It could be said that the Government is on the road to establish a single, publicly-owned Great British Railways (GBR), an entity which by combining both, the infrastructure management and train services, will replace the decades old, and for Britain characteristic, rail franchising system. This significant shift in the approach of governing railways, was already announced in 2021, after the COVID crisis, which caused a revenue collapse and the effective franchises abolition. The Government back then had to take over the financial risks associated with rail passenger transport, which crushed the already fragmented system involving multiple operators and franchises. In that regard, the Secretary of State for Transport described the situation in a recent statement: “the declining public trust and pride in today’s railway in Britain are symptoms of a system which has lost sight of the very people and customers it is meant to serve. A railway that, for 3 decades, has been focused on contracts and codes rather than the needs of its customers and taxpayers… therefore, Britain deserves a railway fit for its future.” As under this reform, the British government aims to improve reliability, safety, accessibility, and overall quality of rail services, and as we believe the future of the cradle of railways is always an important topic for a discussion on Railways Explained, we decided to analyze it in detail, and share with you our opinion!
