Scott Cruz who's a instructor at Sanford
0:02
University says that ransomware
0:04
continues to be a big threat for a lot
0:07
of Industries and he mentions too that
0:10
when you see organizations having uh you
0:12
know their computer systems rolling back
0:14
in gradually it means they probably
0:17
found their backup data and they just
0:19
need more time to get back online and
0:22
that could be the case for the city of
0:24
Birmingham and
0:25
Ascension Scott Cruz is a cyber security
0:28
instructor at sford University
0:30
ransomware attacks have become very
0:32
common we talked about the latest
0:33
ransomware attack Ascension St Vincent's
0:36
Hospital is going through and why major
0:38
companies and governments are the
0:40
victims those are the the budgets that
0:42
are able to pay uh individuals aren't
0:44
usually targeted directly from
0:45
ransomware uh to the level that
0:47
businesses are individuals may never be
0:49
the intended target Cruz says but they
0:52
may eventually see it impact them I
0:54
think it's really important for us as
0:56
individuals and as companies to be smart
0:58
with our activities online Ascension
1:01
says some of its retail pharmacies in
1:03
Alabama are not operational they want
1:05
patients to bring their prescription
1:07
information so they can get their
1:08
medicine filled at another Pharmacy the
1:11
hospital is also transitioning to a
1:12
manual system for patient documentation
1:15
patients with upcoming surgery should
1:17
bring a list of current medications and
1:20
notes of their symptoms the city of
1:22
Birmingham is still recovering from its
1:24
Network disruption in March while this
1:26
current budget process is unique our
1:28
Focus would not wait from lifting up
1:31
each neighborhood the city's Financial
1:33
Officer says his office needs more time
1:35
to work on the budget because their
1:37
Department's computers took a hit we
1:39
have about nine weeks of information
1:41
that we've done on a manual process that
1:44
now has to be put back into our
1:45
financial system then we have to
1:47
continue to operate on a day-to-day
1:49
basis using that manual system crew says
1:52
it's important all companies prioritize
1:55
and invest in cyber security to prevent
1:57
a ransomware that can be through um
2:00
securing your data but it can also be
2:02
through just planning what do we need to
2:03
do do we need to purchase cyber security
2:05
insurance so that we can transfer this
2:10
risk the Birmingham City's uh Chief
2:13
Financial Officer mentioned today that
2:15
they did not find any threat to the
2:18
city's system and while we wait to find
2:20
out what caused this Ransom wear for
2:23
Ascension they say that their emergency
2:26
room and Urgent Cares are open and
2:29
operational we're live in Birmingham of
