I made a new freeze-dried Candy by
0:01
freeze drying fruit and freeze drying
0:03
Skittles and combine the two to make a
0:06
powderized infused freeze-dried Skittle
0:09
in this video I'm going to share with
0:10
you step by step how to take the
0:11
freeze-dried fruit powderize it and make
0:13
sure it's all infused into that
0:15
freeze-dried Skittle hey welcome to the
0:16
freeze dry business Channel my name is
0:18
David and I run a freeze drying business
0:19
in Idaho I've ran it for four years and
0:22
I started this YouTube channel because I
0:23
wanted to bring more and more content
0:25
related to freeze drying and the
0:27
business side of this industry so if
0:29
you're interested in freeze drying or
0:31
you're interested in starting a freeze
0:32
drying business using your freeze dryer
0:34
go ahead and hit the Subscribe Bell I'd
0:35
love for you to join the community here
0:38
and that way you get notified of more
0:39
videos quickly talk about freeze dryers
0:41
if you don't own a freeze dryer I use
0:43
the Harvest Right freeze dryer I also
0:45
own a stay fresh freeze dryer now if you
0:47
already own a freeze dryer then great
0:49
what you can use your freeze dryer for
0:50
is either for home use with food
0:52
preservation or you can make it a
0:53
business and in today's video I'm going
0:56
to show you how to experiment with
0:58
different types of applications with the
1:01
freeze-dried Fess product freeze-dried
1:03
fruit when you put it in the freeze
1:05
dryer it's going through a process
1:07
called sublimation what that does and
1:10
why freeze drying is taking off is
1:13
you're really preserving the highest
1:15
number of mutri in a product that you
1:18
put in the freeze dryer when it comes
1:20
out and what you can do now is apply it
1:22
as a powder form because now that the
1:25
pineapple let's say or the strawberry is
1:27
dried you can now crush it up and then
1:30
let's say make it more of a powder over
1:32
top to flavor something else there's a
1:34
lot of applications for the powder of a
1:36
finished freeze-dried product all right
1:37
enough about the science part let's get
1:39
to the meat and potatoes of this video
1:40
and what it's all about again we're
1:42
going to powderize that's a new term
1:44
that I'm coining we're going to
1:46
powderize five different fruits and
1:47
we're going to spray the Skittles so
1:49
that we can take that fruit powder and
1:52
sprinkle it over the candy and the
1:54
Skittles and make it more of a flavored
1:57
type of Skittle removing not necessar L
2:00
the the the fruit chaste of the chewi of
2:03
the skittle but kind of add strawberry
2:07
plus the great flavor of the skittle
2:09
right so if you're looking at doing this
2:10
particular recipe I'd suggest finding a
2:12
way to crush your fruit this is a mort
2:15
pestl that I've got you've probably seen
2:17
this on different types of YouTube
2:19
channels where people are doing it with
2:21
candy you can also see it with guacamole
2:23
obviously but I'm just going to use this
2:25
because I use it for guacamole we're
2:26
going to crush it up and make it into a
2:28
powder and then you're also going to
2:29
need a spray bottle these are really
2:30
cheap put some purified water in it
2:33
you're obvious going to need your
2:34
Skittles and then you're also going to
2:36
need your trays that's really all this
2:37
recip is going to do now in the meantime
2:39
while you're doing this you're going to
2:41
want to set your freeze dryer to 140°
2:45
and then make sure it's on high
2:46
temperature mode now it's going to
2:48
pre-freeze for 15 minutes that's the
2:50
process of the freeze dryer then we're
2:51
going to be able to turn it on high
2:53
temperature mode close the drain valve
2:54
and then put our Skittles in so what I'm
2:56
going to get is I'm actually going to
2:57
use a a bowl like this that has has 2
3:00
cups and I'm just going to actually put
3:03
about 2 cups worth just filling up here
3:06
of the pineapple and then I'm going to
3:08
make a powder out of it using the mortar
3:10
and pestl you know it seems like that's
3:11
a lot so maybe we'll just do a an actual
3:14
cup freeze-dried pineapple with any type
3:16
of freeze-dried fruit it just becomes a
3:19
crunchy flavorful snack it's really
3:21
delicious and so we're going to put this
3:24
fruit into the pestl and we're
3:27
going to just make it into a p so I've
3:30
got a strainer now the reason I'm going
3:32
to use this is I'm just going to be able
3:34
to pour some of these Skittles into
3:37
here I'm not going to do too many
3:40
Skittles because I just want to see how
3:42
this all tastes right so what we're
3:44
going to do is we're going to take the
3:45
spray bottle and we're going to coat the
3:47
Skittles with some water the only reason
3:50
we're doing that is not necessarily to
3:52
take off all of the the dye that's on
3:56
the for the colors but just to get a
3:58
little bit wet and now we're going to
4:03
with pineapple we're going to now put it
4:07
onto the tray you see how it's kind of
4:11
pineapple so this is this is my first
4:15
time doing this and what I'm already
4:17
seeing is like you know it's not the
4:20
same as as dusting them over with chamoy
4:24
or you know tajun type of uh flavoring
4:27
that you can buy so now we're going to
4:29
do strawberries I'm going to change my
4:31
gloves out all right let's go ahead and
4:32
do strawberries now what I'm going to do
4:34
too again is I'm going to do a cup of
4:37
the freeze-dried strawberries this is
4:40
the great part about freeze drying is
4:42
that you get to try different things and
4:44
this is what you should be doing as a
4:46
freeze-dried business I'm taking
4:49
something that we all know right now
4:51
which is a freeze-dried Skittle and I'm
4:53
just going to take different types of
4:55
flavorings from fruit and put it onto
4:58
the skittle and that's unique
5:00
right have you really tasted a free
5:03
dried pineapple flavored Skittle what
5:05
I'm going to do differently between the
5:08
pineapple and and the strawberries dust
5:12
is I'm actually going to put the
5:15
Skittles already on the
5:20
tray and I'm going to spray it with the
5:23
with the water just lightly now and now
5:26
what I'm going to do is I'm going to
5:30
the powder and I'm just going to kind of
5:32
put it around on top of the Skittles
5:35
here you could probably use a
5:37
sifter um you know use your hands things
5:40
like that and all I'm doing is I'm just
5:42
trying to coat all the Skittles and then
5:45
I'm going to move the Skittles around a
5:46
little bit just so it can be all around
5:49
everybody on the other three I'm going
5:51
to do dragon fruit mango and papaya and
5:53
then I'll have strawberries and the
5:55
pineapple now before we put the things
5:57
in the freeze dryer if you could do me a
5:58
favor and hit the thumbs up up or the
6:00
like on this video really help the video
6:03
get out to more people who are
6:04
interested in freeze drying and trying
6:05
different things on top of the thumbs up
6:07
make sure you check out the link in the
6:08
video description because there's other
6:10
videos related to freeze drying knowing
6:12
how to start a freeze drying business
6:13
tips and tricks and also hit the
6:15
notification Bell so that you get
6:17
notifications on my phone because I'll
6:18
be doing more and more live streams to
6:21
answer your questions about freeze dring
6:23
all right let's get to the next couple
6:24
of fruits and put these
7:21
types of infused powderized fruit
7:23
Skittles that we did here but before I
7:25
do that if you want to check out how to
7:27
actually freeze dry these tropical
7:30
fruits that we did as well as some other
7:32
standard fruits that I sell in my freeze
7:34
dry business and I recommend you do too
7:35
make sure you check out the thumbnails
7:37
coming up at the end of this video and I
7:39
also had the video about how to freeze
7:40
dry strawberries blueberries and
7:42
pineapple all right let's get started
7:43
with the taste test I'm going to taste
7:45
each one of these this is going to be
7:46
the first time that I've tasted them so
7:48
this is the mango this is dragon fruit
7:51
pineapple strawberries and then the
7:54
papaya so let's try the mango
7:57
first after trying the mango I had a
8:00
little bit of a taste of the mango on
8:02
one of the Skittles but then he
8:03
immediately hit the kind of the
8:05
crunchiness and the flavor of the
8:06
skittle so I wouldn't say that the mango
8:09
actually really hit that well I couldn't
8:11
taste the fruit all right so as you can
8:12
see with the dragon fruit has like the
8:14
seeds with in it so let's try
8:17
that interesting I couldn't taste the
8:19
dragon fruit right away when I crunched
8:21
on it but then the aftertaste for some
8:23
reason I may have hit five or six of
8:25
these seeds and I actually was able to
8:27
taste a little bit of the tartness of
8:29
the the dragon fruit so I'd say the
8:31
dragon fruit definitely hit differently
8:33
than the mango I think this is better
8:35
but still not what I was anticipating I
8:37
would have like to have had the flavor
8:38
hit a little bit more heavy so let's
8:40
move on to the pineapple all right so
8:42
here's the pineapple now what I'm going
8:44
to do is I'm going to take this one
8:45
right here it seems like it's coated
8:51
pineapple wow the pineapple this is by
8:53
far the best out of the past two that
8:55
we've done I can taste the pineapple
8:57
immediately and then I feel like I'm
9:00
tasting the skittle this is definitely
9:02
what I was looking for there's a lot
9:04
bigger chunks of the pineapple so it's
9:06
not as much of a powder form there's
9:08
little chunks that might be the ticket
9:09
for this is to make it so that there's
9:11
larger chunks but still small enough
9:14
where it's going to coat the skittle all
9:15
right let's try the strawberries now we
9:17
did this one the same way we did with
9:19
the pineapple we put it in a bowl mixed
9:23
one strawberry didn't really work that
9:25
well I couldn't even taste any part of
9:27
the strawberry I just tasted the skittle
9:29
so papaya kind of looks like the mango
9:31
as well it's not as coated and I don't
9:33
see as big of a chunk so this is
9:35
probably going to end up being similar
9:36
to the strawberry and the
9:39
mango papaya I didn't taste it at all
9:42
pineapple I'm going to say is definitely
9:43
the winner here because it really has a
9:46
a strong layer of the pineapple and
9:48
maybe it's just the flavor that enhances
9:50
through freeze drying and then adding it
9:52
to the skittle is clearly a big winner
9:55
so if you're going to do this I'd say
9:56
hands down you need to do the pineapple
9:59
and then try other different types of
10:00
fruits and like I said at the beginning
10:01
of this video powderize your
10:03
freeze-dried fruit is a great
10:05
application for trying different types
10:07
of recipes try to use it for frosting or
10:09
flavoring different types of baking
10:11
goods and don't forget to check out more
10:12
of the videos coming up next I'll see
