Effingham, United States - June 17, 2026 A large, dark wedge-shaped tornado moved across open ground just north of Effingham around 8 p.m. on June 17, 2026. The powerful funnel rotated beneath a massive storm cloud, with swirling condensation and debris visible as it advanced through rural and developed areas. The tornado was seen from a roadside position near a junction close to IL33 and just west of the I57/I70 corridor. Parked vehicles, a red industrial building, a house displaying an American flag, power lines, and streetlights were visible in the foreground, while the tornado dominated the background under a dark, turbulent sky. The footage, filmed by X users Michael Connolly Thomas and WindyCity Weather and News, showed the tornado passing north of Effingham during a broader severe weather outbreak across central Illinois on June 17. The tornado carved through parts of Effingham County, damaging homes, structures, infrastructure, and power lines. Emergency crews responded to collapsed buildings, downed lines, and blocked roads. Injuries were reported in the wider area, though no immediate fatalities were confirmed from this specific tornado. The event was one of several tornadoes produced during the larger outbreak that brought strong winds across the region that night.
