0:06
hi everyone I'm Kelly O'Horo and this is
0:09
Adaptable Behavior Explained hi there
0:13
thanks for joining us today on Adaptable
0:15
i'm Kelly O'Horo your host and I want to
0:18
share with you on our episode today um
0:21
about a book that was presented to me by
0:23
a friend of mine and he said "You're
0:26
going to love this it's right up your
0:27
alley and it has really changed the way
0:30
that I run my business it's changed the
0:32
way that I make decisions on the
0:34
day-to-day and it it's really changed
0:36
the way that we have run our hiring
0:38
process so the book that we're going to
0:40
talk about today is The Big Five for
0:42
Life it's by John Straki and it's a bit
0:44
of a parable in that uh you don't know
0:47
that it's not a true story sort of until
0:49
the end um but it's uh it's such a good
0:53
uh example about how to organize your
0:55
life and I think that so many of us are
0:58
really living just on autopilot you know
1:02
think about from the time I get up I go
1:04
through the motions I make my plans and
1:07
I don't necessarily have a goal for the
1:09
things that I'm doing each day and I
1:11
haven't had a lot of purpose so when I
1:14
think about how do I organize this we
1:16
have to slow ourselves down and this
1:18
book helps us to determine a couple of
1:20
things it helps us to determine if we
1:23
want to look into it and and do the
1:24
activities in the book our purpose for
1:26
existence which sounds so heady and our
1:30
big five for life and so the examples
1:33
that they talk about in this book are
1:35
based on the metaphor of walking through
1:37
the museum of your life and so when when
1:41
he talks about it he says you know we
1:42
spend our time every single day doing
1:45
things kind of monotonous monotonously
1:48
or mindlessly and if you narrow down
1:51
what you want to be doing and and the
1:54
things that are going to be important in
1:55
the museum of your life it helps you to
1:57
clean up what it is you're going to um
1:59
focus your time and energy on and so
2:02
basically if I were saying that my for
2:06
example my purpose for existence is to
2:09
serve humankind i know that I'm here to
2:11
be of service to help people through
2:13
their trials and tribulations it's what
2:15
prompted me to become a teacher it's
2:17
what prompted me to recareer in my early
2:19
30s to become a mental health specialist
2:22
i knew that I had more in me to help
2:24
it's part of what prompted me to adopt
2:26
children when I was really young that
2:28
were my husbands and stick it out to
2:30
raise them i knew that I could offer
2:32
them something that they wouldn't have
2:33
otherwise had if I wasn't in their life
2:35
and so when I think about my personal
2:37
purpose for existence it's to serve
2:39
humankind but everybody has different
2:41
purposes and when I think about how I
2:43
narrow down my big five these are going
2:46
to be the five most important things you
2:48
want to do or see or experience before
2:50
you die and so this museum concept is
2:54
like you want to visualize each day kind
2:57
of as an exhibit in the museum of your
2:59
life which encourages more intentional
3:02
living you're going to align your work
3:04
with purpose so you want to ensure that
3:06
your professional endeavors align with
3:08
your personal values and your big five
3:11
for life so it's a way to sort of filter
3:13
the choices that you make part of this
3:15
is recognizing that we can't see our
3:18
blind spots and so having mentorship
3:21
throughout this process to help keep you
3:23
in line almost an accountability partner
3:25
whether that's a friend that you trust
3:27
to tell you the hard things or a
3:29
counselor someone in in your church or
3:31
even a sponsor the importance of having
3:33
a mentor to guide you in discovering
3:35
your big five for life is pretty
3:37
important it takes a lot of
3:38
introspection and it's it's helpful to
3:40
have somebody that knows you well to
3:42
help you kind of narrow down your big
3:44
five the other piece that's important
3:46
related to this book is having a value
3:48
of continuous growth meaning that you're
3:51
striving for ascending life represents
3:54
continuous growth achievement learning
3:56
new things leaning into discomfort and
3:59
trying to grow and stretch in areas that
4:01
might have been otherwise uncomfortable
4:03
one of my values from my daring greatly
4:06
work through the Bnee Brown program is
4:08
authenticity and so this book really
4:10
aligned for me because authenticity is
4:13
really embracing your truest version of
4:16
yourself not shapeshifting in different
4:18
arenas but allowing yourself to be fully
4:21
you all of the time and you have to
4:24
really have an attitude of embracing
4:26
authenticity to unlock a life purpose
4:28
and fulfillment you can't pretend to be
4:31
somebody that you're not and expect that
4:33
to be congruent with who you say you
4:35
want to be when someone would walk
4:37
through the museum of your life when you
4:39
think about the role of leaders in your
4:41
life or being a leader there's a huge
4:44
impact of leadership leaders help us and
4:46
others grow and achieve their big five
4:48
for life so that's really important to
4:50
have leaders in your world that help you
4:52
strive for healthy striving um and we
4:56
want to make sure that we have practical
4:59
application for some of these concepts
5:02
when it comes to the big five there's
5:04
really awesome exercises in the book
5:06
that help the readers identify their big
5:08
five for life because ultimately you
5:11
want to think about the legacy that
5:12
you're going to leave in your world and
5:15
the legacy that you want to leave behind
5:17
when someone thinks about how they
5:19
remember you and how you contributed in
5:21
your daily actions there was a quote
5:23
that I really found touching when I was
5:25
younger that I read and it was something
5:27
to I might get it a little bit wrong but
5:28
it was something to the degree of people
5:30
won't remember you for what you did but
5:32
they'll remember you for how you made
5:34
them feel and I think about me and my
5:38
big five and my purpose for existence
5:40
and when I think about the legacy that I
5:42
want to leave or the museum of impact
5:45
that I want people to remember me by
5:47
it's learning and creating it's being a
5:50
good mother and showing up with
5:52
unconditional love for my children it's
5:54
being a good wife and a good partner and
5:58
helping my husband to learn how to you
6:00
know go through challenges with his best
6:04
self it's exploring and seeing new
6:07
places and new cultures and new things
6:10
and it's making a difference in the
6:12
lives of the people that are around me
6:13
not just in my family circle and so when
6:16
I think about how do I make choices
6:18
every day if and what I love about this
6:21
book is because for if you're like me
6:23
where you have lots of big ideas but
6:25
they might not all line up with who you
6:27
say you want to be this helps you
6:29
streamline the decision-making process
6:31
and so for me I look at my purpose for
6:34
existence to serve humankind so if what
6:36
I'm going to do doesn't somehow impact
6:38
that it probably ought not to be in my
6:40
to-do list and then when I think about
6:42
my big five the museum that is me I want
6:45
to make sure that the actions that I
6:47
take some way contribute to one of those
6:49
experiences and it helps you to narrow
6:52
down your choices so a way that I've
6:55
also employed this book or used this
6:58
book is in our hiring process for my
7:00
company so if you're in a leadership
7:01
role this can help you as well we have
7:04
our prospective candidates read the book
7:07
and then they present to our team their
7:09
big five for life and their purpose for
7:12
existence and it gives them an
7:13
opportunity to dig into who they are and
7:15
what they want and make sure that it
7:17
aligns with our company's purpose for
7:19
existence and our big five and that way
7:22
we're not trying to fit a square peg
7:24
into a round hole there's consistency
7:26
there's congruence and there's an
7:27
understanding that the culture fit won't
7:29
be foreign and it'll be in conjunction
7:32
and synchronistic with what we're
7:33
looking for with our company and since
7:35
I've started that process the how we've
7:38
hired has been so much easier because
7:40
the people that we're attracting are
7:42
comfortable digging in and leaning into
7:44
some discomfort and having some real
7:46
thoughtful contemplative activity that
7:49
shows us and it shows them they're
7:51
willing to take deep dive into who they
7:53
are and what they want for their lives
7:55
and is what they do you know seven eight
7:57
hours a day consistent for them in their
7:59
world and so I really can't tell you
8:02
enough about how powerful this book was
8:04
it's a really fast read you'll get
8:06
through it in a couple of days it's very
8:08
easy reading but you know when you think
8:11
about what you can do to course correct
8:14
when you decide to dig in and figure out
8:16
why am I here what is the purpose for me
8:18
being here and then what are the actions
8:20
that I need to take so that they line up
8:22
through my potential or inevitable
8:25
museum of my life and you can learn to
8:28
narrow down what it is you want for
8:30
yourself it makes the big decisions
8:32
easier and it makes your daily planning
8:34
easier because it keeps at the forefront
8:37
who am I and what am I here for and what
8:39
do I say I strive for in my future and
8:41
so I highly recommend reading this book
8:44
it's really great john Strleki really
8:46
has changed my life the way that I think
8:49
how I make decisions and how I spend my
8:52
time on this earth so if you're
8:54
struggling and you're in a transition
8:56
time or you're just feeling a little bit
8:58
listless you don't know what it is you
9:00
want to do I recommend picking up this
9:03
book spending a couple of days and
9:05
digging in and I think you'll find
9:08
yourself rejuvenated and a little bit
9:10
more focused on who you are and what you
9:13
want to do what you want to achieve in
9:14
this world so I really appreciate your
9:17
time i hope that you enjoy the book i'd
9:18
love for you to share once you go
9:20
through this in our comments on the show
9:22
you know your purpose for existence and
9:24
your big five and maybe we can spend
9:26
some time conversing a little bit about
9:28
what this process has been like for you
9:30
so I appreciate you tuning in to this
9:32
show i highly recommend this book and
9:35
until we meet again don't forget to lead
9:37
with love it'll never steer you wrong
