Welcome back to All Things Mobile's coverage of the Apple iPhone 18 and Duo event
0:13
I'm I as Actors PCMag. This is Scott Stein from CNET. Joining us is Timothy Beckworth
0:20
Timothy, what did you think of what we saw? I mean, it was really exciting. I don't know that there were as many surprises in the Surprise and Shine event
0:28
but everything we saw looked really interesting. I mean, the iPhone Duo obviously is going to grab the most headlines
0:33
but tons of new AI features, tons of new, you know, small hardware upgrades, tons of new Apple intelligence and Siri stuff
0:41
So there's going to be a lot for Apple fans to dig into. I will say it wasn't a huge break in departure from past keynotes
0:49
Ternus is definitely having like kind of continuity be the theme of his first keynote
0:55
But it's really exciting and I can't wait to get hands on some of these devices and see what they're like in real life
1:02
We've also got Bridget Carey live at the event right now. She's smiling probably because of the duo or maybe not
1:08
Bridget, how is it over there in the demo zone? Wow, this is such a heavy packed event of information
1:18
I am here at the Steve Jobs Theater. behind me. People are getting their first hands on time with the duo and all the things announced
1:29
Are you guys overwhelmed? There's a lot of stuff going on with changes to the watch
1:33
and the duo. And I'm impressed at how much, I guess, emphasis they would say that they put on
1:40
all the details of these new products. Now, I'm going to talk to you while I'm walking
1:44
and I'm going to try to see if I can get up to this phone in person. So go ahead and ask me
1:49
some questions while I walk. Yeah, see if you can find the Duo. Okay, so yeah, when you get the iPhone Duo
1:54
see if it's got MagSafe on it because we didn't hear anything about that. And we did see the pricing
1:58
for the two terabyte one. It's $3,199. It's cheaper than a Vision Pro
2:06
Oh, dear gosh. Okay, so we're getting closer and closer to the iPhone
2:11
I'm getting pros here. I got pros here. Those are the pros
2:16
And the new color. Yeah. It's definitely a dark burgundy. Every year you need a new color, guys
2:25
You know how it goes. You know how it goes. You don't see the duo yet
2:30
I'm hunting. I'm hunting. But when I see it, I got to go because I got to get footage too
2:34
There's so much to do. Look for where there's the most people. Look for the biggest crowd
2:38
Yeah. Okay, good luck out there. This is my first time here in person
2:45
And I knew it was going to be wacky. and exciting, but I'm also living for this moment
2:55
Oh, I found it. Oh, I found it. Okay, here we go. It's busy in there, Debra
3:01
It's actually a little smaller than I thought. Hold on. Okay. The crease
3:07
We've got to talk about this crease. I don't know if you can see it. Can you see it? It is on a stand, so it's not exactly something I can touch right now
3:14
but no crease. I cannot see any crease. Yeah, Apple talked about a nanotexture on there, but it's reflections, which I think is helping the crease
3:24
Yeah, I think it is. And that's how you get on the higher end iPads or Macs
3:31
It's crazy. Hold on. We'll get a better shot. What other questions you guys have? I'm curious about that MagSafe also. Here we go. We're seeing it folded
3:43
There it is. Okay, there it is. That's the iPhone Duo, open with a 7.6-inch screen
3:50
Apple says they've redesigned iOS. It's running iOS. It's running iOS, not iPadOS
3:55
They said inspired by iPad. So there you go. It's the, like an iPad, it's like iPads being inspired by Macs
4:03
You have these in-between things. I like the opening animations a lot
4:07
Can you see the under-screen camera? Is that visible on the screen
4:12
No, it's not. I don't see it. Yeah, I don't see it
4:16
And I mean, I'm looking up really close here. This thing looks kind of cute too
4:21
It has a cuteness of a size format. Like it's not overwhelming like others
4:29
Like the Pro Max. It's hard to tell when you watch that. Yeah, it's hard. I've been living a Pro Max life for a while
4:34
So this definitely has a little bit of more demure about it
4:40
iPhone Air. It's so thin. I think that's what it is. What happened to iPhone Air? It is. I mean, that is your iPhone Air. It's airy tint
4:49
Yeah. Well, I'm going to see if we can get our hands on it at another table
4:55
Yep. I think this is it. We're able to get our hands on it. All right. So I'm going to get back to you guys
5:00
Because now I have to kind of make my way through it. Let you know what it's like. Yeah. I'm going to dive in
5:05
But right now I can tell you, I don't see that crease. I don't see that selfie cam. It's looking pretty sharp
5:13
and like smaller than you thought. And I don't see... Sorry, it's hard to tell on this little camera
5:19
but I'm going to let you guys go, shot it up. But I can tell you from what I'm eyeballing
5:25
I'm not seeing pieces. Good luck out there. Yeah, good luck. Try to feel the crease
5:30
I want to know more about this. Good luck getting to the hands-on zone for the duo
5:34
That's the holy grail. It's always like a bit like a farmer's market out there
5:38
If farmer's market just had lots of Apple products. Like it's pretty..
5:42
I don't know. I just went to Borough Market in London. I did not do anything like that
5:45
So I'm going to assume it's nice. It's like a very busy farmer. It's like the busiest farmer's market
5:51
It's a strange ogy. It's super crowded. They always have those ones on display on the pedestals, plus the hands-on zones where they usually try to walk you through it a little bit
6:02
Yeah, what surprised me about this event? I mean, not a lot because we did hear about a lot of this stuff
6:07
A little surprising that they did not say anything more about iPad to this except for inspired by iPad
6:16
Like they really redesigned. It's a very different flow of interactions and graphic effects than the iPad
6:22
It seems like its own thing on a number of levels. And that wild opening graphic animation they added, which reminded me of like Vision Pro stuff
6:30
Like it feels very spatial. It looks like the thing is shifting into the background when you open it
6:36
The docks on the side, no built-in pencil. No, it supports pencil, but there is no pencil for this
6:45
It's BYO pencil. Take it out of your bag. Pencil if you got one
6:50
But then the other thing is that I found, the report suggested this
6:55
but the whole audio intelligence and recap thing on Apple Watch is a big, weird, interesting zone
7:03
Not only does it get into the question of do you trust that
7:08
Is it safe to use? Is it recording conversations? But they're going into the same territory that I've already been looking at on a lot of AI wearables, on smart glasses
7:17
That is a preview of what they're going to start dipping into on the smart glasses front. This event is just like soaked Scott mind for all of the future stuff Timothy what did you think coming away from this event Are you floored by the duo are you excited about the watch uh apple actually spent time talking about specs which is well kind of
7:37
unusual they don't really go into they always talk about the chip but they're talking about how
7:41
much faster it is compared to the previous generations timothy what did you what's your
7:45
takeaway yeah i'm more excited for the iphone duo than i thought i would be it does look really slick
7:52
you know based in the videos and those short little previews Bridget gave us I will say one
7:56
thing that really interested me is how Apple is positioning itself as sort of an AI device
8:01
and Scott alluded to this you know there's all these new AI wearables that will record
8:06
conversations or take notes for you like granola or you know the wearables and Apple's kind of
8:12
saying you don't need any of that stuff you can do it all on your iPhone or on your Apple watch
8:17
you know they did the same thing with like aura and whoop with their readiness score you know you
8:21
don't need a screen free wearable. We've got everything you need. We have all the AI features
8:26
You can just do it right on your Apple devices. So for a company that has been kind of playing
8:31
major catch up in the AI race for a couple of years, it was really interesting to see how
8:37
they're kind of promoting themselves as like an AI hub. So that was interesting to me. I felt like
8:43
that was a common thread throughout pretty much all of the presentations. And yeah, the recording
8:49
live rewind feature was definitely controversial in the Mashable group chat. I know those kind
8:55
of tools are really popular in Silicon Valley right now, but yeah, obviously some privacy
9:00
implications. Yeah. I want to bring it back to the duo because I've been using a folding device
9:06
as my main phone for the past three years. And Apple started talking about all the issues people
9:11
have with their phones and what they wanted to do differently. And I will say they did address a lot
9:17
of the problems. They talked about this crease that will be harder to see. There's a nanotexture
9:21
on the display. Now, if you use one of these folding devices, when you end up seeing the crease
9:26
when it reflects, see that? You can see it. You remove the reflection and you're not going to see
9:31
that. Apple's done a really interesting idea with that because they charge extra for the nanotexture
9:36
on MacBook Pros, charge extra on the iPad Pros, but this is going to be standard, it looks like
9:42
with the iPhone Duo. That's a huge thing. Also, strangely, the front of the iPhone Duo goes all
9:50
the way up to the corner. It's an asymmetrical screen. It looks like a D versus the regular
9:55
bounded rectangle. So I'm kind of curious about that. And also that display, right? You open it
10:00
up and you have basically your front screen continuing. This bothered me because it looks
10:05
like you only get one layout because you've got your front screen and your inner screen
10:10
but I like having two different layouts because you use them very differently
10:14
I don't know if Apple's going to have issues with that, but it's definitely a polished looking product for a first generation device
10:23
This is Celso's feed. This is Celso's feed from the demo room
10:29
What you're watching right now is a live feed from the demo room. The Apple
10:34
A full Domatic stand. They have it there opening and closing for you to take a look at how the crease works
10:41
I mean, yeah, having that Nano as the standard, look, they're not into throwing expensive features on a phone standard just for fun
10:48
They could have upcharged, but clearly there's a reason why they're putting it out. So I agree
10:52
I think it's to help with that matter because otherwise you just have it as an upcharge to it
11:01
We'll stop with the cameras, okay? Because this is a very expensive product
11:05
Timothy, we got two cameras, 48 megapixel fusion cameras. They're claiming a 2X optical quality telephoto
11:12
I always get weirded out by optical quality versus optical. So you got the two cameras
11:17
You have the ability to take selfies with the back camera, you know, like you could do with all the other devices
11:22
What did you think about that and the under display camera on the inside of the device
11:27
Something that Samsung used to have, Google's never had, but Apple will have from the start
11:32
I was pleasantly surprised with the camera array they have on this, and I love the underscreen camera. Also, I've been testing the Samsung foldables, and the selfie camera on it is worthless. Like, I wish it wasn't even there. It just takes up space on the display. It's absolutely garbage quality. You know, I just use the back cameras anyway, so the prospect of a better selfie camera that doesn't take up screen space is very exciting to me. It seems like a very Apple thing to do
12:02
So I'm pleasantly surprised. Like I said, the 48 megapixel, that seems like it'll be pretty decent
12:09
The trade-off with a lot of foldables has been like, it's a really cool device, really cool display, but the cameras aren't very good
12:16
Or that's been the case with at least some of Samsung's foldables. So not as many sacrifices as I was expecting, to be honest
12:23
So good on Apple. Yeah, they've put in the A20 Pro processor, which is also in the new iPhone Pro 18 and Pro Max, which nobody's going to be talking about because of this
12:35
And they keep showing us this thing folding, the Duo opening and closing. A lot of people with the Fold 8 have been complaining that, yeah, it looks really flat when you first get it
12:42
But after a couple of weeks, it starts looking like, oh, there's that crease again. Apple directly talked about that in this case
12:50
This thing will look flat for as long as it can because they're going to have that nanotexture
12:54
they've got it reinforced, they claim that they have extra glass behind the OLEDs
12:58
to keep it flat. There's a lot of talk about structural stability. They didn't talk about guarantees of durability
13:04
No. It was IP68. Yes, IP68, but they didn't talk about which means it's dustproof and waterproof
13:09
virtually. Yeah. But they did put a lot into that. I'm also really curious about
13:14
the layout. I mean, I'm curious what your thoughts about it are too. They
13:17
changed a lot of the layouts. They gave a lot of thought into that. This is like the biggest kind of
13:22
interface layout change since the iPhone 10 and more so because you're putting a lot of the menus
13:26
on the side now. And I'm curious about your thoughts about that. I'm curious ergonomically
13:30
if this is going to be good, if it's going to throw people. And it's different than the iPad
13:34
too. It's a different beast from all of them. Do you think people who are used to the iPad are going to have a shorter learning curve
13:46
There are some key differences for sure. Diaz's point, on the iPad OS, you can have
13:51
like multiple essentially desktops, I believe. So I'm assuming that will also be the case here
13:57
but it'll be interesting to actually test that out. But there will definitely be a learning curve
14:01
because it's not just a whole new layout, it's also the introduction of Siri
14:06
And I think people are going to be learning how to use that for the first time
14:09
There's the brand new app and all the different ways it's built into the dynamic island
14:14
and the functionality of the phone. So sort of a double learning curve for the average Apple customer, I think
14:19
yeah yeah i don't think it's at all the same as the ipad yeah i agree it's it's basically it is
14:25
its own thing and i wonder about the thumb navigation of that stuff and how apps will
14:29
adapt to it or you know will it be automatic there you can kind of see the crease here i'm
14:34
sorry to interrupt you can kind of see where the blue line in the center you do and it's flexing
14:39
right now so sorry you were saying i just want to make sure that people who just go crazy over
14:44
this stuff like oh it's amazing it's like well let's see how it does because this is not the
14:49
first foldable ever Samsung been doing it for generations we got this thing I very curious about that the new interface like you talking about because it does it does incentivize using it with one hand Use it with the right hand use it this way and make sure you can hold on to something It giving you a place to put your hand which
15:08
when you're holding a foldable, usually your hands are on the outside. But with this, with
15:12
the dock on the right, you can basically have your thumb on it, kind of like the Kindle we were talking about earlier
15:16
It is. It's kind of an asymmetric design. It's asymmetric. It reminds me of Kindle Oasis or something. It's not exactly like that
15:23
But it's, yeah, you had, like you mentioned, the point and the curve and the screen design
15:27
and the way apps are going to be sort of showing one thing here and another bit on the side
15:32
And again, I'm also curious about how many layouts will be possible
15:36
We did see a bunch of them shown here. I'm curious how flexible that is
15:41
Have we seen all of the layout tricks? Are we, you know, compared to over the years with the iPad, I've looked at it a lot
15:47
We've seen a lot of different types of splits and orientations with that
15:52
It doesn't look like that's on the table here. And it's definitely not multi-windowing as far as I can see, other than the few that they've showed
15:59
But I'm super curious about how flexible that is. Yeah, I think Apple went small on the idea of iOS with this
16:05
But I also think that's a learning curve thing. They do not want people to get used to it
16:09
They don't want people to get lost. They want to go very slowly. Apple's got a history of this
16:12
They very slowly introduce new kinds of interfaces, new features. iPad, we've seen that grow and grow and grow
16:19
iPhone as well. I'm assuming we're going to get a lot of this in the second and third generations, but for first swing, they really went big
16:27
And I'm excited about this because I want to try this out. Obviously, I'm going to talk about the Apple Pencil because I'm excited about that
16:35
This is a Samsung stylus, and this is a Pixel. They're about the same size, okay
16:40
I want to be able to write on both screens. And Apple said you'll be able to write on both screens, although somebody that was live at the show was saying it's the USB-C Pencil only
16:49
which I hope is not true because also that wouldn't make sense because it would charge
16:53
It would make sense because otherwise how do you charge it? It gets into that whole thing
16:59
I mean, this is like Duo Gen 2. But then does that also mean you probably don't have any of those more advanced features that the Pencil Pro has
17:09
Is it just writing? I'm sure, I don't know if it has any of those hover or other gyro type elements that are at play
17:16
Again, that's a lot to ask because even having the pencil work is a nice win
17:20
It might be they just got that over the finish line, it sounds like, where it's like, I mean, because you would think with Apple that the pencil
17:26
if it did work, why not include the pencil with it? But maybe this is like an 11th hour thing that they're like
17:30
it does work with that. Let's try it out for a year. Next year, we'll have the real full design pencil for this
17:37
The golf pencil. Yeah, we'll have the nice thing that attaches to the side and adds whatever you want
17:41
I think we've exhausted the iPhone Duo, unless there's anything else anybody needs to say about it
17:46
I mean, I'm just curious to try it, but I'm sure everyone is. And yeah, I don't know
17:52
I'm curious also how it changes perception on affordability for the 18 Pro for people who are now thinking about buying
17:58
$100 increase on the iPhone Pros. Timothy, we saw the mechanical variable aperture
18:05
So moving parts on the iPhone 18, that aperture thing is not available on the Duo
18:12
What do you think about this idea? because Apple's saying we shot it on an iPhone. And then they showed us the back of the iPhone
18:17
without showing us the front of it, like how many other adapters were used for this device
18:23
What do you think of the camera improvements on the Pro? I think they sound really promising
18:29
I mean, I think they said it's, you know, laser cut precision machine parts
18:33
that are thinner than a human hair. It'll be interesting to see if those are equally durable
18:38
but yeah, I mean, major camera upgrades coming, variable aperture is just one of them
18:42
And it sounds like there's going to be a ton of tools that creators are going to be able to use
18:46
I personally am just waiting for like all the AI editing tools that have been standard on like Google, Pixel, Samsung, Android devices for quite a while now
18:56
But based on the demo photos they showed, it looked like you could do professional photography on the iPhones, which, you know, I think that's been true for a couple of years now
19:05
And people kind of look down like, oh, if you're a real pro, you wouldn't be shooting on the iPhone
19:09
But I have very, very good cameras. I mean, that's been true for a while now
19:14
So giving us variable aperture, giving us some additional ways to edit and really just like find the perfect shot
19:22
I'm excited to try it out in person for sure. They definitely sound like some big upgrades, which is what the rumor was, right
19:28
We're going to get big camera upgrades. My first impression is they really delivered on that
19:34
Is there anything that you feel like, I mean, was this enough for the Pro
19:38
Do you feel like you were looking for anything more? or is this kind of what the iPhone is now
19:44
these types of like incremental bits that you add on? I think it's enough with a $100 price increase
19:51
If this had gone up $200 or $300, I would have said
19:55
maybe we need a little bit more to justify really going for it
20:00
But $100 price increase is not too bad given everything that's going on with the memory crisis
20:07
So I do think it's enough. I mean, if you really want the shiny new thing, you're going to go for the Duo anyway, right
20:14
So I think there's plenty of exciting stuff to try out here. Joining us as well is Nina Raymont of ZDNet
20:22
How is the energy over there right now? How excited are you about stuff? Or was this a complete flop to you
20:29
The energy is crazy over here. Everybody is flooding the iPhone Duo table
20:35
It was very difficult to get some photos of it so far
20:39
I did get to see the Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 already
20:44
Got to see the new ceramic finish on the Apple Watch 12
20:50
It's awesome. I personally think that like I've been waiting a long time to see some of these feature upgrades coming to the Apple Watch Series 12
21:02
that Apple seemingly has taken from some of the other wearable competitors, namely Aura
21:09
even Google, with that readiness app. It was nice to see Apple finally
21:16
take that information and bring it to the Apple Watch. Because I mean, last year we got sleep
21:24
scores for the first time. And that was a feature that I feel like I've seen on so many different
21:29
wearable devices. And I was so surprised that it took Apple so long to bring these into the Apple
21:35
Watch. And so now we have that readiness app that's going to tell you every day just how ready you are
21:42
to take on the day and to do more activity or, you know, rest if you need to. And also that sort of
21:49
revamp to other health features like I'm thinking of like the health sensing system and the fact
21:59
that there will be more accurate heart rate readings. I'm looking forward to trying that out
22:05
And also some of the more intelligent features that aren't necessarily related
22:09
to health, like the fact that your Apple Watch is going to be listening to you a lot
22:14
more through, I think it was audio recap or Siri recap. Yeah
22:20
Just like I was very impressed and almost tickled by the fact that like if I not paying attention to something my friend is telling me my Apple Watch will be able to tell me what my friend said Kind of a funny feature in my opinion
22:38
Yeah, Beach is putting up part of the presentation that discussed this potentially, this transcription audio is not recorded or stored on the device
22:45
Audio cannot be accessed. It's encrypted end to end. And you believe you have to opt into using this thing
22:51
Otherwise it's not on by default. I like this idea, but immediately it was a concern here
22:57
What about the legality of two-party states? Carly, our producer, we had that in the other chat saying
23:03
what about recording people's conversations? That was another higher up in the chat
23:08
But Apple's workaround is essentially, we aren't recording you. We're just transcribing you
23:15
And based on how the law catches up to stuff, I think they'll be fine, just fine. Yeah
23:21
I feel like Apple, it seems like this is one way for Apple to dip its toes into more intelligent companions without coming out with an intelligent companion
23:35
kind of releasing one feature on one of its devices, not an iPhone device, your Apple Watch
23:43
that basically can help you listen to things. And it will get Apple Watch users accustomed
23:50
to the idea that a device is always on and kind of helping you along, like identify a song or
23:58
remember what your waiter told you. Kind of give people a year to become comfortable with that
24:03
and then next year maybe introduce AirPods with cameras or something else
24:10
That's a great point. This is basically they're setting the table for the next several years
24:15
Let's talk about AirPods because there was updates to this, but not price updates. They kept it $129
24:20
All AirPods now have ANC, active noise cancellation, which is impressive. And at those prices, pretty low
24:27
They have two variants of the AirPods 5, right, Nina? Yes. Yes, there's one that's going to be $129 and the other will be, I believe, $150
24:39
And the one that is more expensive comes with like a volume node
24:45
And then the standard AirPods 5 that are $129 just comes with like active noise cancellation
24:53
and live translation and one other feature I'm forgetting. I'm curious how good the noise cancellation is on these, on the more open design, because it sounds like, you know, they're bolder about it now, more confident
25:08
Will this, like, close the gap on people picking this over the AirPods Pro or, like, you know, what that all means
25:16
They're also talking about a lot more transparency additions to this, which maybe think of smart glasses
25:22
the idea that this is listening and can filter in sound so if there's sirens going off babies crying
25:29
doorbells theoretically the new version of the airpods are supposed to be better at picking this
25:34
up and bringing you back into that timothy what did you think of the new airpods and their
25:39
ability to bring you back to reality yeah i mean they definitely emphasize the transparency isn't
25:46
going to be like quite so awkward i think there's actually a price decrease on one of these right i
25:52
believe the $150 model is $30 cheaper than than last year's version or the
25:58
version from two years ago with ANC. So they're definitely emphasizing a more like naturalistic
26:02
They keep you in the environment. They keep you interacting with people through things like live translation
26:08
That was a cool demo. So lots, lots of really cool stuff there, some key upgrades
26:14
And again, like I believe the only price decrease of all the new products
26:18
announced, you know, all these accessories are because it's hard to pay for a $2,000 device
26:25
And Apple, of course, did that leasing thing I was talking about. They showed the iPhone 18 Pro and they're like
26:30
you can have this for $35 a month because of their leasing program
26:34
I think that's gonna move a lot of hardware, but these accessories are the things that are actually
26:38
gonna sell because you can afford them. Nina, do you have any other thoughts about iPhones
26:44
or the wearables? Yeah, what hit you here? Yeah, what got you excited? I got very excited seeing the iPhone Duo
26:51
And I also love that new burgundy color on the iPhone 18 Pro
26:58
Just, I'm excited to see and hold the iPhone Duo. I was very interested in sort of like the flat design, especially because whenever ZDNet posts any sort of video depicting a foldable
27:15
whether it's the Z Fold 8, Z Fold 8 Ultra, the Google Pixel Fold, everyone is always talking about the crease and whether they can see the crease or not
27:25
And at least for like the five minutes I got to see that iPhone Duo, it didn't really look like you could see the crease
27:35
Of course, that's going to be maybe different when you have it in your hand and test it out
27:39
But for now, I'm excited for it. And I can't wait to try it out
27:47
Yeah. Apple also showed off the fun ability to show the preview of what you're shooting on one side of the camera
27:54
I mean, on one side of the phone. And the other side of it, you can frame them. And if there's kids involved, you can run Snoopy
27:59
Put Snoopy there. Now, they're excited and they'll look great in the photos
28:04
Timothy, Motorola's had this for a while. I just feel like when I was watching this whole thing, I was swearing
28:10
Because all of this stuff is... You'll always find that. You'll always find stuff. Exactly. You're following a beat
28:14
All of this stuff has existed before and Apple's doing it. And so people are like, this is amazing
28:20
Timothy, do you think this is enough to catch up? Do you think people even know about Motorola's stuff that can do similar abilities
28:28
Yeah. Someone said the other day in our group chat, Apple reheating Motorola's leftovers
28:33
You know, I do remember that Motorola that put a smiley face on the back display
28:38
Samsung, Google, all these foldables let you line up the perfect selfie. It's one of my favorite features and reasons I like foldables
28:46
But does the average person know that? Are they used to it? I don't think so
28:49
I think it's going to be seen as like pretty new and exciting to the average Apple user specifically
28:54
So I think they introduced enough cool stuff here to get people genuinely excited about the iPhone Duo
28:59
So it comes in just a smidge under $2,000, which is better than we thought going into it
29:07
But yeah, it is interesting how Apple's doing things that have been done again, right
29:12
Like this has kind of been their pattern. They're not afraid to be late to the party
29:18
But yeah, some very, very familiar features for those of us who've been testing foldables and are used to using them
29:24
Okay, Nina, I want to ask you one last question before you run. Apple was talking about it's a tablet
29:29
it's a phone. And the third thing they kept saying was, it's a nice bedside clock
29:36
Is that really the best third usage of a $2,000 phone? Yeah, I don't think so. I mean, I like the idea of seeing the time when I wake up on my phone
29:48
but I don't really know if I need to use that as an alarm clock. But I don't know
29:53
maybe they got bored or they didn't really know what to say as their third thing. And they chose
29:57
they chose little alarm clocks instead of something else, something more creative
30:03
Yeah, okay. Well, thank you very much, Nina. Have a good time there. Hopefully, you get your hands on whatever you want to
30:08
So it'll be great over there. Thank you. Thank you for joining us. Bye. Bye
30:13
My gosh, I'm just thinking about it. So let's see the alarm is going off. Can I just do that to stop it
30:18
Sure. This is the snooze. That's the Nintendo version. I just, yeah, the Duo Alarmo
30:26
What's weird, too, is that there are so many stands and chargers that will put your phone into standby mode
30:31
And that's the point where you'd be charging it. So it's more, it sounded more interesting that it works
30:36
even when it's not overnight. But yeah, I don't know. Maybe they were just trying to come up with another
30:41
I'm still interested in how much this is really going to feel like an iPad. And does this make the idea of the iPad feel obsolete
30:48
Or are they getting you into a one more device thing that like, oh, this is nice
30:52
But for the iPad, I still go to it for, I don't know, keyboard or whatever
30:56
I use the iPod keyboard, iPad keyboard. it a lot. So I kind of use it almost as a Mac, which obviously this is not, despite your Samsung
31:04
Dex streams, this is not going to be a computer for you in that regard. So maybe that's where the
31:13
line gets drawn here in the same way that the iPad gets close to a Mac, but then there's the
31:18
Mac, which does the other stuff. So it's this continuum of stuff that we're following
31:25
Timothy, before I let you go, I wanted to ask you, What did you think of the iPhone handoff feature that Apple talked about
31:33
This way you can have one phone number that can ring a second iPhone if you have one
31:37
which sounds like Apple's expecting you to have multiple iPhones. Yeah, I think it seems like tailor-made for people like us who are actively testing multiple phones at once
31:48
But I actually saw someone on the subway here in New York City last night using two phones at once
31:53
I think there are people who are doing that, or increasingly people who have a work phone and a personal phone
31:58
or maybe, you know, your family has multiple devices. So I think it's a cool sounding feature for sure
32:04
For me personally, it could be super helpful. I'm sure that's also the case for both of you
32:09
Again, will the average iPhone user really be taking advantage of this
32:13
I can't imagine people buying two $2,000 phones, you know, two $1,800 phones
32:21
But there are those people, they are out there. So who knows
32:25
that's what you need next is a duo that just then splits into two solos and then rejoins
32:30
back into the duo and then you you want to voltron there you go thank you bring back the Trifold Remember those Yeah Well we going to see a lot more stuff from Tim over at Mashable this time when we get
32:42
it right. Yes. Let's see what he's got to say. Thanks, guys. Thank you very much
32:46
Thank you. We're getting more live footage of the demo room there
32:50
We're seeing the sides of the iPhone Duo. Satisfyingly being closed. It's closed with a magnetic closure
32:58
obsessed with the graphic animation of the thing where it kind of feels like it's coming in from the
33:03
outside, the spatial effect they have. I am thinking about what you said too, is, you know
33:08
will they allow you customization of that outer screen? It seems quite doable. Like, I mean
33:14
you know, it seems like an easy thing you could set up in settings, but who knows if that's in
33:18
there in the 1.0. Yeah, this is the first gen. So like, I know I've been talking to friends who
33:23
I won't get a foldable until Apple does it. And I'm very curious to see if this satisfies their craving
33:31
because there's this version of Netflix that was a glimpse into the horrific future
33:36
where you can browse videos like TikTok, essentially. You can just do vertical videos
33:42
And if you want to watch the full video, it looks like you can just open it up. Is that a thing that's on other folding phones right now
33:49
that continuity where whatever you're looking on the outer part, you open it up and suddenly it's there
33:53
bigger? Yeah. So on the Samsung devices and the Google devices, they have this idea of how you
33:59
use it. If you're using your phone and you open it, the idea is you want to do something larger
34:04
But generally when you close it, it just goes into sleep mode because it goes black. So it's
34:10
not expecting you to continue. Now that's going to be something that's important because Samsung
34:14
lets you choose what continues to the front. You can choose to have everything continue to the front
34:20
Apple, I don't know what they're going to do. Like Apple likes to be really controlling
34:25
So I don't know. They do. They want you to go in a certain flow for their, it just works type of a thing
34:30
But granularity, I know. Right as they were talking, it was like that thing triggered a dust mode into my lung
34:37
The, yeah, whether, to get that granularity control would be great. I would want that
34:44
I don't even use a folding phone all the time. I think I'd want that, but we'll probably know more once everyone gets out of the demos and
34:50
briefings and gets more feedback on that. I kind of want one. I do too. I just want it for the
34:57
pencil. I know that sounds stupid, but I just want a foldable with a stylus that works. I love the
35:02
under display camera idea. It's on the Fold 6. This also had the same thing. You could draw on
35:06
the inside not on the outside And this is supposed to be the thinnest iPhone when open I don really care that it the thinnest iPhone when open because I don think I going to hold it in my pocket that way Bar got the iPhone Duo and we getting the selfie cam
35:20
This is the under display. Oh, this is the FaceTime camera. That's the camera that's, yeah, the front-facing one
35:26
Is it? No, that's the one on the inside. No, no, that's the... Which one is this
35:29
I think under the display. Yeah, yeah, that's what... I meant the inside like the inside, the under display camera
35:33
Sorry. Yeah, and then we're getting a sense of the whole Apple layout there
35:38
closing it up. Yeah, I mean, there's only so much you can see remotely
35:45
It looks nice, but I'm curious about how it feels, how that visceral click is
35:51
you know, how sturdy it all feels. They've got a lot of time too, because pre-orders don't start until October 13th
35:56
and it's not available until the 26th of October. So there's a whole month and a half
36:00
before this thing comes out. This is a late product, and it probably will dovetail
36:05
with what we expect will be another Apple event for Macs. So that will be kind of interesting
36:09
That's happened before, where Apple has announced a product at one event
36:13
and then it arrives right when the other event rolls in. And we're still expecting
36:18
not to skip past this event that we're still talking about, we're still expecting Macs within chips
36:21
There's maybe a new touchscreen Mac, there may be that HomePod or Apple TVs
36:27
but this might, yeah, this might kind of line up with a future Apple product release second shoe dropping thing
36:34
As everything was being introduced, Scott, You were just thinking, okay, this is how they're setting up the table
36:40
This is AI on glasses. Can you explain that to the audience of what you are seeing from, we saw awesome pieces of hardware, but you're seeing what's going to happen
36:50
I'm, yeah, I'm trying to think ahead to 2027. I know we're here in 2026, but I'm thinking about categories that I cover a lot, which are, yes, next-gen wearables, smart glasses, things like the future of vision as well, which I don't think Apple has stopped on vision
37:05
I think there will be a lot more stuff to come after a period of time
37:10
But what got my attention here were two things. One is the personal hub term, which they spent a lot of time at the beginning
37:20
Ternus came right in and defined the iPhone, which- Redefined, yeah. Redefined, which you do not need to do
37:27
We are very aware of what an iPhone is. Why spend that much time explaining what the iPhone is
37:34
And it's to not just set the table, I think, for the duo, but probably set the table for everything that they're doing
37:40
over the next couple of years, including Siri. Siri being an assistant in a home hub that also makes me think about the HomePod thing that might be coming in what is a hub And a hub is a thing that connects So sure the duo is a hub but it
37:55
also about what you're connecting to. And I think about the talk about glasses or an AI device or
38:01
AirPods with cameras. That goes to the second part, which is the introduction of recap and
38:09
And audio intelligence is fascinating to me because it is definitely, like Nina was saying
38:16
dipping the toes in to a feature. If they weren't ready to talk about cameras on AirPods now, they're doing that work with
38:23
audio intelligence. They're exploring the idea of information collection in a secure way that they're not
38:30
really collecting it or they're finding a way to privatize that. all the stuff that right now with meta everyone's getting outraged about about how private is this
38:41
are you sneaking photos of me and also how are those being handled um apple is trying to advance
38:48
some of the thoughts probably here in a space that is very wild west you have things like plod you
38:53
have a number of other ai devices i wear this looky camera thing um so it's like it's step by step but
39:00
But I think it does need to get solved because all these products, we are frogs in the pot
39:05
Where does it get comfortable? Where are the privacy rules of this
39:08
And heck, it's all gonna change everywhere. Like I feel like you're gonna have places that ban this stuff and then maybe allow it again
39:13
You also have accessibility considerations, which is meta leads on that heavily, but Apple does too
39:20
Where will it be an assisted device for people? You say you can't record
39:24
but it's helping somebody actually follow stuff. And then how do you tell them to turn that off
39:30
So lots of interesting questions. There's tons of questions, tons of products
39:34
And I want to thank everybody for watching and joining us today
39:38
because this was a heck of a presentation from Apple. Brand new products
39:42
We're going to have reviews, hands-ons, everything you could think of at CNET, Mashable, PCMag, Lifehacker, ZDNet
39:50
It's going to be there. Any last words? I'm curious how good it all is
39:56
And then what happens in October when this thing finally debuts? I can't wait to check it out
40:01
And then be some of those people down there checking it out. Yeah, if you've got questions, let us know, because we will be answering you
40:06
Yes. This has been Scott Stein. I've been IAZ Actar. And I'll see you online
40:11
Thank you for watching
