The twin quakes, both above magnitude 7, struck the central coastal region within a minute on June 24, prompting Rodriguez to declare seven days of national mourning beginning Wednesday evening. At a Thursday evening press conference in Caracas, Rodriguez said search and rescue teams are still combing through the rubble and have already pulled 6,462 people to safety. She thanked countries that have rushed supplies and rescue teams to Venezuela, calling on the international community to keep its support flowing. Rodriguez added that Venezuela will work with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to set up a 200 million-U.S. dollar reconstruction fund for post disaster rebuilding.
