VARIOUS OF PEOPLE ATTENDING 166TH SESSION OF ARAB LEAGUE COUNCILCAIRO, EGYPT — SEPT. 7, 2026: Arab foreign ministers on Monday rejected Iranian escalation and attacks targeting several Arab countries, as well as continuing Israeli attacks and violations in Palestine, Lebanon, and Syria. The positions came during the 166th session of the Arab League Council at the foreign ministers level at the pan-Arab organization’s headquarters in Cairo. The meeting, chaired by Tunisia and represented by its Foreign Minister Mohamed Ali Nafti, discussed regional developments, particularly Iranian escalation and attacks targeting several Arab states, as well as continuing Israeli attacks and violations in Palestine, Lebanon, and Syria. Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty said Cairo “categorically condemns” Iranian attacks targeting Arab countries and rejects any violation of the sovereignty, security, or territorial integrity of Arab states. He stressed the need to prevent the confrontation from expanding and called for a return to diplomacy to address sources of tension and achieve de-escalation. Abdelatty also called for building on the memorandum of understanding reached between the US and Iran in June with the aim of reaching a final and sustainable agreement. Turning to the Palestinian territories, the Egyptian foreign minister said rapidly developing regional events must not divert attention from the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip and the occupied West Bank. He reiterated Egypt’s rejection of displacement, occupation, annexation, and attempts to liquidate the Palestinian cause. Abdelatty said Cairo would continue efforts to consolidate the Gaza ceasefire, implement the Sharm el-Sheikh understandings, and complete the roadmap toward phase two of US President Donald Trump’s Gaza peace plan, including an Israeli withdrawal from the enclave. He also called for full and sustained humanitarian access, support for early recovery and reconstruction, and empowering the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza as a step toward the Palestinian Authority resuming its responsibilities in Gaza and the West Bank. Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Fahmy also attended the meeting, marking his first participation in a ministerial-level session since taking office. The session brings together foreign ministers from the Arab League’s member states to coordinate positions on regional political and security developments amid the ongoing US-Iran conflict and Israeli military operations across the region.
