. Authorities in El Bayadh formed a crisis unit headed by provincial Governor Noureddine Belaribi and involving civil defense, security, military and local officials. The provincial administration said heavy machinery and a specialized well camera had been deployed, while medical teams and an equipped ambulance were stationed at the site. Large crowds gathered near the well to support Ayoub’s family, which remained at the site awaiting news as rescue crews continued their efforts. The incident has drawn comparisons with Moroccan boy Rayan, who died after spending more than 100 hours trapped in a 32-meter-deep well in February 2022, as well as Algerian man Ayach Mahjoubi, whose body was recovered after a nine-day operation after he fell into a well around 100 meters deep in M’Sila province in December 2018.
