Welcome back to our study of the book of John. We'll continue with chapter 5 today and give our attention to verses 6- 8. Last week , we talked about the nature and characteristics of those that have been adopted as children of God. And we said that to be qualified as a child of God requires a person to be indwelled by the Spirit of God in accordance with the Scriptures. We also talked about how obeying and being a doer of the word of God shows that we love other brothers and sisters in Christ. In today's presentation John is going to show why the Jesus that he has been preaching is the only and true Son of God, begotten of the Father , not made.

guys welcome back to our study of the
0:01
book of first john
0:03
and last week we did um first john
0:05
chapter five
0:06
verses one through five and today uh
0:08
we're going to be doing
0:10
uh chapter five again but verses six and
0:13
eight
0:13
six through it i talked about that last
0:16
week i wanted to do it but i felt like
0:18
this um these two these verses deserve
0:21
a whole um um presentation themselves
0:24
because there's a lot of stuff there
0:26
that i don't want to just
0:27
uh just scheme through i want to really
0:30
take my time to
0:31
to look at it and to look at it
0:33
profoundly and to look at it with
0:34
all the details that are involved with
0:36
it now last week we talked about what he
0:38
meant
0:39
to be a child of god and we say that a
0:40
child of god will have no
0:42
problem accepting that jesus is indeed
0:45
the son of god
0:46
because john says that whoever has been
0:48
born of god
0:49
will accept that statement about jesus
0:52
we also talked about
0:53
how as a child of god how do we show
0:56
love
0:57
for one another is by obeying the word
0:59
of god and by doing the word of god so
1:01
basically
1:02
my obedience to the word of god shows
1:04
that i love you
1:05
if you're a brother or sister in christ
1:06
so the way i show you love is by obeying
1:08
god's word so
1:10
by being uh righteous by
1:13
always upholding the righteousness of
1:15
god in my in the way i live my life
1:18
this is our show that i love you as a
1:20
brother or sister in christ
1:22
and then we talked about how that was so
1:25
important and because we said that
1:27
whoever has been born of god overcomes
1:30
and we overcome
1:31
because of our faith and we say that god
1:33
is the one
1:34
that gave us that faith because faith
1:36
comes by hearing
1:37
him by the word of god so god is the one
1:39
that initiates the faith in us he's the
1:41
one that wields it in us
1:43
so we take no credit for it and because
1:45
god is the author
1:46
of our faith we will always overcome
1:49
because the spirit that lives in us is
1:51
the same spirit that are operated
1:52
within jesus himself so because of that
1:56
we will overcome because we are children
1:58
of god born of the spirit of god himself
2:00
so now we're going to talk about verses
2:02
6 through 8. now these verses
2:04
again uh when i approach these verses i
2:07
approach them with
2:08
extreme caution because i don't want to
2:10
say anything that's not consistent with
2:12
scripture
2:12
so i really had to go back and dig a
2:14
little bit more to understand what john
2:16
was saying here
2:17
so i'm just going to read verses 6
2:18
through 8 and we're going to
2:20
talk about it and we're going to analyze
2:22
what the scripture is saying here
2:24
now in verses 6 through 8 uh this is
2:26
what the scripture says
2:27
let's get that now first john chapter 5
2:30
verses 6 through 8. now this is he
2:34
who came by water and blood jesus christ
2:37
not by the water only but by the water
2:39
and the blood
2:40
and the spirit is the one who testifies
2:43
because
2:44
the spirit is the truth for there are
2:46
three
2:47
that testify the spirit and the water
2:50
and the blood and these three agree
2:53
and that's where we're gonna stop this
2:55
is the word of god so now let's
2:56
understand
2:57
what john is saying here so basically
3:01
john says that this is he who came by
3:02
water and blood
3:04
jesus christ not by the water only but
3:06
by the water and the blood
3:08
and the spirit is the one who testifies
3:10
because the spirit is the truth
3:12
now john is saying that this the jesus i
3:15
am referring to in verse 5
3:17
is the jesus who came by water and by
3:20
blood
3:20
and we need to understand what this mean
3:22
with the water and the blood
3:24
but before we do that we're going to
3:25
address what john was up against
3:28
in his time there was a teacher named
3:30
ceranthus who was a gnostic teacher
3:33
and he was espousing some pretty bad bad
3:36
bad bad stuff
3:38
he basically said that the spirit of
3:39
christ descended upon jesus at his
3:42
baptism
3:43
and that he left just before his death
3:45
so basically he was saying that jesus
3:47
was not god
3:48
prior to his baptism and that before he
3:50
died the spirit of god
3:52
had left him so cyrentis was probably
3:56
saying this because he wanted to defend
3:58
the fact that god cannot die
4:00
god cannot die so this is the background
4:02
that we have okay
4:03
so again to sum it up surrenders
4:05
believed that jesus
4:06
was not god until the baptism and he
4:09
also says that
4:10
before he went to the cross the spirit
4:13
of god left him
4:14
so basically he treats jesus as just a
4:16
mere man
4:17
that he is not the son of god okay so
4:20
that's how he
4:21
he's treating jesus but we know from
4:23
scripture in isaiah 6
4:25
that the virgin shall conceive a child
4:27
and he shall be called
4:28
uh emmanuel which means god with us and
4:31
we know how the conception of jesus came
4:33
by
4:34
uh she was overshadowed by the holy
4:37
spirit and then
4:38
jesus is not born like we we were born
4:40
not from a man's
4:42
and in a woman having some kind of
4:44
intimate relationship together no he was
4:45
born of the spirit
4:46
i was touching his humanity and i want
4:48
to make sure i make that distinction
4:50
the scripture says the fl the word
4:52
became flesh
4:53
okay so jesus existed for all eternity
4:55
with the father if you go back to john 1
4:58
verse 1 the prologue scripture says in
5:00
the beginning was the word
5:02
and the word was with god and the word
5:04
was
5:05
god so jesus existed for all eternity so
5:08
what happened
5:09
when he came as a human is the word
5:11
became flesh so
5:12
there was an addition the human was
5:14
added to the
5:16
uh trinity okay so i wanted to make sure
5:18
that we understand that at the outset
5:20
now let's go and understand what john is
5:22
saying so
5:23
when john mentioned on the water and the
5:25
blood we believe that he was referring
5:27
to
5:28
the beginning of jesus earthly ministry
5:30
and the completion of his ministry when
5:32
he died on the cross
5:33
so if you go to the to matthew 3 verse
5:36
13 to 17 we're going to read about
5:38
the baptism and that's important so
5:39
let's do that
5:41
matthew 3 verse 13 to 17 let's see what
5:43
happened
5:44
then jesus came from galilee to the
5:46
jordan to john
5:48
to be baptized by him john would have
5:50
prevented him saying
5:52
i need to be baptized by you and you
5:55
come to me
5:56
but jesus answered him let it be so now
5:59
for thus
6:00
it is fitting for us to fulfill all
6:02
righteousness
6:04
then he consented and when jesus was
6:06
baptized
6:07
immediately he went up from the water
6:09
and behold
6:10
the heavens were opened to him and he
6:13
saw the spirit of god
6:14
descending like a dove and coming to
6:17
rest on him
6:18
and behold a voice from heaven said this
6:21
is my beloved son with whom i am well
6:23
pleased again this is the word of god so
6:26
what do we take
6:27
from all these now there are several
6:29
elements in that account that we need to
6:31
look at
6:32
okay when the dove appeared and rested
6:34
upon jesus
6:35
it was to confirm his identity okay the
6:38
holy spirit was saying to the watching
6:40
world that this indeed
6:42
is the son of god it was not the only
6:45
confirmation we have we also have the
6:46
voice of god the father
6:48
who bore witness by saying this is my
6:50
beloved son with whom i'm well pleased
6:52
okay and john the baptist himself
6:55
testifies if you go to john 1 verse 32
6:57
to 34 scripture says
6:59
and john paul witness i saw the spirit
7:01
descend from heaven like a dove
7:04
and he remained on him i myself did not
7:06
know him but he who sent me to baptize
7:08
with water
7:10
said to me he on whom you see the spirit
7:12
the sand
7:13
and remain this is he who baptizes with
7:16
the holy spirit and i have seen and i've
7:18
borne witness that this is the son of
7:20
god
7:21
if you guys know john john was a prophet
7:23
so his words
7:24
mean a lot now the apostle john was
7:27
telling his readers and us that jesus
7:29
didn't
7:30
gain the god's status the day he was
7:32
baptized that's not when he gained the
7:34
god's status
7:35
it was more to confirm his identity when
7:37
the dove came and rested upon him he was
7:39
confirmed that this is indeed the son of
7:41
god so
7:42
so john said that jesus didn't just come
7:44
by water okay
7:45
so again get this again i want to say
7:48
one more time
7:49
on the baptism when the spirit came and
7:52
wrestled upon jesus
7:54
it wasn't to that's that's not when he
7:57
gained his
7:58
god status because he we already know
7:59
from the beginning that he's always been
8:01
god from all eternity
8:03
okay that's just to confirm his identity
8:05
a sign to confirm his identity and to
8:07
anoint him for public ministry
8:09
so that's the one thing now when he
8:11
talks about the blood what does it mean
8:13
the blood points to the completion of
8:15
his ministry on the cross if you go to
8:17
matthew 27 verse 45 to 54
8:20
there's like a series of event that took
8:22
place that confirmed that jesus is the
8:24
only son of god and we're going to read
8:26
that let's go to matthew 27
8:28
verse 45 to 44 54. now
8:31
from the sixth hour there was darkness
8:34
over all the land
8:36
number one darkness over all the land
8:38
until the ninth hour
8:40
and about the ninth hour jesus cried out
8:42
with a loud voice
8:44
saying eli eli lama
8:49
sabachthani sabatoni
8:53
that is my god my god why have you
8:55
forsaken me
8:57
and some of the bystanders hearing it
8:59
said this man is calling elijah
9:02
and one of them at once ran and took a
9:04
sponge filled it with sour wine and put
9:06
it on a reed and gave it to him to drink
9:09
but the others said wait let us see
9:12
whether elijah would come to save him
9:14
and jesus cried
9:15
out again with a loud voice and yielded
9:18
up his spirit
9:19
and behold the curtain of the temple was
9:21
torn in two
9:23
from top to bottom pay attention from
9:26
top to bottom
9:27
second sign and the earth shook and the
9:30
rocks were split
9:31
and the tombs were also were opened and
9:33
many bodies of the saints who are
9:35
falling asleep were raised
9:38
and coming out of the tombs after his
9:40
resurrection they went into the holy
9:42
city
9:42
and appeared to many three okay when the
9:46
centurion
9:46
and those who were with him keeping
9:49
watch over jesus
9:50
saw the earthquake and what took place
9:52
they were filled with all
9:54
and said truly this was the son of god
9:57
four now here's the thing
10:00
i could stop here and that'll be
10:01
sufficient but i want to give you more
10:03
if you go to isaiah 53
10:05
isaiah 53 talks about the suffering
10:07
servant that he was going to die
10:10
for the sins of the world that because
10:12
of him we were made righteous
10:13
by his wounds we are healed okay
10:17
isaiah 53 talks about that i you know
10:20
what let me actually go to isaiah 53 and
10:22
let's read it
10:23
because the the death on the cross
10:27
and the work of god through jesus
10:31
was proven listen to this who has
10:33
believed
10:34
what he has heard from us and to whom
10:37
has the arm of the lord been revealed
10:39
for he grew up before him like a young
10:41
plant and like a root out of the dry
10:43
ground
10:44
he had no form of or majesty that we
10:46
should look at him
10:47
and no beauty that we should desire him
10:49
he was despised and rejected by man a
10:52
man of sorrows and acquainted with grief
10:54
and as one from whom men hide their
10:57
faces he was despised and
10:59
we esteemed him not surely he has borne
11:02
our griefs
11:03
and carried our sorrows yet we esteem
11:06
him stricken
11:07
smitten by god and afflicted but he was
11:09
pierced for us transgressions
11:12
he was crushed for our iniquities upon
11:14
him was the child talisman that brought
11:16
us peace
11:17
and with his wounds we are healed and
11:19
all like we
11:20
like sheep have gone astray we have
11:22
turned
11:23
everyone to his own way and the lord has
11:26
laid on him
11:28
the iniquity of us
11:31
all he was oppressed and he was
11:33
afflicted and yet he opened not his
11:35
mouth
11:36
like a lamb that is led to the slaughter
11:38
and like he's shaped up before his
11:40
sheriff's is silent
11:41
so he opened not his mouth by oppression
11:44
and judgment he was taken away
11:46
and as for his generation who considers
11:48
who considered that he was cut off out
11:50
of the land of the living
11:52
stricken for the transgression of my
11:54
people and they made his grave with the
11:56
wicked
11:57
and with a rich man in his death this is
11:59
incredible accuracy
12:00
okay although he had done no violence
12:03
and there was no deceit in his mouth
12:05
yet it was the will of the lord to crush
12:07
him he has put him to grief
12:09
when his soul makes an offering for
12:11
guilt he shall see his offering and he
12:14
shall prolong his days
12:15
the will of the lord shall prosper in
12:18
his hand
12:19
out of the anguish of his soul he shall
12:22
see
12:22
and be satisfied by his knowledge
12:26
shall the righteous one my servant make
12:28
many to be accounted
12:29
righteous they shall bear their
12:32
iniquities
12:33
therefore i will divide him a portion
12:35
with the many and he shall divide the
12:37
spoil with the strong
12:38
because he poured out his soul to death
12:41
and was numbered with the transgressors
12:43
yet he bought the scene of many and
12:44
makes intercessions for the
12:46
transgressors
12:47
now you can see all the details here and
12:49
i i don't need to be
12:50
elaborate on it you see exactly what
12:52
this is pointing to the completion of
12:54
his ministry and how
12:55
his death brought us peace with god he
12:58
was the perfect atonement
12:59
okay if you go to romans one verse one
13:01
through six listen to the scripture
13:04
paul is servant of christ jesus called
13:06
to be an apostle to set apart for the
13:08
gospel of god
13:09
which he promised beforehand through his
13:12
holy prophet
13:13
in the holy scriptures concerning his
13:15
son who was descended from
13:17
david according to the flesh meaning
13:20
according to his
13:21
humanity and was declared to be the son
13:23
of god in
13:24
power according to the spirit of
13:26
holiness by his resurrection from the
13:29
dead
13:29
jesus christ our lord through whom
13:33
we have received grace and apostleship
13:35
to bring about the obedience of faith
13:37
for the sake of his name among all the
13:39
nations including you
13:41
who are called to belong to jesus christ
13:44
so the proof is right there
13:45
so uh his death paid a penalty for our
13:49
sins and we can even look at romans 1
13:50
which we just did now
13:52
which test which testifies about the
13:54
deity of christ
13:55
so jesus never lost his divine attribute
13:58
at any given time but we must make
14:00
distinction between
14:02
his natures okay his dual nature when
14:05
jesus died on the cross
14:06
that was touching his humanity the
14:08
spirit of god was attached
14:10
to a dead corpse so what john was saying
14:13
here is this
14:14
the jesus i'm preaching to you is the
14:15
true christ and anyone who believes in
14:17
this jesus
14:18
has been born of god and he gives the
14:20
evidence for it
14:21
he talks about the baptism he talks
14:23
about his uh his death on the cross he's
14:25
talk he talks about
14:26
how the spirit descend upon him like a
14:28
dove to confirm his identity
14:30
the voice of god himself and then john
14:32
the baptist himself so
14:34
all these elements prove that jesus is
14:37
indeed
14:37
the son of god so if you want to take
14:39
anything away from this is this
14:42
jesus did not gain the god status on the
14:45
day
14:45
he was baptized that's not what happened
14:47
he was to confirm his identity and to
14:49
anoint him for ministry
14:50
two when he died on the cross that was
14:52
touching his humanity because god cannot
14:54
die
14:55
but god the man must have must die
14:58
because he
14:58
is the only one that can make the
15:00
atonement for our sins okay because
15:02
we are alienated from god so somebody
15:05
has to reach out to god
15:06
and we can reach out to god by god and
15:08
then somebody has to reach out to men
15:10
but who can reach out to man but man
15:12
in the sense that he is the perfect
15:13
bridge between us
15:15
and god so therefore he has to relate to
15:17
us by the same time he is god
15:19
okay so this is this is this is not a
15:22
truth that is easy for me to explain
15:24
so but i hope that what you can take
15:26
away from this is this that jesus
15:28
in the jesus that john is preaching is
15:30
the true son of god
15:32
god of god okay he was begun by the
15:34
father not made but begotten by the
15:36
father
15:37
okay the firstborn over all creation he
15:40
has supremacy because jesus himself says
15:42
in john 8 58 before abraham was i
15:46
am so jesus is god
15:49
okay so there is uh he existed for all
15:52
eternity so he never
15:54
lost his god status because he's always
15:56
god
15:57
all right so this is the jesus that john
16:00
is preaching about
16:01
so there's a there's a lot of people
16:02
that that claim they believe in just
16:04
jesus but then when you listen to
16:06
what they say about jesus like
16:08
especially like
16:10
the jehovah witnesses they claim that
16:11
jesus was actually
16:13
the first to be created jesus was never
16:15
created because he
16:16
is he himself says i am i am means that
16:20
he never had a beginning know our name
16:21
he's always been there
16:23
okay he's the he's of the same substance
16:26
that the father
16:27
as the father so this is what jesus is
16:29
saying about himself so when somebody
16:30
else comes there
16:31
and says something that is not
16:33
consistent with scripture we have to
16:34
refute it i don't care how nice they are
16:37
we have to tell the truth
16:38
and this is what john is doing here he
16:40
is showing us that this jesus that i'm
16:42
preaching
16:42
is the christ and he is the son of god
16:45
all right so i hope that this is what
16:46
you take away from today's
16:48
presentation have a wonderful day and
16:50
i'll see you next time thank you
