Reading from the book of Exodus. In
0:10
those days, it was told the king of
0:12
Egypt that the people had fled. Then the
0:14
hearts of Pharaoh and his officials were
0:16
turned against him, and they said, "What
0:19
are we to do? How have we let Israel
0:21
escape, thus depriving us of their
0:25
So Pharaoh harnessed his chariot and
0:28
took his people with him. He took 600
0:30
chosen chariots and all the chariots of
0:33
Egypt with their armorbearers. The Lord
0:36
hardened the heart of Pharaoh, king of
0:37
Egypt, and he pursued the Israelites
0:40
while they were marching out with their
0:42
arms raised. The Egyptians pursued the
0:44
Israelites with all Pharaoh's horses and
0:46
chariots, his horsemen, and his army,
0:49
and found them encamped by the sea near
0:52
Fhareth opposite Beiel Sephan. As
0:55
Pharaoh approached, the Israelites
0:57
looked up and saw the Egyptians behind
0:59
them. Terrified, they cried out to the
1:02
Lord. They said to Moses, "Was it
1:05
because there were no graves in Egypt
1:07
that you brought us to die in the
1:09
wilderness? What good was it for us to
1:11
be brought out of Egypt? Wasn't that
1:14
what we said to you there? Let us alone
1:16
to serve the Egyptians, for it was
1:18
better to serve the Egyptians than to
1:20
die in the wilderness.
1:23
Moses said to the people, "Do not be
1:25
afraid. Stand firm, and you will see
1:28
what the Lord will do today to save you.
1:31
The Egyptians you see today, you will
1:33
never see again. The Lord will fight for
1:36
you, and you can rest assured." The Lord
1:39
said to Moses, "Why do you cry to me for
1:42
help? Tell the children of Israel to set
1:45
out. As for you, lift up your staff,
1:48
stretch out your hand over the sea, and
1:50
divide it so that the children of Israel
1:52
may walk on dry ground through the midst
1:54
of the sea. For my part, I will harden
1:57
the hearts of the Egyptians so that they
2:00
will pursue them. And I will gain glory
2:02
through Pharaoh and all his army, his
2:05
chariots, and his horsemen. And the
2:07
Egyptians will know that I am the Lord
2:10
when I gain glory through Pharaoh and
2:12
his chariots and his horsemen. The word
2:15
of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
2:26
Proclamation of the Gospel of Jesus
2:28
Christ according to St. Matthew. Glory
2:31
to you, Lord. At that time some teachers
2:34
of the law and Pharisees said to Jesus,
2:36
"Teacher, we want to see a sign from
2:39
you." Jesus answered them, "An evil and
2:42
adulterous generation seeks after a
2:44
sign, and no sign will be given to it
2:46
except the sign of the prophet Jonah.
2:49
For as Jonah was three days and three
2:51
nights in the belly of the whale, so the
2:53
Son of Man will be three days and three
2:55
nights in the heart of the earth. On the
2:57
day of judgment, the people of Nineveh
2:59
will rise up against this generation and
3:01
condemn it because they repented at the
3:03
preaching of Jonah. And one greater than
3:06
Jonah is here. On the day of judgment,
3:08
the queen of the south will rise up
3:10
against this generation and condemn it
3:12
because she came from the ends of the
3:14
earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon. And
3:16
one greater than Solomon is here. Word
3:19
of salvation. Glory to you, Lord.
3:31
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
3:34
imagine yourself trapped between two
3:36
rocky mountains with an enemy army
3:38
rapidly approaching from behind and a
3:40
vast stormy sea in front of you. There
3:43
is nowhere to go, no way out in sight.
3:46
Despair begins to grip your hearts. This
3:49
was exactly the situation the people of
3:51
Israel faced on the shores of the Red
3:53
Sea. A scene that seems straight out of
3:55
a thriller, but which is the stark
3:57
reality of our first reading today.
3:59
Pharaoh had changed his mind. After
4:02
releasing the Israelites after the 10
4:04
devastating plagues, he woke up in the
4:06
morning and thought, "What have we done
4:08
letting Israel go so that they no longer
4:11
serve us?" How human this reaction is.
4:15
How often do we too make the right
4:17
decisions in moments of crisis only to
4:20
regret them when the consequences become
4:22
clear? Pharaoh mobilized his army, 600
4:26
chosen chariots, all the chariots of
4:28
Egypt, an impressive military force that
4:31
made the earth tremble under the weight
4:32
of their wheels. From a human
4:34
perspective, it was an impossible
4:36
situation for the Israelites. They were
4:39
former slaves, unarmed, with women,
4:42
children, and the elderly among them. It
4:45
was David against Goliath, multiplied by
4:49
thousands. And it is in this moment of
4:51
seemingly imminent defeat that God
4:53
reveals his power in a way that would
4:55
forever mark the memory of the chosen
4:57
people. Why do you cry out to me? The
5:00
Lord says to Moses, "Tell the Israelites
5:03
to go forward." What an astonishing
5:06
command, to go forward when there is no
5:08
way forward. To press forward when all
5:11
seems lost. But God had a plan. He
5:15
instructed Moses to stretch out his hand
5:17
over the sea, promising that the waters
5:20
would part. And then comes one of the
5:22
most powerful statements in all of
5:23
scripture. I will glorify myself through
5:26
Pharaoh and all his army, and the
5:28
Egyptians will know that I am the Lord.
5:30
Reflect on this statement, my brothers
5:33
and sisters. God was not just saving his
5:36
people. He was revealing his nature,
5:39
demonstrating his power, making it clear
5:41
to all nations that he is the Lord.
5:44
Sometimes God allows us to reach the end
5:46
of our own resources so that we can
5:48
fully experience his supernatural power.
5:50
This story resonates through the
5:52
centuries because all of us at some
5:54
point have found ourselves before our
5:56
own Red Sea. Perhaps it's a disease that
5:59
seems incurable, a desperate financial
6:01
situation, a seemingly irreparable
6:04
relationship, an addiction that seems
6:06
impossible to overcome. The enemy is
6:09
behind us. The obstacle is in front of
6:11
us. And we see no way out. It is
6:14
precisely in these moments that God
6:16
reveals himself most clearly. Not when
6:19
everything is going well and we don't
6:20
need him, but when we are at the end of
6:23
our resources, when our only option is
6:25
to trust completely in his power.
6:27
Turning now to the Gospel of Matthew, we
6:30
find a completely different scene, but
6:32
one that carries a deeply related
6:34
message. The scribes and Pharisees
6:36
approached Jesus with a seemingly
6:38
reasonable request. Teacher, we want to
6:41
see a sign from you. At first glance,
6:44
this request may seem legitimate. After
6:47
all, if Jesus claims to be who he says
6:50
he is, why not show a convincing sign?
6:53
But Jesus sees through the facade of
6:55
this request and reveals what is really
6:57
happening, a wicked and adulterous
6:59
generation seeks after a sign.
7:02
Jesus realizes that this is not a
7:04
sincere request from someone genuinely
7:06
seeking truth. It is the arrogant demand
7:09
of people who want God on their own
7:11
terms, who want a God who performs
7:13
tricks on demand, who satisfies their
7:15
curiosity without demanding
7:17
transformation of their lives. What a
7:19
powerful contrast to the people of
7:21
Israel at the Red Sea. There the people
7:24
were desperate, recognizing their
7:27
complete dependence on God. Here the
7:30
religious leaders are making demands as
7:32
if God must prove himself to them. Jesus
7:35
responds with a reference to the prophet
7:37
Jonah. As Jonah was three days and three
7:40
nights in the belly of the fish, so the
7:42
son of man will be three days and three
7:44
nights in the heart of the earth. He is
7:46
pointing to the greatest sign of all,
7:48
his own death and resurrection. But then
7:51
Jesus does something surprising. He
7:54
contrasts this unbelieving generation
7:56
with two others. the Ninevites and the
7:59
Queen of the South. The Ninevites
8:01
repented at the preaching of Jonah. And
8:03
the queen of the south came from afar to
8:05
hear Solomon's wisdom. And behold, a
8:08
greater than Jonah is here. A greater
8:11
than Solomon is here. This is a
8:14
devastating rebuke. Pagan people who
8:16
lack the privilege of knowing the
8:18
scriptures responded better to God's
8:20
revelation than those who should have
8:22
been better prepared to recognize it. My
8:24
dear brothers and sisters, these two
8:26
readings confront us with a fundamental
8:28
question. What is our attitude toward
8:31
God? Are we like the Israelites at the
8:34
Red Sea, recognizing our desperate need
8:36
for his intervention? Or are we like the
8:39
scribes and Pharisees, making demands
8:42
and setting conditions for our faith?
8:44
The truth is that God has already
8:46
performed the greatest possible sign in
8:48
the death and resurrection of Jesus
8:50
Christ. There is no clearer
8:52
demonstration of his love. No more
8:54
convincing proof of his power. The empty
8:57
tomb is the parted Red Sea of the
8:59
Christian era. A divine intervention
9:01
that forever changed the course of human
9:03
history. But just as the Israelites
9:05
needed to step out in faith and enter
9:07
the parted sea, we too need to respond
9:09
to the sign God has already given us. We
9:12
need to acknowledge Jesus as Lord,
9:15
accept his sacrifice for our sins, and
9:17
allow him to transform our lives. And
9:20
when we find ourselves facing our own
9:22
impossible situations, we can remember
9:25
God's faithfulness at the Red Sea. The
9:27
same God who parted the waters for the
9:29
Israelites is the same God who raised
9:31
Jesus from the dead. He is capable of
9:34
doing the impossible in our lives, too.
9:37
But this requires faith. It requires
9:40
trusting him even when we can't see the
9:42
way forward, even when the situation
9:44
seems hopeless. It requires recognizing
9:47
our complete dependence on his grace and
9:49
power. Sometimes God leads us to the
9:52
seashore so we can experience the
9:54
miracle of crossing. Sometimes he allows
9:56
us to face giants so we can discover
9:58
that he is greater than any obstacle.
10:01
Sometimes he places us in impossible
10:03
situations so we can witness his
10:05
transformative power. So today, whatever
10:08
red sea you are facing, remember the
10:11
same God who glorified himself in
10:13
Pharaoh and his entire army wants to
10:15
glorify himself in your situation as
10:17
well. He wants to show his power, reveal
10:20
his nature, demonstrate his love for
10:22
you. Do not demand additional signs. The
10:26
sign has already been given on the cross
10:28
and at the empty tomb. Instead, like the
10:31
ninevites, respond with repentance and
10:34
faith. like the queen of the south. Seek
10:37
the wisdom that only Christ can offer.
10:40
And remember, he who is greater than
10:42
Jonah, greater than Solomon, greater
10:45
than any obstacle in your lives is with
10:48
you. He divides seas, raises the dead,
10:51
and turns impossibilities into miracles.
10:54
May we have the faith of the Israelites
10:56
to step into the divided sea. And may we
10:59
have the wisdom to recognize that in
11:01
Christ we have already received the
11:03
greatest sign of all, the unconditional
11:05
love and transforming power of God. May
11:08
the Lord bless and keep you and may you
11:11
experience his liberating power in every
11:13
area of your lives. Amen.
11:24
St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in
11:27
battle. Be our protection against the
11:29
wickedness and snares of the devil. May
11:32
God rebuke him, we humbly pray. And do
11:36
thou, O prince of the heavenly host by
11:38
the power of God, cast into hell Satan
11:42
and all the evil spirits who prowl
11:44
throughout the world seeking the ruin of
