Why Norway's Railways Are So Unique?

How did Norway build and operate a railway system across mountains, fjords, deep valleys and some of Europe's harshest weather conditions? In this episode of Railways Explained, we explore the history, engineering and organization of Norwegian railways-from the opening of the Hovedbanen in 1854 and the construction of the Bergen and Flåm lines to electrification, railway restructuring and today's divided institutional model.
