I was on my way to my local mall this morning for some sneaker scouting, and while driving and praying, I was led to John 13:13-14 where Jesus says to Peter and the rest of the Disciples, 13 You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. 14 If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. I read this passage several times and I don't think I quite understood what the Lord was teaching the disciples until today. I don't claim to have fully grasped the Lord's message in that context but the little that was revealed to me by His grace is what I'm sharing in the video above Visit: http://tayibs.com/ for more info

Hey, good afternoon, guys, this is Taib again
0:03
And I guess this morning I was driving and I was praying
0:07
I was led to John chapter 13, verse 13 and 14. And as I was looking at the passage, you know, I felt like the Lord impressed one thing on my heart that I wanted to spend with you
0:20
that I wanted to share with you guys. And it's important to really understand these things because we just need to know
0:30
what God really want us to understand in order to live in a way that is pleasing to him
0:35
And again, this is not something that I claim to know. But I hope that as you read this, what I'm going to present to you
0:43
you're going to be led to read and dig into scriptures and ask God himself to open your mind
0:48
so you can understand his word better, to live an effective and fruitful life
0:52
Because at the end of the day, it's about producing fruit and glorifying God in the process
0:58
all right so I'm going to show you the passage and we're going to go from there
1:02
now in John 13 verse 13 and 14 we need to understand what the Lord was
1:08
teaching and he says that if you call me teacher and Lord and you are right
1:12
actually says you call me teacher and Lord and you are right for so I am
1:17
if I then your Lord and teacher have washed your feet you also ought to wash one
1:23
another's feet and like I say I don't want to make this too complicated because
1:28
We are never to do that as believers. And I'm convinced that the main lesson the Lord was trying to teach here was correction through love and humility
1:35
What do I mean by correction through love and humility? I'll get to that. I say, why am I saying that
1:40
And we're going to look at the context of the passage and the disciples' attitude prior to the resurrection
1:45
Okay? We're going to look at that for a second. Now, Scripture says, then, and this is John chapter 13, okay, verse 5 to like 10
1:55
then he poured water into a basin or basin and began to wash the disciples feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him and he came to simon peter who said to him lord do you wash my feet
2:10
and jesus answered him what i doing now you don understand but afterward you will understand and Peter said to Jesus you shall never wash my feet and Jesus answered him if I do not wash you you have no share with me
2:27
and Simon Peter said to him Lord not my feet only but also my hands and my head and Jesus said to him the one who has bathed does not need to wash except for his feet but is completely clean and you are clean but not every one of you
2:41
it was referencing Judas in the process. So this is right before Jesus goes to the cross, right
2:47
And this takes place there. So let's understand the disciples' attitude before the resurrection
2:53
Okay. Now I highlighted some words that I wanted to talk about, the phrases
2:58
And Peter said, Lord, do you wash my feet? And the implication here is I don't want to submit to a Lord that washes other people's feet
3:06
And ladies and gentlemen, that's the way of the world. Like, we want to serve a leader that's like flashy
3:11
you know people don't want to submit so to peter that was like a contract he's thinking if you are
3:16
god why you wash my feet that's the role of a servant so again that's the way of the world
3:23
that kind of thought process and a lot of us are like that okay and then the next thing that i
3:27
highlighted was you shall never wash my feet and peter just couldn't reconcile the idea of
3:32
jesus being lord and at the same time taking on the role of a slave or a servant and peter's
3:38
attitude at the time was common to all mankind under the flesh the old nature and the carnal mind thinks that way like if jesus is lord why is he washing my feet
3:46
and that's what peter was thinking i'm assuming and then we're going to and the next thing that i
3:52
highlighted was if i do not wash you you have no share with me and that's jesus speaking so jesus
3:57
completely shadows peter's understanding of how things work in the kingdom of god with that statement
4:03
that he made in god's economy god always gives grace to the humble to the humble and resist the proud
4:10
and that's one thing that Jesus was trying to teach Peter okay and continued here
4:17
and Simon Peter said to him Lord not my feet only but also my hands and my head
4:21
Jesus said to him the one who has bathed does not need to wash except for his feet
4:26
but it completely clean and you are clean but not every one of you now Peter still didn understand what Jesus was doing still He thought this had to do with being claimed I assumed But Jesus explained to him that he I mean Peter was already claimed meaning a child of God
4:42
Peter was already a child of God. God already chosen Peter. And what he Peter lacked was humility
4:48
And now we can fully understand the passage. We're going to get to that in the next point. Now Psalm 109-19-105 says, your word is a limb to my feet and a light to my path
4:59
right now it's an important song because we walk with our feet and we are told by paul the apostle to watch how we walk
5:06
walk in the light right walk in the light walk by the spirit of god so washed feet are synonymous with walking in the light
5:15
basically so because we need god desperately every day we get up in the morning even to move your finger god has to authorize that
5:23
okay so because as children of the light or children of god we still live in a fallen world and
5:29
we have to live in this world but not be of the world. And there are temptations everywhere
5:34
So if my brother and sister in Christ is falling into temptation, my job is to correct her in humility or correct him in humility and not pride
5:43
And this is what Jesus was teaching the disciples. Because we are so quick once we grow in the spirit
5:49
We've been working with God for a long time. We think we have the right to judge other people in such a way that's so condescending
5:57
and that's what Jesus was trying to teach the disciples. We'll get to that in the next slide
6:02
Jesus was saying to the disciple, I am Jesus and I am perfect because I am God
6:08
And everything I say is right. So if anyone has the right to correct other people
6:12
it will be me. Jesus because I'm perfect. That's what Jesus was saying to them
6:17
And even I, meaning Jesus, when I correct you, I do so in humility in the flesh, right
6:22
Because he was in the flesh to show you how you should correct one another. So this passage
6:27
us to totally depend on God for everything even when it comes to correcting other people
6:32
there is never a time when we should assume the role of a no at all and the disciples
6:37
were going to be handed the key of the kingdom and the Lord wanted them to remember
6:41
you are who you are only by the grace of God and Jesus never wanted those people to forget that because forgetting that would lead to pride and condemnation because you see the thing is this when you grow in Christ then you become somebody in the eyes of
6:56
people the temptation is to think you can kind of pronounce judgment on other people
7:00
because you've been around the block and God knew in Jesus that the disciples were
7:07
going to be soon given the keys to the kingdom and there could be temptation to say
7:13
we have been with Jesus we know everything so when we tell you to do this you do this way because
7:19
we know it all so he was trying to teach them just because I chose you
7:23
don't you think that you should ever assume to be a know it all because you are
7:28
who you are only by my grace so grace humility and trusting
7:36
God is key to walking in victory we can never think we can do it in our strength because
7:42
that's when problems happen when we begin to act as if we are correcting somebody because we have the right because we are better now it's because God has endured us with their authority so the authority comes from God and when we correct someone it has to be in humility meaning independence of God on God and then you can glorify God because if you ever do it to promote ourselves that's bad and that's what Jesus was trying to teach be humble meaning depend totally on God all right
8:12
Remember the disciples when somebody was casting out demons and they said to Jesus
8:17
we heard someone casting our demons in your name and we told him to stop. And Jesus told them, don't do that
8:23
Whoever is not against me is with me. For me. So that's that tendency to trying to think we don't wash other people's feet
8:31
So washing his feet is watch our brothers in Christ. We need to take care of one another
8:35
So if somebody is falling into temptation or sin, it's my job if I'm called by God to go and correct him
8:41
but in humility meaning in total dependence on God so I should never go there and trying to use my own words or my own cleverness but I have to do it by God's enabling me to do so it has to be a work of God so that God can get the glory I should never get the glory all right hopefully this helps you guys out again have a nice evening and let me know what you think okay thank you guys
