At that time, the basic promise was easy to understand. Build a completely new, approximately 500-kilometre railway between Ahmedabad and Mumbai, operate it with Japanese Shinkansen technology at up to 320 km/h, and reduce a journey that conventional trains needed more than six hours to complete to roughly two hours. The engineering concept was ambitious, the financing was unusually favorable, and the political symbolism was enormous. India would receive its first true high-speed railway. Japan would export not merely a train, but an entire know-how and domestic technology. And the corridor would become a prototype for a future Indian high-speed network. Over the past five years, this project, like almost every megaproject, has faced delays, cost overruns and political tensions.
