The railways in the Pilbara form a vast network of privately owned, standard-gauge heavy-haul lines in the remote northwest of Western Australia, built primarily to transport enormous quantities of iron ore from isolated inland mines to coastal export ports. Developed from the mid-1960s, following the lifting of Australia’s iron ore export ban, these railways connect key mining regions to major ports such as Port Hedland, Dampier, and Cape Lambert, playing a crucial role in transforming the Pilbara into one of the world’s most important iron ore regions. Spanning nearly 3,000 kilometers, this system operates some of the longest and heaviest trains in the world — often stretching beyond 3.5 kilometers, with up to 300 cars carrying as much as 30,000 tonnes of ore per journey.
