As New Zealand’s largest transport infrastructure investment to date, the project includes two new underground stations—Te Waihorotiu and Karanga-a-Hape—alongside major upgrades to existing ones, allowing for a dramatic increase in capacity, with up to 20 trains per hour in each direction and the introduction of longer, nine-car electric trains. Built to address long-standing capacity constraints, the CRL is expected to double the number of people who can reach the city center within 30 minutes, while also reducing congestion and improving reliability. Jointly funded by the New Zealand Government and Auckland Council, the project has seen its cost rise to around $5.5 billion, largely due to pandemic-related disruptions, with construction now in advanced stages, including completed tunneling and initial testing, and full passenger operations currently expected to begin in 2026.
