At one school, only three children were observed participating in academic activities. While some schools have reopened amid renovation work expected to be completed in the coming months, others are attempting to recover through reconstruction efforts. Schools with severe structural damage that is beyond repair face total demolition as the only viable option. The magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 earthquakes struck Venezuela on June 24, causing widespread destruction and prompting national emergency measures. The UN Development Program (UNDP) said on June 26 that the earthquakes caused an estimated $6.7 billion in direct physical damage.
