Armed forces minister Al Carns and Defence Secretary John Healey have both quit with a scathing attack on Sir Keir's military funding plans. The former defence secretary resigned after claiming the money in the defence investment plan would not be sufficient to defend the UK against threats. In response, Starmer said: “I will always do what is needed to keep our country safe.” Speaking to LBC for the first time since quitting, Mr Carns said: "I have never quit anything in my life. It's the first thing I've quit. But sometimes you've got to make a principled decision, and that's what I've done. And hopefully it will result in the right solution as we move forward."
