Why is Tu-454 Russia’s Smart Alternative to C929 and MC-21-500?
Apr 15, 2026
Russia has unveiled the concept of the Tu-454, a перспективный widebody aircraft that could redefine its long-haul aviation strategy. Positioned between heavy widebody jets like the Il-96 and next-generation projects like the C929, the Tu-454 represents a practical and timely solution in a constrained technological and geopolitical environment.
In this video, we explore why Russia is shifting toward a “middle-class widebody” approach instead of waiting for the delayed PD-35 engine. We also examine how challenges with the MC-21 program, including weight increases and the development of the MC-21-500 with PD-24 engines, have influenced this decision.
The Tu-454 is designed to carry 250–350 passengers over distances up to 15,000 km, powered by the intermediate PD-26 engine. This positions it as a flexible aircraft capable of handling both ultra-long-haul international routes and high-demand domestic routes such as Moscow to Vladivostok.
We also compare the Tu-454 with China’s C929, discuss the collapse of the CR929 partnership, and analyze whether this aircraft can realistically enter service.
Is the Tu-454 a compromise—or a smarter solution? Watch to find out.
