2:23
Collins the on air personality from 92.3
2:27
to beat eras the color lines erased the
2:30
color
2:31
line come on erased the color
2:35
lines at a time when there was a radial
2:38
Renaissance happening here on the West
2:40
Coast okay from Northern California to
2:43
Southern California where it was rooted
2:46
at 1 Point 92.3 The Beat became the
2:49
quintessential hipop platform of all
2:52
time and I will put that up against any
2:55
other brand including Hot
2:57
97 yeah at this point when you had e and
3:01
ruthless radio wow we had Mike nordone
3:05
and King GS yep Sway and King Tech the
3:09
world famous wakeup show the only
3:11
syndicated show of its kind the largest
3:13
and longest running one of his kind with
3:15
DJ
3:17
Revolution
3:19
reevolu we had P Funk P Funk
3:25
Theo and this man was the premier Fred
3:30
this man was the premier on air night
3:32
jock who went by the name of the one and
3:36
only Jesse Collins who used to come on
3:38
air right after me and King Tech that
3:41
blew my mind it blew my mind being on
3:44
the East Coast I had no idea blew my
3:46
mind way Jesse was one of the hardest
3:49
working voices on radio you told us that
3:51
last night absolutely street team events
3:53
he was there we was there we was there
3:56
driving the the promo promo whatever he
4:00
was there Venice Beach he was there
4:02
golden tail and Elsa gundo I was there
4:05
you were there to be where I that's
4:08
crazy he did what he had to do welcome
4:11
him to the show The One and Only AR
4:13
friend Jesse Collins this here that's
4:17
amazing thank you come a long way Tracy
4:20
G long way we all come a long way yes
4:22
indeed man ruthless radio we got a Julio
4:25
G Tony G kha Milan Stefan come on man
4:29
yella Y and of course our brother Easy E
4:34
yes the man who put it all together the
4:35
man who put it all together that was a
4:37
phenomenal time wasn't it that was a
4:40
phenomenal time what what do you
4:41
remember most about it I just remember
4:45
first of all I remember e had the best
4:49
booking strategy for rap artists okay
4:51
what was it the brown ones okay remember
4:54
the
4:56
weed he's he be like I give him a brown
4:58
one and then and everybody came through
5:01
everybody came through all it took was a
5:03
blunt you didn't have to fly them in
5:05
riters none of that if he promised you a
5:07
brown one he was showing up how popular
5:10
was his show I mean ruthless was huge it
5:14
was huge it was huge it was huge I mean
5:16
you got to understand like I think Eric
5:19
was probably the first rapper to have a
5:22
radio show right cuz wow obviously Sway
5:26
and Tech were huge they were Superstars
5:28
they they open the format okay right and
5:32
then well and we were rappers before yes
5:33
we were rappers before yes sorry we were
5:35
the first yes they were the first sorry
5:37
they were the first oh sway Eric was the
5:40
first from Compton how about that there
5:41
you go how about that I got it I got it
5:43
Go and um you know he just had an idea
5:47
for ruthless radio and uh and it was
5:50
amazing opened a lot of doors for West
5:52
Coast artists um not just west coast
5:54
Bone Thugs M Bone Thugs and Harmony wow
5:57
Bone Thugs and Harmony broke on ruthless
5:59
radio mhm I mean it was just wow it was
6:03
it was an incredible time it was an
6:04
incredible time where now you weren't
6:06
from La though no I was from DC so you
6:09
had came in from DC came I was on PGC in
6:12
DC which was uh number one in DC at the
6:15
time I remember PGC that's like Steph
6:18
lover and different people I actually
6:20
predated that I was the Donnie Simpson
6:22
era talk
6:24
your
6:26
taking I was the Donnie when I was there
6:29
tiger had just got on so that's how like
6:33
where I was at wow Tiger's your son
6:35
Tiger
6:38
Tiger it was albd was uh was nights and
6:42
we had and of course Donnie Simpson was
6:44
a superstar and I was there for a minute
6:46
and then I got to the beat in La wow and
6:50
I I hadn't been at the beat I had been
6:52
there maybe six months not even maybe
6:55
not even that long and then I got on
6:56
ruthless what made you move from DC to
6:59
LA F I mean just the opportunity M there
7:02
was just I was on I was in DC and then I
7:05
came out here for a music video friends
7:08
of mine had a record called booty called
7:11
the KO
7:12
boys remember that they were signed to
7:15
Maverick Madonna's label Madonna's label
7:18
Dana danne was on Maverick um shout out
7:22
to James Lopez who's doing promo then
7:24
who now now run who now runs uh Charles
7:27
King's company right that James Jame
7:30
Lopez okay got you and um so we shot
7:34
this video I came out to just be the
7:36
homeboy in the back and I took a meeting
7:39
at the beat with uh Keith naft remember
7:42
Keith remember Keith I talk Keith tell
7:44
Keith Story the whole time see Keith had
7:46
a life before he came to the beat right
7:48
C yes yes yes and I went in and I had a
7:52
air check M and I had the little I had
7:54
45 seconds like three three breaks and
7:58
Nati said that's it and I was like if
8:00
you give me a job you can hear that [ __ ]
8:02
every day
8:04
hour and he just said all right and that
8:07
was it and probably a couple weeks later
8:10
I was in LA you were in La that's a
8:12
beautiful story yeah Keith nfle is the
8:14
same person that hired Sway and Tech to
8:16
the radio predating Jesse Collins you
8:19
know really ke that's how we got on KL
8:22
Keith put yall on Wow ke well Alex Mahia
8:26
y brought us to Cel um and then Keith
8:30
recognized wow what is this thing
8:33
happening with these guys and this
8:34
hip-hop thing we got to put them on and
8:36
that was in um
8:38
9091 wow yeah and so we ushered Keith
8:42
into the culture and along with other
8:45
DJs that were there but primarily
8:47
showing him how to program the music how
8:49
you can mix A Tribe Called Quest record
8:52
uh and find a way to mix it with uh uh
8:54
Taylor danne or you know Mariah Carey or
8:58
whatever was out at that time or Janet
9:00
Jackson and how cuz you remember at one
9:03
point hip hop didn't play in certain day
9:05
Parts oh no you could only do it was mix
9:07
show records that's right mix show
9:09
records and that's how we were breaking
9:11
records right so by the time we came to
9:13
La it was like yo you better bring us to
9:15
LA or we going to work on that other
9:16
station wow and go against you and
9:19
that's why we came and brought the
9:21
indication and so Westside radio was a
9:24
um idea that actually started in the bay
9:27
and brought it down brought it down um
9:30
Harold Austin Harold oh Harold Austin
9:33
remember Harold Aus yeah Michelle
9:35
Santano yeah and they were all
9:36
programmers under Keith's to they all
9:39
Joey AR they all came under Keith and so
9:43
we came and brought that fire and at the
9:46
same time that's when ruthless got that
9:48
their show and it was just a Renaissance
9:51
period happening at that time cuz it was
9:53
a Saturday night and you could
9:55
everything else was on the playlist
9:57
that's right and so it was it was just
10:00
real it some could say anarchy it was
10:03
just freedom because they were playing
10:05
the records that they wanted uh ruths
10:07
was playing the records that that EAS
10:09
wanted and Julio wanted and uh and it
10:13
was really also the first time that like
10:16
freestyling became big on the radio
10:19
right everybody had to come and do a
10:20
freestyle and that was a big thing and
10:23
y'all would people would be up there
10:24
just killing it all night all night
10:26
right and then uh and then we we did it
10:28
some on ruthless and then it was just
10:30
and it was also a crazy time cuz that
10:33
was at the height of the whole lot of
10:36
death roll bad
10:38
boy all that all that energy was
10:41
swirling around that time can you talk
10:42
about that energy cuz people it was dark
10:45
to me like it was you know that that
10:48
whole tension that was happening at that
10:50
oh I mean look like I said I was from DC
10:52
and I remember and I've been on the
10:53
radio you know for a minute and ruthless
10:57
was the first radio show where you know
10:59
we had security outside the door we had
11:03
security at the gate at the radio
11:06
station oh no like big man and the twins
11:08
that was real yeah that was real the
11:11
security were Hogs too like like it was
11:15
it was tight it was tight and they were
11:18
ready they were ready for whatever like
11:21
really ready but they were so big right
11:24
look crazy whatever never happened this
11:26
this was like dudes who uh ran their own
11:28
security companies that out now you know
11:31
what I mean and and where the studio was
11:33
on yucka Street yuck was a area of
11:36
Hollywood I guess and when you came on
11:39
the Block there used to be a banner that
11:41
went all ac across the whole street of
11:44
yucka that said you are now entering a
11:47
danger zone this is a drug zone no oh no
11:51
it was rough K you not and it had a gate
11:53
and so you had to the worst part was
11:55
like you had to try to time that gate so
11:58
you could get in before you know
12:01
problems rolled up on your
12:03
window yucka was like sound crazy do you
12:06
know what else was on yucka what's that
12:08
this is you seen Pretty Woman yeah you
12:11
know the hotel that he the Richard Gear
12:14
goes to get her at the end yeah that's
12:15
on yaka that was on yaka that's on yaka
12:18
that same block that same block that
12:20
hotel yo you ever see what what's on
12:22
some crazy moments you remember from
12:24
Radio I remember when we had big up and
12:27
a caller called and said you can't call
12:29
yourself Biggie Smalls oh that's right
12:32
cuz it was the white kid the other kid
12:33
was Biggie Smalls yeah yeah and it was
12:36
like yeah I remember that and they had
12:38
to he had to fight for the name and all
12:40
that and so the kid called while we're
12:42
live on the air and said legally and
12:44
Big's on the air with us right and we
12:46
like what what are you talking about I'm
12:48
the real he had copywritten the name or
12:50
something yeah legally he had
12:51
trademarked or copy the name he tried
12:54
yeah and the kid the skinny white kid in
12:58
that Environ with all those big security
13:01
guards from the street came up to the
13:03
beat yeah to argue his case just trying
13:07
to fight for his name fight fight for
13:10
that name I'm G to say his name I'm say
13:12
fight for that name so is this why
13:13
biggie changed to Notorious BIG possibly
13:16
that's exactly why it is I I believe and
13:19
that happened on our
13:20
show okay so SED thugged his way to
13:23
radio and Jesse got on radio to a booty
13:25
call it all makes sense to me now I got
13:27
it it all come together together it all
13:31
came together man what do I I mean like
13:33
I just remember the radio was crazy back
13:36
then yeah we just did whatever remember
13:38
you I remember I was on during the OJ
13:41
trial yeah and so I used to have um live
13:46
from jail with Faison love and Chris
13:48
Tucker and Chris was OJ and Faison was
13:52
Alin oh wow get out to do a skit yeah we
13:57
were doing what you doing in jail
14:00
what it was crazy they used to sell the
14:02
tapes in the swap meat wow it was crazy
14:05
it was just so out of control what we
14:07
were doing back then yeah but you and it
14:10
was just like and then go ahead no no go
14:12
go no I was just saying and just just
14:15
like I feel like that was also just like
14:18
just so much music coming out fast and
14:22
you were breaking it yeah you know I
14:25
remember you remember when D'Angelo
14:27
broke remember we were all at House of
14:29
Blues like nobody had really heard that
14:31
album yet mhm and like like that was the
14:34
beauty of House of Blues back then yeah
14:36
Jay performed at House of Blues Tupac
14:38
performed at House of Blues Snoop like
14:41
everybody played House of Blues yeah
14:43
prince prince played House of Blues it
14:46
was it was uh it it was that was a
14:49
moment that was great man Jesse Collins
14:51
was right on top of it and the thing is
14:53
when you were a owner of personality in
14:55
La M you had the opportunity to do so so
14:59
much cuz Hollywood is right here yep and
15:01
and the on a personality in La was
15:04
really treated like a celebrity right
15:06
wow and so Jesse you know he was quite a
15:10
item in the
15:14
streets s you just putting it all out
15:16
there huh it all out there well that's
15:19
kind of funny Jesse because I was saying
15:21
to sway earlier today if you did well at
15:24
Radio if you a good on a personality it
15:27
was it seems easy to make the transition
15:30
into television and film we've watched
15:31
people do it who were great at on their
15:34
radio did some of your background from
15:36
being so good at radio from Washington
15:38
DC to Los Angeles help you um in your
15:41
transition because you you have to have
15:44
so many different mechanics doing radio
15:46
live radio I mean listen I don't first
15:49
of all I don't know if I was ever good I
15:50
think I was adequate I got
15:55
through how do you sway is great no is
15:59
great at radio but to me like big boy
16:03
great like there's people that are great
16:05
tiger by the way this time period he's
16:07
talking about this is what I'm saying I
16:09
know the time period that you're
16:10
speaking of and I also know that is very
16:13
hard DC radio is not easy and Los
16:16
Angeles radio not easy those are yeah
16:19
you weren't like those are comp those
16:20
are competitive uh Market competitive
16:23
markets I think for me the
16:27
transition the transition was not
16:30
anything that I could have predicted it
16:32
was really
16:33
simply um The Gutter truth is I got
16:37
fired and I refused like the day I got
16:42
fired I got a call to go to Chicago to
16:45
see if I wanted to go to um I go uh um
16:49
what the big station GCI GCI another
16:52
station and I was uh and I said no I
16:55
just want to stay in LA and figure it
16:57
out and so what year was that this was
17:01
probably 98 99 wow and I just I just
17:06
wanted and I didn't know what figure it
17:07
out meant but I wanted to stay MH and I
17:11
think maybe I then maybe by then I was
17:13
maybe I had got like some weekends at
17:14
power or something like that but uh uh
17:18
fa on love really is the one I was like
17:22
I want to write I knew I wanted to write
17:24
some people helped me Marlon way got me
17:26
a book Marlon got you a book Marin Mar
17:29
told me to read a book and and I wrote
17:31
this script you know everybody's like
17:32
I'm going to write a script so I know I
17:34
wrote Marlin told me to read this book
17:36
he gave it to me actually and then I uh
17:39
I wrote the script I was all excited so
17:41
I went to Marlon's house and I was like
17:43
did you know I had given it to him this
17:45
is when you had to print it out so I had
17:46
to drop the [ __ ] off and then I waited a
17:48
week and I went over to his house and uh
17:52
he's like he's like come on let's play
17:54
some Madden so we're playing Madden the
17:56
whole time and I'm just trying to get
17:58
through this game to see what's up with
17:59
the script thr interceptions I'm just
18:03
just I just want to get through oh my
18:05
gosh and Marlon kills me and then he
18:08
just looks and he goes so the script is
18:09
terrible wow I'm just telling you
18:12
straight up this is terrible uhhuh but
18:15
um you just got to keep writing your
18:17
first script is supposed to be terrible
18:19
and if you really want it you'll write
18:20
another another another so I was like
18:23
all right and then I told fison and
18:25
fison was like you should try to get on
18:28
uh p
18:29
parthood as a writer and then he put me
18:32
with towns and I remember I was sitting
18:33
at Robert Town Robert towns I was
18:35
sitting at Faison's house I think it was
18:37
Easter broke Townsen was there and
18:42
Robert said come by the show and pick up
18:44
a script and so I went and got the
18:47
script and he said now just put new
18:49
jokes in it and so I took it home wrote
18:54
a bunch of jokes scratching out writing
18:56
doing everything and then took it back
18:58
back up there the next day and two days
19:02
later Rob said uh okay come to the come
19:05
to the lot and he just walked me in the
19:07
writer's room and said this is Jesse and
19:09
he's going to be a writer and all the
19:12
writers looked at me like like I was the
19:14
devil and I didn't even I didn't have
19:16
enough to even understand that this was
19:19
wrong on every level I'm not in the
19:21
guild um you know he's towns Robert
19:24
towns is the star I look like a spy all
19:27
the things I don't know I just see a
19:29
room full of people and I just sat in a
19:32
room and I started listening I realized
19:35
that they're just talking about TV and
19:37
they're just making up stories what if
19:39
Faison does this and what if Robert does
19:41
that and then I just started pitching I
19:43
was like well I know fison likes this
19:46
what if and I just started adding to it
19:48
anyway I was in there for three weeks um
19:51
just doing that no money I knew not to
19:54
ask for anything because I just felt
19:56
like I knew it was like one weird
19:59
hookups that we do for each other that I
20:01
was like if I ask I could [ __ ] it
20:04
up and then so one day uh they came to
20:08
me and they they said uh you know you're
20:11
not in the writer's Guild Warner
20:12
Brothers found out uh there's labor
20:15
issues here and they walk me off the lot
20:19
and uh Townson said he goes no no no you
20:22
gonna be okay you g to be okay and uh
20:25
the showrunners who I had only met
20:27
during this three weeks said he's
20:30
contributed and we like him so then they
20:33
gave me a contract they said that they
20:35
gave me a a contract as if I went
20:38
through the Warner writing program and
20:40
they just made me a staff writer and
20:42
that was really the launch my
20:45
gosh God is awesome skinny kid got in
20:48
good got in so I got to say you know I
20:51
say all that to say townin gave me that
20:54
opportunity because when I was on the
20:57
beat I had and this is a true I don't
20:59
care what they say I had a nicer car
21:01
than Chris Tucker and Faison okay I had
21:04
a Mustang uh faon had a jacked up Monte
21:07
Carlo Tucker had a Jetta uhuh and so I
21:10
drove everywhere I would drive to the
21:13
comedy act I would drive com wherever
21:15
they were performing and we would hit
21:16
the clubs I drove this before Chris got
21:19
the uh Jackie CH he got the yeah he
21:22
Money Talks he got the Land Cruiser and
21:24
then it was over okay he had the better
21:26
car yeah when he when Money Talks came
21:28
Chris got that green Land Cruiser and it
21:30
was over uh but uh townzen would be with
21:33
us and Townsen would see me pitching
21:38
jokes to Chris and Faison and you know
21:41
saying this and that and um that's what
21:45
gave Townsen the confidence to give me
21:48
the opportunity to write on Parenthood
21:50
we never discussed anything I just knew
21:52
him as Robert Townson as an icon that
21:54
was like hanging out with us at a comedy
21:57
club I never I didn't even know a
21:59
writing job existed so the point to all
22:00
that is you just never know who's
22:02
watching wow man Jesse Collins here man
22:05
come on big I I just I remember when you
22:08
start going into that field and right
22:10
and that's when then you you lose
22:12
relationships right you know what I mean
22:14
cuz you're walking in a whole another
22:16
world now so some of those people from
22:17
the beat you gotta way you know what you
22:20
gotta way byebye too right and and
22:23
everybody looks like what are you doing
22:25
yeah what are you doing you look kind of
22:27
broke right now what's going on
22:29
and you're like you're trying to put
22:30
something together that's what I was
22:32
going to ask you how did you pay your
22:33
bills during that you you you had you
22:36
had a place where you know and kind of
22:37
feel like you should be but then you're
22:39
not being paid you know not to ask how
22:41
do you maintain your bills during that
22:43
time period for any artist that may be
22:45
listening right now I mean well first of
22:47
all you know I was in Studio C City one
22:51
bedroom apartment rent was
22:52
650 um which was amazing and this was
22:57
the time of when you could so you had
22:59
your unemployment form so then you would
23:01
just say oh yeah I applied to Target
23:03
they wern't hiring I applied to 7-Eleven
23:05
they was tripping and you would just
23:07
fill that out and then you got that uh I
23:10
think it was 800 you got that 800 every
23:13
two weeks so that covered so between
23:15
that raymen noodles and don't drive and
23:19
just that was it you know he was broke
23:21
he called Raymond Noodles that's the
23:23
bootleg ramen noodles ramen Raymond
23:27
Raymond was like 24 yeah yeah yeah you
23:29
were like you know you just got all
23:31
those packs and you just and that was it
23:35
I you know I was on a water cleanse
23:37
before it was hot that's what it Jesse
23:40
was juicing before it was called juicing
23:43
he was watering I was like you know now
23:46
they're like go on a water cleanse and
23:48
detox I was detoxing in 99 look at you
23:53
now man let's get this man a round of
23:54
applause we got Jessie Collins okay of
23:58
Jess see Collins entertainment here we
24:00
going to come back let's talk some Oprah
24:01
let's talk some Super Bowl let's talk
24:04
some ice cube big three yes okay let's
24:07
talk about it all let's talk about it
24:08
all okay 888 742 3345 get to know him
24:13
yeah give it up for him man Jesse
24:14
Collins is here the most sought after
24:17
producer in the game yo this is a great
24:20
story of how you went from Radio prowess
24:23
and how you broke into Hollywood uh with
24:26
a lot of great relationships with the
24:27
likes of Robert towns in but Faison
24:30
Chris Tucker you know a lot of the folks
24:32
you were hanging out with at that time
24:35
who are some of the other comedians
24:36
Martin was huge Martin was huge um who I
24:42
me geez Mark Curry was huge Mar Curry
24:45
salute to Mar curry curry
24:48
Sim um and then I mean everybody
24:51
everybody remember Martin remember that
24:53
was when Martin was still shooting the
24:54
show Areno was shooting the show Ario go
24:58
taping like the club you just went up
25:00
there you just hung out really I feel
25:03
sad for the security at all the Lots cuz
25:05
that was when you just rolled up you did
25:07
not have a pass you just went to the set
25:10
of Martin I'm here for Martin yeah no
25:13
you just be like you know at least if as
25:16
long as you said Carl Payne instead of
25:17
Cole you got on a lot if you said Cole
25:20
you probably weren't getting on but we
25:23
would just roll up there everybody
25:25
everybody at that time was there and
25:27
then you made the transition and then
25:28
you started doing a production yeah
25:31
right what was the first Big Gig you
25:35
got um to produce was it an award show
25:39
uh yeah it was uh BET's 20th the be
25:42
BET's 20th anniversary Jamie Fox hosted
25:45
uhhuh did you know what you were doing
25:48
at that time yeah I mean listen I was um
25:53
I had I I had just finished writing a
25:55
show Montel Jordan used to host a show
25:57
called mtown live yes I remember that
25:59
and so I was writing that for him and I
26:02
remember we was doing crazy ass sketches
26:04
I remember we did that was when Blair
26:06
Witch came out Blair Witch Project and
26:08
we talked Destiny's Child into doing a
26:11
Blair Witch where each one of the
26:12
members got killed or some you know
26:15
what oh my God crazy oh it was
26:19
craziness so so who got killed first I
26:23
think we might have killed Beyonce first
26:25
I think we went through I don't know it
26:27
was just made sense and they were all
26:29
looking for each other it was crazy it
26:31
was like it was a wild show and then um
26:35
we uh and then from
26:36
there uh again I had a crazy meeting one
26:41
of The Producers on that show was going
26:43
to do BET's 20th he was a line producer
26:46
his name was C Small he takes me in to
26:48
meet John cassette who was the EP and
26:50
I'm sitting there I'm supposed to I'm
26:51
interviewing to be that the writer the
26:53
only writer the head writer on the show
26:55
mean with just one meaning head writer
26:57
of myself mhm and so um I realized that
27:03
as I'm talking about bet that he wasn't
27:05
familiar with the network and what BET's
27:08
20th needed to be video soul rap city
27:10
all the tiger Donnie Simpson all the
27:12
things that were
27:14
important and I said you should make me
27:16
a um I just said you should make me a
27:19
producer and he said why and I said well
27:23
you're going to need Snoop and I know
27:26
Snoop and he was like okay you're a
27:29
co-producer and that was it that's how
27:31
it started wow that was the first
27:32
producer credit okay it was really
27:34
because of really because of Snoop who
27:36
was not in the room and Snoop doesn't
27:37
even know this I've I think I've told
27:39
him I've told we've done a lot of things
27:42
over the years but yeah I mean
27:43
definitely you told Snoop by saying that
27:45
is what made John uh made John flip so
27:50
let's fast forward to Super Bowl yes
27:52
okay the weekend was that the first that
27:54
was my first Super Bowl
27:56
yeah when this opport Unity arrived how
27:59
did it how was it presented to you uh
28:02
Dez Perez called me and said you're
28:05
doing halftime show and that was it that
28:07
was it that was it because you know I
28:10
mean she's not gonna say do you want to
28:14
yeah it's not like well we're thinking
28:17
about you she's like you doing halftime
28:19
show I was like tell me when I'll be
28:22
there but there's always uh a a motive
28:25
behind the madness one thing to get the
28:27
job but what you want to do with it
28:29
what's the story you want to tell like
28:32
did what was the mission of Rock Nation
28:34
with the halftime show I mean it's not
28:36
just to put the best artist on it it it
28:38
had to be more to it than just that
28:40
right I mean listen from a benefactor of
28:44
the mission I think it's
28:46
about they've gotten a hold of the most
28:51
watched 14 minutes in television history
28:54
MH
28:56
and they are making sure that it looks
29:01
different from when they took it over
29:03
exactly and so and not just on the field
29:06
but
29:08
behind and I I feel like uh I was a big
29:13
part of being one of those first faces
29:15
that they brought in with that weekend
29:17
show and then you know a lot of people
29:20
have come with it since then you know
29:22
Dion Harmon is also on that show
29:26
and that's all because because of uh Jay
29:29
and Dez and their vision for what the
29:33
halftime show needs to look like like I
29:34
said on the field and behind and the
29:36
behind is look I'm not GNA obviously
29:39
what's on the field is crucial yes you
29:41
know they're change they're it's the
29:44
best halftime shows ever but also
29:47
getting us in the club of the short list
29:50
of people that have been able to produce
29:52
something like that is it's a very it's
29:55
a very small group of people um who are
29:58
some of the names that have produced a
30:01
halftime show uh brazer gra no no no no
30:05
no I think it's mostly been variety guys
30:08
um and I believe I believe Don misher
30:11
did it for a couple of years um uh now
30:15
I'm blanking on who was that's okay skip
30:18
it you've been doing this a long time
30:20
but has it hasn't been most people have
30:23
it hasn't been a lot of people okay that
30:25
have done it and definitely nobody
30:28
colors ever done it I I love the
30:30
commentary at one point when people
30:31
start saying the Super Bowl halftime
30:33
shows just too black
30:37
I I love that I love it cuz there's no
30:40
such thing no to me no no you know and
30:44
it's been proven that didn't even
30:46
whether he was black or not that's Usher
30:48
and everybody watched it around the
30:51
world yeah facts exactly right for those
30:53
types of numbers it means everybody was
30:55
watching what does that how does that
30:58
make you feel in the end when you get
31:00
those results and know that you part of
31:03
the reason behind that success I mean
31:05
listen it just one it feels like you're
31:08
gonna get to do it
31:11
again always one and then um you just it
31:16
feels like you're breaking down barriers
31:18
because again it's like people say oh
31:21
it's a it's a black act doing a halftime
31:23
show no it's he is black but he is also
31:27
a Superstar uhhuh with one of the
31:30
greatest cataloges of all time and when
31:34
you play his records around the world
31:37
people of all cultures Creed shapes it
31:40
doesn't matter everybody loves those
31:43
records and so that's what we're showing
31:47
and it's been like that where the
31:49
weekend Dr and Snoop
31:52
Rihanna and and Usher was there any
31:56
thought when Rihanna was pregnant oh man
31:58
we're going to have to replace her we
31:59
got to find someone else no I mean
32:01
listen I when she uh when we were in
32:05
rehearsals and um we rehearsed the
32:09
flying and we were right down at
32:11
Microsoft it was interesting like
32:13
everybody's always where is Rihanna and
32:15
where like she was hiding in plain sight
32:17
we were right down at the Microsoft
32:19
right across from the Grammys we were
32:21
doing Grammy rehearsals and Super Bowl
32:23
rehearsals like same day wow same day so
32:26
it was it was just bouncing back back
32:28
and forth and um she went up 40t in the
32:31
air and thought it was fun so it was you
32:34
know everything was good everything was
32:36
good yeah and she was you know she's
32:38
Superstar she was ready you you what I'm
32:41
curious to what has been the hardest
32:43
pitch to sell to the NFL with with any
32:46
of these halftime show what's the
32:47
hardest thing you had to sell or they
32:48
just kind of back out of the way well
32:50
that's the beauty of it that's uh Sean
32:53
Carter does that oh okay he's a good
32:56
pitch yeah they got yeah you know I
33:00
don't know how he probably just texts
33:02
them I don't know but he uh that's uh
33:04
that's Jay Jay uh Jay makes that
33:07
decision and Jay discusses that with the
33:09
NFL and then comes back to us and says
33:11
this is who it is wow and we're like
33:14
perfect so for New
33:16
Orleans that's again huh that's gonna be
33:20
a good one Lil Wayne and friends I have
33:22
no idea yes you do J no idea wow sound
33:26
like you trying to get somebody I have
33:28
no idea I have no idea New Orleans Lil
33:32
Wayne and friends on the half time show
33:33
list listen I have no idea I have no
33:36
idea Cash Money No Limit is from New
33:39
Orleans is she kind of from new orle her
33:44
Jason by way of
33:47
Houston um listen
33:50
that's yeah that would be yeah um
33:53
Tracy's back in New
33:56
York looking around don't worry it's not
33:58
a ghost no
33:59
Supernatural Jesse was looking around
34:01
like who that listen um listen it's up
34:04
to uh it's up to Jay it's up to Jay Dam
34:08
they got him Heather he's gone I think
34:10
Jesse's doing the right thing oh yeah
34:12
absolutely absolutely abolutely
34:15
absolutely U uh well Jesse Collins is
34:17
here 888 742 3345 Tracy you want to dive
34:21
in yeah absolutely I love hearing
34:24
everything that's coming out of your
34:25
mouthy and I really want wanted to get
34:28
your thoughts on the storytellers of the
34:31
internet because when I peep that your
34:33
company um Jesse Collins entertainment
34:35
signed with CAA which big round of
34:37
applause for that that's news yeah
34:41
absolutely it made me think about um the
34:44
content creator reaa who went super
34:47
viral for doing the series um who the
34:50
[ __ ] did I marry right yes and a lot of
34:53
a lot of folks were like shocked
34:56
perplexed some congratul in her for
34:58
signing with
35:00
CAA um and some people's like conflict
35:03
with that is there's so many folks who
35:05
have put in a lot of work how does she
35:09
off of one viral you know moment get
35:12
signed this and other people who put on
35:14
a lot of work so you come in where I
35:16
would love to know would you take a
35:19
chance on like a on hit internet Wonder
35:23
in terms of producing their
35:26
story sure because I mean it's one story
35:31
still just because it's one story
35:32
doesn't mean it's not great right you
35:35
know it doesn't mean that it's not uh
35:39
inspirational doesn't mean that it's not
35:42
going to be compelling you know somehow
35:45
her story is going to get told um a lot
35:48
of people are chasing it and you know
35:52
obviously people are but it wasn't that
35:55
was a long moment I mean it was 51 parts
35:58
yeah so um it's I think it's it's her
36:03
time and it's her Destiny to have this
36:05
moment and I believe CAA will deliver
36:07
for her um so I think for other people
36:13
if it hasn't happened yet it doesn't
36:14
mean that it's not going to happen it
36:17
just hasn't happened yet but it's coming
36:21
I think what you can't do we were
36:23
talking about this earlier
36:26
is um I think a lot of people get on
36:31
shows and it and it becomes they just
36:34
start trashing other people and they
36:37
start talking about they got this and
36:39
they didn't deserve it and they got da d
36:41
d and that's just you know wasting your
36:44
own time it's slowing down your progress
36:47
to be talking in negative about somebody
36:50
else's progress cuz that just think
36:53
about it if it takes you 10 minutes to
36:55
talk about why she doesn't deserve it
36:57
that's 10 minutes less that you have to
37:00
figure out your own [ __ ] so now you're
37:02
10 minutes
37:04
behind and we all got the same 24 hours
37:07
and she is spending her 10 minutes
37:09
meeting with whoever to get her thing
37:12
further along period so you just now 20
37:14
minutes behind like you just it's just
37:16
was it's just Wast of time worrying
37:20
about the next man plate woring about
37:21
the next man's plate getting cold it
37:25
just doesn't make any um sense there's a
37:27
lot out here for everybody MH and that's
37:31
the other thing somebody's going to make
37:34
a deal with her she's going to get a
37:35
show look I do the show we we we
37:38
everybody wants to do our story but
37:41
that's one story somebody else is going
37:43
to say okay we can't have that but let's
37:46
find something
37:47
else and that might be
37:50
you if you're not too busy talking about
37:53
her if you're not too busy talking about
37:55
her you going to miss the boat right
37:57
it's like you know you got a root for
37:59
everybody you got a root for everybody
38:01
especially those in your field because
38:03
it's just going to it's just going to
38:05
widen things out
38:07
because you know if Warner Brothers
38:10
makes the movie Paramount's going to say
38:12
okay what's ours Netflix is gonna say
38:14
what's ours Amazon Apple all of them are
38:17
going to say oh that [ __ ]
38:19
worked what's our story what's our
38:21
version how do we connect to that
38:23
audience and you could be right there
38:25
with it yeah cuz re is busy doing her
38:27
she getting it um you you were behind a
38:31
new addition Series in the Bobby Brown
38:33
for bet correct uh do do they plan to do
38:36
more those it was a lot of success with
38:37
that why would we haven't seen more
38:39
those listen I would love and I think
38:41
there is a plan to do more and I know we
38:43
want to get some more biopics out into
38:46
the space yeah um I think you had uh you
38:51
know I don't even know why it just like
38:53
there was just a gap there's just a gap
38:55
but I think that there's definitely more
38:56
coming those things were were amazing
38:59
yeah okay let's talk Rhythm and Flo get
39:00
his man a round of appage all right
39:02
Rhythm and Flo is coming back um now um
39:06
Rhythm and
39:09
flow tell me the concept of Rhythm and
39:11
flow how this started and and how you
39:14
got involved so um so Jeff gaspen who
39:19
used to be uh who was chairman of NBC
39:22
and then he was uh he was then he was
39:25
out as a kind of a producer and he went
39:27
to Netflix and he sold the show Rhythm
39:30
and flow rap competition show and he had
39:33
it was him and uh and John Legend and
39:35
this guy and and Jeff Pollock these guys
39:37
all went in and sold this show and they
39:40
were looking for a production company to
39:43
come in and produce the show for them
39:45
they had already developed it they had
39:47
it they had sold it but they didn't have
39:50
they didn't have a production company
39:51
and they needed a a showrunner an EP
39:54
somebody that really knew hip-hop to
39:56
make the show work
39:58
and
39:59
um and so we were you know they started
40:03
doing the thing meeting with
40:05
everybody and we went in and met had a
40:10
great meeting or so we thought didn't
40:12
really hear anything and then um it's
40:16
funny I saw Mike Jackson who runs John
40:19
Legends uh film company Mike is John's
40:22
partner now mind you I'm and I say you
40:25
know we talk about it and I'm like you
40:27
know really want to do the show we met
40:29
at SoHo we I ran into him at Soho house
40:32
and uh and so Mike is like okay let me
40:35
talk to John now mind you I think John
40:37
Legends pissed at me because John had
40:40
done the lion Richie tribute for the BET
40:44
Awards yes and we jacked the
40:46
teleprompter up on them oh on purpose no
40:50
it it was a mistake it just the
40:51
teleprompter got messed up and and like
40:54
and like the words and off and John had
40:57
to like figure it out live it was
40:59
terrible okay it was terrible it was
41:02
terrible I thought John would never
41:04
speak to me again all right even though
41:05
it's like you know you you know this is
41:07
part of the thing as the producer you
41:09
like I don't run the teleprompter but
41:11
I'm responsible uhhuh and you know and
41:14
she's the woman that runs the
41:16
teleprompter is still there she's
41:17
amazing just everybody happens everybody
41:20
misses a shot yeah it happens you know
41:22
everybody misses a shot so but uh so I
41:25
thought I was dead in John Legend world
41:28
and um and they uh and he let it go and
41:32
he and John and Mike vouched they're
41:35
like no Jesse Jesse's the one that we
41:37
should bring in and we wound up on the
41:39
show and that was that first season and
41:42
it took off and then we were going into
41:44
season two and then I remember we were
41:46
in production for a week when Co started
41:49
and it was like that beginning of Co
41:50
like oh well going to go home for two
41:52
weeks mhm and then two weeks went to
41:54
another two weeks another two weeks and
41:55
then it was like okay we're done and
41:58
they shut it down for years and then it
42:00
popped in
42:02
France and um and then we we just
42:05
brought it back bringing it back yep it
42:06
comes out in uh October hey November
42:10
November November November who's that
42:13
voice right there Stacy Collins Jackson
42:15
she feeds him his lines you got to see
42:17
this man she's like I look at her I
42:19
asked him questions to look
42:21
at Stacy know Stacy know right uh well
42:24
congratulations with that man we had
42:25
your guy uh the man that the the the
42:29
rapper that you may have had something
42:30
to do with uh Eminem oh yeah Eminem yes
42:33
yes he's done okay so so Jesse was there
42:36
that's what I'm saying Jesse no I'm
42:38
taking you way back but Jesse was there
42:40
when M used to come up on the radio
42:42
station right exactly yeah now do you
42:44
recall when him before he was signed
42:46
before it was just like who is that yeah
42:49
it was just the who is that and it's
42:51
funny he told so uh he recently told
42:55
when we were we we he did the show mhm
42:59
this incredible episode and um he's
43:02
talking about being in La for the battle
43:05
that he lost yeah and he was saying that
43:08
he was getting evicted from an apartment
43:10
wow and he really needed that money MH
43:13
and so he went out and did that battle
43:16
and lost to some he I can't remember the
43:18
artist name he remember juice yeah was
43:21
it juice it might have been juice it was
43:23
somebody that uh had a lot of local
43:25
affiliations okay lot of local
43:28
affiliations and so it didn't matter how
43:30
he did he was going to win okay and so
43:34
uh and so mem lost and was just wasn't
43:38
going to get that money you know on some
43:42
[ __ ] this whole thing and gave that
43:45
tape and then the tape got the mixtape
43:48
mixtape got through and got to Dre and
43:50
the whole thing in the Restless history
43:52
yeah so we I was at that loss you were
43:55
there yeah and um um and that's I
43:59
remember calling King Tac that night yo
44:00
dude it's some dude named Eminem that's
44:03
crazy right and um and we start bringing
44:06
him to the show every week him Chino
44:09
Excel thirst Cho Xcel yeah we were
44:12
bringing him up every week you know just
44:14
really supporting him because we just
44:16
thought he was just supernaturally
44:18
incredible as a MC so it was a whole lot
44:20
of factors that played into that right
44:23
and here we are now on Shade 45 right
44:26
exactly 2024 who exactly right in LA and
44:30
we got you doing radio
44:32
again it's just crazy how [ __ ] connects
44:36
yes this is crazy how things connect
44:38
right Adrien Miller brought Bianca G
44:41
here Adrien used to be back there with
44:44
us all the time you know absolutely you
44:46
know so it's always was Adrian at Quest
44:50
yeah that Quest delicious vinyl I
44:52
remember Adrian had the first cool car M
44:57
Adrian had the Infinity Q45 that's right
45:00
he did he had the like we were all like
45:03
I had the Mustang Chris had the Land
45:06
Cruiser Adrian was like I'm above y'all
45:09
y' don't even know what this is it had
45:11
the little fly clock in it it was it was
45:13
it was like it was elevated he's always
45:15
been elevated There He Go come here come
45:18
on let's bring him in here and while we
45:19
Jesse remember everybody car yo we were
45:23
talking about your was it what kind of
45:25
car was it was it an infinity
45:27
oh the J30 yes yeah wow how do you
45:31
remember that I just remember I got in
45:33
that car I was like cuz you remember
45:35
people were like trying to get the 300
45:38
bz or the 190 Benz like everybody was
45:41
chasing that Ben or the or the or the
45:43
three series or whatever and this was
45:46
all like and then he pushed up in this
45:49
and I was like what what is it infinity
45:51
and he's like it's just different it's
45:53
just different we were going to Jamaica
45:54
House Jamaica about right we were going
45:57
to Jamaica House J Dave Ferguson was was
46:01
my roommate wow we that was the whole
46:04
connection with Jamaica House was he and
46:05
Howard did Jamaica House Jama right and
46:07
that was like that was one of the first
46:10
I'm trying to think I either first time
46:12
I saw a big perform was either it was
46:14
either Jamaica House or glamslam I can't
46:16
remember which I think it was glamslam
46:18
was it glamslam I remember him
46:20
performing at Glam slam he was here for
46:22
that time frame yeah and he definitely
46:24
did Glam slam with y'all
46:27
well that was with us T Us in the
46:29
Jamaica House thing was when Eddie and
46:31
Mike talked puff into him going out to
46:33
the party that they threw so that was
46:35
Eddie Donaldson and Mike Avery yeah Mike
46:38
Avery oh my God yeah we can go we we can
46:40
do this all
46:41
night like audience is like wait what
46:44
these are this is very Insider chy
46:47
Bell Bill remember bill yeah bigab John
46:50
stt stock there that was all our crew
46:53
Glam slam was Prince's Club so Prince
46:56
had a club
46:57
Glam Sam it was amazing Prince The
47:00
Artist Artist and so you would have
47:04
there would be the club and then you
47:05
never knew when Prince was just going to
47:07
pop up right and it would be and if once
47:10
he popped up that me it was open all
47:12
till 6 in the morning did you see when
47:15
he played with Mavis Staples and she
47:17
fell off the stage were you there that
47:19
night there that night you were there
47:21
that night there night remember that
47:22
night yo that was crazy like it just
47:24
turned into this like this jam session
47:28
yeah wait why did she fall she was going
47:31
in and she fell off and he did a solo
47:34
while they picked her up you know what
47:37
the show went on the show went on said
47:39
The Show Must Go On he went into this
47:41
like crazy solo while they got her back
47:44
I'll take you
47:47
there Glam slam like tribe performed
47:50
there I mean it was like rage performed
47:53
there ice cube um the Visionary yes Cube
47:57
Vision y created his own League The Big
48:00
Three yes and the big three is publicly
48:04
has you know had his yeah big round of
48:05
applause when I say that has had his
48:07
share of adversity um just trying to
48:09
launch off the ground as any new
48:11
business would but when you enter a
48:13
competitive field of marketplace you
48:15
might get some competition that might
48:17
try to make it harder for you yeah and
48:20
still and still he
48:22
prevails Ice Cube and you I read have
48:27
partnered up for a big three docu series
48:29
it's just true tell us about it I mean
48:31
listen it's what he's done with the big
48:34
three is amazing is it's changing
48:38
basketball it's given you know it's
48:40
nothing against the NBA Cube will say
48:42
it's nothing against the NBA we all love
48:43
the NBA yeah the The Big Three is just
48:46
different it's a different style of
48:47
basketball it's different players it's
48:50
uh it's a whole different experience and
48:53
um we want to take you inside that and
48:56
see what these players are going through
48:58
see how that what their life is I mean
49:00
people are playing big three basketball
49:03
around the world yeah and so we want to
49:06
tell that story we want to tell the
49:08
story of what what cube is going through
49:11
in this point in his life when he is uh
49:15
trying to build something and give U
49:19
give opportunity you know to people and
49:23
go it's really it's a little David David
49:26
and Goliath obviously the NBA is a
49:28
massive
49:29
franchise but you know cube is doing it
49:34
yeah he's making it happen you know and
49:36
this is like you know this is not uh
49:40
it's not ice cube Straight Out of
49:42
Compton roll it up in the office okay
49:44
like thing but he's he's doing it from a
49:46
business perspective and he's doing it
49:48
um in a way where it's just he's just
49:51
building it and it can't be stopped
49:54
because people love the product and
49:56
players love it and uh when it comes out
49:59
it's going to be amazing can't wait to
50:01
see you Jesse Collins is here man out of
50:03
all the awards shows that you've had a
50:06
chance to be a part of is there a moment
50:08
that stands out to you that you
50:10
personally that tugs at your heart and
50:12
that you proud to have been a part
50:15
of ah [ __ ]
50:19
um you know one particular moment on an
50:23
award show I mean
50:27
it's been so many yeah it's been so many
50:30
things that I've been blessed to be a
50:32
part of I think most recently I think uh
50:35
Busta getting his lifetime yeah AI award
50:38
being a part of that um I think he's
50:41
still giving his acceptance speech right
50:43
now I think I think he's still talking
50:45
right now should but like bus has just
50:49
deserved that for so long and it just
50:51
and it's and it's been a part of I would
50:54
say you know somewhat of a launching pad
50:56
Resurgence for him and uh that anytime
51:00
you can be a part of like those types of
51:03
moments um is special and then going
51:06
back I love being a part of like you
51:09
know Kendrick's early performances first
51:12
TV performances and and just the early
51:17
like swagger like us and the Grammys
51:19
where it was like they were all you bro
51:21
I was there that was crazy yeah um what
51:25
was that like like it that was such a
51:27
huge moment right that was Wayne TI yay
51:31
J Mia Mia who I think the craziest part
51:35
about that first of all I knew it was
51:37
like oh this is going to be history this
51:40
is going to be history this moment all
51:41
of them together waiting for this and
51:44
but then I think the thing that was wild
51:47
was MIA was in going into labor
51:50
backstage we had the Midwife and the and
51:52
the the paramedics ready and like she
51:55
was D like a week later so we were all
51:58
it it's funny cuz everybody you know
52:00
bunch of guys standing around going you
52:02
all right none of us know what to
52:04
do and she but the rappers J everybody's
52:07
just like looking cuz she's remember she
52:09
had the dress with the circle and the
52:11
whole thing and and she was like I'm
52:13
good and we were you know
52:16
terrified and um and she went out there
52:19
and she did it and then she went and had
52:21
the baby I think a couple days later
52:23
couple days later we were uh we were uh
52:26
that was that was crazy and I think um
52:30
there's just been a fortunately just a
52:33
lot of Great Moments um through the
52:36
years that I've been able to be a part
52:37
of like another Grammy one gold digger
52:41
and then the last one
52:43
um uh obviously when we did that Grammy
52:46
50 salute yes that was a monster uh
52:49
shout out to LL LL Quest love um
52:53
everybody was in that performance and
52:55
you know God did
52:56
with Jay we shot it outside at the table
52:59
the whole thing um just you know
53:03
incredible and then a ton of BET BET
53:06
Awards uh moments like I said with Busta
53:08
Beyonce Kendrick just it's been amazing
53:11
and I want to thank this man for uh
53:14
being a part of me doing the only bet
53:17
the only award show appearance I've ever
53:19
made was on the BET Awards the year that
53:22
you guys had me put curator Cipher yes
53:27
you remember that yes with dead press
53:29
lock oh that's right you remember that
53:32
yeah thank you thank you because it's a
53:35
lot of hip-hop award shows that happen
53:38
that we're not a part of you know I
53:40
remember that I was like I was like sway
53:41
I need this to be authentic and that's
53:44
exactly what you said I need just I'm
53:46
big on that yeah like I'm big on pulling
53:50
people in who truly are experts in the
53:54
space it's like you know you quest love
53:59
the Grammy 50 JD Jermaine de PR curated
54:03
the South it's just like you got to pull
54:06
everybody in and make it a community
54:08
thing to make it uh to make it work yeah
54:12
absolutely thank you I had a good time
54:14
on there man I got to publicly thank him
54:16
why is that what for the
54:18
Grammys I have Grammys now thank you and
54:22
more importantly for the Soul Train
54:23
award because that award for Anderson
54:26
pack yeah thank you of course you know
54:29
that was special Jess we love AP we we
54:32
do AP is uh AP is great contrary to
54:35
popular demand and belief what Soul
54:37
Train Awards may not ever be seen again
54:39
yeah but having an award is like nothing
54:42
else my mama loves that
54:44
one I heard that man absolutely
54:47
absolutely well hey Jesse listen okay
54:50
you got to come back man this be the
54:51
first of a continuous conversation love
54:53
to I love to I hope you enjoyed yourself
54:55
up here did I did I was nervous but I'm
54:57
glad you had no reason to be nervous
54:59
brother could but don't worry you
55:07
good
