Jun 18, 2026
Effingham, United States - June 17, 2026 A large, dark wedge-shaped tornado dropped from a powerful storm cloud and moved across open fields outside Effingham during the evening of June 17, 2026. The intense funnel was clearly visible against a lighter sky, with swirling condensation and debris marking its movement across the rural landscape. Scattered homes, trees, streetlights, and a water tower stood near the storm’s path. Above, heavy storm clouds dominated the sky as the tornado maintained a wide and violent structure while advancing across farmland. The footage, filmed by X user Michael Connolly Thomas, showed one of several tornadoes that struck central Illinois during a significant severe weather outbreak on June 17. The tornado near Effingham traveled an estimated 12 to 15 miles, leaving widespread destruction in its wake. Damage was reported to homes, structures, power lines, and roadways across parts of Effingham County. Emergency crews responded to collapsed buildings, gas leaks, and blocked roads. Injuries were reported, though no immediate fatalities were confirmed in the area. The event was part of a larger outbreak that produced multiple tornadoes and strong winds across the region that night.
