Los Catalanes, Spain - May 15, 2026 Stunning footage shared by Catalan weather account @MeteoElpito captures an unexpected return to winter conditions in the Catalan Pyrenees after fresh snowfall blanketed the mountains around Vallter 2000 in northeastern Spain. The video, filmed in the Pastuira area, pans across snow-covered slopes and trees that had appeared green and spring-like just a day earlier, highlighting the dramatic overnight transformation. The snowfall arrived during an unusual cold spell in mid-May 2026, with temperatures dropping sharply across higher elevations in the region. Local forecasts had warned that several centimeters of snow could accumulate in mountainous areas as colder air pushed across the Pyrenees. Vallter 2000, a ski resort located near the French border at high altitude in the Girona province, is known for late-season snow, but the sudden return of winter weather this deep into spring surprised many residents and weather watchers. The footage quickly gained attention online, with Spanish television program “Y Ahora Sonsoles” and the European Broadcasting Union both receiving permission from the filmer to air the dramatic scenes. Meteorologists said the cold front also brought rain, gusty winds, and unseasonably low temperatures to other parts of Catalonia, while snow levels dropped significantly in the mountains.
