Welcome to Insights. This is Pastor John
0:04
and today we're going to be talking
0:06
about the anointing of God. It's
0:08
probably something that can be
0:10
misunderstood quite a bit. Um, and the
0:15
purpose of today is to give you a better
0:19
understanding of actually what the
0:21
anointing is. So in its
0:26
easiest way to understand, the anointing
0:29
is God's power
0:32
operating through an individual.
0:35
It's not the individual, it's God. And
0:39
when we look at things and and we're
0:41
looking through the scriptures and it
0:43
talks about different places, one of the
0:45
things I I always refer to when talking
0:49
about how the anointing works.
0:52
If you stop and read in Acts,
0:56
how as Peter would walk through the
0:59
town, the anointing had come to rest on
1:02
him in such a way that even his shadow
1:06
falling on someone would cause them to
1:09
be healed.
1:11
And what the anointing is is you've
1:14
prayed, you spend time in praise and
1:16
worship, the power of God is is present.
1:19
You know Jesus said, "Wherever two or
1:21
three are gathered together in my name,
1:23
there am I in the midst of them." So
1:26
when we gather together as believers,
1:29
we have access to God's power and the
1:33
anointing is there. And that anointing
1:35
is available to us because we've spent
1:38
time in his presence. We've spent time
1:41
in prayer and studying God's word and
1:44
seeking a closer relationship with God.
1:48
Now, some of the things the anointing
1:50
does is it's the Holy Spirit that draws
1:54
people to repentance. So, when the word
1:57
is preached
1:59
and the altar call is given where you
2:02
ask people if they would like to receive
2:05
Jesus as Lord and Savior, you have two
2:08
two things happen.
2:10
And uh
2:13
one is that the Holy Spirit will draw
2:16
someone in to receive Jesus for
2:18
salvation. And the person accepts it.
2:22
And when they do, it's the anointing
2:24
that brings God's grace to that person
2:28
and restores them their fellowship with
2:31
God. They become justified
2:35
and then they're sanctified and
2:37
restored.
2:39
And that's one operation in the very
2:42
beginning. That's what happens at first.
2:44
It's the anointing through the Holy
2:46
Spirit that draws people in to receive
2:48
salvation. The thing about the anointing
2:51
is you can stop it.
2:55
A lot of people say things to themselves
2:57
that these are believers. Why would I
2:59
want to stop the anointing of God when
3:01
it brings so much with it?
3:04
But
3:06
it's that same anointing
3:11
that raised Jesus from the dead. Paul
3:13
said in Romans this, the same spirit
3:17
which raised Jesus from the dead lives
3:20
in you. So that power is within you. You
3:23
have that same power that raised Christ
3:26
from the dead. It resides in you when
3:28
you accept Jesus. The thing that we have
3:31
trouble with is drawing it out. We're
3:34
we're we have trouble uh
3:38
accepting the fact that God loves us so
3:40
much that uh he's given us access to his
3:45
spirit in such a way that uh we can
3:50
touch other people for him. So he
3:53
operates through the people. So the
3:56
anointing is God's power flowing through
4:00
people. Now when you read about Jesus's
4:03
anointing, it says that he was anointed
4:05
in the fullness of God's power. And we
4:09
operate
4:11
in a more finite way. In other words, we
4:14
don't have as much of that anointing as
4:17
Christ did, but it's the same anointing.
4:20
It allows us to reach people and touch
4:23
people and set people free through the
4:27
operation and gifts of the Holy Spirit
4:29
that God has promised us in his word.
4:33
And when you do that for people,
4:36
they're set free. Freedom comes. That's
4:38
the purpose of that anointing is to
4:42
change people's lives. And you know
4:44
really and truly
4:47
when you look at people and they and
4:48
they do things to change their lives
4:51
unless there is some form or major
4:55
uh
4:57
event takes place that goes along with
5:00
this change they're trying to make. The
5:02
change doesn't stay permanent. But when
5:05
that change is brought about by the
5:07
anointing those per those those changes
5:09
remain permanent. They come to a place
5:12
where people will be set free and people
5:15
are healed and people are delivered. And
5:18
if you stop and think about people that
5:21
I remember this, I had a was preaching
5:24
one night and there was a man came into
5:27
the church and he was in the back and I
5:28
gave the altar call and he received
5:30
Jesus as Lord and Savior and the man was
5:33
an alcoholic and he came to the altar
5:35
and you could tell by looking at his
5:37
face that he was a very heavy user of
5:41
alcohol
5:42
and we laid hands on him and prayed for
5:45
him to receive salvation which he did
5:48
and that God would deliver him from the
5:52
bondage and addiction of alcohol. And he
5:55
began to cry
5:57
as the spirit of God was moving on him.
6:00
And as he wept and he wiped his face,
6:03
his countenance changed. And when he got
6:06
up from the altar, his mind was
6:09
completely cleared. Um the effects of
6:13
the ravaging of alcohol on his body had
6:15
been subsided. And the man continued to
6:18
come to church and he continued to go to
6:20
church until the day he died. And he
6:21
never drank alcohol again. God instantly
6:25
delivered him from the bondage of
6:27
alcohol at salvation. And there was a
6:31
physical
6:33
appearance
6:34
change of this man as the Holy Spirit
6:39
through the anointing began to minister
6:41
to this man and take care of his needs.
6:44
Now,
6:45
does that happen every time? No.
6:49
Uh, is it possible for it to happen
6:51
every time? Yes.
6:53
What makes the difference? The
6:54
anointing. How much anointing actually
6:58
this person was willing to receive at
7:00
the time. When I first got saved,
7:04
um, and I've shared this testimony many
7:06
times. When I first got saved, um, I had
7:11
I had a the closest thing I can describe
7:15
to it is a vision that I was falling
7:18
into this deep, dark, bottomless pit.
7:23
And and the devil was telling me, I I
7:26
have you and I'll never let you go. And
7:29
in the midst of that, I heard a still
7:32
small voice. And that voice said, "If
7:34
you cry out to me, I'll save you." And
7:38
the first time I heard it, I didn't know
7:40
if I actually heard it or not. But then
7:42
I heard it again. It says, "If you cry
7:45
out to me, I will save you." And I
7:50
passed out drunk and high. I was on both
7:53
alcohol and drugs. And I I said, "Jesus,
7:57
if you're real
8:00
and if you'll save me,
8:04
I will serve you for the rest of my
8:06
life."
8:08
I woke up instantly clean and sober and
8:12
I have never went back to it since. And
8:14
that was 41 years ago. So, I had a
8:17
supernatural experience with God that
8:20
delivered me from drugs and alcohol.
8:26
and I've never went back to it.
8:32
The anointing of God breaks every yoke
8:35
of bondage. It takes people to places
8:38
they never thought they could go. And
8:41
the important thing for you to remember
8:43
is that power
8:47
that delivered me from drugs and
8:49
alcohol. That power that delivered this
8:52
man from alcohol. And you could
8:54
literally see the physical changes in
8:57
him
8:59
as he wept before God
9:02
is alive and well today.
9:05
And we need to focus on fostering our
9:09
relationship with Christ to the place
9:12
where the anointing is flowing freely
9:15
through us for other people. God's not a
9:18
respector of persons. Any person he's
9:21
ever anointed in the past, he will
9:24
anoint you in the same way if it's
9:26
something you desire.
9:29
And that's one of the keys. You have to
9:31
be willing to surrender
9:35
yourself before Christ
9:38
for that anointing to flow through you
9:41
and its purpose is to help other people.
9:46
So when you go to church and they open
9:48
up the altar and it says anybody here
9:51
have a physical need would you like to
9:52
be prayed for? Then the the scripture
9:55
says, "If there's any sick among you,"
9:57
this is in James chapter 4 or five, "Is
10:00
there any sick among you, let them call
10:03
for the elders of the church, let them
10:05
be anointed with oil, and the prayer of
10:07
faith shall save the sick." Uh not save
10:10
the sick from sin, but save the sick
10:13
from the sickness.
10:15
And so, the power of the anointing in
10:18
our lives is for restoration.
10:22
uh and for
10:26
a deeper relationship with Christ. And
10:30
that anointing,
10:32
God gives it liberally.
10:35
I've had many instances in my lifetime
10:37
where the anointing would begin to flow
10:38
and people would get healed and these
10:41
and people would say, "Oh, you know, you
10:43
prayed for me and and and God healed
10:46
them." and they begin to look at people
10:50
who operate the anointing as they're set
10:54
aside specially for some special
10:56
purpose. And the fact is the Bible says
10:59
in J uh Matthew chapter 16
11:04
that these signs should follow them
11:06
which believe. They lay hands on the
11:07
sick and they shall recover. U it's not
11:13
that anyone has a very special anointing
11:15
over somebody else. It's that God is
11:18
using you to meet someone else's need.
11:21
That's the power and the purpose of the
11:23
anointing. Uh one of the greatest
11:25
stories in the Old Testament I think
11:27
about when I think about that is Elijah
11:30
and uh the woman and the cruise of oil
11:34
and and a handful of milk uh flour.
11:41
And for 18 months, this woman, a widow,
11:45
her son
11:48
and Elijah
11:50
through God's power
11:54
were fed for 18 months. And then God
11:57
took it and showed it even greater
11:59
because at the end of that time
12:04
Elijah tells the widow, "Get every ve v
12:07
vessel you can find and continue to pour
12:11
the oil out of that cruise
12:14
and until you and as long as you have
12:16
vessels to pour it into, the oil will
12:18
not fail." and she poured enough oil
12:24
that it put her into a place of
12:27
financial success. She built a room
12:30
special for Elijah.
12:33
Uh she went from being in a state of
12:36
famine and ready to die to a place of
12:42
uh
12:46
where she lacked for nothing.
12:50
because of the anointing.
12:52
And then when you read through Elijah's
12:54
life and he's getting ready to be taken
12:57
up, he tells Elisha,
13:01
"If you see me go,
13:05
God will grant you the double portion
13:07
anointing that you asked for." Now, I've
13:10
had I've been prayed for twice in my
13:11
life where someone has prayed for me to
13:16
have the double portion of the
13:17
anointing. And when you read through
13:20
that, uh, you're talking about being
13:22
able to operate in an area that's not
13:27
natural. It's supernatural. I've walked
13:29
into churches and I've had the Holy
13:31
Spirit showed me what was wrong with
13:34
different people. And I've been able to
13:36
pray for them and they were were
13:39
delivered from it. And they received
13:41
restoration.
13:43
And all because not because I'm special.
13:46
I'm not. But because I was operating in
13:48
this place of anointing that God wants
13:50
all his people to operate in. Remember,
13:53
he's not a respector of persons. If he
13:56
will do it for one, he'll do it for you.
13:59
He doesn't make any distinction. If he
14:02
put that anointing on, if he's put it on
14:04
one person,
14:07
it means it's available to you. And
14:10
whether or not you get it is up to you.
14:13
It's not up to God. He already gave it
14:14
to you. When Jesus was hanging on the
14:17
cross and he said, "It is finished,"
14:20
everything you needed was provided at
14:22
that point. When Jesus said, "It is
14:23
finished," it was all complete.
14:26
When he rose from the dead and the Holy
14:30
Spirit was poured out on the day of
14:31
Pentecost, he empowered that promise of
14:34
it is finished and the church was born.
14:38
And what happened that day? people went
14:40
out and they testified to the goodness
14:42
of God and people got saved.
14:46
And then the very next event that
14:50
happens is Peter and John are on their
14:52
way into the temple and the man begging
14:54
alms is laying there and he says, you
14:57
know, he's asking for money and Peter
15:00
looks at him
15:05
and him and John are together and he
15:08
says,
15:09
"Look at us." So he got the man's
15:12
attention. And then Peter says, "Silver
15:14
and gold have I none, but such as I
15:16
have, I give unto you.
15:19
Rise up in the name of Jesus Christ of
15:21
Nazareth and walk."
15:24
And when Peter reached out and grabbed
15:26
his hand, instantly he was restored. And
15:29
he rose up and he went into the temple
15:32
and he was leaping and he was shouting
15:34
and he was praising God right in the
15:37
temple. And people were astonished
15:39
because the only other person who had
15:41
ever healed people like this was Jesus.
15:45
Yet here's Peter and John going into the
15:48
temple and they performed the same kind
15:50
of miracle. And then after that, people
15:53
were getting healed and people were
15:55
receiving salvation. And then Peter
15:58
would begin to go through the towns and
15:59
wherever his shadow fell on people that
16:01
were sick, they would get healed. And so
16:10
It's completely and entirely possible
16:13
for you as a believer
16:16
to walk in that place.
16:19
God's not a respector of persons. It
16:21
doesn't matter whether you're a man or a
16:23
woman. None of that matters. What
16:25
matters is how closely you're you are
16:29
working on your relationship with
16:31
Christ. Um, the anointing doesn't
16:35
doesn't come by chance.
16:39
Uh, in the Old Testament it did, but not
16:42
in the New Testament because he made it
16:44
available to everybody. I I stop and
16:47
think about this one. I think about a
16:48
lot. A lot of people that are Christians
16:52
like to live their Christian life like
16:54
Samson. They like to go out and play
16:57
with the world and then come back and
16:59
see if they can still touch God.
17:01
because you'll read through Samson's
17:03
life and he would do these stupid things
17:06
and then he would go out and shake
17:08
himself to see if if the power of God
17:10
had left him. Uh
17:13
God doesn't want you to be a Samson.
17:16
He wants you to be a Samuel.
17:18
Samuel had a great anointing as well.
17:20
Everywhere he went, the power of God
17:22
went with him. And that's what God wants
17:26
from you. He wants you to be walking in
17:29
a place where the anointing is flowing
17:32
through you. Not hit and miss, but every
17:35
time that you go in someplace, the
17:37
anointing is available through you to
17:39
touch people that you're keeping your
17:42
relationship that close to God. It's
17:45
hard at times. Uh it takes a lot of
17:47
dedication on your part. You've got to
17:50
spend time in prayer. I I use this
17:52
analogy a lot. And your relationship
17:55
with Christ is like a relationship with
17:58
a husband and wife. If a husband and
18:00
wife are married and they never talk to
18:02
each other, they don't actually have a
18:05
relationship. They're just roommates.
18:08
But when a husband and wife are truly a
18:10
husband and wife, they have a
18:12
relationship. They have a close intimate
18:14
relationship. They talk they talk to
18:17
each other.
18:20
Uh they pray for each other. They lift
18:22
each other up.
18:24
They're there to support each other.
18:27
That's the kind of relationship that God
18:29
seeks with you. That close intimate
18:31
relationship. He gave you a pattern to
18:34
understand your relationship with him.
18:37
And it's the same as a marriage
18:39
relationship between a husband and a
18:41
wife. So if you want that powerful
18:44
anointing flowing in your life and you
18:47
want to reach people and change their
18:48
lives, then you're going to have to
18:51
spend time in prayer. You're going to
18:53
have to spend time in God's word. You're
18:55
going to have to seek
18:58
God and his anointing to change your
19:01
life. So, I want to encourage you.
19:06
Read those Bible stories for what they
19:08
are.
19:10
See what the people did
19:14
to have the anointing they had. Find out
19:17
what you need to do to touch people for
19:21
God. and then pursue it.
19:24
Uh it doesn't make you weird or anything
19:27
else. And uh if you're married, you
19:29
know, it's something that as a husband
19:31
and wife you could do together like
19:33
Priscilla and Aquilla
19:35
uh in in the book of Acts. Uh they
19:38
ministered with Paul and in many places.
19:41
Uh they spent time together uh making
19:44
tents
19:46
and they were they were excellent Bible
19:48
teachers, but they did it together.
19:50
Aquilla and Priscilla. Now, if you're
19:53
like Paul and or in my case like me,
19:56
you're not married, you're single. Um,
19:59
then the person that you're creating
20:01
that relationship directly with is God.
20:05
The anointing is available for you
20:06
anytime you want it. The anointing is
20:09
available to you to reach other people.
20:12
It has a purpose. That purpose is to for
20:15
restoration, reconciliation,
20:18
justification through the grace of God.
20:21
God uses people
20:25
and you're one of his people.
20:28
Think about that. Focus on the
20:31
anointing. Ask God, "How can I have more
20:34
anointing? What can I do to reach more
20:36
people? And as I reach more people, help
20:40
me Lord to remember that those are your
20:42
children. Those are your people. And
20:46
that is who you want reached with the
20:49
gospel of Jesus Christ. I'll see you
20:52
guys next week. And remember, you can do
20:54
all things through Christ who
20:55
strengthens you.
