a certain kind of Cyber attack has been
0:02
making headlines in Indiana after
0:04
affecting multiple local governments our
0:06
Garett Drake has the details Garrett
0:09
yeah Dana ransomware has been the Talk
0:11
of the Town over the last few days after
0:13
the attack on Clay County however this
0:15
is not the first time it has struck a
0:19
government multiple Indiana Counties
0:22
have fallen victim to a certain kind of
0:24
Cyber attack called ransomware Monroe
0:26
and Clay counties are dealing with a
0:28
similar situation that VG County
0:30
encountered back in 2019 and about 2
0:33
a.m. Our IT department was notified by a
0:36
system they had in place that we had an
0:38
infection within our computer system um
0:42
initially we thought it was what we call
0:43
a malware attack um we later learned
0:46
within you know by the next day that it
0:48
was actually a ransomware attack the US
0:51
cyber security and infrastructure
0:53
Security Agency says that ransomware is
0:55
a form of malware that is designed to
0:57
encrypt files and hold them for ransom
0:59
for a local government they are left
1:01
with a choice of whether or not to pay
1:03
you know we call it a ransomware and
1:05
while vgo County government did not have
1:06
to pay a ransom the reason why we didn't
1:09
Ransom was asked um but I can't share
1:12
specifics as I recall um due to the way
1:15
the investigation was um I do recall it
1:18
came from we'll say an Eastern European
1:20
area um on our globe while all affected
1:22
agencies have yet to go on camera Clay
1:25
County Commissioners filed a local
1:27
disaster Declaration on July 11th
1:29
current vgo County Commissioner Chris
1:31
Switzer said earlier in the week that
1:32
they are taking precautions to avoid
1:34
another attack in vgo County what
1:36
happened after we had that Cyber attack
1:38
as we worked with the Indiana office of
1:39
technology to enforce our cyber security
1:43
that we already had in place offered
1:44
trainings to our employees and which are
1:47
required at this point and just making
1:48
sure our employees know that if they get
1:50
an email with a link in it to make sure
1:52
they do their due diligence this is
1:54
still a developing story and officials
1:56
announced that the courthouse is not
1:58
expected to reopen until at least July
2:00
22nd back to you all right thanks so
