Beanie Sigel's Shocking Truth About Surviving Gun Violence! | SWAY’S UNIVERSE

0:00
big round of
0:02
applause keep that going for
0:05
me that voice you heard in that promos
0:10
Angelic when you hear about peace is a
0:12
lifestyle that's a offshoot of Life Camp
0:17
Inc this person has been dedicated to
0:19
reducing violence in our
0:22
communities gun violence prevention
0:25
she's been finding incredible ways to
0:27
reach our people and the talk about
0:30
something that's really serious keep it
0:32
going man yeah we lost a lot of lives to
0:35
gun violence in our community I watched
0:37
it growing up in Oakland I've seen
0:38
people shot right next to me right I've
0:42
seen people die right next to me I
0:44
watched people die as du to gun violence
0:47
and so when I see someone dedicate their
0:49
life to eradicating gun violence I have
0:52
nothing but the utmost respect and honor
0:55
to have this woman on our show today for
0:57
the work that she's done people don't do
0:59
it is hard it does not pay yeah you know
1:03
you get a lot of doors slammed in your
1:05
face it does not pay you wonder why we
1:07
suffer over 650 mass shootings in 2023
1:11
when we have politicians who are
1:13
supposed to protect the community right
1:15
talk about gun violence prevention you
1:18
wonder why we had over
1:19
18,500 deaths due to gun violence in
1:22
2023 something ain't working something's
1:25
not working where do we start does it
1:27
start in Washington DC or does it start
1:29
in the household 13300 plus teens from
1:32
the age of 12 to 17 killed due to gun
1:35
violence in 2023 something's not working
1:39
4,000 deaths due to gun violence in 2024
1:42
90 plus mass shootings something's not
1:45
working in 2024
1:48
2024 gun violence
1:50
deaths Erica Ford give her a round of
1:54
applause when I say her
1:57
name has dedicated her
2:03
life to bring an awareness to gun
2:05
violence which is hard to do because you
2:08
have a political front that's Advocates
2:11
of keeping these guns in our
2:13
neighborhoods selling these weapons
2:16
these weapons I call them a mass
2:18
destruction when you have that many mass
2:20
shootings in a country these are weapons
2:22
of mass destruction so people are
2:25
fighting to keep these guns in our hands
2:27
I'm not saying you don't have the right
2:29
to protect yourself but this isn't what
2:31
we're talking about mass shootings on
2:34
College and school campuses this isn't
2:36
what we're talking about I want to
2:37
welcome her to the show for the very
2:39
first time Erica Ford to talk about her
2:41
gaming for peace initiative that she go
2:44
Erica welcome to the show Erica thank
2:46
you thank you
2:47
for thank you for having me your aura is
2:50
something
2:51
different I'm absorbing your energy
2:54
right now that's something different
2:56
right there and you brought my brother
2:58
with you yes you brought my brother with
3:01
you he my brother he at times he don't
3:04
even recognize it right this man right
3:06
here I've been a a fan of his absolutely
3:09
I've been a fan of his for a long time
3:12
and what made me a fan of his is his
3:14
realness when he first dropped that
3:17
truth album back in 2000 and and work
3:20
he's done since and um as as a result of
3:23
and I think it was 10 years ago to this
3:26
to this year that you was shot yourself
3:29
was it 10 years ago yeah 10 years ago he
3:32
was he was shot and had a lot of damage
3:35
done to him it scared us mhm it scared
3:38
me I didn't know about what was going to
3:40
become of my brother and over a decade
3:43
later you see him being an advocate
3:45
speaking out about gun violence he's
3:47
here with Erica Ford today um not only
3:50
that he speaks about it in his music we
3:53
learned about his life his Walk of Life
3:54
from all of these albums to be coming to
3:57
the solution all of these different
3:59
projects He always told his truth to me
4:01
there's not a Doper MC that ever came
4:03
out of Philly ladies and gentlemen he's
4:05
one of the greatest too if he ain't on
4:07
your Mount Rushmore that that's because
4:09
you don't have enough information you
4:11
haven't been listening to the right [ __ ]
4:14
okay matter of fact it's because you've
4:15
been listening to the wrong [ __ ] all
4:17
right I want to welcome him back to the
4:18
show this is my brother for Life give it
4:21
up for the one and only benie
4:23
seagull let's go let's go by SE give him
4:27
a standing
4:28
ovation
4:30
why not yo come on man absolutely n
4:33
Beans I'm giving this to you brother
4:36
come on man you here and just celebrated
4:39
his 50th birthday Beau here happy born
4:43
day God damn it we here yeah man I had
4:48
to give you a shot on your
4:50
50 come on man yes sir when you was 20
4:54
you didn't even see 50 no I ain't see 25
4:57
you didn't see why not though I mean
5:00
just from the environment that I grew up
5:02
in and and the circumstances I had to
5:04
deal with
5:06
yeah we a we we ain't look towards the
5:11
future M long as the night like we made
5:14
it through the night right d That's how
5:16
I grew up as long as you made it through
5:19
the night as long as we made it through
5:20
the night we'll worry about tomorrow
5:22
when it get there we was woring about
5:25
right then we couldn't worry about
5:28
yesterday that was history m M you know
5:30
that's saying yesterday was history
5:32
tomorrow is a mystery M so we deal with
5:34
the present so just enjoy this gift from
5:37
me but um yeah that's how I grew up man
5:41
but you now that you 50 like what we
5:44
with the knowledge yeah wisdom we
5:45
obtained through being on this planet
5:48
yeah let you understand that that wasn't
5:51
normal no that shouldn't have been
5:53
normal for a young man in his 20s to
5:55
think I don't know what tomorrow brings
5:57
due to the environment yeah yeah and and
6:00
and the threat in the environment was
6:02
getting getting killed yeah not only I
6:04
don't know I don't
6:05
care yeah I don't care about tomorrow
6:08
I'm worried about right now and getting
6:10
through tonight which goes along with
6:12
the business of
6:14
incarceration right so when you talk
6:16
about gun violence and you talk about
6:17
death there's a business around that
6:19
right and the business profits off of
6:22
the death and destruction of our
6:24
community and of our young people and so
6:27
it it makes a lot of people money yeah
6:29
for young people to go to jail you know
6:32
it makes a lot of people money for us to
6:35
go to jail
6:38
yeah wow you but how do you you can't
6:41
tell the hardest person to reach is the
6:44
person headed to jail sometimes you know
6:46
they they can't see what you know what
6:48
you see how do you communicate that
6:51
effectively I mean it's
6:53
it's I believe I can communicate that
6:56
with it just by sharing you know my
7:00
my situations I've been on both sides so
7:03
you know at this point like you said 50
7:05
I you know when you're a child you think
7:07
as a child because you understand as a
7:09
child but when you're a
7:11
man you know those childish things got
7:13
get put to the side
7:16
so I'm a person that been on you know
7:19
both sides of the fence you know I done
7:21
I done lost people from gun violence uh
7:24
the people almost almost lost me from
7:27
gun violence
7:28
and I can uh I can speak their language
7:32
you can speak what so what is it you say
7:34
because we we lost so many artists right
7:37
yeah in recent
7:39
years pop smoke never even got a chance
7:42
P&B Rock that's Philly you know what
7:46
what what language what do you say like
7:48
how do you tell somebody man you might
7:50
want to find another route to to your to
7:52
solve your problem than using guns can
7:56
you say that you definitely can and it's
7:58
a cultural thing right a lot of us you
8:01
know I've run into a lot of people I
8:04
can't tell them that I can't tell them
8:05
that you can tell them when to pick up a
8:07
gun you could tell them when the cell
8:09
crack you could tell them how to get in
8:10
the game but now to save their life you
8:13
all of a sudden I can't tell them that
8:15
and that's why for me you ain't really
8:18
about the streets if the only thing you
8:20
doing is selling people to death and
8:24
incarceration you're not about these
8:25
kids you're not about the streets right
8:27
and so when you talk about the culture
8:30
of celebrity death right that's another
8:34
people are profiting off of that right
8:37
the people are these record companies
8:39
are pushing music that is building beef
8:43
between people these social media
8:46
platforms are pushing beefs that are
8:48
building beefs between individuals and
8:51
we've been so conditioned as our brother
8:54
said earlier to ignorance we don't think
8:57
there's another way cuz we want the
8:59
likes we're so caught up in the
9:02
attention of somebody else as opposed to
9:04
the love for our own life that we end up
9:07
dead before we even realized we was
9:09
alive
9:12
wow end up dead before we even realize
9:15
we were alive that voice is Erica Ford
9:18
um and she has an
9:21
amazing organization and she's created
9:24
incredible initiatives to deal with this
9:26
what we're talking about right now gun
9:28
violence can you talk about gaming for
9:30
peace and what that's all about and when
9:32
is it uh gaming for peace is this
9:34
Saturday we had 512 young people from
9:37
across the United States compete for a
9:40
$20,000 pool prize and the four
9:43
finalists are coming to to Queens
9:46
Saturday York College to do the final
9:49
competition and so it's it's really
9:51
about and I really wanted one of the
9:54
young people like really from the hood
9:56
to win this you know um cuz we are Ed
9:59
with organizations throughout the United
10:01
States but once again people are so
10:03
conditioned I can't do that right and so
10:06
we're entering into this Gaming Arena to
10:10
get young people see you can do that not
10:12
only can you win play the game and win
10:14
but you can build the game you could be
10:17
the marketing team you could be the
10:19
music producer you could be all of the
10:20
different business lines that come along
10:23
with the game production like we need to
10:25
get in there we need to get our kids
10:27
access to other things so that they not
10:29
outside on the court yeah they need op
10:32
they need options right it's a lot of
10:34
money in the gaming industry beans you
10:36
know about that gaming
10:37
money I don't know about the money part
10:40
yeah yes you play not not yet yo man
10:43
they making millions in gaming bro it's
10:45
it's uh I know a little bit about it
10:48
we'll talk G $100 $100 Man games cost a
10:52
$100 the first time you get it yeah yeah
10:55
that's shahim Reed he's with us to the
10:57
give it up for Shah M of the s in the
11:00
morning team shahim always been here for
11:02
us he's been an ambassador we also have
11:04
the deputy director of the first ever
11:06
White House Office of gun violence
11:08
prevention he was also the co-chair of
11:09
DC for Obama um President Obama in 2008
11:13
please welcome the one and only Gregory
11:15
Jackson is on the line with us right now
11:17
Mr
11:18
Jackson what's up sway what's up
11:20
everybody good morning sir um good
11:23
morning good morning let's talk about
11:25
your involvement with
11:27
this with gaming for
11:31
yeah so six months ago the president
11:33
created the first ever White House
11:35
Office of gun violence prevention and
11:37
we've been working on this issue every
11:38
single day and one of the major things
11:40
that we focused on is investing in youth
11:42
mental health we actually made the
11:44
biggest investment and youth mental
11:46
health in American history uh as part of
11:49
this office's work but we know that we
11:51
also have to think about how do we make
11:52
sure that folks are thinking about
11:54
untraditional ways to deal with their
11:56
challenges or navigate through conflicts
11:59
um and frankly gaming is a big part of
12:01
that you know exploring new places and
12:03
meeting new people but also whether it's
12:06
racing or competition you know so many
12:08
of us can exercise and work through our
12:10
feelings and emotions through gaming on
12:13
top of it being fun on top of it making
12:14
money and so we're just excited to
12:16
partner with with Eric Ford on this
12:18
peace of gaming recognizing is hitting
12:20
two goals is creating constructive ways
12:22
for folks to navigate through their
12:24
emotions but also uh elevating the
12:26
importance of peace knowing that gun
12:28
violence is a number one cause a death
12:30
for youth in America so we got to
12:31
elevate this message as much as we can
12:34
what in what ways is the administration
12:36
do you feel um has been able to approach
12:38
the mass shootings like we don't even
12:40
hear we had 650 plus mass shootings in
12:43
2023 we we didn't see 650 headlines in
12:47
the media and it's almost like the gun
12:50
conversation uh has dissipated has been
12:53
swept under the rug other things have
12:55
taken priority but I feel like we should
12:56
be able to do more than one thing at
12:58
once
13:00
what what kind of things are the
13:01
administration doing to you know Rectify
13:04
these mass
13:05
shootings yes so you know it might not
13:08
be in the headlines every day but our
13:10
office is working on this every single
13:12
day uh This president's actually moved
13:14
forward 38 executive actions that's more
13:17
executive actions on gun violence than
13:18
any president in history in 2022 and
13:21
Erica Ford was a big part of this we
13:23
passed the first law on gun violence in
13:26
nearly 30 years that included $15
13:28
billion in resources to help address gun
13:30
violence in all its forms suicides mass
13:33
shooting individual violence domestic
13:36
violence Community violence and what
13:38
we're working on right now is building
13:39
out a FEMA style response to help
13:42
communities recover from mass shootings
13:44
and I'm actually the White House
13:45
coordinator of that response and we have
13:47
over 12 government agencies that now
13:50
will help communities reopen schools uh
13:53
resources for businesses to reopen
13:55
emergency Mental Health Resources and
13:57
grief counseling emergency law
13:59
enforcement and also just making sure
14:01
that the entire Community is recovering
14:03
faster I mean our team was in Leon Maine
14:06
when that shooting happens we were
14:08
deployed to Kansas City when the Super
14:10
Bowl Parade shooting happen we even
14:12
deployed to to Philly uh and help and
14:15
supported the mayor when they had those
14:16
two two bus shootings uh with teams
14:18
which again didn't make CNN headlines
14:21
but this white house administration was
14:23
working directly with the mayor on
14:24
recovering and responding and so we're
14:27
at every single one of these situations
14:29
whether it's FBI whether it's our health
14:31
and human services or Department of
14:33
Education we are putting more resources
14:35
in helping communities than ever on top
14:37
of our prevention work and one big thing
14:40
on mass shootings is we found that 76%
14:43
of school shootings the guns are coming
14:45
from the home not necessarily some
14:47
Boogeyman in the alley but they're
14:49
coming out of nightstands and under
14:50
pillows and out of closets and so that's
14:53
why we launched the first ever Federal
14:55
National safe stores campaign with the
14:57
Department of Education and the
14:59
Department of Justice we've challenged
15:00
every Public School principal and
15:02
superintendent to start educating
15:04
parents and teachers about the urgency
15:06
of safe storage Department of Justice is
15:08
rolling out resources and guidance and
15:11
other agencies are actually giving away
15:12
storage devices to to Americans all over
15:15
the country yeah because we know that if
15:17
the guns are coming from the homes we
15:18
got to do better about securing guns
15:20
even if someone has already made that
15:21
decision to have one okay um listen man
15:24
I appreciate you calling in Mr Jackson
15:27
um and then when you come to town maybe
15:29
come by and see us in
15:30
person okay yes sir I don't care I don't
15:33
care what anybody say sway you always
15:34
got the answers bro mean you work with
15:36
the president I know you know you in the
15:38
highest office you in the highest office
15:41
you know
15:42
it let's go let's go Greg we appreciate
15:45
you you're a citizen man s in the
15:47
morning all right we going to come back
15:48
man I want to talk with Erica too about
15:50
a little bit about her background and we
15:52
got Vinnie seagull here we celebrating
15:54
yes we are celebrating play my joint one
15:57
of the best ever
16:00
the best ever I say these things because
16:02
I mean
16:04
it and my word has value hea be
16:09
absolutely I've been saying this for you
16:11
since we've been on this show I've been
16:13
playing that one% I the truth came out
16:16
2000 man we're
16:18
celebrating a couple decades of an
16:21
artist that's been delivering nothing
16:24
but gyms Bennie seagull is here give
16:27
that man a round of applause wow when
16:29
you listen we're coming up on the 25th
16:33
anniversary of the
16:35
truth um that's crazy we
16:38
had PMD from EPMD here recently and and
16:42
he was speaking about the importance of
16:44
celebrating the classic projects for the
16:47
fans who came up in the game with you
16:50
what what kind of ways did you celebrate
16:52
this
16:54
anniversary well me and uh storm we
16:56
about to launch a 25 year anniversary uh
16:59
tour
17:01
of the album being released wow [ __ ] get
17:04
that around over need that we need that
17:07
about to bring that is is that going to
17:09
be a state property included thing n
17:12
it's going to be a beanie seagull
17:13
experience a beanie seago experience
17:16
yeah uh when you reflect back in those
17:19
times U what do you remember about
17:21
making this
17:22
album
17:26
uh being on that seaw
17:29
know halfway in the street halfway
17:31
trying to do this and
17:33
just just giving it what I had you know
17:38
what I mean I didn't know I was going to
17:39
be a a real hip-hop artist I thought it
17:41
was one and done you thought it would be
17:44
just just that this album and that was
17:46
it yeah I didn't even know it was going
17:48
to be this album just the way I even got
17:50
into the game you know I
17:53
uh know I was rapping in the hood like
17:56
quietly because at that time from where
17:59
I was at it wasn't cool to be a rapper
18:02
what part of Philly was
18:05
that really in South Philly so I had to
18:09
do that like outside of my neighborhood
18:11
like yeah it wasn't it wasn't cool to uh
18:14
it was it considered corny
18:17
yeah damn who I was like that was a
18:20
talent that I had but the other things
18:22
that I was involved in like some of the
18:24
people didn't even
18:26
believe that you know that was me mhm
18:30
they like you doing
18:31
what a man you tripping like it was yeah
18:35
it was like that when when did you start
18:37
just feeling like you was going to take
18:39
it serious because I I remember man I
18:41
don't know even if you remember being I
18:43
had to come down to Philly and like kind
18:45
of find Beanie to to do an interview I
18:47
forget who it was for I don't even think
18:49
it was for MTV I think it was one of the
18:51
magazines or something like that cuz
18:53
this was like
18:54
99 or something like that and I had to
18:58
like
18:59
we had to go to one like one of the
19:01
deepest darkest corners of Philly to to
19:03
find beans do the interview yeah yeah I
19:07
remember that I remember us walking down
19:09
the street and everything yeah yeah so
19:11
at that time you didn't foresee a rap
19:13
career nah I wasn't even looking for one
19:16
that makes sense cuz in the truth it
19:17
always I always wondered why you said I
19:20
I didn't even chase this that's WR I
19:22
didn't even chased this dream yeah I
19:24
never unlik who did I'm like why would
19:26
he say that I me me and DJ PR had a
19:29
conversation about that line before real
19:31
talk and I was like wow like he didn't
19:34
know but thank you for clearing it up
19:37
cuz I we had a whole convo about it it
19:40
wasn't even like when when you met um
19:42
rock that wasn't even your meeting right
19:45
no that was uh Philly most and it's
19:47
crazy cuz I met them probably
19:50
about I'm going say two two weeks prior
19:54
to that wow yeah so he he goes to
19:57
another person's meeting and they like
20:00
and that's how this guy is nice that's
20:02
how you got to the rock
20:05
yeah who was at the meeting was dope too
20:08
I ain't G Lie from the
20:11
rock it was Jay uh big Dane was there oh
20:16
[ __ ] you had the big three to short it
20:19
was actually in the studio Jay and Dan
20:21
was I mean Jay and uh to short was
20:23
recording it was all good a week
20:27
ago H really too short the
20:31
Oakland icon was there yes sir y'all
20:34
knew Oakland had to have something to do
20:36
with going to bring up S now you got to
20:38
take off your shirt come on with the
20:41
jacket I [ __ ] with beans I knew it was
20:44
something means you could have left that
20:46
part
20:47
out part part of the story absolutely
20:50
the history cuz I was like over there in
20:53
the cut and Wayne just sitting there and
20:57
I could tell J like we we came up and
21:00
Jay I don't even think he knew we was
21:02
coming M or you know so we is in another
21:06
room or we Wen we weren't supposed to
21:08
meet at the studio m and it was it was
21:12
it was it was that they was recording
21:14
that and I wasn't there to meet nobody
21:19
uh banik from Most Wanted after we met
21:24
he was like we exchanged numbers he was
21:26
like yo I got a meeting we going be up
21:29
there and he didn't even come to the
21:30
meeting wow yeah he told me he was like
21:34
yo up New York he was like yo you nice
21:36
and I was like that was something just
21:39
you know a little notching about
21:41
something that I do you know I mean Jack
21:43
of all trades thinking I can just do
21:45
anything when I was young uh went up
21:49
there
21:50
and yeah it was that was it rap and it
21:53
was history and I remember after it was
21:57
over I'm two short lean back in the
22:00
chair he want
22:01
this he passed me his car and I had it
22:04
and I was cool with that yeah I was cool
22:07
with being able to take two shark card
22:10
to the hub cuz now I got some physical
22:12
evidence like yo I'm telling you I just
22:14
was up there with these [ __ ] yeah like
22:17
look two shark gave me his card watch
22:19
I'm about to call
22:20
them I can just say that to the homies
22:23
and I was good did but you see the
22:25
mindset right speak on it it's the
22:27
science right he first of all he said he
22:30
never saw living to 25 now he's
22:32
celebrating the 25th anniversary of a
22:34
song album right right so on then then
22:37
it's like I never like I never saw that
22:40
as my
22:41
reality right and then what he wanted to
22:44
take to the hood was the flash yeah y
22:48
was the flash that's that's the necklace
22:51
that's the watch right yeah I got his
22:52
card I know him yo I know him that's
22:55
what we like to do right and that's the
22:57
whole cultural mindset said that we got
22:59
to work with folks to get out of that
23:01
they conditioned us to get in M right
23:04
because the homies yeah the homies speak
23:07
on that the the the what Erica just said
23:09
it
23:10
wasn't just that mindset it wasn't cool
23:14
yeah to who right the same people that
23:17
said it wasn't cool like yeah they going
23:20
crazy over it right they had a dream and
23:24
and not only they going crazy they
23:25
wanted every dime you had oh of course
23:28
and wanted to go to every show that you
23:30
had see people don't have the
23:33
understanding to see greatness because
23:36
they never saw greatness and so they
23:39
think that the life that they live in in
23:41
the communities that they live in that
23:43
is conditioned for you to live like that
23:45
is how they supposed to be and if they
23:47
make it out it's it's it's bad yeah it's
23:51
bad right if we change our conditions
23:53
it's bad right and so they don't do
23:56
nothing when you talk about like you
23:58
talked about
23:59
electoral politics right but people get
24:01
arrested by a district attorney or judge
24:04
they gets voted into office just the the
24:08
the the cats in the Streets Could Turn
24:11
those elections just vote them out right
24:14
but we don't see the power and so that's
24:16
why we're doing these gaming for peace
24:18
symposiums and conversations and events
24:21
because we got to get all our people to
24:24
wake up we got to get all of our people
24:27
to wake up and and and and we have you
24:29
asked before how do you do it it's
24:32
incredible messenges like beans like
24:34
beans right right it's it's coming on
24:36
shows like this uhhuh it's credible
24:38
messages like Erica Ford too let's give
24:40
you a round of applause cuz cuz we we
24:43
often this is somebody who grew up in
24:44
Queens around the era Russell Simmons
24:46
Run DMC yeah salt and pepper I know you
24:49
got a deep rooted history my one of my
24:51
brothers we had Lea Steinberg here yeah
24:54
and uh when I was younger Tupac and I
24:57
used to go around High School in
24:58
Northern California speak to the kids
25:01
thata steinber would cook up you brought
25:04
Tupac the Queens right yes 30 years ago
25:07
June 16th it's going to be 30 years
25:09
uhhuh and the messaging was then what
25:12
was the to streets right is around you
25:15
know take it back a couple of Tupac
25:19
Supreme stretch Chaz from blackand
25:22
entertainment they all sat in my living
25:23
room and came up with this code that
25:26
they were enhancing it from the jail cuz
25:28
it came from the jail from matul and SE
25:31
Dingo and others but they put together
25:34
how they were going to implement it on
25:35
the streets and how they were going to
25:37
talk to young people who didn't nobody
25:39
else want to listen to did you say PR
25:42
yes you got to explain that to the you
25:44
know this is a national broadcast so
25:46
Supreme is who everybody raps about so
25:49
when he talked before about the streets
25:51
didn't want it wasn't cool to rap
25:54
Supreme was one of the top drug dealers
25:56
in New York City m and the rappers were
26:00
under him like it he was the guy and
26:03
they would come and hang out with him at
26:04
at that time right and so that's what
26:07
beans is talking about when he says it
26:09
wasn't cool to be a rapper because the
26:11
drug dealers had all the money right and
26:14
so PR sat down with you know Tupac Chaz
26:19
and some people could you know remember
26:20
stretch yeah who who also from Queens
26:24
who was subsequently killed um and they
26:28
said sat down and they came up with the
26:29
code and talked about going to different
26:30
places and so after that we had the
26:33
concert in in um at thing Roy Wilkins
26:37
Roy Wilkins park yeah and um PR did this
26:41
whole magazine for folks in jail that
26:43
they started to do that's they they
26:45
continued on that level and I had to do
26:47
all the work of course right yeah yeah
26:50
you know cuz that's where Freeman was
26:52
and and to this day right it we become
26:54
credible because of people like that you
26:57
know they give the stamp like y'all
27:01
don't want this life right and so and
27:03
and back in the days that was something
27:06
that a lot of the ogs did they they
27:09
redirected those young people with
27:11
Talent protected the neighborhood like
27:14
although that we were having this
27:15
conversation the other day the death
27:17
numbers were higher but innocent and
27:20
it's it's hard to say that right but the
27:23
people who were killed on the majority
27:26
of level were people in the game in life
27:29
yeah right um now you see random random
27:33
people being killed it's Reckless
27:36
they're young they're unconscious and
27:39
they're not even
27:40
shooting I'm not justifying nobody
27:43
shooting nobody but they not shooting
27:45
over nothing yeah nothing yeah you know
27:49
and so it is it is imperative that we
27:52
wake them up by all means necessary you
27:54
know so what did you see for yourself
27:57
cuz you always hear hear our male
27:59
version of what the environment was like
28:01
and what we could see like with being
28:03
said I I never thought about 50 either
28:05
you know what I mean like when I was a
28:07
younger man how did you see your future
28:10
growing up in Queen did you grow up in
28:11
Queens yes as as a black woman how did
28:14
you see what did you see for your future
28:16
so to be so December 12th 1987 was the
28:20
day that I started doing this work yeah
28:23
that day I was supposed to go take the
28:25
test to be a crooked cop cuz my desire
28:28
was to be a crooked cop I was going to
28:31
inform the drug dealers of this was your
28:34
dream yes you know
28:38
what I got to
28:41
get you from the hood you think
28:45
different because told you you know and
28:48
and I was going to go do I had this
28:50
whole vision of being a crooked cop
28:53
right and and instead I went to my
28:56
friend's house after the party and I saw
28:59
a flyer for the Tana broley rally and a
29:02
rally around Folks up in Goan jail they
29:04
were spraying water on them and dressed
29:07
in KKK and so I was like yo I want to go
29:09
to that I didn't know what it was I had
29:11
just came from the party I was like I'm
29:12
not going to that [ __ ] long story short
29:15
I went to that [ __ ] and farakhan was
29:18
there Jesse Jackson Al Sharpton Biola
29:22
plumber Sunny like all of the big names
29:25
in the Black Power movement at that time
29:27
and and that was my first exposure to
29:29
that prior to that I was going to
29:32
parties and just like you said standing
29:34
next to somebody and they'll get shot
29:37
killed we was we were in mass shootings
29:40
back then yeah yeah we just ain't
29:42
calling mass shootings right and so I
29:45
was in more mass shootings before I
29:47
graduated from high school wow than most
29:49
people are today and and I saw the
29:52
impact of these death and cost because
29:56
remember they went to jail for 30 40 25
30:00
years right and so that had a traumatic
30:02
impact on their kids and their family
30:06
and so I I luckily did not become a
30:09
crooked cop yeah I'm glad that didn't
30:11
work
30:12
out ill play I became conscious and I
30:16
never looked back you know and so I was
30:20
able to help break the cycle yeah of
30:22
some of those young people's children
30:24
some of my pe's children not going into
30:27
that life and doing something different
30:29
you know black just son black just is
30:32
another person rest in power who
30:34
everybody raps about mhm his son like I
30:38
saw the emptiness in his son and so he
30:41
was really a strong motivation behind a
30:44
starting life Camp okay right so so
30:47
prior to that it was the code Foundation
30:49
that I did with Tupac but I partnered
30:51
with jaru and and some of those CS from
30:54
the Inc BJ and we started life Camp
30:57
because we wanted to do something
30:59
different with those kids and and
31:01
luckily we were able to do that and so
31:03
his you know one of the young he started
31:06
a yoga program and of course he was
31:09
teased and all of that yoga's gay yoga's
31:11
this yoga's that but he did it yoga is
31:15
gay exercising is gay nobody did it back
31:19
then okay nobody did it back then so
31:22
once again the unconsciousness of the
31:24
hood right yeah and so he be they they
31:27
ended up end up training the Kansas City
31:29
Chiefs that was the first year they won
31:31
the Super Bowl so we take all credit
31:33
that's why my home so
31:35
limber exactly you know what and then
31:39
they um you know trained across the
31:41
world right they were able to travel
31:43
across the world open up their own Dream
31:45
Cafe and do a lot of positiveness and
31:48
really expand on their you know career
31:51
of yoga and and meditation and really
31:54
just redirect a lot of the young people
31:56
who normally would have just became drug
31:58
dealers yeah yeah yeah um man that voice
32:02
is Erica Ford we're talking about gaming
32:04
for
32:05
peace this weekend coming up that's this
32:07
weekend at York College April the 6 be
32:10
there uh Lola Brooke is supporting this
32:12
movement Shmi Moore is Mike Michel
32:15
Bridges is weno is salute to wo shiggy
32:19
is as well love shiggy go ahead Heather
32:22
no I'm Erica thank you so much and shout
32:24
out to be big fan always I never met you
32:26
before but never met no I never met him
32:30
oh my God she talk about you like your'
32:33
best friends yo when he said have it be
32:35
I was like right
32:37
right no it's always been a fan thank
32:40
you it's it's my honor um you Erica as
32:42
well it's so funny that you're talking
32:44
about Queens my husband grew up in
32:46
Queens and uh he grew up in Queensbridge
32:49
and it's interesting to me because
32:50
growing up in Queensbridge he he told me
32:53
he hated when he moved out of the
32:55
projects and I couldn't understand the
32:56
mentality at all I was was like wasn't
32:58
you happy he's like nah we went from
33:00
Queensbridge to Southside and you have
33:03
no idea what that was like he act he
33:05
told me was actually safer in
33:07
Queensbridge than it was in Southside
33:09
and I was like what was there that was
33:11
so
33:12
bad and so all of these names that
33:15
you're naming I knew through my husband
33:19
and you know telling me what was like
33:21
growing up in Southside Jamaican queens
33:23
during that time and a cop got shot by
33:25
Ed Edward Burns and it was this whole
33:27
cop shot he broke it all down and it's
33:29
interesting to me like she's only
33:31
talking about one neighborhood and
33:33
section but then there's Queensbridge
33:35
then there's this and and this mentality
33:37
is going just in one burrow in New York
33:40
City you know and how do you escape then
33:43
if your family is trying to move from
33:44
the projects and you thinking that you
33:46
made it but you move into a house in
33:48
Southside Jamaica Queens and it's worse
33:50
you going to sleep every night listening
33:52
to gunshots you know and it's the same
33:54
in in Mississippi in North Carolina New
33:58
Jersey in Miami
34:01
Philadelphia Oakland everywhere they
34:04
have us yes everywhere they have us
34:07
every past Martin Luther King
34:09
Boulevard it's the resources aren't
34:12
there they're invisible it's food not
34:14
insecurity it's food Injustice right
34:17
it's miseducation it's job insecurity
34:21
it's you know the the toxins in you see
34:24
me gasping for air right now yeah right
34:26
I noticed that because I sometimes I
34:29
have problems breathing right why why in
34:32
America do I have problems breathing
34:35
right and so and it ain't Co right even
34:38
though Co like that's a whole another
34:40
conversation but the conditions for our
34:45
people have to change change you know
34:48
and so one could say moving from the
34:51
Housing Development because they were
34:53
Community right they felt protected from
34:56
each other knew
34:58
each and so it was easy it was it was
35:02
communal but then when they move
35:04
someplace else but they think they're
35:06
doing better they're isolated they have
35:10
no one to tap into for that you got my
35:13
back right it's an unknown territory so
35:16
psychologically they feel
35:19
traumatized right and once you're
35:20
psychologically
35:22
traumatized then as we saw the young
35:24
lady when she was on
35:26
interview last week with the mayor mhm
35:29
she was talking about the safety in the
35:31
subway once you're TR psychologically
35:33
you don't you're not safe right and so
35:36
that's what what is happening around and
35:38
so even going back to gaming that's why
35:39
kids stay in the house and game safe
35:42
right I used to be the one like get out
35:44
that house go play go play get out but
35:46
really there's no safety
35:48
outside right and so we have to we got a
35:50
lot of work to do it's been a lot of
35:52
success uhuh throughout the United
35:54
States we just graduated a Class part
35:57
parip with G and partnership with the
35:59
the University of Chicago 30 our first
36:02
cohort 31 students at the White House
36:06
right who are learning this work taking
36:08
it back to their cities 21 different
36:09
cities and so there's people like Greg
36:12
said the White House and the federal
36:14
government has put a lot of money in
36:16
this work and so it's
36:19
growing but there's a lot more to go
36:22
because when you look at a budget of New
36:25
York City the police department
36:28
makes a billion I'm going just say a
36:32
billion we make a million if we do it
36:34
like that right and so and sometimes we
36:38
we're on the front line we're there we
36:40
are taking these guns out these young
36:42
people here we working with them 24
36:44
hours a day seven days a week we're
36:47
finding programs which we're finding
36:49
training therapeutic services because
36:52
this is generational trauma yeah that
36:55
we're talking about right and so you got
36:58
to
36:59
invest for something to really work you
37:02
got to test it you got to prove it right
37:05
and so there's a breakdown of what the
37:09
government is doing when it comes to the
37:11
the
37:12
local but we got to keep going I'm not
37:16
going to I'm passing a baton on Sunday
37:19
so somebody else is going to keep going
37:21
okay Marvin over there looking to be
37:22
like but you never passed the Baton
37:25
Erica for you always going to be involv
37:26
Marathon okay Samar Sam my leg is my leg
37:29
is I ran a good leg yes you did I ran a
37:32
good leg yeah yes you did I'm going to
37:35
take one or two calls and ask one or two
37:37
more questions we got Bennie seagull
37:38
here Erica Ford is here as well U I'm
37:41
going go with Erica in Los Angeles go
37:42
ahead what's up
37:45
Erica Eric this Eric oh Eric my bad I
37:48
got the no no problem LA and the Eric
37:51
put it together it's okay you know Oak
37:54
education my bad e what up e what's your
37:56
what's your thoughts
37:58
and I first of all I just want to say
38:00
good morning to everyone good morning
38:01
sir all right and I want to and Eric I
38:04
want to let you know you're not on the
38:06
radio this morning just because they're
38:07
trying to fill the spot swaying the
38:09
morning been touching on this subject
38:11
for a while trying to find a solution to
38:12
this matter and um I um I I grew up in
38:17
Compton I work in Compton every day and
38:20
the issue with these with the youngsters
38:22
getting these guns is something that I
38:24
tried to hit Mike Muse there was a topic
38:25
on the show some back some time back
38:28
and I'm just wondering how come people
38:29
aren't pushing Biometrics and what that
38:31
is is a gun only activates to the owner
38:34
the gun through a fingerprint method and
38:36
that way if someone grab gets a gun that
38:38
doesn't belong to the owner the gun
38:40
won't activate I just really wants
38:43
people to start pushing that the new gun
38:44
sales because I don't know how you keep
38:46
guns out of uh the hands of of anyone
38:49
now especially when you can go print
38:50
guns with 3D making machines you know
38:52
these the ghost guns or whatnot but just
38:54
want to get that out there so hopefully
38:56
so we can try to
38:58
you know attack the gun manufacturers
39:00
and try to find a way to uh prevent
39:02
misuses of of weapons when you talk gun
39:06
manufacturers and you talk um the NRA
39:08
that seem to be the taboo subject Erica
39:11
why is that why nobody they got so much
39:13
money and they funding all of these
39:15
folks from across the United States uhuh
39:17
you know and so that's that's why you
39:19
know plain and simple they got money and
39:22
the people who are dying from the guns
39:25
don't that's simple that simple
39:28
Biometrics sound like a great idea um
39:31
for those guns that are above board uh I
39:34
hope somebody's listening to that Eric
39:35
we appreciate your call man thank you
39:37
every time you're a super citizen s the
39:39
morning uh we got officer on the line
39:41
who's a gun owner how you doing
39:44
sir hi this is Dwayne Dwayne where you
39:46
calling from D I'm calling from San
39:49
Antonio how are you guys nice to talk to
39:52
you I'm a first time caller by we got a
39:54
first time caller come on man goodie
39:58
come on man guys off the see Erica you
40:01
got you got him going in the call this
40:03
morning this his first time calling go
40:05
ahead what's your what's your comment D
40:07
so I'm a retired federal police officer
40:10
um I I grew up in Baltimore Maryland so
40:14
um we there were guns all over the place
40:16
all the time but I never had a gun in
40:20
the house I grew up with my grandmother
40:22
she blew her gasket when she found a BB
40:25
gun in the house so never had any type
40:28
of guns when I was growing up um but I
40:31
became I went in the military became an
40:32
officer I agree on the gun storage I
40:35
think it's an awesome idea to have the
40:38
Biometrics people should be held
40:41
accountable and I carry every single day
40:44
everywhere I go because my thing is I'd
40:48
rather have a gun and not need it than
40:51
need a gun and not have it and just one
40:54
more thing I went to a gun show recently
40:56
with a friend of to uh purchase a a gun
41:01
and guess who was there you you want us
41:03
to get not us not not us will you say
41:07
not us you got to be specific black
41:09
folks or not black folks I think out of
41:13
probably 200 people or more that was at
41:15
this gun show maybe five of us were of
41:20
color
41:22
and that how I just another question is
41:25
how many how many
41:27
Black Mass Shooters have there
41:30
been how many of the mass shootings have
41:33
been done um with by of color correct
41:37
maybe we could Google that and look that
41:39
up and come up with some so I know one
41:41
of them was John Allen muhammd right he
41:43
was the DC shooter from DC I don't think
41:46
there's been many uhhuh um that that's
41:50
that's something we should think about
41:51
also because some of these kids that are
41:54
coming out of these households where
41:56
these people these
41:57
these some of these people are entitled
41:59
and they feel like their children are
42:01
entitled are ending up the ones who
42:03
don't want to don't want to secure their
42:05
weapons you know think that it's okay to
42:09
to have a a 12 and 13 year old you know
42:13
out shooting and learning the basics of
42:15
shooting I understand safety but then
42:18
there's another thing saying okay we're
42:20
going to teach you how to use this AR
42:23
and we're not going to teach you that
42:25
you have a basic responsibility of being
42:27
a
42:28
gun what do your comment to that Erica
42:31
you so when we talk about mass shootings
42:34
he's he's talking about a specific mass
42:36
shooting because if you were really to
42:38
look at mass shootings that happen every
42:40
day in our communities there's a lot of
42:42
black kids who are at the of those guns
42:45
right and so there's levels to this and
42:48
there's levels to what he's saying in
42:50
terms of how we got to approach it but
42:53
when we talk about the the the psyche
42:55
and the trauma of folks and a lot of
42:57
people don't want to go to mental health
42:59
but ain't nobody picking up a gun that's
43:01
sane and just shooting a bunch of people
43:03
right on no no kind of way right and so
43:06
we have to help people heal we got a
43:09
there's more guns that person about
43:11
Biometrics there's enough guns for
43:12
everybody in the United States yeah
43:15
right there's there's enough guns out
43:17
here and during covid there was Guns
43:20
just ending up in communities right
43:22
there was fireworks that just ended up
43:24
in communities there was a lot of things
43:26
gun sell was at it's highest during Co
43:29
where did those guns go right and so
43:32
there's a lot of guns in our streets and
43:35
so we can't take everybody's gun away
43:38
but we have to do something in our
43:40
communities to change the mindset to
43:43
want to use that gun to resolve your
43:46
personal trauma Erica four we got Benny
43:50
Seagull here too beans I'll be remissed
43:54
if um first of all I want to thank you
43:56
because the other part of gun violence
43:59
that people don't talk about is when you
44:00
the victim of gun violence and you was
44:03
shot multiple times and it impacted your
44:06
body um tremendously and I can only
44:08
imagine how it it impacted your psyche
44:11
can you speak to that like the kind of
44:13
physical impact being shot had and even
44:16
the
44:17
mental I mean just the top physical part
44:20
about it is is just death yeah not being
44:23
here then you got to uh if you do
44:26
survive
44:27
that
44:29
is how you survive it that that works on
44:33
like Erica said just Psy too
44:36
like just not being able to do the same
44:39
things you used to do like when me
44:41
breathing different talking different
44:44
some people walking different some
44:46
people might go to get things
44:48
amputated and and just those things not
44:52
being you know your normal self that's
44:54
why for me is
44:57
I had to do this yeah I couldn't just
45:00
you know like I said I just hit 50 like
45:02
what I'mma do for the next 50 continue
45:04
to be Bean see with a rapper got to do
45:07
something and even with f my music I
45:10
always gave both sides of it I never
45:14
just glorify you know one side do
45:17
this you know what I mean and I gave you
45:20
this this the
45:22
outcome so which one you
45:25
want and I believe like for people that
45:27
listen to my music and you know might
45:31
have just clung on one side of the
45:33
message now I get a chance to sit back
45:35
and really explain things to him like
45:38
you don't want to be on this other side
45:41
you don't want that for real and like
45:44
Erica said man
45:47
this we lack a lot of information and we
45:51
got to change what's like like she said
45:54
the the the psyche the mindset of what
45:56
we think what's cool and what's not
45:59
cool we got to stop looking at people
46:02
who we think is
46:06
people of
46:08
power everybody that's not in power has
46:12
power if that makes
46:19
sense Ben SE yeah man um I got I got one
46:23
question too um to ask Erica and and
46:28
beanie because you know me personally I
46:30
just ironically too and tragically I I
46:33
just lost somebody close to me um
46:36
through gun violence 21 year old young
46:39
lady like a few days ago I got to go to
46:41
a funeral next week literally um with
46:44
with life camp and everything that you
46:46
do are there initiatives that you know
46:49
just help the the families the the
46:52
victims of these because you know I'm
46:54
seeing firsthand like how the the gun
46:57
violence not just it destroys both sides
47:01
right because the shooter you know is
47:04
going to now and then the person who got
47:07
shot is also gone so it's like family
47:11
shotted with this we work very closely
47:14
with families who from both sides of the
47:16
gun um we have a partnership with
47:19
Carolyn Dixon who was she worked at life
47:22
Camp after her son was killed over a
47:24
parking spot and she started an
47:27
organization called Where Do We Go From
47:30
Here and so that is a question that a
47:33
lot of people parents ask at that point
47:36
that pivotal Point sometimes it's just
47:38
taking them away sometimes it's just
47:40
standing there being there to listen to
47:42
them sometimes it's helping them through
47:44
the funeral process and it's a long
47:47
journey it's a long journey because that
47:50
pain never goes away from those parents
47:52
from those brothers and sisters even the
47:55
friends right like
47:57
people ask why I'm I'm angry a lot I
48:00
mean it started my father died in the
48:02
Vietnam War and then I saw so many
48:04
people get killed and that and I saw the
48:07
city doing nothing nothing like they
48:11
they literally said to be if you didn't
48:14
force us to do this we wouldn't help
48:17
these people we wouldn't work with these
48:19
families cuz they don't vote they don't
48:22
fund our campaigns there's no reason for
48:25
us to support these people people and so
48:28
we started by just helping parents
48:30
snatching kids up doing teen parties
48:33
giving them something else to do doing
48:35
we we partnered with some ladies in the
48:37
Hamptons we would take the families out
48:40
to The Hamptons Russell Simmons would do
48:42
a forgiveness dinner every year for
48:45
mothers on both sides of the gun trying
48:48
to give them a sense of hope sense of
48:50
purpose you know because a lot of them
48:52
don't want to live after their kids die
48:55
that's right you know so so we become
48:57
that oxygen
48:59
mask beans what was it I've spoken with
49:04
people we had an interview with a young
49:06
man named JC recently he owns dror smoke
49:09
which is a cannabis company and somebody
49:12
went to Rob him shot him point blank
49:15
with a Glock right he died they had to
49:18
resuscitate him um a few times a few
49:21
times just had this conversation
49:23
Thursday I think and
49:25
wow and I asked him did he forgive the
49:29
shooter because he saw the shooter in
49:31
court and forget and then he said I saw
49:34
him in court and I forgave him and the
49:36
shooter cried and thanked him and he
49:39
said it was important for him you know
49:41
to forgive the person that shot him how
49:43
do you feel about that and and the
49:45
person that shot you are you able to
49:47
forgive that is that important you have
49:51
to when you when you when you understand
49:55
you have to MH how can you not forgive
49:59
if you want forgiveness M cuz it's going
50:01
to be a time where everybody going to
50:03
need
50:04
forgiveness when you cross all the way
50:07
over when you ain't here no more you
50:10
going to need forgiveness
50:13
from who can't nobody forgive you yeah
50:16
you going to need that so you have
50:18
to when you forgive does it free you in
50:22
a
50:22
sense you know does it uh give you bring
50:26
some kind of te to the scen the
50:28
situation I mean if you if you if you
50:31
honest in that forgiveness yeah M yeah
50:35
it it I'm not going to say that that
50:37
feeling never go away but it just make
50:39
you more conscious of certain decisions
50:43
it for me what it did was it lift the
50:46
burden off of
50:48
me from knowing things that I've done in
50:52
my
50:54
life so I lift a little bit of that that
50:56
offer me m and that's why I think a lot
50:59
of you know people out there with pent
51:01
up aggression like Erica said we just
51:04
need a
51:05
whole reset we need a
51:09
reprograming because we it's a
51:13
programming you know as a programming to
51:15
think like that's the result we look at
51:17
it every day through movies through
51:21
videos we hear it every day through
51:24
music and there only
51:27
those things is you know is they get
51:29
swept under the rug but it's real like
51:31
you got to be responsible for things and
51:34
people say it every day they say uh
51:37
within the last year 10 years it been
51:40
this this thing of where people
51:43
so-called conscious people say you know
51:45
you could talk certain things you can
51:47
manifest certain things so you got to be
51:49
careful energy you got to be careful
51:53
yeah so forgiveness is definitely a part
51:55
of and I think that's step in the
51:57
reprograming the Forgiveness got to be
52:00
the
52:01
empathy um I saw a clip um a while back
52:06
I don't even know when this was when uh
52:08
people start having a conversation about
52:10
Ai and and you were one of the folks
52:12
that say hey man I I would love to use
52:14
that tool yeah you know and I I I you
52:17
know my Spidey senses tell me you've
52:19
been in the studio beans I could tell
52:21
when you in the studio I wake up at
52:23
night like he just did a verse just did
52:26
a verse Y how has that been going have
52:28
you been able to utilize AI for any
52:30
music and how has it been going we still
52:33
getting it right okay we still getting
52:35
the right but it's it's coming it's
52:36
coming yeah what does it CU you got
52:38
different see with me you got
52:40
different different beings like
52:42
different you know some records I I uh
52:47
you know my tone is you know smooth or
52:49
whatever some you get the aggressiveness
52:52
so it's we just we we we feeding the AI
52:56
mhm so it get to learn me so when I want
52:58
to push a button and say all right I
53:00
want to sound like beanie SE today or I
53:04
want to sound like mac today I might
53:06
want to sound like the Bry Bo on this
53:08
one that's faor do
53:11
that yeah so yeah it's it's dope is it
53:15
fascinating to hear what it plays back
53:17
though yeah I know that's a trip scary
53:20
too do you listen to AI beans and go wow
53:22
he
53:25
dope
53:27
yeah yeah well it it to me is is this
53:31
like I think that's the that's the best
53:34
thing you know that came out like for
53:36
the fans like like I get
53:39
to relive my youthful self yeah through
53:44
the music like far as hearing it cuz the
53:48
Pen's still there the pen still nice you
53:49
don't lose the pin that's like a boxer
53:51
never loses his his punch because it's
53:54
even some rappers with nothing happen to
53:56
them physically and just you know
53:58
throughout time their voice their voice
54:00
changes you know like some of these guys
54:02
came out when they was 20 years old and
54:05
now you know they're 50 years old and
54:07
and and the voice evolves so it's
54:09
definitely interesting you know
54:11
sometimes I do get on the computer and I
54:13
just tap in and just hear what the AI
54:16
because at first I was very anti- AI I
54:18
was you know thinking about the
54:20
Terminator and all of this stuff I was
54:22
very anti- AI but now you can be the
54:26
Terminator yeah yeah yeah it's great
54:29
strides man this is an amazing
54:31
conversation I I I I didn't know what to
54:34
anticipate but Erica I've been familiar
54:36
with your work for years so I want to
54:37
say salute to you and then in your next
54:40

54:42

54:45
