Designed to connect key districts of Poland’s capital with reliable, high-capacity service, it has become one of the backbone systems of everyday mobility across the Warsaw metropolitan area. The Warsaw SKM network currently operates five main lines, all running on the city’s existing railway infrastructure while providing fast, frequent connections across Warsaw and its suburbs. Beyond SKM itself, Warsaw is also served by WKD—Warszawska Kolej Dojazdowa—a separate suburban railway running on its own dedicated 36 km line southwest of the city, offering fast and reliable commuter connections to towns such as Pruszków and Grodzisk Mazowiecki. When it comes to rail transport, passengers can also rely on Koleje Mazowieckie, the regional railway operator for the entire Masovian Voivodeship. Although Koleje Mazowieckie is not owned by the city, its trains play an important role in Warsaw’s daily mobility. The Warsaw SKM fleet consists of 49 modern electric multiple units manufactured in Poland by Newag and PESA. These fully electric trains, compatible with the 3 kV DC overhead system and capable of reaching speeds of up to 160 km/h, operate in formations of 3 to 6 cars depending on demand, with longer sets used during peak hours.
